WELCOME TO OUR 110TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON
directions, attracting record audiences. I see this 110th anniversary season very much as a tribute to all of those who have helped us achieve so much over the past 10 years.
Welcome to Wigmore Hall’s 110th anniversary season. It has been a great pleasure and privilege for me to put the celebratory programme together – my fifth as Artistic Director and in my tenth year as a member of staff, as I joined the Hall (initially as Executive Director) in the run-up to our 2001 centenary celebrations. In the decade that has passed since then, with the vital help of our donors and patrons, we have been able to refurbish the building, acquire a long-term lease of 250 years, launch a critically acclaimed record label, Wigmore Hall Live, and expand our programming in both traditional and new
Our season-long celebrations reflect the great traditions of the Hall: presenting the cream of international artists and the leading composers of our time. We launch the season with a six-concert festival over five days, featuring Karita Mattila and Martin Katz, Angelika Kirchschlager, Ian Bostridge and Julius Drake and the Artemis, Elias and Tokyo String Quartets. The celebrations continue across the season and we are very proud to welcome Martha Argerich and Stephen Kovacevich, Daniel Barenboim, Matthias Goerne, Dame Mitsuko Uchida, Cecilia Bartoli, Diana Damrau, Alfred Brendel (for a lecture recital series), Susan Graham, long-standing Wigmore favourite András Schiff, Jonas Kaufmann in Die schöne Müllerin with Helmut Deutsch, Jordi Savall, Philippe Jaroussky, Thomas Hampson, Andreas Scholl, the Takács Quartet and Sandrine Piau, Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques in a programme of sacred songs. Two chamber music galas will be held on 31 May and 1 June 2011, the actual dates of the
Bechstein (now Wigmore) Hall inaugural concerts in 1901. Very appropriately, reflecting our commitment to both young artists and new music, the celebrations conclude on 30 July with the London debut of the superb New York-based Jack Quartet, whose energy and panache bowled me over when I first encountered them last year. In a major series to mark the bicentenary of Robert Schumann’s birth in 1810 we draw together a diverse range of artists to celebrate one of the most absorbing figures of German Romanticism. The series takes in the six major song-cycles (as well as many of his 250 or so other songs, with a special emphasis on songs composed during Schumann’s annus mirabilis 1840). We also feature the three string quartets and the three piano trios, plus other chamber music and major piano works. The series is brought to life by Julius Drake, Imogen Cooper, the Florestan Trio, the Vogler, Elias and Doric String Quartets (who perform one of Schumann’s quartets each in three of our autumn Sunday morning coffee concerts). Singers participating in the series include Mark Padmore, James Gilchrist, Christopher Maltman, Gerald Finley,
Ian Bostridge, Soile Isokoski, Wolfgang Holzmair and Kate Royal. Another major vocal project is with Malcolm Martineau and distinguished colleagues who take us on a 100 year journey through the German song repertoire, culminating in the period 1900 –1910, the Hall’s first decade. Clarinettist Michael Collins joins us for a threeconcert residency across the season, featuring him as both chamber musician and soloist in a wide variety of repertoire. To mark the 30th anniversary of the illustrious Hagen Quartet, we present a six-concert series over the season. I have invited the much-loved Steven Isserlis to return as Artist in Residence for a French series in which he draws together distinguished colleagues for a survey of the chamber music of Saint-Saëns, Fauré and Ravel. And we launch a four-concert guitar series spotlighting an instrument whose breathtaking versatility and range of musical expression thrive in the Hall’s intimate acoustic. We welcome John Williams, Manuel Barrueco (from Cuba), Álvaro Pierri (Uruguay) and Glasgow-born Galicia resident David Russell. Soloist, chamber musician and conductor Thomas Zehetmair, one of the most dynamic violinists around, joins us for a Bach recital,
and an appearance within his quartet, as well as a duo recital with violist Ruth Killius in music spanning from Mozart to Heinz Holliger. The distinguished Artemis Quartet continues with the Beethoven cycle which commenced last season, and we welcome back the Leopold String Trio with pianist Aleksandar Madzar (who greatly impressed our audience with his first evening solo recital last season) for a concert which includes Taneyev’s Piano Quartet in E Op. 20. A new quartet by Mark-Anthony Turnage, written for the Belcea Quartet and co-commissioned by Köln Philharmonie, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Vienna Konzerthaus and Wigmore Hall, will receive its world première on 7 December with the help of Fondation Hoffmann. We also co-commission several new works with the Britten Sinfonia, as part of their award-winning Lunchtime Series. Angela Hewitt returns for two concerts in which she pairs works by Bach with six new works commissioned by Wigmore Hall. Since 1991, Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes has been Artistic Director of the internationally renowned Risør Festival, alongside violist Lars Anders Tomter. Each year several of the world’s leading musicians convene there for an intensive period of rehearsals and performances, and, this year, the special atmosphere of these performances 2
comes to us in four concerts, also featuring the Festival’s string orchestra. These will be very memorable musical events taking place from 26 – 28 November. Other highlights of the autumn booking period include return visits from the world’s leading trumpet virtuoso Håkan Hardenberger, the Jerusalem Quartet, Ebène Quartet, and the Emerson String Quartet, who will have a trio of concerts. Christoph Prégardien and Andreas Staier join us on 1 December. The Early Opera Company soloists and chorus pack the Wigmore stage for Handel’s Messiah on 19 December, and the unconventional Patricia Petibon presents her own brand of song recital on 21 December, with a Christmas flavour. Later in the season we look forward to Mark Padmore and Paul Lewis in Schubert, and the London debut of pianist Marino Formenti, one of the most interesting interpreters of the present day, in a recital entitled ‘Kurtág’s Ghosts’. We also celebrate the music of Australian composer Brett Dean in the spring. As usual, there is far too much to mention. Please look through the brochure – we hope to enjoy our celebratory season in your company. John Gilhooly Director

ANNIVERSARY SEASON OPENING CELEBRATIONS Wigmore Hall marks its 110th anniversary with a season-long celebration reflecting its long tradition of presenting both the cream of international artists and leading composers of the day. Audiences over the years have witnessed performances by Eugène Ysaÿe, Ferruccio Busoni, Enrico Caruso, Thomas Beecham, Arthur Rubinstein, Elisabeth Schumann and the Czech Quartet – a roll call of starry artists, the calibre of which we continue to bring before concert-goers today. John Gilhooly launches the season with six concerts over five days, featuring the front-rank of today’s artists, and the celebrations continue across the season, with performances from Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, Cecilia Bartoli, Thomas Quasthoff, András Schiff, Diana Damrau, Susan Graham, Jonas Kaufmann, Thomas Hampson, Jordi Savall, the Takács Quartet, Les Talens Lyriques and many other artists who will join us in looking forward to the next 110 years of great music-making.

SCHUMANN BICENTENARY SERIES In a major series to mark the bicentenary of Robert Schumann’s birth in 1810, we draw together a diverse range of artists to celebrate one of the most absorbing figures of German Romanticism. Schumann’s creative spirit was uniquely influenced by his strong literary instincts, his love for his wife Clara and his precarious mental state – the sudden decline of which cut his career tragically short. Taking in the six major song-cycles (as well as a broad selection of his 250 or so other songs), the series includes a special focus on Schumann’s song output during the year 1840. Presenting the three string quartets (performed across the Coffee Concert series by the Elias, Vogler and Doric Quartets) and three piano trios, plus other chamber music and major piano works, the series is brought to life by major interpreters, including Julius Drake (who oversees Schumann’s Songs of 1840 for us), Imogen Cooper, Gerald Finley, Christopher Maltman, Kate Royal, Ian Bostridge and the Florestan Trio.

Beethoven enjoyed the patronage of several Russian aristocrats, including Count Razumovsky, who commissioned three of his best-known string quartets (Op. 59). Beethoven was one of the principal models to Russian composers writing chamber music in the 19th century, and his influence was equally important to Russia’s greatest 20th-century composer, Shostakovich. This series combines some of Beethoven’s finest chamber works with music from the rich Russian tradition, including both familiar masterpieces and lesser known gems. Some illustrious singers bring their talents to the renowned expertise of the Nash Ensemble players in a varied and illuminating series. Sunday 26 September 11.30 am

GUITAR SERIES As Wigmore Hall celebrates its 110th anniversary, we launch a new Guitar Series, spotlighting an instrument whose breathtaking versatility and range of musical expression thrive in the Hall’s intimate acoustic. The series begins with perhaps the world’s leading exponent of the instrument, John Williams, and continues through the season with Manuel Barrueco from Cuba, Álvaro Pierri (Uruguay) and Glasgow-born, Galicia-resident David Russell. Although best known for bringing the harmonies, rhythms and festivities of Spain to vivid life, the guitar is equally suited to the music of the Baroque and can boast a huge range of repertoire, plus arrangements spanning from Bach to the Beatles.

DECADE BY DECADE – 100 YEARS OF GERMAN SONG 1810 – 1910 The 110th anniversary of Wigmore Hall offers an ideal opportunity to celebrate the Hall’s unequalled role as an international converging point for the world’s great singers. This new series, overseen by Malcolm Martineau and Dr Susan Youens, featuring singers chosen by Malcolm Martineau together with John Gilhooly, explores the rich repertoire of German song, decade by decade, spanning from 1810 until 1910, thereby overlapping with the Hall’s first decade. This headline series evokes the glories of Wigmore Hall’s past – which has brought performances by artists such as Peter Pears, Alfred Deller, Elly Ameling, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Brigitte Fassbaender – in featuring the leading recitalists of today, among them Diana Damrau, Susan Graham, Angelika Kirchschlager and Christopher Maltman.

SCHUMANN SONG Tied to Gerald Finley’s recital on the 29 October, this Wigmore Study Group explores the songs of Robert Schumann and in particular his Heine Liederkreis Op. 24. Dating from Schumann’s extraordinary year of song (1840), this cycle marks a high point in the development of Schumann’s song style: the subtle interweaving of voice and piano, a highly sophisticated response to text and an exploration of shifting emotional textures. Hosted by composer JULIAN PHILIPS, the Study Group will offer three approaches: a song masterclass, a performance-analysis and an investigation of the historical context in which this cycle was completed. Series ticket price £53 including three study sessions and a ticket for the evening concert on 29 October

MICHAEL COLLINS – CHAMBER MUSICIAN AND SOLOIST Since becoming a finalist aged 16 in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition over 30 years ago, Michael Collins has built an international career as clarinettist – and, increasingly, conductor – that has recently reached another peak with his new role as Principal Conductor of the City of London Sinfonia. This season Wigmore Hall has invited Collins to take up a three-concert residency, featuring him as chamber musician and soloist in a wide range of repertoire spanning from Mozart to the present day. ‘Collins’ dexterity dazzled, fingers leaping, tossing off the decorative flourishes, impossibly nimble … But there was never a hint of the humdrum or mechanical’ The Times

I doubt that Schubert’s cycle [Die schöne Müllerin], purely in vocal terms, has been more thrillingly sung on disc since Fritz Wunderlich recorded it for Deutsche Grammophon’ Hugh Canning, Sunday Times With an impressive technique at the service of a questioning mind, Jonas Kaufmann is keenly sought after by opera companies around the world. For his first song-cycle at Wigmore Hall he chooses Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin, following his new recording with Helmut Deutsch. As Kaufmann sees the emotional journey of the cycle’s young protagonist, ‘the fellow who sets off on his wanderings is in the first songs bursting with energy and self-confidence. ALFRED BRENDEL LECTURE RECITALS One of the 20th century’s great pianists, Alfred Brendel may have retired from concert-giving, but he returns to Wigmore Hall to give a series of three lecture recitals for its 110th anniversary season. His unique combination of wit, eloquence and musical experience has for many years been evident not only in his superlative performances, but in his deftly argued essays and his humorous, sometimes irreverent, poems. With this series Alfred Brendel returns before the public, presenting his latest thoughts, in both words and music. ‘When you look at how [Schubert] develops the motifs in the late sonatas, you can see the direction in which he’s going. But like Mahler, he doesn’t give you a solid edifice, or a clear distance to the goal towards which he is steering’ Alfred Brendel Saturday 13 November 2.00 pm

Throughout its 110-year history, the Hall has witnessed the premières of new works by Elgar, Finzi, Stravinsky, Britten and Tippett, among others, and this tradition continues in this series, which features new works by Brett Dean, Elena Kats-Chernin, Robin Holloway, Kurt Schwertsik, Dominic Muldowney and Yehudi Wyner. Hewitt’s Bach selection presents church Chorales (arranged both by herself and others) as well as works designed for the domestic setting.
‘The paramount quality of Angela Hewitt’s piano playing is the joy it communicates. Underpinning it there is incontrovertible intellectual rigour; and there are great reserves of wisdom and technical finesse’ Daily Telegraph Photo by Peter Hundert

Since 1991 Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes has been Co-Artistic Director, with violist Lars Anders Tomter, of the internationally renowned chamber music festival based in the small fishing town of Risør on the southeastern coast of Norway. Each year some of the world’s leading musicians converge there for an intensive period of rehearsals and performances, and this year the special atmosphere of these performances comes to Wigmore Hall in a series of four concerts also featuring the festival’s resident string orchestra. Among the soloists are names familiar to Wigmore Hall audiences, including Martin Fröst, Henning Kraggerud and Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman, a prizewinner of the Wigmore Hall Song Competition in 2001.

ARTEMIS QUARTET BEETHOVEN CYCLE Spanning his entire composing career, Beethoven’s string quartets trace the full range of his development, beginning with his early efforts in the six Op. 18 quartets to mould the form as inherited from Haydn. Five years later came the three ‘Razumovsky’ quartets, Op. 59, beginning a period of expansion that marked his ‘heroic’ middle period. With the late quartets Beethoven, by now completely deaf, produced his greatest and most philosophical outpourings, turning to the string quartet as a laboratory for his innovative experiments in form, harmony and expression. The Berlin-based Artemis Quartet is currently engaged in a landmark project, performing the cycle across 10 European cities as well as in the USA. Tuesday 14 September 7.30 pm

This season Zehetmair also became an Artistic Partner of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in Minneapolis. John Gilhooly invited Zehetmair to have a special residency and this three-concert series opens a window on his range of talents, beginning with a solo Bach recital and continuing next year – when he appears within his quartet, as well as in a duo recital (with his wife, violist Ruth Killius), in music spanning from Mozart to Heinz Holliger. BRAD MEHLDAU AT WIGMORE HALL Jazz pianist Brad Mehldau is one of the most exciting musicians in his field today, touring and recording extensively with great success. Having been invited by John Gilhooly to curate Wigmore Hall’s Jazz Series from September 2009, Brad Mehldau brought his inimitable style to bear in a series of concerts over the 2009/10 season. This included a solo performance, appearances with Joshua Redman and the Brad Mehldau Trio, and a programme of both jazz and classical music with the mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, including the UK première of new work co-commissioned by Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall and KölnMusik. Brad Mehldau continues his curatorship this year, inviting friends from across the musical spectrum to participate in a variety of duo performances which will explore the limits of improvisatory and experimental contemporary composition, in addition to more conventional work in the jazz tradition. Italian vocalist Diana Torto joins renowned British pianist John Taylor on 6 May; whilst German reeds player Klaus Gesing joins forces with the ubiquitous British pianist Gwilym Simcock on 2 June. In the autumn, Brad Mehldau himself forms two all-American partnerships, with versatile mandolin player Chris Thile on 16 September, and acclaimed singer Joe Henry on 2 December, concluding what promises to be an extraordinary and thought-provoking series of collaborations. This brings Brad’s tenure as Jazz Series Curator to a close.

THE REST OF THE SEASON – A PREVIEW
Quartets, as well as the outstanding young Pacifica Quartet who made a firm impression here in Elliott Carter’s music last season.
The preview of our spring and summer series, on the following pages, outlines the continuation of our 110th birthday celebrations. Chamber music highlights include a new work for Michael Collins, London Winds and the Endellion String Quartet by Thea Musgrave, premièred here on 27 January, as well as a celebration of the music of Australian composer Brett Dean on 19 February. As always, we celebrate Schubert’s birthday on 31 January, and this year we welcome Alina Ibragimova, Alban Gerhardt and Steven Osborne for Schubert’s piano trios. The Fauré Quartet joins us for Mozart’s piano quartets, and we welcome back the Artemis, Belcea, Hagen and Zehetmair
83
Song Series highlights include return visits from Christine Brewer and Magdalena Koz˘ená, and we welcome back the excellent French baritone Stéphane Degout. Juliane Banse, together with violinist András Keller, perform Kurtág’s Kafka Fragments on 18 February, whilst András Schiff and Robert Holl join us for Winterreise. We continue our exploration of 100 years of German song with Malcolm Martineau, which culminates in a survey of songs from 1900 –1910, the Hall’s first decade. Two celebratory galas will be held on 31 May and 1 June 2011, the actual dates that the Hall opened in 1901. Daniel Barenboim, who made his debut here at the age of 15, joins us on 15 June for his much awaited return, after several decades. Please look through the brochure for yourself and pick out your own highlights. We look forward to your company as the season progresses. John Gilhooly Director

Supporting Wigmore Hall Wigmore Hall’s size brings an unparalleled sense of intimacy to every performance and is loved by audiences and musicians alike. However, the limitation that this places on audience numbers means that ticket sales alone cannot meet all our costs. Additional support from individuals, companies and charitable foundations is vital in order to ensure that the world’s finest musicians, together with promising young performers, continue to appear at Wigmore Hall. If you would like to support the Hall by becoming a Friend, or by sponsoring a concert or Learning event, please call 020 7258 8230 or email friends@wigmore-hall.org.uk for more information. The Wigmore Hall Trust is very grateful to the individuals and organisations listed below who have made an investment in our concert, learning and community programmes this season: HONORARY PATRONS Aubrey Adams Donald Kahn OBE Sir Ralph Kohn FRS and Lady Kohn Mr and Mrs Paul Morgan
