Presidential Perspective Michael Harvey

In 1964 Bob Dylan famously penned the lyric, “The times they are a changing’”. In the case of the Wicked Running Club, I am going to paraphrase Dylan and say, “The times they have a changed”. For years the club enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the city of Salem through the Parks and Recreation director (and a founding member of Wicked) Doug Bollen. The relationship was only strengthened by the fact that long time member and former Wicked president Tim Short served as the Activities Coordinator in that very same department. A few years ago, however, Doug left his position with the city to pursue other opportunities, and shortly after that, so did Tim. As many members may be aware, the change in leadership at Park and Recreation has had a direct effect on Wicked and how we operate within the city of Salem, some of which was a bit bumpy. The good news is that things have settled down, and the Wicked Running Club still enjoys a good relationship the city, albeit different. If all is well, then why am I writing about it now you might ask? The answer is simple. When Doug and Tim left Parks and Recreation, we lost more than we initially realized. Not only did we lose our advocates in that department, we lost our voice in city government as well. As a running club, we really can’t complain about changes in race fees,

cost of police detail, or any other host of issues that come up with regards to working with the city if we aren’t participating in the political process and making our voice heard. The Wicked Running Club contributes to the Salem community in many significant ways. Our races bring in hundreds of tourist from out of town who spend their money at local business. Proceeds from Miles Over the Moon go to a local track team each year to help fund equipment purchases. The Frosty Four funds thousands of dollars in scholarships to local college students. These are no small accomplishments. This realization came to light at the September Board of Directors meeting, and the board members all agreed that we need a presences and a voice in local government. We think the best way to accomplish this is would be through a new non-board position, City of Salem Liaison. Like politics? Like city government? Love running and the Wicked Running Club? Want to make a difference? If you answered “yes” to all or most of these questions, The Wicked Running Club needs you. We are looking for someone to fill this position. What the exact duties will be have yet to be determined, but if you think you might be interested, please contact me or any board member and let us know. Who better to help “run” local government than a running club? Go Wicked!

Race Review by Eileen Spear

The courir-saint-bruno has a 1k 2k 5k 10k and 20k. Really fun, distance for all. Scenic trail style running through a national park about 30mn from Montreal. http://www.courir-saint-bruno. ca/ I ran the 10k. I would give the race 4 cats….only reason it is not 5 is that registration closes out quickly so difficult to get a last minute spot. Organizers great and post race snacks and atmosphere also great.

Coaching Committee Update

Michael Toomey resigned from his position as The Wicked Running Club coach in late July. The board sprung to action knowing that coaching is an important benefit and Mike Paulin, TR Ramsdell, and Julie Arrison formed a coaching committee to both select the interim coach and to prepare for interviewing and hiring the 2016 Wicked Running Club coach. The committee’s first order of business was to find and select an interim coach. After an email to the club a number of candidates came forward. The coaching committee decided to select Junyong Pak of Beverly as the interim coach. Pak is a talented runner and athlete whose most notable claim to fame is being a two-time World’s Toughest Mudder. In the few weeks that Pak has been at the helm club members have received an introductory email that shared Pak’s training philosophy as well as weekly workouts. Mike Paulin, a member of the coaching committee, said that Pak has spent hours making plans that will improve the abilities of all runners. Please join the club at Beverly High School on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. Stay tuned for a late fall location as the sun sets earlier. The coaching committee has also reviewed the coaching plans of other local clubs to see how we can improve both the recruitment and coaching process. Julie Arrison had conversations with the group that coaches the North Shore Striders, Mystic Runners, the Somerville Road Runners, HFC, and MVS. While our program has a number of similarities to other club programs there are differences in the types of workouts offered, the way race teams are handled, and how coaches are paid. The committee also sent out a survey to the membership and nearly 30% of current members gave us some very valuable feedback. The most important results to share are that most runners want coached interval

workouts with a coach that can work with a variety of abilities. 50% of the respondents are regular participants in the weekly workouts and the other 50% knew about the workouts but do not participate due to conflicts ranging from injury to families to work. About 50% of the respondents stated that they would be willing to pay a coach for more services but did not support a dues increase of more than $5.00 based on an individual membership. The committee will take all of the information shared and use it in the interview process for the 2016 coach. Keep your eyes open in the coming months for the 2016 Wicked Running Club Coach request for proposal (RFP). If you know someone interested in the position or have worked with a great coach on your own, please feel free to share the RFP. We’re hoping for a great pool of applicants to grow our coaching program and to satisfy the needs of our membership. We encourage our members to keep the dialog going. While the survey is closed, please feel free to email any member of the committee, juliearrison@gmail.com, mpaulin444@gmail.com, or mopartr@comcast.net or share your ideas and opinions at a group run or race. Thanks to everyone for their patience and support in this process, and, again, big welcome to Junyong Pak!

Wicked Grand Prix Series 2015

T.R. Ramsdell

Okay, hang on guys and gals. It’s been a long time since we’ve talked (I’ve missed you all), and we’ve got a lot to cover in a short amount of time so let’s do this! We’ve run 4 races since our last chat. Trav’s trail 5K-ish waay back on May 17, had 33 Wickeds attend. I dislike trails. I’m clumsy on trails. I love this race. The course is fairly wide, not very “technical”, but has some nice hills to make it challenging. One of my favorite races evah! The next race on the docket was the Twin Lobster Half on June 7 in Gloucester. This was the second year that I put this in the series. It’s fairly challenging because of the distance, and the fact that it’s in Gloucester, and that means it’s hilly! There were 20 Wickeds that ran it, with many picking up some hardware for the effort. Not the least of which was our very own MAL Mike Paulin winning the whole damn race (I don’t think the kid even broke a sweat!). Congrats to Mike and all our age group winners. The Derby Mile (my personal all-time favorite race in the universe) has had its attendance drop off significantly over the past few years since it slipped through the grasp of Doug Bollen. But it took place on August 21 regardless, with 46 Wickeds taking part. I’d like to tell you all about the age group winners that Wicked had, but they didn’t bother

giving out awards this year. Top 10 overall got a coupon for a discount on a Park and Rec program. Guess which race wont be returning to the WGP series next year? Bueller? Lynn Woods. WOW! Wicked sent 20 teams to the woods on Aug 26, and kicked some major trail ass while there. With one out of every 5 runners wearing a red Wicked jersey, visually, and more importantly athletically, we crushed the other clubs. You guys are getting pretty fast out there. We put 11 teams on the podium including sweeping Men’s Masters and Female Masters categories. Seriously? Congrats to all you speedy trail kitty cats. Once all the awards were given out, we headed over to Prince Pizza for some grub and brewskies to celebrate. Next up is the Lone Gull 10K on Sept 20. This is a great course along the ocean with fantastic views as you nail that PR. This very fast, fairly flat course is always a perennial favorite among local runners. Cool thing is you get breakfast after. Oh sure, there’s no free beer like my races, but breakfast is good too, right? Don’t miss this one. Ok, that was a lot to cover in one issue. Don’t forget to wear your red Wicked gear at races. Get in touch with Susan Hennessey and get some if you haven’t gotten any yet. See y’all at the Lone Gull 10K! I’ll be there, will you? C’mon, who’s in?

The Member of the Month is... Aaron Toleos - June

For many years now Aaron has been quietly helping the club by being our volunteer go-to developer and back-end technical expert for the Wicked Web site. Aaron was invaluable earlier this year when our Web site was unfortunately hacked. He quickly and efficiently helped us remove the hacker’s message and worked hard to get the site up and running again (along with fellow member Tim Short). “Living in Boxford, it can be hard to get to Wicked events in the Salem area, so I love being able to give back to the club by helping with the Web site.” —Aaron Aaron runs both trails and road. Here are some other interesting things about Aaron. He’s:

• The behind-the-scenes guy at the D5K and posts the results each week, and manages the Web site and Facebook page. He’s been running since the first night back in 2007. • Involved with the development of the Boxford Rail Trail. Trail Cats, let him know if you want a tour: aaron@toleos.com! • The Throws Coach for Masco Youth Track & Field program specializing in the javelin. Six of his throwers just placed at the USATF Junior Olympics New England Championships including all three of his children: Adam (1st 7/8s), James (2nd 11/12s), and Annie (6th 13/14s). • Looking forward to Masco Youth XC this fall which he also coaches. “Shout out to anyone in the Masco area: We need coaches. Contact me if you’re interested (aaron@toleos. com).” For being our June Member of the Month, Aaron received a $25 gift certificate to New England Running Company. Thank you, Aaron. BIG hugs and high-fives for all you do for Wicked and the local running community!

The Member of the Month is... Don Gallucci - July

Don is our numbers guy; he spends several hours per race calculating Wicked Grand Prix results. This responsibility takes time, focus, and dedication. Lucky for us, he loves math! Over the past couple years, Don has also volunteered for local races, both to help on the course and for number pickup. Most recently he helped with Doug Bollen’s “Bridge & Back 10K”. You can find Don most Wednesday nights at the D5K, and usually he sends out the morning email to the D5K group to coordinate the early run (which is supposed to be the D15K, but is usually 6 to 9 miles depending on the weather). Don hopes to complete his second marathon this fall and has been using the Wicked track workouts to help him meet this goal.

Over the past 3 years, Don has completed (nearly) all of the Wicked Grand Prix Series races. He’s also truly enjoyed being on the Lynn Woods, Mill Cities, and Lake Winnepesaukee Relay Teams, often serving as team captain. All of Don’s sons all run! Kyle (13) runs both Cross Country and Track at Briscoe Middle School in Beverly. Alex (11) just broke the North Beverly Elementary record for the mile with a time of 5:35. Ryan (11) is a fantastic runner who qualified in the Wicked Grand Prix last year. He is well on his way to qualify again, and ran his longest race ever with the Tapleyville 7.1 Miler this year. See attached photo of Don and Ryan, with friend Ali P., at the Wicked Banquet, where Ryan got a trophy! Go Galluccis! Don said, “Being part of Wicked over the past 4 years has been a wonderful experience. There’s nothing better than seeing that sea of red cheering for each other during a race!”

The Member of the Month is... Kelly Pheulpin - August

Many of you know Kelly as our inspirational leader for the “Slowest Runner Sets the Pace” group run. This is not just one run a week — Kelly has turned this into multiple group runs each week, and also has the group cycling! She manages the Facebook page for Slowest Runners and is committed to posting runs and other activities, encouraging members to join her whenever she goes out to exercise. Attached is a group selfie from a recent run (Kelly is in front).

Kelly has done so much for the club: she bakes for the Winter Banquet and Summer Outing (including gluten-free and vegan sweets!), she is organizing fall social events, and she attends board meetings (and is a former board member). Her daughter Ali runs races with club members and helps give out the Grand Prix awards at the Banquet. Outside of Wicked, Kelly is committed to helping others live a healthy lifestyle. She shares her own stories and started a Healthy Living Facebook group (many Wickeds participate!). She is deeply involved with diabetes education. She volunteers at the Barton Center for Diabetes Education helping families with children newly diagnosed with diabetes. There she teaches families how to make healthy food choices and shows them how to make skinny versions of family favorites.

Kelly is also a certified Zumba instructor teaching at the Salem and Cape Ann YMCAs. She has invited Wicked members to join her classes, even providing free passes when available. Many Kelly was nominated for Member of the Month by a fellow Wicked members now enjoy the fun cross-training of Zumba and Wicked member. You can nominate someone, too. From Wicked Member Barbara Meader

I am a member of Wicked and have been for a few years. My family has been hit with a major tragedy (my brother in law Jeremy Eschelbacher - an avid runner - died suddenly of a massive heart attack in his sleep) and I want to get word out to my fellow Wickeds that there is a need for support. Jeremy grew up in Swampscott and attended Salem State so he is definitely connected to the North Shore and was inspired to join his own running club because of my involvement with Wicked. He became a member of the Highland City Striders (a running club in his community).

Jeremy was an adoring husband, father, son, brother, friend - he was a happy and healthy man - truly an amazing person. He was fit as a fiddle, a runner training for a 50K in October. Jeremy was single handedly renovating their home in Berlin, MA. He was also a high school physics teacher at Grafton High for many years. The school has set up a memorial scholarship fund in honor of his dedication to his students and a fundraising page for the family particularly for the renovation project. Jeremy’s running club has also set up an account for the children.

Race Review by Brian Chisholm July 24th was the inaugural running of the Race for the Water Stop. This race is run every year on the same date as the Miles Over the Moon Race. It’s not run every year; it only goes on years when the entire water stop supply is stolen. This year Patsy Emberley and I were assigned to the first water stop for the MOTM race. So by default we became the first two registered runners of the Race for the Water Stop. The pre-race warm up was to walk from the Knights of Columbus hall to 143 Federal Street where we were supposed to set up a water stop. It was a hot muggy night but our warm-up walk went well. We saw a rainbow to the North and we

stopped and chatted with volunteers who were on station for the MOTM race. When we got to 143 Federal Street we looked around for our supplies but there was nothing. We made some frantic calls to MOTM race headquarters asking to confirm the location of the supplies. We were at the correct location. We looked in the front yard, back yard, and porch but found nothing. I ran up and down Federal looking at all the houses but found nothing. We were about 12 minutes to gun time for the MOTM race. At 7:52pm I got a text from race control that said, “Feel free to cheer from there.” Aaaaagh! I’m sure I let out a scream or two at that point. The Federal Street neighbors must have thought there was a crazy man roaming the ‘hood. We have

over 400 runners heading our way, it’s a hot muggy night, and they need water! People die in races, they need water, Aaaaaaagh! About that time Julie Arrison came to the starting line of the Race for the Water Stop. She said she had supplies at the Phillips house and we could set up a water stop there. So with 8 minutes to go before the start of the MOTM race, we started the RFTWS race with Julie as the 3rd registered runner. The course is a flat and fast 1/4 of a mile. Certification by the USATF is pending, however this is race is not a Boston Qualifier as some would believe. The race starts out at 143 Federal Street and takes a left onto Flint Street. It crosses over Essex Street. We had a detail officer from Salem PD there to cross us on Essex Street even though she was there for the secondary race, (the MOTM). Julie was in 1st place for the whole race. I was in second place and tried to catch her but couldn’t. I didn’t run the tangents, my cadence was off and I bonked at mile 1/8 but I hung in there and kept Julie in my sights. Patsy maintained a respectable 3rd place. We continued on Flint Street

and took a left onto Chestnut Street. After turning onto Chestnut Street Julie heard a voice yelling, “Julie, are you all right?” The voice was Katie Casiglia’s. Apparently she saw Julie running down Chestnut Street in a skirt and high heels, with a big galoot running after her and thought the worst. Julie yelled back to her that our water stop was stolen; we have to set one up at the Phillips House. So as Julie crossed the finish line first followed by myself then Patsy, Katie Casiglia ran up and started helping us create a water stop from thin air. Oh, that’s right; this wasn’t just a road race. It was a duathalon. The reason will become apparent when the awards are given out. So after the run segment we hauled out

two garden hoses. We turned the water on and let it run while we set up tables. Patsy and I both tasted the water before we started filling cups, it was fine. We wouldn’t serve anything we wouldn’t drink ourselves. Julie found everything we needed, tables, cups, even recycle bins. I couldn’t believe she had everything we needed in that old house, and it is an old house. It must be 100 years old. I didn’t want to say anthing but it’s time for an upgrade. Something like a Dutch Colonial with an

The Wicked Running Register • July/August 2015 • newsletter@wickedrunningclub.com attached garage off the back would be nice. But Julie likes the old house so I guess we’re gonna keep it. Anyway, at about 8:08 the first runners came by. We knew the first few wouldn’t be drinking so we kept filling cups. It went fast using the garden hose. As more runners came by, more of them started drinking. Most runners didn’t know there was water stop problem. There was plenty water for everyone. Julie even held one hose up as a shower and it was used frequently. So at the conclusion of the Race for the Water Stop, awards were given out, first for the run and then for the water stop setup. Coming in 1st place overall was Julie Arrison. Coming in 1st place in the men’s division was Brian Chisholm and coming in 1st place in the Female, 55 to 59 age bracket was Patsy Emberley. The water stop segment of the duathlon was a photo finish between Julie, who engineered the replacement water stop, and Katie who jumped into action in a moment’s notice. 1st place was given to the lovely Katie Casiglia. So all registered entrants in this race went home with a first place trophy. I would give this race 5 cats. I would also give one over flowing kitty litter box to the asshat who stole our water stop supplies and made us scramble to make sure that 473 runners had water.

Wicked Summer BBQ On Saturday, August 8th Wicked members and their families enjoyed food and fun at Camp Naumkeag. It was a day of spectacular weather and plenty of delicious food. A special thanks to TR Ramsdell for manning the grill and to Julie Arrison for helping to make sure the day ran smoothly. Wicked hosts this event every summer and it is really a way to get together and relax.
