Assignment Scenario You have been commissioned by the ‘Documentary Channel’ to make a documentary within your local area. The client has not specified a certain subject matter, but you will need to research and create your own original documentary topic; whether this is historical, topical or cultural. Before producing pre-production materials you must firstly develop both a primary and secondary research log about your preferred topic in order to fully realise your idea. Some popular documentaries made in previous years involved; ‘Hull in the WW2 Blitz’, ‘Hulls Local Bands’, ‘Drug Abuse in Hull’, etc. It is imperative that you include a range of interviews that reflect varied attitudes and opinions about the topic you have chosen – your documentary must take an unbiased look at the topic you are examining and therefore must contain as many approaches to the subject matter as possible. You must study and analyze internet and book based materials to discover information that will aid the development of the various discussion revolving around your documentaries subject matter.

Your Pre-Production Materials should include a variety of necessary documentation including: Treatment, script, shooting script, shooting schedule, storyboards, location survey, budget plan, etc. See Pre-production material templates for further details. You will also need to detail minutes of meetings if you are working a team. Task Scenario: Film and edit your Finished Documentary (5-10 mins) using the Sony Vegas editing software on the computers.

Evidence: Your Finished Documentary (5-10 mins) should reflect the relevant codes and conventions of a factual television programme with recorded interview for an identified purpose. It should also contain relevant SFX and soundtrack / sound effects, as well as proper application of relevant unbiased interview skills.

You can decide to either write a 500 word written evaluation or a reflective technical commentary recorded as an audio voice over companion piece to your film. Evidence: Your written evaluation or your reflective audio commentary should reflect the technical competency that you (and your group) feel you have applied to your project. It should also reflect your films visual style and content ideas whilst working within the factual programme format.
