Surely now it’s Spring...?
Last month I asked the question ―It really is Spring...isn‘t it? A month has passed since I wrote that and I‘ve seen precious little, if any evidence of Spring! We had one warm...ish day when I even got my legs out to the horror of my partner in crime, but she needn‘t have worried, the next day was so cold I covered up again...so much for global warming...are they sure the planet is warming up or is it just another excuse for squeezing money from us all? Last years road building, street light replacement, roundabout building, speed bump installations and general mayhem through the prime tourist season left visitors to Javea vowing they would never come come back. I therefore wondered if the masters at the Ayuntamiento could possibly do worse this year. It would appear the anti-tourism stance continues unabated as I have been reliably informed that the front line restaurants and businesses of the Javea Arenal are
now to receive warnings to reinstate the covered frontages to paved areas and that there are massive fines to be imposed. Maybe a spokesman would like to inform the businesses of the Arenal, the Port and the Old Town, how this benefits the town and all its inhabitants whether they be indigenous Spanish, or Ex-pats and how this will lure much needed tourist Euros to the area. Indeed, what marketing is being done to persuade Tourists this is still the jewel of Spain? We have some great articles to spark some debates this month and we have some features asking awkward questions. Is there any benefit to road bumps, for instance? Some say yes, some say no, we present the bumpy facts... wasn‘t that smooth? We are also delighted to welcome Bruno the dog listener as one of our regular writers. Bruno‘s mission in life is to help us all understand dogs by communicating with them in their language. His articles will educate and astound you... Finally, our reader numbers are holding up yet again despite a falling Ex-pat population. We must be doing something right, which as my dearly beloved will tell you, is about time! Please read, enjoy and don‘t forget to pass on to all your email contacts...

Nutmeg...
suggests. Nutmeg is well known for its culinary uses. It is used in a variety of sweet as well as savoury dishes. However, there are some different properties of nutmeg that many are not aware of. It is the psycho-activity and toxicity that I'm talking about. In simpler words, I'm referring to the nutmeg high effect. Let us learn something about ground nutmeg high. Nutmeg - Psychoactive Agent
Well, who would have believed it? The humble nutmeg as a class A drug? Nutmeg is a common spice found in every kitchen. But have you ever heard of people getting high of nutmeg? Yes, it‘s true! Nutmeg and its sister spice, mace, are commonly obtained from an evergreen tree, native to the Banda islands in the Moluccas of Indonesia. Nutmeg is brown in colour and roughly egg shaped, and weighs between 5 and 10 grams when it is dried. It is actually the seed of the tree and not the nut as the name
Nutmeg contains myristicin, which is a psychoactive compound belonging to the deliriant drug family. Myristicin is a potent narcotic compound that can cause hallucinations if consumed in large amounts. Nutmeg, apart from acting as a spice, can produce a high that is similar to the effect of marijuana. It may also be responsible for several other side effects. But a sprinkle of nutmeg on the eggnog is not going to cause the hallucinating effects! One must consume several grams of nutmeg in order to feel the psycho-active effects. A dose of about two tablespoons, which is between 5 and 15 grams of grated nutmeg, can get you high by inducing a narcotic reaction. The effects can range from a mild high to a full blown experience with visual as well as TMAV April 2010

It may produce serious effects in some cases while it can be completely inactive as a drug in others. There could also be some serious long term health risks associated with the use of nutmeg.
Nutmeg as a recreational drug fortunately is not very popular because of its strong taste and the undesired side effects produced on consuming it. What’s On in Javea To some degree, this is a biography on Nelson Mandela, but the film's main focus is on his idea of inspiring a country that is drawn to crime, violence, and poverty (after years of Apartheid) to a glimpse of hope via the nation's rugby team. Without a doubt, this is the perfect role for Morgan Freeman. His accent does come and go throughout the film, but performs the role superbly. He becomes the man. Morgan Freeman is one of my favourite actors because he never plays himself. Hopefully, Morgan can finally win the Oscar he deserves. Regarding Matt Damon as the rugby coach (Francois Pienaar), he too immerses himself into his role. He even maintains a solid accent. However, the sympathy of the film is aimed more towards Mandela than it is to Francois. The other cast members also give good performances. The plot is predictable, something we've seen before‌underdog overcomes impossible odds, yet screenwriter Anthony Peckham throws in many important themes that may seem all to familiar, but is nonetheless eye-opening such as: forgiveness, unity, and determination to do what is right. Racial tension between the whites and blacks is dominant in the movie, particularly between the black and white security guards, but the film's point, as well as Mandela's goal, is to put our differences aside and work together as one. This movie isn't just about a rugby game, but rather organizing a nation to a success. It may be considered a wise political move on Mandela's part, but as Morgan says to his aid, "It is a human calculation". People need inspiration in order to change and to do good. These themes are what make it a good film. It also makes it a different kind of sports movie. Clint Eastwood has made another great movie. He has captured the themes of the story, and the poverty of South Africa as well as the intense rugby sequences. There are powerful scenes in this movie, and some intense and suspenseful ones, and even ones that'll make you smile. For the first time in a movie for this year, I actually cried. Not because of sadness, but from joy. "Invictus" is an inspiring film and overall, I enjoyed this film. "Invictus" proves that it doesn't take special effects and big action sequences to make a great film. It is excellent to see one of our great old directors to recognize this, and display it so wonderfully.

Recipe of the Month Pork Stir Fry with Cashews, Lime and Mint
3.
Let me start off by telling you all that I‘m on a promise this month...no, not that one! ‗She who must be obeyed‘ has given her word she will cook this little delight for me next week when we have visitors. Why we have to have visitors before I get to taste this, is beyond me but then do any of us chaps know what goes on in their pretty little heads?
Ingredients - Serves 2 - just!
500g pork tenderloin 6 tablespoons peanut oil 75g cashew nuts or peanuts 4 spring onions, finely chopped 4 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped 1 inch piece of ginger, peeled and finely grated 3 small, hot red chillies, finely chopped zest and juice of 3 big, juicy limes 2 tablespoons nam pla (Thai fish sauce) a handful of mint leaves chopped a handful of basil leaves, torn to shreds
Method 1.
2.
Slice the pork tenderloin into pieces about as thick as your little finger and then cut them again into short strips. Get a wok or large sauté pan really hot over a high flame and pour 3 tablespoons of the oil into

it. Once the oil is really hot — you will probably hear it crackle — add the pork and cook for three or four minutes, until it is golden brown in patches. Stir it from time to time otherwise it will not brown properly.
4.
Meanwhile, chop the nuts quite finely. 5. When the meat is browned and sizzling, remove it to a warm plate with any cooking juices, return the wok to the heat and, when it is really hot and smoking, add the remaining oil. 6. As soon as it is hot, add the spring onions, garlic, ginger and chillies and fry, stirring almost constantly for a minute or two. 7. Add in the nuts and stir-fry for a minute or two, then return the meat and any juices to the pan. 8. Stir in the lime zest and juice and the fish sauce and fry for two minutes, then stir in the herbs. Serve immediately and enjoy! “Vegetables are a must on a diet. ...and for the veggies Easter Hot Cross Muffins We thought we should include a festive recipe for Easter. We hope you enjoy it.
Ingredients - Makes 12
75 g raisins or sultanas 2 tablespoons orange juice 225 g flour 150 g granulated or brown sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon allspice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves (optional) 75 g candied peel 75 g chopped dried apricot 1 egg 250 ml low-fat milk 2 dashes hot sauce (such as Tabasco) 75 ml vegetable oil 2 tablespoons butter, melted 1 teaspoon vanilla
For the Glaze...
150 g sifted icing sugar 4 teaspoons orange juice
Method
Preheat oven to 350°F. Place raisins or sultanas in a small bowl. Pour juice over them. Microwave, covered, until hot, 1 minute. Set aside. Place paper muffin cases in a 12-cup muffin tin. In a large bowl, using a fork, stir flour with sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, allspice, salt and magazine / 23
cloves. Stir in raisin/sultana mixture, candied peel and apricots. In a medium-size bowl, whisk egg. Whisk in milk, oil, butter and vanilla. Pour over flour mixture. Stir just until mixed. Batter will be lumpy. Divide between muffin cases. Bake in centre of preheated oven until a cake tester inserted into centre of muffins comes out clean, approx 20 to 25 minutes. Remove pan to a cooling rack. After 5 minutes, remove muffins from pan and cool completely on rack. Store muffins in an airtight container at room temperature up to 3 days or freeze up to 2 months. Glaze: Stir sifted icing sugar with orange juice until smooth. Drizzle over cooled muffins in a criss-cross pattern to mimic hot cross buns.
Cook’s notes:
To make your own ‗handmade‘ muffin cases, as in the photo above, cut circles of greaseproof paper slightly larger than the muffin gaps in the tray and push them down. The mixture will fill out as the muffins cook. “Do vegetarians eat animal crackers?” Author Unknown

The origins of Easter I was looking through all my usual areas of research to try and discover the real origins of Easter because... ...I suddenly realised I just didn‘t know. It‘s not just about yummy chocolate eggs and bunnies you know, even though I find it a good excuse to eat more chocolate than I care to confess to! I roughly knew of course the Christian religious aspects of it all, and that Easter is the principal festival of the Church year. What I didn‘t know was that it is also a convergence of three main traditions – Pagan, Hebrew and Christian. According to jolly old St Bede who was an English Historian of much note in the 8th century, Easter originated from the old Teutonic mythology and was derived from the name Eostre, the Anglo Saxon goddess of Spring. The name Easter was used by early Christians so it would match this old
name fairly closely and therefore be accepted more readily by the population. Some say though that Easter is related to the Jewish Passover which commemorates Israel‘s deliverance from about 300 years of bondage in Egypt. It was during this Passover that Christ in 30 AD, was crucified under the orders of Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor, following accusations of blasphemy. The resurrection came three days later on Easter Sunday. The feast of Easter was well established by the second century but there was a dispute between the eastern and western churches over the exact date. The east wanted it on a weekday but the west wanted Easter to fall on the Sunday regardless of the date. Emperor Constantine called the council of Nicaea in 325 to resolve this dispute and decided that Easter should fall on the first Sunday following the first full moon of the

And here is the most disturbing fact...... Margarine is but one molecule from being PLASTIC..... This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added changing the molecular structure of the food.) You can try this for yourself purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area, within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things; no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it, (that should tell you something) it does not rot, smell any different... Because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it, even those teeny-weeny microorganisms will not find a home to grow... Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would We have probably all read this scare story circulating by email entitled ―The difference between butter and margarine?‖ “If toast always lands butter-side down, and cats always land on their feet, what happens if you strap toast on the back of a cat and drop it?” Stephen Wright TMAV April 2010

...Yuk! This began ‗doing the rounds‘ on the Internet in June 2003, often under the title "Butter vs Margarine," and surprisingly enough there was a fair bit of truth to it, at least at the time. According to the findings in the medical world in 2003, margarine could increase the risk of heart disease, depending upon the type of fat contained in the spread. Previously, the dietary villain in the development of coronary disease was presumed to be saturated fat, but new evidence points the finger at trans fat (also known as trans fatty acids). Although butter has its own set of dietary shortcomings, it does not contain trans fat. In 1994, Harvard University researchers reported that people who ate partially hydrogenated oils, which are high in trans fats, had nearly twice the risk of heart attacks as those who consumed much less of the substance. Several large studies in the United States and elsewhere, including the Nurses' Health Study conducted by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health, have also suggested a strong link between earlier death and consumption of foods high in trans magazine / 33
fats. Trans fats occur naturally in small amounts in some foods, including meat and dairy products, but most trans fats in the Western diet are formed when vegetable oils are chemically changed to give them a longer shelf life. Biscuits, potato crisps, baked products, and the like are particularly loaded with trans fats. The Food and Drug Administration, the National Academy, the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute, and the American Heart Association all recommend consumers limit their intake of trans fat wherever possible. Moreover, the federal government passed regulations requiring that by 2006 all food labels disclose how much trans fat a product contains. Because butter is an animal product, it contains cholesterol, amounting to 30 mg per tablespoon or 10% of the USDA recommended daily “Would you rather have butter or guns? Preparedness makes us powerful. Butter merely makes us fat.” Hermann Goering
...Yuk! allowance. Margarines, because they are non-animal products, do not. Since the issuance of warnings and regulations about trans fats in the last few years, many margarine producers have reformulated their products. I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, for example, now bears a notice on its label proclaiming "NO TRANS FAT," and the amount of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat per serving has dropped from 4.5g each to 4g (polyunsaturated) and 2g (monounsaturated) per serving. Although a great deal of the information given in the e-mail is valid, one bit of intelligence is nothing more than hyperbole tossed in by the author in an effort to make his point more strongly. The claim that some comestible is but a "single molecule away" from being a decidedly inedible (or even toxic) substance is at the least, misleading and could possibly lead to incorrect food intake and be dangerous to health. Our advice is to make sure you read the label, and even more than that, make sure you make an informed choice based on actual facts. The message is clear, do NOT believe all you read on the internet. There is little regulation and anyone can write anything they like about any subject. It is both the greatest strength of the internet and, bizarrely, its greatest failing.
It’s your choice...make it wisely!

Flat Pack - The Inside Story Some of us have experienced the vagaries of flat packs...remember the old days of MFI and the missing bits? Well, flat pack furniture has come a long way since those pioneering days. Here is a heartwarming story told by Rosanne and Bob of the birth of their business three years ago which, here in Javea, has gone on to thrive through their dogged determination. This despite one of the worst recessions ever known to man. ―In 2007 we watched my sister Kate make a shopping trip to IKEA in Murcia. She spent time preparing her list to furnish her apartment from scratch and then on the chosen day, set off from Javea at 08.00, leaving us with her children for the day! By 8pm we wondered where she was, and so rang to find that she was doing well but hadn‘t finished yet. She eventually arrived back in Javea just after midnight.
Over the next couple of days we helped her unpack her new pieces of furniture, linen and towels etc – it was all lovely but by the time it was unpacked, built, placed and the packaging disposed of we were exhausted and another day and a half had gone by! She was thrilled – her apartment was transformed – BUT - she wondered if she would have set out on this venture had she known just how exhausting and time consuming it would be. I can‘t remember actually who it was who uttered the first words, but this gave us the idea ‖What if we personally shopped at IKEA for people? Then delivered their IKEA furniture and assembled it? We started asking people what they thought of the idea and the response was unanimous – ―If we could pay someone else to shop at “I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose” Arthur Conan Doyle TMAV April 2010

Restaurant Review This month we decided on the Azorin... Opposite the QuickSave Supermarket in Javea Port, I personally have been going to the Azorin for many years. This will I suppose, give you a foretaste of the type of review I would give this Spanish family run restaurant. If you are looking for a value for money night out, with no frills, but where you will get great fish and chips (my choice!) this is the place to go to. Location: No sea or mountain views and no seating outside. Ambience: It‘s a little bit like a canteen, lighting is far too bright and it‘s very noisy. I particularly don‘t like the television being on as some soft background music would create a better scene. Staff: They are always really friendly and very efficient. I have never waited long to be served. The owner has a fun sense of humour. Starter: We ordered from the menu del dia. Starters choice was asparagus with mayonnaise which I had. Its the white tinned variety but I like it. There were two soups and a salad on offer as well, all good sized portions. Main Course: We all had the battered fish, which is absolutely superb, with two large pieces, so enough for the dog as well! Other choices are pork and chicken, all with magazine / 41

chips, and these are excellent as well. Pudding: The usual flan, which is home made and good, but I had an orange straight from the tree so I was told. Drinks: Included in the price is a very passable 13% plonk. It would not pass muster with a wine buff, but as a table wine it was jolly nice. Price: 9€ a head which we all thought was excellent value for money. Would we go again...? a resounding yes. Overall star rating for a cheapie night out... Could it be improved? Yes again. Dim the lights, some music and a few nice pictures and decorations would transform the place. There‘s no need to change the food or menu...They have perfected that over many years of trading. LR. Solution to "The Flawed Game " After one team loses all its members, the team that it eliminates members from will always win. For example, say the Scissors team is the first team to lose all its members. It is now impossible for the Paper team to lose any members, but the Paper team can still eliminate members from Rock team, so it will eventually win (if the Rock team answers questions, there would be no one left for them to eliminate so nothing would happen). This means that the best strategy is actually to avoid answering questions until one team is eliminated. If all the players know this, the game would never end. magazine / 45

The treasurer's plan was to drink a weak poison prior to the meeting with the king, and then he would drink the pharmacist's strong poison, which would neutralize the weak poison. As his own poison he would bring water, which will have no effect on him, but the pharmacist who would drink the water, and then his poison would surely die. When the pharmacist figured out this plan, he decided to bring water as well. So the treasurer who drank poison earlier, drank the pharmacist's water, then his own water, and died of the poison he drank before. The pharmacist would drink only water, so nothing will happen to him. And because both of them brought the king water, he didn't get a strong poison like he wanted. In a land far away, a kingdom was famed for its wine. In one month, the king was scheduled to throw a huge banquet in honor of his birthday. Unfortunately, the king had many enemies. One day, about a month prior to the banquet, he went down to the wine cellar and found a spy poisoning one of the wine bottles. Unfortunately, the king did not notice which of the bottles was poisoned. The spy was interrogated and questioned, but refused to answer. He said that since they didn't know which bottle was poisoned, they were all rendered useless. Since they couldn't get anything out of him, they killed the spy for his treachery. Before he died, however, the spy did tell them a few things about this particular poison: 1.) The poison is so strong that any amount of dilution will have no effect on it, so if they tried to dilute the wines, it would still be poisonous. 2.) The poison would take 1 month to work. Only if after 1 month someone dies, then you know he was poisoned. This made the king very upset. Three brave men came forward and said they would sacrifice their lives to honour the king. In short: You have 8 wine bottles, 1 month, and 3 expendable men. Since you have 1 month, you only have one shot at this. At the end of the month, you have to know EXACTLY (without guessing) which wine bottle is poisoned and what other 7 are good. Obviously this will require arranging the 3 men to drink the bottles in a certain fashion.

Road Humps For & Against? I have to admit to ranting about these *.{ /!* things in the road as it seems to me they do nothing other than ruin my suspension… ...so, in an effort to see both sides of the argument, I decided to write an article on road humps/bumps or sleeping policemen as us English speakers like to call them… The arguments for to start with: For: Road humps in a 20mph zone reduce accidents by 42% and reduce serious injuries or death by 53% Against: Accidents saved on minor roads are more than offset by increases in accidents on the dangerous, busy, border roads. Figures show hump schemes increase traffic on border roads by 12%. Although that may not seem much compared to the 42-53% headline safety improvement on minor roads, a border road may be 30 times busier and more dangerous than a minor road. For example, if a non-humped minor road had a fatality every 100 years and a humped road every 200 years, a border road every 3.3 years. A 12% increase in accidents on the border road will result in 7.2 extra fatalities every 200 years compared to a saving of one fatality every 200 years by the humps. This assumes a linear
danger relationship with traffic volume (the relationship is not linear, and costs/benefits will vary from scheme to scheme based on complex factors, but illustrates the point). For: Road humps reduce traffic in

Furthermore, road humps increase the level of traffic by on average 12% on boundary roads. If most traffic on the humped roads is local within a housing estate, the reduction on traffic volume will be negligible.
Road closures will also transfer traffic and associated accidents to border roads.

...no more humps! Against: Road humps increase the levels of pollution. Vehicles accelerate then brake when coming up to a hump. As vehicles accelerate, the fuel mixture in the engine is enriched. The enriched mixture increases the level of allergyinducing hydrocarbons and carbon particulates in the exhaust. As a vehicle brakes, it generates brake dust. For: A DETR leaflet 9/99 indicates that putting humps 60m apart, instead of 100m apart, helps counter the polluting effects of humps by discouraging accelerate/brake driving Against: As vehicles go over road humps, much of the forward momentum is converted into heat in the suspension system and vibration in the ground. Regardless of how a hump is designed, more fuel consumption and therefore more pollution will result from vehicles travelling over road humps. For: Some of the extra emission will be offset by a lower volume of traffic within the humped area. Specific damage when backed up by substantial evidence has been compensated for by councils. No studues have shown small cars are particularly vulnerable. Water Wise Go off the boil! Only boil as much water as you need to, to avoid unnecessarily heating water you won't even use! Don’t be a drip! Kitchen hints Your washing machine and tumble dryer are two of the appliances in your home that use the most energy. You may not be able to cut down how often you use them, but you can make some small changes to how you use them that will help you save energy and money.
Other tips for conserving energy when washing are: Only use the machine when you have a full load, and if you have to do a smaller wash, use the half load function. The spin on the machine may mean that more energy is used but by spinning your clothes you are removing more
excess water, therefore reducing your drying time in a tumble dryer.
When using the washing machine, between 85-90% of energy is used just to heat up the water. Therefore, dropping the water temperature of your wash could significantly decrease your energy consumption. Over a year, by using a warm wash rather than a hot wash, you could cut consumption nearly in half. magazine / 67
The location of your fridge can make a difference in how energy efficient it is. Make sure it is out of direct sunlight and not close to the oven. Make sure you defrost your fridge and freezer on a regular basis or whenever necessary. An iced up freezer will make the freezer work harder, therefore wasting more energy than needed. Only set your fridge to as cold as you need it and avoid keeping the door open for long
periods of time as the more cold air that escapes, the harder the fridge has to work. You should check the seal regularly as well, as if it is damaged then cold air will be escaping also. You should never put warm or hot food into the fridge as this will make the fridge work extra hard to try and keep it cold; always allow food to cool down first. Another good tip is to defrost frozen food in the fridge as this helps to keep it cool as it thaws.

Auntie Elsie’s Page… Send in your problems and I’ll answer them in my own inimitable style... email: elsie@vidapublications.com Dear Auntie Elsie, I've never written to you before, but I really need your advice. I have suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs are phone rings, but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with 'the girls' a lot recently from the Irish Bar, although when I ask their names she always says, 'Just some friends from work, you don't know them.' I always try to stay awake to look out for her coming home, but I usually fall asleep. Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn't want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her. Around midnight, I decided to hide in the garage behind my golf clubs so I could get a good view of the whole street when she arrived home from a night out with 'the girls'. When she got out of the car she was buttoning up her blouse, which was open, and she took her panties out of her purse and slipped them on. It was at that moment, crouching behind my clubs, that I noticed that the graphite shaft on my Ping G 10 Driver appeared to have a hairline crack right by the club head. Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the pro shop where I bought it? Yours concerned. M Holland -Smythe I’m extremely concerned about
your situation. So much so, I have consulted elsewhere before answering you as this can be a very delicate subject.. My considered opinion is that you should take your club to be mended immediately as your swing could be affected. AE Dear Auntie Elsie, Two years ago, my parents died in a car accident. A week before that happened, my girlfriend of three years told me she had been having an affair, and she left me to live with her new man. I then lived with my sister who is married and has two children, but last month we had a huge row and she told me that I was nothing but a nuisance and she wanted me out. I am 29, unemployed, and now I‘m living in a pokey little bedsit, with nothing to do. I don‘t go out much because I can‘t afford it, and also, because all my mates have girlfriends, I feel left out and in the way if I go out with them. I feel so lonely that I cry myself to sleep every night. I‘ve felt like ending it all, but that seems cowardly. What can I do? John Deere-Driver Well, I think the first thing you have to do is stop being a coward. Once you have mastered that, all your troubles will simply disappear AE Dear Auntie Elsie, Recently, I received a chain letter in TMAV April 2010

Arthur Daly - London That’s really brilliant of you. Thanks for nothing pal! Now, I shall die a horrible death except I’ve sent it back to you. AE Dear Auntie Elsie, I have two brothers, one works at Microsoft, the other was sentenced to death in the gas chamber. My mother died of insanity when I was three years old, my two sisters are prostitutes and my father sells drugs. Recently, I met a girl who was released from a reformatory where she served time for smothering her illegitimate child to death. I love this girl very much and want to marry her. My problem is this:
Dear Auntie Elsie, I am despondent at the state of the world, I beseeched God for answers but got nothing. Since I kept hearing how "God is in the White House" nowadays, I made a pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. The trip began well, on a Peter Pan Express bus playing a bleeped-out TV movie version of Al Pacino in Scarface (you know, I've always thought Michelle what's-her-name is extremely attractive, even when she plays a sweaty "coke head"), then ended badly when Lucifer's last line of defence, the so-called "secret service," attacked me with stun guns on the sidewalk in front of the White House. But the joke is on them, because ever since then "the answers" just pop into my head. Ali, Javea I’m glad the joke is on them as for a moment there I thought it was on me! My leaflet entitled ‘God is in the White House’ might help you....poor thing... AE
Shall I tell her about my brother who works at Microsoft? Sincerely, Rob, Orba You should see it from her point of view. She has just met a nice man from a nice family. after a difficult start to life Don’t disappoint her with this unnecessary appalling news AE magazine / 73

Bruno has agreed to let us see a little of his world and how he developed this amazing empathy with our canine friends... On September 22nd of 1943 I decided to become the son of my parents in the city of Antwerpen in Belgium. Suddenly I was a Flemish boy with the French surname Goffin.
As a child I sometimes felt like a second class citizen in my home town. Why was that? The reason was that the "elite" in town spoke French and I only spoke the local dialect. I asked myself: How do I communicate with the "elite" if I do not speak their language? Having graduated from the university

A man’s best friend in Gent, passionate love brought the solution for my French language problem. I got involved with a beautiful and wealthy French speaking lady called Babette. All of a sudden learning French was very easy for me because it was simply pillow talk. I was very happy because I could easily communicate in the language I hated so much before I fell in love with Babette. My father was an electrician. He was very good with his hands but bad with words. As a boy I witnessed how he was sometimes ridiculed for his lack of fluency whenever he had to say something. Although I was scared shitless of speaking in public, I overcame my fear and the more I spoke the better it went. When I expanded my business to other European countries, it was exhilirating to experience how I became fluent in Dutch, French, English, German, Italian and Spanish. I loved to communicate with many people in their own language and I discovered how this opened their hearts for me. One day my wife decided to have a dog. And you know what? I was against it. What would I have to do with an animal in my house? But quickly I became enthralled with my first puppy and I was fascinated to see how dogs communicate with each other. More! Simply prick a vitamin E capsule with a sterile needle and squeeze the oil onto your cut at least three times a day. Cover it with a Band-Aid if it's a serious wound. Be sure to choose natural vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol). Research shows that it has more antioxidant power than synthetic vitamin E. Dry Eyes You'll need to shed a few tears to remedy a case of dry eyes. And the easiest way to stimulate your tearing action is to apply moist heat to your eyelids. Dip a small towel or washcloth in warm water, wring it out, lie down, close your eyes, and put the cloth over your lids for 15 minutes. Do this two or three times a day or as needed. Eye Strain To revitalize tired eyes, treat yourself to a soothing chamomile (Matricaria recutita) compress twice a day. The chamomile soaks through your eyelids, soothing eye tissue and reducing swelling in the capillaries. Make the compress by steeping 1 teaspoon dried chamomile flowers or 1 chamomile tea bag in 1 cup boiling hot water for 20 minutes. Strain. Allow the tea to cool, soak a washcloth in it, wring it out, lie down, and place it over your closed eyes for 15 to 20 minutes. Headaches magazine / 79
Dull a tension headache by massaging a few drops of peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita) into your temples. Peppermint works as well as 1,000 mg of acetaminophen, the main ingredient in aspirin, according to one German study. Herb experts don't know exactly how it works, but the peppermint appears to prevent your body from sending pain signals to your central nervous system. Heartburn You'll need to find a carpeted area for this heartburn remedy called a heel drop. This sounds strange, but it works. Roll up onto your toes as high as you can, and then allow your heels to quickly drop down onto the ground. Repeat this 20 to 30 times, holding onto the back of a chair for balance if you need to. The downward motion pulls the acid that causes heartburn back into your stomach. Insect Bites Relieve the itch from bug bites with an onion. The sulphur in onions neutralizes the chemicals

even more! that cause the itch. Simply slice a yellow onion in half and rub one of the cut sides on the bite. The itching should stop immediately. Refrigerate the onion in a sealed container to use again if the itching resumes. Make a fresh slice before reapplying it. Joint Pain Capsaicin ointment, made from fiery cayenne peppers, can make your joints feel as good as new by interrupting pain signals. Rub the ointment into your joints every few hours. You may feel a mild burning sensation in your skin when you first apply it, but any discomfort will subside in a few minutes. Be sure to keep your hands away from your eyes until you've washed them thoroughly. Nosebleeds Halt a mild nosebleed in minutes with this simple, albeit strange trick. Tear a piece of brown paper from a grocery bag, place it inside your mouth between your top lip and your gum, and leave it there until your nose stops bleeding. No one knows why it works but people have used this trick successfully for 30 years. Warts This wart remedy may sound wacky, but it works. Gently rub the wart with
your finger for 15 seconds at the same time each day. Rubbing the wart stimulates blood flow to the area and prompts your immune system to fight the wart virus. Doing this at the same time every day trains your immune system to kick in on its own. Sunburn Your afternoon snack can also soothe your sunburn. Smearing yogurt on your skin as soon as it turns pink, cools your skin and reestablishes its pH balance so it heals faster. Use plain, full-fat yogurt that contains few additives. Let it sit on your skin until it warms up and then rinse it off with tepid water. Apply as often as needed.
Well, I hope these are helpful. I will certainly be using some of them for my ailments! “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former Albert Einstein TMAV April 2010

The Olive, Pine and Orange trees surrounding the course, whilst providing wonderful scenery, will catch out the less accurate players Should you feel your skills need updating a little, then private lessons are available at this all year round course. Other services include a driving range with 25 bays, a putting green and practice bunker. The course is suitable for all levels of players, and if you know how to use the full range of clubs then you should achieve a decent score. Jose Maria Olazabal designed 9 of the holes, some particularly thought provoking as if you miss the green, all the skills of Championship player are needed to get back on track.
Javea Golf Club www.clubdegolfjavea.com golfenjavea@wanadoo.es The course was designed by Francisco Moreno
and opened in 1981. Situated 100 kilometres from Alicante on the way to Valencia, and sheltered from the wind by Cape San Antonio, the course has a perfect microclimate all the year round, and is located in a wonderful natural setting, surrounded by pinewoods. The course is a gently sloping 9 hole course with well-maintained greens and fairways flanked by palm trees, pine trees and orange trees. Although it has only 9 holes, on the second time around or back nine, many of the holes are played from different tees making it virtually an 18 hole course. Also the 4th / 13th green is large enough to accommodate two separate pin positions for each hole. The 6th presents difficulties, a par 4 with splendid views from a plateau green requiring a safe and precise drive to the dogleg. The 120 metre 16th is the shortest hole and the 475 metre 5th is the longest. Although it is not very long, it is certainly challenging as it is plagued by bunkers nearly all the way round 34 in total, and all of the greens have subtle runs, many of which are difficult to read. “Arnold Palmer is the biggest crowd-pleaser since the invention of the portable sanitary facility Bob Hope TMAV April 2010

Well here we are in 2010 and still going strong, so we must be doing something right! Despite the gloomy economic climate, our customers tell us they still enjoy our shop which is what we set out to achieve. Our stock of nearly 20,000 books changes almost daily and it‘s fair to say we cover pretty much all the main genres, including a massive range of children‘s books. Our DVD rentals are by far the lowest cost around at 50c a night, around a third of the normal price and we have a genuine 1,500 (and growing) titles in stock. We also have a super-fast internet café, again at low prices, but more importantly, in a comfortable quiet and relaxed atmosphere. Come in and see us. We‘d love to say hello.

Come and Join Us Jávea Players is the oldest and arguably the premier amateur theatre group on the Costa Blanca with our first production, ‘Murder by Request’, being staged in 1976. We are based at our Studio Theatre [C.Figueras Cronista Pachero 6, the road behind Bookworld España] where we audition, rehearse, build scenery, socialise and stage studio productions. At the moment we stage five productions a year: Spring and Autumn at the Union Musical, Gata, two at the Studio Theatre and an outdoor Summer Show with dinner. We also produce a number of radio plays each year for local English language radio stations. As well as all of this there are several social events during the year. There two types of Membership ~ Friends of Jávea Players who don't participate actively in productions but make a valuable contribution to us. They are welcome at all the social events, receive the regular Newsletter and have priority booking. Friends do not have a vote at the AGM. The Annual Subscription is 10€. They can also "upgrade" to be Members if they wish to take a more active part. Members of Jávea Players who do participate actively during productions either on stage or backstage and benefit from all the activities that are associated with the group. They do have a vote. The Annual Subscription is 10€.. You can join by contacting our Membership Secretary on 965790379 or by email to membership.jp@gmail.com. We also have a web site that gives more details of the society including the productions ~ www.javeaplayers.com
