Simon Jay Price

WELCOME TO OUR 2012 SUMMER SEASON

The Prince Consort, Susan Graham, Mark Padmore (with Paul Lewis), Florian Boesch and Miah Persson, to name just a few. Young singers include Christiane Karg, whose debut is eagerly anticipated, and the baritone Henk Neven, already creating a good impression wherever he appears. Harpsichordist and conductor Christophe Rousset presents Monteverdi’s Zefiro Torna, a smilingly exuberant showpiece of Baroque musicianship written for two tenors and continuo, a 17th-century smash hit, and still a hit today.

We are very pleased that Maxim Vengerov will join us on 5 April for a rare recital, so note that date in your diary now! Another date sure to be in demand is 10 June when Jonas Kaufmann will appear in recital with pianist Helmut Deutsch. Watch out for the important final of the Wigmore Hall London International String Quartet Competition on 1 April. Last year Paul Lewis began a long-term Schubert cycle, comprising eight (repeated) programmes over three seasons. On 17 and 19 April he bases his programme around two magnificent examples of the last sonatas. On 22 April, Hilary Hahn, only just into her 30s, plays a programme of new miniatures by such contemporary composers as Nico Muhly and Paul Moravec, scattered alongside more traditional fare. Our season long Beethoven celebration continues in the company of the Belcea Quartet and Leonidas Kavakos with Emanuel Ax throughout the summer period. The six unaccompanied Bach cello suites will be played in two recitals by Colin Carr on 5 May, and the JACK Quartet performs a programme of Ives, Glass and Górecki on 27 May. A strong line-up of song recitals includes Joyce DiDonato, Iestyn Davies, Ian Bostridge, Magdalena Koz˘ená (with Mitsuko Uchida),

Other highlights from our Early Music and Baroque series include Stile Antico in a programme designed for Easter Day and the continuation of our special William Byrd Sacred Music Series on 17 May in the company of Andrew Carwood and The Cardinall’s Musick. The London Haydn Quartet – using gut strings, classical bows and period conscious scholarship – joins us for a weekend residency of Haydn Quartets and Mozart Quintets (with violist Steven Dann) on 2 and 3 June, whilst piano enthusiasts will be pleased to welcome back Richard Goode. Kirill Gerstein presents a wide ranging programme which includes the London première of Oliver Knussen’s Ophelia’s Last Dance. Louis Lortie joins us for a BBC lunchtime recital and we also welcome Angela Hewitt, Timothy Andres, Bertrand Chamayou and Steven Osborne (in Ravel). Large and enthusiastic audiences turned out for our Summer Late Night Series last season, and we have an eclectic mix of artists lined up for our 2012 late night celebrations, including pianist Gabriela Montero and the iconic Amjad Ali Khan with Britten Sinfonia. It is always impossible for me to mention more than a few of the concerts listed in the brochure, but I know you will choose your own favourites and I look forward to seeing you at the Hall. John Gilhooly Director

It wasn’t so long ago that accompanists were shadowy, unspotlit figures, barely recognised for what they brought to the collaborative chemistry of song recitals. Then came Gerald Moore, Geoffrey Parsons and a succession of supremely erudite practitioners whose understanding of the art demanded recognition. Among their number is unquestionably Roger Vignoles who curates this series – called ‘Perspectives’ in acknowledgement of his embracing vision and complete musicianship alongside a diversity of vocal partners. BOOKING FOR ALL EVENTS IN THIS SERIES IS NOW OPEN Monday 2 April 7.30 pm

Having performed in public from the age of five and risen through the following quarter-century to a place among the giants of the music world, Maxim Vengerov took a sabbatical from the violin in favour of conducting, teaching and humanitarian projects. When he returned to playing, at a concert in Brussels in 2011, he was met with overwhelming critical acclaim. In this concert, he brings together some of the greatest cornerstones of the repertoire in what promises to be a landmark in the London concert season. £30 £40 £45 £50

Here, though, she presents another aspect of her work: French mélodie from Fauré through to Poulenc (with romantic interlopers from elsewhere).

For its second appearance, the Tokyo String Quartet maintains its habit of world-class collaborations by joining the pianist Andreas Haefliger for Brahms’s one and only Piano Quintet: an epic score that caused the composer much trouble but stands among the great masterpieces of 19th-century chamber writing.

The span of Beethoven’s mature chamber music – from the Haydnesque piano trios Op. 1 to the awesome majesty of the late quartets – covers some three decades through which the genius of a ‘restless and profoundly ranging mind’ (as the critic Richard Capell called it) took on and transformed the ‘givens’ of classical discipline. Wigmore Hall’s ongoing series of the composer’s chamber and instrumental music explores that transformation; and it does so in the company of leading artists on the chamber music circuit. BACH CELLO SUITES The six unaccompanied cello suites by J S Bach have held a unique place in the baroque canon since they were reappraised by Pablo Casals in the 1930s. Until then, they were admired but with reservations (that Schumann ‘completed’ them with accompaniments says it all ). Today, they tend to be worshipped with the reverence shown to religious icons; and there’s no shortage of explanatory, often spiritual theories that interpreters read into their austere, mesmeric intimacy. Colin Carr will doubtless have his own views as he plays them over two concerts here at Wigmore Hall in what will surely prove a highlight of the season. Saturday 5 May 1.00 pm

IAN BOSTRIDGE

Benjamin Ealovega

Asked to curate a concert series at Wigmore Hall, Ian Bostridge seized on a memory from childhood – Hymns Ancient and Modern – and applied the name to an idea for programmes that would span the centuries, mix performing styles, and (as he says) ‘reflect upon the ways we colonise and remodel the past in our own image’. Planned with the broad sweep of a journey through time, the series started with a predominance of the old and concludes with a shift toward the new. But as Bostridge admits, it’s also an excuse for him to sing his choice of music with his choice of artists. Which is excuse enough.

French song isn’t the repertoire for which Ian Bostridge has been best-known, but it’s an abiding love. For this programme – which continues the ancient and modern theme of his Project, with baroque airs de cour in the first half, Fauré and Debussy in the second – he is joined by colleagues who turn a song recital into a concert party. £18 £25 £30 £35

Times were changing in the post-Napoleonic world. £12 £18 £24 £28 The presentation of the complete Beethoven String Quartet cycle by the Belcea Quartet has been made possible with a bequest from the late Mrs Kate Goetz, a long-standing and much missed member of the Wigmore Hall audience.

O SACRED BANQUET – WILLIAM BYRD AND THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI Programme to include BYRD Mass in Four Parts

A Catholic in a Protestant country, William Byrd trod a dangerous path through the religious politics of Tudor times but survived by composing public works for the new Church of England and discreet ones that reflect his personal beliefs. Last year The Cardinall’s Musick completed a project to record all the composer’s Latin settings with a release that won Gramophone’s Recording of the Year award. Since then the group has launched this Wigmore series which includes the 5-part Mass designed for very private use as it would have been unlawful. Future concerts in the series feature one of Britain’s other leading vocal consorts, Stile Antico.

MAGDALENA KOZ˘ENÁ MITSUKO UCHIDA However great the tendency towards equality between a singer and accompanist, the voice is bound to rule – except in those rare cases where the person at the piano is a star of equal magnitude, as you find in this unusual partnership between two world-class virtuosi. Neither Magdalena Koz˘ená nor Mitsuko Uchida need the slightest introduction. Together they can only promise double-insight into this programme of French and German songs – an idiomatically particular and personal programme that concludes with poems set by Messiaen in the 1930s for his first wife, known as Mi.

INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC Despite a remarkable cohesion, supported by centuries of tradition, Indian music cannot really be talked about as if it were a single entity. Such a vast and densely populated area – and Indian music covers the entire subcontinent, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and, to some extent, Nepal and Afghanistan – can be expected to have diversity in its music to match that of its languages, religions, ethnic groups and customs. So Indian music is not just the classical tradition but also the wealth of folk music and the familiar output of the film industry, which is much wider than just ‘Bollywood’. At the same time it is probably easier to define what is termed classical music in India than in the West, as it is based on clearly identifiable musical foundations: the melodic system of raga and the rhythmic system of tala. NEIL SORRELL introduces this remarkable tradition over four study sessions. Series ticket price £24 (not part of subscription scheme) Linked to the Amjad Ali Khan: Indian Music Series – concert tickets must be purchased separately.

HAYDN QUARTETS AND MOZART QUINTETS A string quartet named after one of the supreme quartet composers would be running risks unless its playing was exceptional – as the playing of this group undoubtedly is. Using gut strings, classical bows, and period-conscious scholarship, its recent recordings of Haydn on the Hyperion label have been described as ‘marvellous’ ( Goldberg Magazine ) and ‘superlative’ (The Strad ). In this weekend residency it examines all the quartets of the Opus 20 set known as the ‘Sun’ and generally considered a landmark in Haydn’s output, encompassing a grander scale and deeper expressivity than any of his earlier quartet writing. The set comes coupled with all six of Mozart’s string quintets, with the Canadian violist Steven Dann. Saturday 2 June 1.00 pm

A unique voice that combines Germanic eloquence and focus with the warmth of a convincing Latin sound, its virtuosity has captivated audiences across the world – not only on the opera stage but in the concert hall, with song recitals partnered by the most distinguished of accompanists, Helmut Deutsch. To Wigmore Hall these two great artists bring a French and German programme that includes some jewels from Liszt’s neglected vocal output and the cycle of five Rückert settings – wistful songs of love and death – by Mahler. £30 £40 £45 £50

BELCEA QUARTET BEETHOVEN String Quartet in A Op. 18 No. 5; String Quartet in B b Op. 130 with Grosse Fuge Op. 133 The Belcea first emerged as an ensemble with a striking pedigree, having been coached by both the Amadeus and the Alban Berg Quartets: a serious engagement with the grand tradition. Now firmly established in the front rank of their generation, the quartet has enjoyed a close association with Wigmore Hall for many years, and returns for this Beethoven programme featuring the late, great Opus 130 with the finale – a ‘grand fugue, as free as it is erudite’ according to the publisher – that Beethoven originally appended but then replaced after complaints that it was too long and too bizarre. SUNANDA SHARMA £12 £18 £24 £28 The presentation of the complete Beethoven String Quartet cycle by the Belcea Quartet has been made possible with a bequest from the late Mrs Kate Goetz, a long-standing and much missed member of the Wigmore Hall audience.

Few harpists have an international profile as distinguished, diverse or distinctive as that of Xavier de Maistre. Graduating through the ranks of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, his now flourishing solo career acknowledges no boundaries and takes in transcriptions of orchestral music that, in his hands, seem as full and rich as the original scoring. Hence the Smetana in this programme. £12 £18 £24 £28

Supporting Wigmore Hall Wigmore Hall’s size brings an unparalleled sense of intimacy to every performance and is loved by audiences and musicians alike. However, the limitation that this places on audience numbers means that ticket sales alone cannot meet all our costs. Additional support from individuals, companies and charitable foundations is vital in order to ensure that the world’s finest musicians, together with promising young performers, can continue to appear at Wigmore Hall. If you would like to support the Hall by becoming a Friend, or by sponsoring a concert or Learning event, please call 020 7258 8230 or email friends@wigmore-hall.org.uk for more information. The Wigmore Hall Trust is very grateful to the individuals and organisations listed below who have made an investment in our concert, learning and community programmes this season: HONORARY PATRONS Aubrey Adams Donald Kahn OBE Sir Ralph Kohn FRS and Lady Kohn Mr and Mrs Paul Morgan

SUNDAY TIMES CONCERT HALL OF THE YEAR

WIGMORE HALL

‘Wigmore Hall, that unregenerate refuge of high culture, is a continually stimulating place. The best concert hall in London, it approaches its 110th anniversary year as the natural home of chamber music. Nearly every night of the year, there’s something of note… it’s easy to start feeling that the Wigmore is London music.’ SUNDAY TIMES , DECEMBER 2010
