In addition, local conservation groups conduct operations aimed at educating locals about the importance of protecting these trees as well as replanting and improving their sustainability. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-governmental organization which ensures that forests are being sustainably managed. It was recently discovered that over 80% of the Argan forests in Morocco were being harvested illegally, which prompted the Moroccan government to change its policies by implementing fines that were expected to help preserve these trees.
