GEORGETOWN

When you spend your life with a busy and active family, like William and Samar Langhorne, you want a warm and inviting space to call home. Their original 1960’s Georgetown classic home, while beautiful, did not allow for the design the family wanted. So they worked with architects Rixey-Rixey to get the exact home they did want.

BRINGING NATURE INSIDE

It began with a tear down, to the original foundation, to rebuild the home to 4 stories, from 2 1/2 stories. This created more vertical space to incorporate the architectural details that would come to define the uniqueness of the home including the custom Bulthaup kitchen from Germany, a glass elevator and oversized windows and skylights that let in an abundance of natural light. The home would also come to be just two in the area with energy efficient heating system.

There is a NanaWall between the living room and back yard which, when opened will create a seamless transition between the two spaces, combining the outdoors and the indoors. This creates a comfortable atmosphere and connection to nature, which is hard to obtain when you build in an Urban development.

To create this specific look, Carlisle worked with the team to customize a whitewash finish. Since whitewash can be a challenging finish to apply on-site after installation, the flooring was prefinished to order. This saved a tremendous amount of time, since there wasn’t any stain or finished to be applied.

Most prefinished flooring is mass produced in large batches, so from batch to batch you can run the risk of inconsistent colors.

CUSTOM CHOICES

Carlisle is unique in that we use small batch prefinishing methods so we constantly check the floor throughout the finish process to make sure the floor always falls into the color expectations of the floor. This ensures a consistent and high quality finish on every board, throughout the entire floor.

SEATTLE

Daniel and Vangie Peppers’ interior design tastes are about as different as night and day. Daniel explains, “My personal style has eclectic chaos. Fortunately, my wife prefers more elegance and quiet.” Their home, set on the banks of Lake Washington in Seattle, reflects a harmony of both styles.

Vangie Pepper had a vision and a Pinterest board long before she ever had the collaborative dream team who would make her design vision a reality. “Even before Pinterest she had folders — one would be labeled powder room; one would be kitchen,” Daniel says of his wife. She brought the Pinterest collection to designer Lisa Staton at the start of the project. “If you look at all the pins (images) as a whole, you can get a strong insight into the essence or emotion

that a client is striving to have in their home,” Staton said. Staton used the images as a basis for inspiration, and to identify the overall look and feel the clients were seeking for their home. She then worked with architect Tim Hossner, of RHO Architects, to translate the mood and style of the images into the revamped spaces and tangible textures, colors, patterns, and furnishings of real life.

When it came to taking the plunge and make the ultimate selection, the couple chose to go with a Walnut wide plank floor from Carlisle. The 10-inch-wide hardwood drastically reduced the number of noticeable seams and allowed the floor to flow easily from room to room. It blended seamlessly with the overall design and provided far less visual distraction, unlike homes with floors made from narrow planks. Traditional in look and feel, the naturally warm Walnut is balanced by both the width and length of the planks, which are ideal for homes with contemporary, open-concept floorplans.

BROOKLINE

There are some interiors that take your breath away, they become even more awe inspiring when you discover the story of how they were created. An historic home in Brookline, Massachusetts may epitomize these sentiments.

After over a century of piecemeal renovations this iconic structure in Brookline’s 19th century residential history had become a deceivingly decrepit, nearly uninhabitable abode. Enter an ambitious Belgian, intent on relocating to the Boston area and settling on this historic property. Little did he know the extent to which the building would need to be renovated to make it not just beautiful, but habitable.

Now enter a Boston-based “intentionally small, full service architectural firm”, BUTZ + KLUG Architecture, with a knack for extraordinary beauty and an eye for detail. This combination of client and architect would be just what the home needed to bring it back to greatness. Working arm in arm with the construction firm, Bay Point Builders, the work began.

The architect worked closely with the design team at the Carlisle Boston Showroom, and helped create a wood floor design that would fulfill the homeowner’s exact vision.

Given the historic significance of the space, wide plank White Oak with a unique “brushed” surface was the perfect fit; the dimension and texture were appropriate for the scale of the interwoven spaces as well as looking completely at home in a 19th century building – strip oak floors would not only have been lost in the scale of the spaces, but would have minimized the authentic look of the home. The only exception to this was the use of a custom herringbone plank floor in the family room – another European inspired floor design, that remains popular “across the pond.”
