Connecting people through music Wigmore Hall Learning gives people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities opportunities to take part in creative music making. We lead a wide range of innovative projects and events, both in the community and at Wigmore Hall, for children, families, schools, young people and adults. We are passionate about the impact music can have on our lives and on our society, and three core values lie at the heart of our programme: creativity, collaboration and equality. These are values which reflect the spirit of chamber music, and this inspires all that we do: making music together as an ensemble, with every voice heard and equally valued. for young people aged 15 – 19. The group meets once a month at Wigmore Hall to explore new and different kinds of music with professional musicians. Fresh from its year with us as our Royal Academy of Music/Wigmore Hall Fellowship Ensemble 2018/19, the Bloomsbury Quartet explores exciting works from the 19th and 20th centuries. Each of the members is passionate about connecting with people through music, and their performances have been described as ‘forward thinking with big ideas’ and ‘magnificently assured and stylish’.

The Miyabi Duo, a young and exciting guitar duo, has collaborated with several composers and here performs a programme of new and old works which pay homage to different cultures and ideas, including music inspired by Japan.

LISELOTTE ÖSTBLOM/RUPERT COX DUO Join this season’s Royal Academy of Music/Wigmore Hall Fellowship Ensemble featuring vocalist Liselotte Östblom and pianist Rupert Cox as they present a concert of music from the diverse tradition of jazz, ranging from the American songbook to Nina Simone and original music by the duo. Explore the song cycles of Benjamin Britten with composer Julian Philips, pianist Laura Roberts, guest speakers and student performers from Guildhall School of Music & Drama. ‘One of my chief aims,’ Britten wrote, ‘is to try to restore to the musical setting of the English Language a brilliance, freedom and vitality that have been curiously rare since the death of Purcell.’ He was courageous in expressing homosexual love through works such as the Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo. Later cycles show a preoccupation with sin and death (The Holy Sonnets of John Donne), the fragility of innocence in a corrupt world (Winter Words) and the disillusionment of middle age (Songs from the Chinese).

ANGELA HEWITT MASTERCLASS Born into a musical family and a pianist from her earliest years, Canadian Angela Hewitt has introduced countless listeners to the music of Bach while helping those already familiar with it to deepen their understanding. Bach remains the foundation of a career that ranges much more widely, while Hewitt’s masterclasses – both live and on the internet – have drawn a substantial following. Here she works with students from London music colleges.

MICHAEL COLLINS MASTERCLASS Giving a masterclass to students of the clarinet on which he is a supreme performer, Michael Collins received the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist of the Year Award in 2007 and was an Artist in Residence at Wigmore Hall in 2016; his ensemble London Winds celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2013. Today he works with students from London music colleges as part of his 2019 Wigmore Hall residency.

INTRODUCTION TO… BEETHOVEN’S PIANO SONATAS Beethoven’s 32 Piano Sonatas have been referred to as ‘The New Testament’ of music; Bach’s 48 Preludes and Fugues occupy the other space. A chronological exposure to these pieces takes the listener from the almost outrageously assertive and experimental early works (including the well-known ‘Pathétique’) through the expansive middle period (‘Waldstein’ and ‘Appassionata’) to the transcendental explorations of the ‘Hammerklavier’ and the last three sonatas. In his final sonata Op. 111, and especially in its second movement, Beethoven takes music to a place unvisited by any other musician. In this series, Roy Stratford gives an overview of the whole of this extraordinarily diverse series of works, perhaps the most significant body of music written for a single instrument.

SIR ANDRÁS SCHIFF LECTURE The great pianist’s profound expertise as an exponent of the Beethoven sonatas provides the basis as well as the necessary insight for his now almost legendary lectures on the composer’s music – in this instance the epochmaking three final sonatas, Op. 109, 110 and 111 (1820-22), a challenge to performers and audiences alike since they were first conceived. He will follow the lecture with a performance of the three sonatas at 7.30pm on Sunday 21 June.
