art KARLSRUHE 2015 – Where art meets art From 5 to 8 March 2015, 210 galleries from eleven countries, amongst them 32 newcomers, will be transforming the exhibition halls into a vibrant place of art. The scope of art KARLSRUHE covers classic modern to contemporary art and brings together works from all the key movements in this period. The spectrum in the four halls ranges from Impressionism, Expressionism and Neue Sachlichkeit to important post-war positions such as the Informel, concrete art, ZERO and pop art right through to neoexpressionist painting, street art and the most recent contemporary art. At the same time, the clear layout of the halls with 160 one-artist shows, 19 sculpture zones, and numerous rest areas create an “art landscape” with an architectural feel, inviting those within it to intensive viewing, concentrated analysis, and stress-free shopping. We look forward to your visit in Karlsruhe. You’re always welcome!

ARTIMA art meeting Collecting – more than a passion? People who collect art as a matter of course are captivated by beauty and the element of discovery, those who want to come to grips with the artists’ messages as intensively as possible – or those who simply want to decorate their home. No collector will get far in building up a significant collection without a certain amount of passion. Nevertheless, the annually growing circle of internationally active collectors is increasingly endeavouring to do more than just amass pictures, sculptures, photos, and installations. Instead, attention is being focussed more on numerous questions: in which direction should a significant art collection grow? What outlay is involved?

Award ceremonies The interface between art and writing: the Hans Platschek Prize The award ceremony for the Hans Platschek Prize for Art and Writing has been a firm fixture at art KARLSRUHE for eight years. At art KARLSRUHE 2015 it is being presented to the artist Rikuo Ueda, born in Japan in 1950. He is known for his virtuosic drawings and sketches for which he lets the wind guide the brush. His juror is Dr Sebastian Giesen, a member of the board of the Hans Platschek Foundation.

The art KARLSRUHE Prize for the best One-Artist-Show

The art journalist Carl Friedrich Schröer will be delving into the question of whether collecting is more than a passion and exploring the personal motivation behind buying art in a panel discussion with renowned experts and well-known collectors.

Baden-Württemberg and the City of Karlsruhe will be jointly awarding the art KARLSRUHE Prize for the eighth time. In 2015, too, it will be interesting to see who sets up the most compelling presentation. The prize-winners, both the gallery owner and the exhibiting artist, are selected by a panel of expert judges. The artworks bought with the prize money of €15,000 are added to the art KARLSRUHE Collection.

“Some like it cool” – the Schaufler collection In keeping with tradition, this year’s special showcase at art KARLSRUHE is dedicated to a prime example of the buzzing collector scene in Baden-Württemberg. Reduced forms, materials such as metal or mirror surfaces and monochromes in white, silver, and blue are characteristic features of many of the works that the Swabian entrepreneur Peter Schaufler, senator h. c., and his wife Christiane Schaufler-Münch have brought together in more than three decades. The husband and wife team Schaufler put their collection, comprising over 3500 exhibits with a focus on works from the ZERO movement, minimal art, conceptual art, and Concrete Art, on show in SCHAUWERK, their private museum. For art KARLSRUHE, SCHAUWERK director Barbara Bergmann is putting some 30 exemplary key works of the collection, amongst them works by Sylvie Fleury, Imi Knoebel, Thomas Ruff, and Ugo Rondinone, on display under the motto of “Some like it cool”.

Robert Capa (1913-1954), probably the best-known war photographer of the 20th century, famous for his documentation of the landing of the Allied Forces in Normandy from the perspective of the troops, shaped the aesthetics of war photography like no other. The collection, situated in Budapest and administered by the National Museum since 2008, is now being presented at art KARLSRUHE in direct combination with contemporary works of modern Hungarian photography.
