Presidential Perspective Julie Arrison-Bishop

Thank you for voting for me to represent you as the newest president of the Wicked Running Club. I have been a member since 2009 and love everything about this club. It’s been amazing to be a part of the growth process and to watch the hard work of my predecessors come to fruition. Now, it’s my turn to bring your ideas, interests, and passions into reality for the club.

Salem nominated as a runner-friendly city for another five year period. We’ll also begin the process of updating our website so it reflects the club and who we are in 2016 and beyond--vibrant, energetic, and amazing.

I have a long history of working in nonprofits and being a part of board of directors. One of the biggest lessons I have walked away with is planning for smart growth. There are always new, big, awesome ideas. Responsible leaders think carefully about those ideas, work with their supporters, and don’t grow irresponsibly. The Wicked Running Club has done an amazing job growing memberships, local races, and supporting the running community.

We’ll also be reaching out to club members with a call to action. We greatly appreciate the support at local races, but we need a bit more to keep our club continuing on a path of greatness. The Wicked Running Register editor would love some “beat reporters” to help keep our bi-monthly newsletter fresh and full of information. We’d love a social activities coordinator to help plan the fun stuff outside of group runs--trivia night, bowling nights, etc. Many members have asked for supported long runs. We’d love to put together an army of volunteers to help out on weekends on a variety of courses to offer both refreshments and support to our runners. If you are interested in any of these, email me.

This year, we’ll be looking to “go regional” with what will hopefully be a growing presence on the USATF-NE race circuit. Jason Carraro and Melissa Jaynes have worked hard in the past few years to bring Wicked members into the fold of this series. In 2016, the new representative, Michael Paulin, will share news about an initiative to make that a reality with true club backing. Tim Short will be working hard with the RRCA to have

Let us not forget we are a running club! Besides our soon-to-be announced Wicked Grand Prix series, there are a number of other series you can take advantage of. From supporting your local YMCAs to hitting the trails with New England Running Company there is a little something for everyone out there. Challenge yourself with a new PR, a new distance, or a special accomplishment this year.

Speaking of running, we’re looking for a great coach for the season. The request for proposal in on the website and if you know someone that loves to run, has experience over a variety of distances and paces, and has an inspirational personality--send them our way! 2015 was a year of transition in our coaching program from starting it up with a long time and well loved area coach to someone who really blew up what many of us knew from past workouts and offered a wonderfully extraordinary challenge. We look forward to a more stable 2016 and thank both Mike Toomey and Junyong Pak for their service last season. 2016 is a great year for me to be president. After nine marathons in four years, I’m cooked and done. I’m planning on finding my running roots and training for 5Ks again. I need a break from the time and extended effort of distance running. I need to lose some of the bad habits I’ve picked up because of marathon training. I need time for strength training and yoga. I need time for family and friends. I need time for my newer work role at The House of the Seven Gables. And what will I do with what’s left at the day? Gladly serve the members of the Wicked Running Club.

2015 Grand Prix Series Wrap-up

That’s all folks, it’s over. The 2015 Wicked Grand Prix Series has come to a close. We had a great year with 192 Wicked members taking part in running at least one race in the series, and 13 finishing all 8 regular series races and both relays. With 346 members at years end, some quick math (courtesy of co-coordinator Don Gallucci) shows that 55% of all members participated in the WGP series this year. Well done folks, well done! When last we spoke, we were about to run the Wild Turkey 5 miler. On an unusually warm Thanksgiving morning, 120 Wicked members took to the streets of Salem to run the 12th annual race. This is the largest race on the North Shore, so it’s fitting that it gets the biggest turn out of Wicked members. Always a great event, put on by our very own club founder, Doug Bollen, Wicked walked (ran) away with lots of hardware. Congrats to Doug for another great annual tradition.

Chapruet, crushed the competition and brought Wicked it’s only overall brick since joining the Mill Cities Alliance 6 years ago. Incredible job guys! I will be giving out the awards for the WGP series at the Winter Banquet on Feb 6 @ the Moose Hall. This is always a great way to hang out with your Wicked team mates and have some food and a beer or two. Once again, I want to take a second to thank Don Gallucci for tabulating all the results all year long. Without him, we would just guess about who won what. He spends a great deal of time scrubbing races and collecting data. I write the columns and get you amped up to run (or scream at you at the finish line), but it’s Don behind the scenes making me look good. Thanks buddy! So from myself, and Don, thanks for a great 2015. Happy New Year, and keep on running!

Race Review by Tom Lubas

And then there’s the Mill Cities Relay. WOW!

Boston River Run 5k Boston, MA

Wicked sent 11 teams to this invitational event this year. While we all, obviously, did awesome, Wicked had 2 stand-out teams that day. The first of which was the team of Dave Long, Chris Nolan, Mike McKie, Mike Paulin and Brad Gates. They repeated as 2nd place age group brick winners in a very tough Male Masters category. Awesome guys!

I ran the Boston River Run 5K on Sunday 8 November 2015. It is run to help raise funds for the “Andrew Graham Semper Fi Fund” to endow a scholarship in Andy’s memory at the Bunker Community College. The race was represented by all the Armed Forces for Veteran’s Day and the National Anthem was sung prior to the start of the race. The 9 AM

But the highlight of the day had to be Wicked winning a 3rd place OVERALL brick. Led by Dan Chruniak, the Male Open team of Mark Dawson, Jason Matulewisz, Dan Vassello, and Chris

Wicked Kudos “Merry Xmas and Happy New Year’s.” to all the Wicked Running Club Members! Congrats to all the newly elected 2016 Wicked Running Club Officers and to all the outgoing 2015 Officers for doing another great job! See ya at the Banquet... - Tom Lubas Kudos to Beth Griffin! She paced me to two PR’s this year! The 10-miler at the NS 10-miler and a 5k at the Andover race for the troops. - Lisa Driscoll I would like to express my sincere thanks to Wicked Running Club for supporting the Festivus 5K for Autism held on December 13. Wicked members volunteered and ran at the race. Team Wicked even won the coed team award! As a result of these efforts, we raised over $15,000 that will be used to purchase technology for students with autism to help them learn and communicate. Go Wicked! - Rick, Cindy, Trevor, and Annabelle Johnson aka the Festivus Family

race starts and finishes in Artesani Park, Soldiers Field Road, Boston. It is a family friendly, flat scenic run along the Charles River. Quality dri-wick long sleeve shirt, swag bag with loads of free samples from many local vendors. Trophies to top 3 finishers males & females and top 3 each age group received medals. Age group award winners received a free U.S. Rafting Whitewater Trip Voucher ($150). Runners and spectators had a chance to purchase $1 raffle tickets to win 10 Prize Packs valued from to $1000 up to $3900 which included trips to Antigua, Barbados, Mexico and Disney Theme Parks. The 2015 Race raised $35,000.

Mike is a tall guy with a big personality and even bigger smile. He is always at races with camera in hand, getting friends and club members together for memorable photos. One of my fondest memories is always seeing Mike at the Stone Tower race, getting runners to do push ups after they climb the hill to the Tower (and of course he takes pictures). When I contacted Mike about writing this announcement, he replied, “I am so inspired by every one of my Wicked Running friends from the fastest runners to the slowest, every one of them helps to keep me going and makes me want to keep coming back for more.”

Mike runs trail and road races, volunteers Mike, back at you. Thanks for inspiring us, and thank you for at Lynn Woods and other trail events, and capturing memories with your camera where ever you go. organizes and leads boot-camp-style work-

The Member of the Month is... Doug Bollen - December

More than 10 years ago, Doug was a co-founder of the Wicked Running Club with Mike and Jen Toomey and has helped grow our membership since then through his love of running and dedication to the club. He served on the Wicked Board for about 8 years total and was one of the founders of the Wicked Kidz, MOTM, and Frosty Four road races. As Salem’s Park and Rec Director from 2002-2012, Doug had a huge impact on the local running scene. He brought running clinics to Salem hiring Mike and Jen as coaches. He started the first race series in area with the Salem Race series and initiated the Wild Turkey race 12 years ago as well as the Olde Salem

Greens 5k and Derby Street Mile. Doug still race directs the Wild Turkey and the Bridge & Back 10K, and also co-directs the NERC 10 Mile race and the Tapleyville 7 Miler. As if this weren’t enough, Doug also currently directs the NERC-Brooks Race series. See photo of Doug with a bullhorn -- a familiar sight to many of us! Doug’s current position is Chief of Operations at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem. Doug’s love for and commitment to Wicked and the sport of running is shown in so many ways. He said, “It’s been great making so many friends and seeing so many people become lifelong friends from being involved in the Wicked Running Club.”

Mike and Doug were nominated to be Members of the Month by a fellow club member. You can nominate someone, too. Just email Michele at michelejcampbell@yahoo.com. This year’s members of the month were:

The Wicked Running Club encourages members to sign up for and compete in the USA Track & Field (USATF) New England Grand Prix series. By competing in the USATF NE series, members can score points for themselves and the Club, as well as create a greater presence in the running community for our Club (i.e. get our name out there with the likes of the BAA, Greater Boston, etc.!). The races in the series range from a 5k to a marathon and are likely some of the races you are already familiar with, as well as some new ones in areas of New England you have never been. And this series is for runners of ALL levels!

9

USA TRACK & FIELD GRAND PRIX SERIES! Although the Club is already a member of USATF, in order to score in the Grand Prix series, members must also be Individual members. An annual Individual membership is only $30 (the cost of a 5k road race!!). As an incentive to become an Individual member and participate in the USATF NE Grand Prix series, Wicked has offered to reimburse the race fees for up to five (5) runners at each race in the Grand Prix series (chosen at random from all those that compete in each race, must be both an active Wicked member with an Individual USATF membership at the time of the race event). Several of the Grand Prix races even offer a discounted entry fee to Individual USATF members. More information on the USATF series can be found both on the Wicked website (http://wickedrunningclub.com/ race-info/usatf-ne-grand-prix/) and the USATF NE website at (http://www. usatfne.org/). In the past, jackets have been given to individual runners who complete all seven of the USATF-NE events.

The USATF rules require a minimum of five (5) men or women to score as a male/female team at each race in the Grand Prix series. Again, the Wicked Running Club encourages members to sign up for and compete in the Grand Prix series, and it would be even better to score at least one (if not more!) male and female team at several of the races in the 2016 race series. The series kicks off with a fun 5k in Cambridge, the An Ras Mor 5k (http://www.srr.org/anrasmor/) on Sunday, March 6th...several other Wicked members will be there... will you?!?! There are other members to being aUSATF member, such as discounted subscriptions and offers (for more information, check out the USATF NE Membership page (http://www.usatfne.org/member/). In addition to the road running series detailed above, the USATF also offers Cross-Country and Track & Field events for all levels of runners, for those interested. http://www.usatfne.org/road/gp.html

Wild Turkey Run by Doug Bollen Another Successful Wild Turkey Run! On an unseasonably warm Thanksgiving morning in Salem, nearly 2000 runners, volunteers and spectators took to the streets of Salem to start their holiday participating in the 12th Annual Wild Turkey 5-Mile Run! On behalf of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem, thank you to our participants for joining us in our 12th annual Run. Your generosity and support of this annual event benefits our youth programs, and for that we are truly thankful. This year’s Wild Turkey Run was the largest in its’ 12 year history and remains the largest race on the North Shore. We have added over 1900 additional runners since our inception in 2004! With this continued climb, this event has firmly taken its place beside other traditions such as High School Football, turkey and pumpkin pie. Some interesting statistics from this year’s Wild Turkey 5-Mile Run: For the 9th year in a row, women runners outnumbered men, 61% to 39%. Runner ages ranged from 8 years old to 75 years old! A

winning time of 25:59 was turned in by the first place finisher, Caleb Evanter from Dorchester. The female winner was Kylynn McKinley from Marblehead, who won for the second straight year in a time of 31:20. Competitors joined us from across the country, representing the states of Alabama, West Virginia, California, Virginia, Connecticut, Colorado, Illinois, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Pennsylvania, Utah and Washington. This great event could not be possible without the support of our community sponsors. Major sponsors include: New England Running Company, Brooks Sports Co., Ernst & Young, Butterworth & O’Toole Inc., Dunkin Donuts, Herrick Lutts Realty Partners and Perry & Perry Attorneys at Law. Additional race sponsors and donors include: DeIulis Brothers Construction, Café Graziani, McDonough Family, North Shore Road Race Guide, Cape Cod Potato Chips, Clarke Brothers Fuel, Boston Herald, Salem Moose Family Center, Kaloutas Painting, EBSCO, A&A Services, John J. Walsh Insurance, East Boston Savings Bank, www.salemroadraces.com, Serafini, Darling & Correnti, Dr. Pat Curtin, Cataldo Ambulance and StephenOGrady.com. Special gratitude to the many volunteers who donated their Thanksgiving morning

to help at the race: Tom O’Shea, Beth O’Grady, Beth Zois, Laura Knight, Amy Walsh, Natalie and Erik Thelen, Grace Duran, Mario Fagone, Patty Carter, Ed Zielinski, Natalie and Eric Thelen, Meghan Murtagh, Don Gallucci, Lauren Gable, Ben Hartley, Tom St. Pierre, Lisa Cammarata, Leighton O’Connor, Jason Cararro, Sandy Dalton, TR Ramsdell, Alison, Kerry and Natalie Phelan, Dave Gilbert, James Forina, Sandy George, Paul Cranney, John Landry, and the great cheering group from the Willows neighborhood. Special thanks to the Salem Police who did a great job of controlling the traffic during the race to keep the runners safe, and to the many Salem residents along the route who cheered our runners on!

I like to run and bike and joined Wicked in order to start making some running connections in the area for training and for social activities. Favorite race: My favorite race is the Oklahoma City Memorial Half-Marathon. (Haven’t run the full yet.) You cannot beat the crowd support all along the route. Makes it a lot of fun. Favorite distance: I’ve only been running for the last three years. Worked my way up from 5K’s to half-marathons and enjoy that distance a lot. However, I ran my first marathon in November (Route 66 in Tulsa) and had a great time. Goal for this year: to run a 4:00 marathon. I did a 4:28:26 on my first try, which I think was pretty good for a 65-year-old. Hope to get the 4:00 at the OKC Memorial in April. When I’m not running I like to: For physical activity, in addition to running, I bike a lot

CARRIE-ANN LEBRECQUE Salem Joined Wicked because: to meet other runners in the area and for the camaraderie and support at local races. Favorite race: The Space Coast Half Marathon in Cocoa Beach, FL. Every year I go to Florida for a girls’ weekend with my friend from Ohio filled with beer, food, racing and key lime pie. Favorite distance: is the half. I never in a million years thought I’d ever say that! Goal for this year: For 2016, I’d like to improve my half time and get down to 2:15 (I’m at 2:30 now). When I’m not running I like to: I’m a huge fan of 90s music. During the week, my job as

a Materials Engineer keeps me inside. In my spare time I love hiking! On weekends you can find me on top of a mountain in New Hampshire. LISA DRISCOLL Joined Wicked because: I joined in 2011 but I didn’t participate until 2014 Mill Cities Relay. I finally got some Wicked gear. I joined wicked after going to several races alone and not knowing anyone. I figured if I joined a local running club, I’d know people at races. Well...being a bit shy, I didn’t introduce myself and spent 2012 and 2013 without knowing people. Finally in 2014 I saw a ost about Slowest Runner Sets the Pace and knew I could find my tribe! Thanks to Kelly Pheulpin, I met wonderful peeps, joined the Mill Cities Relay, participated in the Newport 10-miler, NS 10-miler, NERC 10-miler in 2015 and got to meet many other wonderful Wicked peeps! I have made so many new friends through Wicked this past year! Favorite race: Devil’s Chase 6.66 but I love the Lynn Woods Series just as much! I was fortunate to hook up with the Donut Worry Be Happy Folks thanks to Elaine Goldman, what a fun group to run with ( and....have fun after) even though I am the slowest runner. I end up running by myself most days but my 3 miles and their 4 miles puts us at the same end point and we have fun after. It is all about the fun! Goal for this year: my 5th Sarasota Half Marathon in March in FL. My first 70.3 Triathlon in MA in June. My 2nd in August in ME and to do the long runs in Lynn Woods. When I’m not running I like to: cook, I quilt, knit, read and have the best two black rescue kittens ever even though Michele Campbell and Shannon Downey and even Pete Graves may dispute. They have awesome black kitties too!

The Wicked Running Register • November/December 2015/January 2016 • newsletter@wickedrunningclub.com DAN VASSALLO Joined Wicked because:I joined Wicked because Gates, Chruniak, Nolin, Paulin, and others started courting me for the Mill Cities Relay team since literally St. Patrick’s Day at the New Bedford Half Marathon. (They probably didn’t see how poorly I ran that day.) My regional club team is CMS, and one of the cooler aspects of the Relay is that my CMS teammates split up once a year and run for other squads because CMS is not part of the Mill Cities Alliance. Guys who are usually my teammates run for Somerville, Gate City, Winner’s Circle, and now Wicked. I told Brad in March that I was interested, and once I got the blessing from the Goon Squad, for whom I raced last year, I was part of the mission to earn us a brick. I was really proud of my teammates, as I told them, because they made it a great Mill Cities experience: their 1-2-3-5 legs were faster than any other team I’ve ever run for, including my 2010 team that used to hold the course record. Favorite race: Brendan’s Home Run 5K in Belmont on Father’s Day. I have perfect attendance there, I’ve won it seven times, and despite the fact that I’ve lost four in a row and I’ll probably never win it again, they still treat me like royalty. I grew up with that race, and they grew up with me. Favorite distance: is the marathon, because the only thing I’m good at is running 5:10-5:15 miles for a long time. That makes me a better-than-average marathon runner. Goal for this year: is to not come in last in the United States Olympic Marathon Trials on February 13. That, and to run up the score on the Tufts kids at Mill Cities on December 4, 2016. Secret Talent: I can sing like Shaggy (the Jamaican rap/pop artist from the 1990s) and I can play air hockey quite well. I’d say

I was good at chugging Guinness, but Dave Long handed me my first lifetime loss, by a significant margin, on Sunday. When I’m not running I like to: spend time with my wife Katrina, go to work, watch baseball, play Wiffle Ball, and listen to the wisdom of economist and philosopher Jay W. Jenkins, otherwise known as Young Jeezy.

KATHERINE FULLER Joined Wicked because: I am a new Salem resident and wanted to find some new running buddies in the area. Plus I needed the scoop on the best locales for pizza and beer long runs on the North Shore :) Favorite race: Chicago Marathon Favorite distance: Half Marathon Goal for this year: Run 31 miles on my 30th birthday! Secret Talent: I love West African dance and spend my summers studying it in a rural village in Ghana. When I’m not running I like to: I’m a music teacher in Bedford, MA and am attempting to get my masters in opera performance next fall in Boston. BETH SOUSA ZOIS Joined Wicked because: To meet more local runners and get more involved in the running community in Salem. Favorite race: The Witch City 5k was my first, so it has special meaning to me. I love the Festivus 5k because I like the course and the money raised goes to a wonderful cause. Favorite distance: 5ks are fun races, but I also like half marathons. Goal for this year: I need to bring back the joy to my running and plan to do this by running more just for the fun of it and volunteering at local races.

I also love to travel, learn about different cultures, and bake/cook in my kitchen. PATTY SCARPETTI Joined Wicked because: I wanted to belong to a running club. I’m a ‘Fluxxer’ and love them, but I felt like I needed More and the Wicked Runners always looked like they were having fun, and they were also encouraging! Favorite race: Tunnel to the Tower on September 27, 2015 in New York, NY. It was an incredible experience to run the path that Stephen Siller did on September 11, 2001. Can’t wait to do it next year. Favorite distance: I trained for the Bay State Half Marathon in October this year and started doing long runs. Before the training my longest run was a 10K, I found that I really enjoyed running 8-10 miles on Revere Beach by myself. Now I try to do a long run at least once a week. Well, I was ! Need to get back into it! Secret Talent: I am am awesome crocheter!! I make baby blankets, hats scarves, ear warmer’s!
