We work continuously on the improvement of workplace conditions for our people and their professional development

* Applies to brick manufacturing

For Wienerberger, sustainability is a dynamic and lasting commitment. It has been embedded in our management and culture for as long as we can remember. It’s an approach that will drive us into a greener future. As an international company, with an eco-pedigree that is global in scope and ambition, we are able to bring the very latest in worldwide sustainability innovation to bear in our local UK operations.

With every streamlined process, every cutting edge innovation and every green advancement, we want our customers to be the first to feel the benefit. It’s just one of the advantages of the scale, range and availability of our products, and why we take such care with every detail of their manufacture.

Combined with extensive research and development, our strong local manufacturing base, forged over a century, allows us to ensure that eco efficiency is at the very heart of our work.

7

Sustainability

Sustainability at the heart of product and innovation All of our products contribute to the energy efficiency of buildings by providing thermal mass to reduce energy requirements for both heating and cooling.

8

All products are manufactured to the same high standards, whether sourced from the UK or partner Wienerberger countries. On average brick transport accounts for only 4% of CO2 emissions* so, regardless of whether your bricks are being transported from within the UK or shipped from Europe we will find the most efficient and sustainable solution for you. All of our products achieve an A+ or A rating in the BRE Green Guide and all of our UK produced products are BES 6001 certified, qualifying them for extra points in the Code for Sustainable Homes.

We also take care to ensure that the sustainability credentials of our products benefit the entire build cycle, and not just the initial manufacturing stages. For example, during construction, our Porotherm clay block walling system uses approximately 95% less water than traditional masonry, allowing contractors a greener and more efficient method of building. * According to a 2010 report carried out by Ceram Research on behalf of the Brick Development Association

Sustainability

Sustainability at the heart of production Between 2011 and 2012, we have invested more than £6 million on improvements in production efficiency and energy performance in the UK.

At Wienerberger, we strive to use the minimum amount of energy in the manufacture of clay building products and to minimise the emissions of CO2 from the production process. Indeed, our emissions of CO2 from clay brick manufacture are 12.5% lower than the industry average.

Furthermore, not only were our recycled slates the first roofing products to achieve ‘Excellent’ status under BES 6001, the West Yorkshire plant where they are produced was the first roofing factory in the UK to be carbon neutral.

We have always led the industry in energy efficiency and our record of production sustainability is unrivalled. In 1996 we received the world’s first ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification for a brickworks at our Denton factory, while our Warnham site was the first clay building product manufacturing operation to achieve BES 6001 certification for Responsible Sourcing in 2009.
