INTRODUCTION
Momentum Keeps Academy Thriving
Momentum is defined as the impetus gained by a moving object. It has both magnitude and direction. While I do not consider myself a scientist (as my high school transcript will attest), this concept of momentum has been very much on my mind as I reflect on our most recent year and what lies ahead for the Academy.
As Sir Isaac Newton documented in his Second Law with the tangible impact of momentum, a look around campus reveals many examples of the momentum’s impact on the Academy. The recent addition of the Athenaeum and the iLab are most notable, but there are also smaller items like new carpet throughout Rich Hall, updated common spaces in Smith Hall and Wallace Blake, improvements to Lak Dining Hall and a complete renovation of the Jane McNamara Kelly Fitness Center.
In my mind, however, the impact of momentum on the Academy is less about the tangible and more about a feeling. It is a sense of energy that permeates on campus and bubbles up in conversations with parents, students and alumni. I believe this is due in part to the understanding that the Academy has emerged from the pandemic stronger than ever and ready to move forward. We are in this position because of our outstanding leadership, the tremendous dedication from our faculty and staff, and the incredible generosity of our donors.
Newton states in his second law of motion “ … the rate of change of momentum of a body is equal in both magnitude and direction of the force imposed on it.” Reflected in these pages are the names and stories of those whose generosity is providing the force currently acting on the Academy; those who are determined to not only maintain this momentum, but to build on it; and in doing so, ensure that our magnitude increases while our direction remains steadfast.
Thank you all for being the impetus that continues to propel us forward. May your example inspire others to join in and be a force on the momentum of Wilbraham & Monson Academy.

THE GIVING REPORT 2021-2022 2
BOARD MESSAGE We Celebrate Every Contribution
When I flip to the back of this issue of The Giving Report and look at the donor lists, I see far more than just columns of names. I see classmates, friends and even family. People I spoke with just the other day, and people I have not spoken to in years but remember fondly. I see family legacies and family firsts. Some have lived long and seen much, while others are just getting started.
There are more than 750 names in this report, and every one represents a decision to make a financial gift to WMA; keeping the Academy’s mission and traditions strong, and a WMA education attainable, for new generations of students. Each person listed has their own unique experience of WMA which drives their generosity, and although we would like to share each of those stories in print that is, of course, rather impractical.
So, as you read the wonderful articles about supporters like Jim LaCrosse ’50W, Joe Martin ’82, the Gallivans, the Zebrowskis and the late Richard Goldman, know that we celebrate every contribution, because every contribution comes from a place of love and connection to our school.
If your name is one of these 750, you have my heartfelt appreciation along with that of the entire Board of Trustees. You are keeping WMA strong during extraordinary times and positioning us for a bright future ahead.
If you are not listed, I urge you to step off the sidelines and join us. Your own experience of WMA is special, and it was empowered by those who came before you. Every alumnus, parent and friend of WMA can make an impact. WMA means something to each of us. Honor that. Keep it strong.
Sincerely,
Scott B. Jacobs ’75 Chair, Board of Trustees

FEATURE DONOR PROFILE
James ‘Jim’ LaCrosse ’50W
Wilbraham & Monson Academy’s Largest Single Donor to Date
By Elena Sheppard
F
or nearly 50 years after graduating from Wilbraham Academy, James “Jim” LaCrosse ’50W was relatively out of touch with his alma mater. That is until 1999, when preparations for his class’s 50th reunion kicked into gear and LaCrosse decided to get involved.
“I had given $100,000 to Harvard, and I got invited to a dean’s lunch with 100 other people,” LaCrosse said while referencing his business school and remembering a catalyst for his return to Wilbraham & Monson Academy. “And I said, ‘What do they really care about my $100,000?’ Then I went to Wilbraham and found out the endowment was not $45 billion, it was $8 million. I said, ‘I should focus my attention on Wilbraham.’”
One of the first ways LaCrosse focused his attention on the Academy was by pouring his energy and philanthropy into his 50th reunion.
He began by giving $50,000 - the Academy's largest 50th reunion gift given at that time - and rallying his classmates back to campus to celebrate the milestone year.
“My 50th reunion was the year 2000,” LaCrosse said by video chat from his home in Indianapolis, Indiana. “We had a dinner for our guys. (The Academy) said we had the biggest attendance, 20 or 30 people, which was a big deal.”
By the Academy’s count, LaCrosse’s enthusiasm was such that it set the standard for future 50th reunions. It also led to LaCrosse joining its Board of Trustees.
In the two decades since, LaCrosse has not only maintained his commitment to Wilbraham & Monson, he has embarked upon a rocket-like trajectory of giving.
In 2012, he donated $2.7 million, the largest single cash gift in the Academy’s history. He also gives $150,000 annually to the Atlas Fund — the largest individual annual donation the school receives.
The culmination of Lacrosse’s giving is a recently promised estate gift which will be at least $7.5 million and perhaps more, depending on the size of a particular trust. Cumulatively these contributions make LaCrosse the Academy’s largest single donor ever — a fact made even more impressive considering that these donations all came 50 years or more after LaCrosse’s Wilbraham graduation.
It was 1946 when LaCrosse first came to Wilbraham.
“My father died in 1945, he was a second lieutenant in World War I,” LaCrosse said. “My mother was left with $10,000 veteran’s insurance and not much else. My mother made a living by buying old houses and renovating and selling them. We lived in a house in Granby (Massachusetts), we lived in a house in South Hadley, and then she bought this house in Wilbraham and renovated it.”
That house, which is now known as the Old Meeting House (on Main Street, across from Shenkman House/Office of Advancement), is where LaCrosse lived for three years with his mother and brother Thomas ’49W. LaCrosse attended Wilbraham as a day student before joining as a boarder for his fourth year.
“I would dash out the back door, cross the road and I’d be at Wilbraham Academy,” he said of life in the Meeting House. “Still running. Late for class.”
LaCrosse, who turned 90 in November, said his time at Wilbraham helped shape him and prepare him for the rigors of college and life after.

WILBRAHAM ACADEMY CREST
GI BILL
“The four years at Wilbraham were very important to me,” he said. “They really helped form who I am.”
Who LaCrosse is today is one of the most active philanthropists in the Indianapolis area, with an impressive collection of accolades and a remarkable investment portfolio. He is also the Director and Chairman/CEO/CFO of National Wine & Spirits, as well as a former vice president at a health care company, former manager of a plastics division, former finance supervisor at Ford Motor Company and former security analyst at the Bank of New York. The latter is where he met his wife, Patricia, who was working as an investment counselor.
Lacrosse has been recognized as one of the 75 Most Influential People in Indianapolis and received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Lifetime Achievement award, as well as the Distinguished Alumni Award at his alma mater Wesleyan University.
LaCrosse is quick to note that to achieve the success he has in his life, it required a true understanding of hard work.
“I learned hard work from my mother and father,” he said. “We grew up on a farm and my brother and I had to get up at 5 in the morning, feed the chickens, feed the pigs, feed the other animals, get ready for school and get on the school bus at 7:30 in the morning. And we did that every day.”
That was prior to Wilbraham though, and by the time LaCrosse attended the Academy his father had passed away. He remembers fondly the paternal influence that many of the teachers at Wilbraham had on him.
“There were two or three teachers who helped me from a paternal standpoint,” LaCrosse said. “Doc Flocken who was head of the math department, and Buff Newell and Roger Lincoln.”
At Wilbraham, LaCrosse’s main focus was academics.
“I was somewhat of a lab rat,” he said. “Whenever I could, I would hang around the physics and the chemistry labs helping the professors with experiments or doing experiments of my own.
“My mother got me an algebra book with all kinds of algebra problems in it, and it was my favorite book. I’d walk around, and whenever I could I would sit down and solve algebra problems. Not something a 15-year-old usually did - of course we didn’t have girls there so that wasn’t a distraction.”
He also recalls being a quiet participant in the classroom.
“I stuttered terribly, and so my oral participation in class was virtually zero,” he said. “I finally figured out while in the Army, that if I had a cocktail or two, I didn’t stutter.”
LaCrosse graduated from Wilbraham in 1950, just days before the beginning of the Korean War.
“I was only 17 and I begged my mother to let me join. She was smarter than I was and said, ‘Forget it. You’re accepted at Wesleyan, you go to school,’” he said, adding that between his mother’s help and his own savings he really only had money to comfortably attend college for two years.

LaCrosse decided he would attend school for those two years and then enlist, which is exactly what he did. But while attending basic training, the war ended before he was deployed.
“My group in basic training was the first group that did not go to Korea,” he said.
LaCrosse was ultimately stationed on both Governors Island (in New York) and in Germany. “My life was spared but I was a Korean veteran and got the Korean GI Bill,” he said. LaCrosse used the funds from the bill to finish college and later to attend Harvard Business School, which he called a professional “door opener.”
Of course, along the road were unexpected and unpredictable turns. Like in 1955 when he was scouted on the streets of Manhattan to be a model - which he did for a time.
“It was the first time I realized I wasn’t a nerd,” he said with a laugh.
Both LaCrosse’s career and family life took off in true earnest during his time at Harvard and after graduation. LaCrosse and Patricia were married in 1959, and initially it was she who kept them financially in the black.
A graduate with high honors from the University of Michigan with a degree in Economics (and the only woman in her major), Patricia worked while LaCrosse was in school. This allowed him to graduate debt free.
LaCrosse spent the next decade building his impressive résumé while he and Patricia welcomed four children to their family (they now have nine grandchildren). When LaCrosse took a job as the VP of Finance at Biodynamics in Indianapolis, life for the family went in a new direction.
“It was a publicly traded company, and I secured a number of stock options,’’ he said. “I bought them and sold them for a fair amount of money and retired at 39.”
Not long after, he started looking for a company to buy and landed his sights on a small liquor wholesaler in Indianapolis, National Wine & Spirits.
“It was a time when companies were consolidating,” LaCrosse said. “There were 22 wholesalers here in Indiana when I bought it in 1973. I owned half of it, my partners owned the other half. By 1988 we had consolidated down to two wholesalers in Indiana, which still is the situation. We ended up going into Illinois, Michigan and Kentucky, and throughout the whole process I made 25 acquisitions to build the company.”
Patricia was an integral part of that journey.
“She was an important part of our business development, not only raising our family but running what we call Wine Tour Inc.,” LaCrosse said, mentioning a component of the company that would bring retailers to various wine countries to educate them about wine. “Because of a lot of her activity educating retailers, we became the dominant wine supplier in this state which led to a lot of good things.”
The success they achieved has given the LaCrosses the ability to give back in ways that would not have otherwise been possible.

“It’s allowed me to do lots of things for Wilbraham and for Wesleyan that I otherwise would not have been able to do,” he said.
LaCrosse also has a holding company and uses those profits to invest and make charitable contributions. Patricia is heavily involved in the Indianapolis arts scene, where she’s been on the boards of the Indianapolis Symphony and the Indianapolis Museum of Art - to whom she has also given many pieces for their collection.
“We support a lot of things here in Indiana,” he said. “We’re blessed with that ability.”
Of all his many professional achievements, what LaCrosse said he’s most proud of is building National Wine & Spirits into a company of nearly 1,600 employees who enjoy working there.
“It’s almost bringing tears to my eyes,” he said. “I tell you it’s not only that we pay well but I don’t think we’ve ever fired anybody at our company. It’s an amazing business.”
As for why he’s chosen to give so much of his wealth to Wilbraham, what it comes down to for LaCrosse is a belief in the Academy’s vision for the future.
“I saw with the leadership they had, that they were moving ahead,” he said, specifically calling out the work of Head of School Brian Easler, former Head of School Rodney LaBrecque and Chairman of the Board Scott Jacobs ’75. “I had the ability to provide money somewhere. And Wilbraham, for me, was an obvious choice.”
Today, despite being the Academy’s single largest donor, LaCrosse is rather humble about that
“I just think it’s a good school and should get the support of the alumni,” he said of Wilbraham & Monson. “And I’m just able to do more than most.”

THE IMMEDIATE IMPACT FUND Celebrating Scott B.Jacobs ’75
On the evening of Oct. 29, 2021, as part of the 50th Reunion Celebration dinner, Scott Jacobs ’75 was honored for his 20 years of service on the Board of Trustees (18 of those as Chair). In recognition of his leadership, the Athletic Center Board Room was formally named in his honor.
Mr. Jacobs hates surprises, but his fellow trustees and Head of School Brian P. Easler chose to forget that little detail and surprised Mr. Jacobs with the proclamation and the attendance of his daughters for the special occasion.
But there was more. Recognizing that many projects across campus had been paused when resources were diverted to the Academy’s successful response to the COVID-19 pandemic, current and former Trustees joined together and raised $1.2 million in honor of Mr. Jacobs. They created the Immediate Impact Fund, an unrestricted current-use fund that effectively doubled the year's annual giving total. This allowed WMA to dust off plans and complete numerous upgrades in key areas far earlier than anticipated.
It is a powerful example of how WMA uses annual giving: to fund projects and programs that continually improve the student experience.

PROFILE ON GIVING
Richard ‘Dick’ P. Goldman
A Big Impact at a ‘Little Jewel of a School’
By Sean Valentine Director of Stewardship & Donor Relations
Richard “Dick” P. Goldman first set foot on the Wilbraham Academy campus in June 1959. It was hot, and he had traveled from his army barracks in Fort Bragg, N.C., in search of a job. A friend from college had suggested the train trip to this small New England boarding school. There was a rule, then, that allowed those with teaching jobs to end their military draft service early.
That friend, Michael Shepperd, was connected to Headmaster Gray Mattern and had recently joined the Academy faculty using this loophole. Hearing of Mr. Goldman’s draft, Mr. Shepperd approached Mr. Mattern and an invitation to campus was sent.
“It was not a typical job interview,” Mr. Goldman said in 1997. “Gray interviewed me … and we touched on subjects that seemingly had nothing to do with my potential as a teacher. Frankly I was nervous and didn’t think I acquitted myself very well.”
Mr. Mattern offered Mr. Goldman a position in the English department starting that fall. By the time Mr. Goldman left 13 years later, he had variously been a faculty member, Chair of the English Department, Director of Development, Director of Studies, Editor of the alumni magazine, Chair of the Scholarship Committee and Assistant Headmaster. Then he served 20 years as an Academy Trustee.
Not bad, considering he was certain he had flubbed his interview.
Born in New York in 1935, Mr. Goldman was a graduate of Manhattan’s P.S. 9, Indian Mountain School and The Hotchkiss School. He attended Yale, graduating magna cum laude in 1956. Before being drafted, he had pursued a career in radio broadcasting before he landed at this small New England prep school.
Fellow faculty member Richard Smith recalled Mr. Goldman’s arrival on campus prior to the school year.
“He showed up and then promptly disappeared,’’ Mr. Smith said. “We couldn’t figure where he’d got to. Then we discovered he’d been misinformed as to his classes and hadn’t read the right books. So he was holed up in his room reading them!”
Once settled, Mr. Goldman threw himself into his new role and life on campus.
“Wibraham was an exciting place for a faculty member,” he wrote. “Nothing was staid or immovably locked into place. It was a little jewel of a school. Camelot.”
It became obvious to everyone that he was a natural.
“We had to teach two classes of just plain grammar,” Mr. Shepperd said. “Dick took to his task and somehow made it inspiring for his students.’’
Mr. Goldman was funny, a helpful trait for a boarding school teacher. “He was good at mimicking the students,” Mr. Smith said. “I heard him down the hall once, imitating a kid who apparently hadn’t done well on a test: ‘Oh Mr. Goldman, I swear I studied!’”
Mr. Goldman’s enthusiasm in the classroom, his even temperament as Senior Master on Rich 2, humor, and demand for excellence quickly won him the respect and admiration of his students.
“He figured out how to connect with them, and he soon had them learning from his example,’’ Mr. Shepperd said.
Mr. Smith agreed: “He was a superb teacher. Some of the boys practically worshipped him.”
2021-2022
Within a few years, Mr. Goldman had so impressed Mr. Mattern that he began steering Mr. Goldman into administrative roles. Linda Griffin was a member of the Development Office when Mr. Goldman was named Development Director. Currently a member of the Board of Trustees, she recalled, “Dick always handled his supervisory roles thoughtfully and kindly.”
In 1964, Mr. Mattern elevated Mr. Goldman to the role of Assistant Headmaster in order to free himself to focus more on long-range planning. In a press release at the time, Mr. Goldman said he was “excited at the opportunities that lay ahead.”
However, things were not rosy for Wilbraham Academy. Declining enrollment and financial issues beset Wilbraham, as they did at a great many other boarding schools of the era.
Mr. Goldman worked hand-in-glove with Mr. Mattern to keep Wilbraham Academy successful, but by 1970 it was clear that the Academy would not endure on its own. Thus the merger with Monson Academy (which was facing similar struggles) to create WMA was announced. Now Mr. Goldman had a hand in combining the two schools.
“His loyalty to the school ensured that he did all he could to make the transition smooth,” Mr. Shepperd said.
It also became clear to Mr. Goldman that it was time to move on himself. Mr. Mattern had hired him, mentored him and now was gone, having stepped down during the transition for health reasons. Mr. Goldman bore no ill will toward Arthur Tuttle, who had been Head at Monson and then WMA. But it wasn’t the same. So in the spring of 1972, he left Wilbraham to take an administrative position at Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, where he spent the next 30 years.
Fast forward to 1988.
Mr. Goldman was now firmly established at GFS and had become a respected speaker and trainer. He had recently gained national recognition for his book “A Profession at Risk,” in which he studied the issue of salaries and retention at independent schools.
Fred Watts had been named Interim Head of School at WMA, and it was a critical time for the Academy. Having worked with Mr. Goldman for years, Watts urged him to accept an invitation to join the WMA Board of Trustees. Mr. Goldman accepted.
For the next 20 years, he was a fixture on the Board. He served as facilitator for the long-range planning committee and helped facilitate Mr. Mattern’s return to campus as a committee advisor. He played a key role in the early phase of Richard Malley's tenure as Head, was a member of the Head of School Search Committee that hired Rodney LaBrecque and was Chair of the Finance and Investment Committee for 17 years. He retired from the Board in 2005.
“His work as a member of the Board of Trustees helped guide the then-merged Wilbraham & Monson Academy to a more secure position, while assuring that the Academy remained committed to its key values,” Mrs. Griffin said.
Throughout his life, Mr. Goldman remained connected to WMA on a personal level, attending reunions, hosting alumni and regularly visiting with former colleagues and friends.
“Bill, my late husband, and I would meet Dick and (his wife) Claire in Manhattan once a year,” Mrs. Griffin said. “We saw intense dramatic productions and then sat to critique them.”
Mr. Smith saw the Goldmans in Philadelphia after he had moved on from WMA to William Penn Charter School. Mr. Shepperd, after ending up back home in Texas, said: “We’d go back and forth whenever the Giants and Cowboys played. The technology changed but we always stayed in touch.”
Mr. Goldman passed away in the fall of 2021, leaving behind a legacy of excellence that impacted the lives of countless students and colleagues, and having made his mark on the independent school community as a whole. He has been deeply missed.

PROFILE ON GIVING The Gallivan Family
By Kyle O’Brien Director of Alumni Relations
As a student in the public school system, Evan Gallivan ’96 was in search of a different learning environment. He had been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, and it became clear he needed smaller classrooms and a different teaching style that catered to his learning preferences. His parents, Richard and Janice Gallivan, had known of Wilbraham & Monson Academy, as they were residents of Hampden, Massachusetts, at the time. Evan had his reservations about changing schools; however, upon visiting WMA, his mother said he “kept turning back to me and saying ‘is this really a classroom?’ and I’d say ‘Yeah, honey, it's a classroom.’ ‘Are you sure it’s a classroom?’” Evan was committed after that and attended WMA from Grade 8 on.
Evan is Executive Director of Campaign Planning and Strategy at Rhode Island School of Design, where he oversees the special events, donor relations and communications teams. He credits his career success to WMA, and specifically to former faculty members Todd Wilson, who worked in the Alumni Office, and Josh Merrow, the Alumni Program Director from 1996 - 1998.
Evan learned about development from Mr. Wilson and said, “He was a great mentor and very formative person early on in my time at Wilbraham.”
Mr. Wilson had encouraged Evan to do his community service hours for the Office of Advancement. Evan continued this and began a newly elected volunteer role as Class Agent during his senior year, when Mr. Merrow took over the office.
After graduating from Wheaton College, Evan returned to WMA as a student teacher. Once he realized that career path was not for him, he reconnected with Mr. Merrow, who was then working in advancement at Harvard Business School. Through that connection, Evan landed a job at Harvard Business School, which launched his career into advancement.
Whitney Gallivan ’00, Evan's sister, also attended the Academy. She was a competitive athlete at a young age and wanted to compete at the varsity level in Grade 8. However, that wasn’t possible in the local school systems, so she elected to join her brother at Wilbraham & Monson Academy. Initially, Whitney was planning to attend only for Grade 8 and then return to her local high school, but after a short time on campus, she never looked back.
“Anytime I was on the field or court, (I have) absolutely very fond memories,” Whitney said.
Whitney likens her time at WMA to that of a college student, rather than a high school student. The level of autonomy offered to the students was eye opening and invigorating for her as a Grade 8 student.
“I couldn’t imagine going back to a brick building after that,” Whitney said.
Whitney is proud of all she accomplished at WMA and believes she was “the best version of myself when I was there for my high school years.”
Whitney uses that foundation today in her career as a partner and managing director at Boston Realty Advisors, where she is the top retail real estate broker in Boston, completing on average 50 deals a year.
Janice shares fond memories of being a parent cheering Whitney on at soccer games, while volunteering and providing refreshments and baked goods, and watching Evan shine in the theater program.

‘WMA … has so much meaning for me and my family’
Richard said: “I think WMA gave our children a huge foundation, a real solid foundation, from which to grow. And they certainly excelled in both of their fields, and I don’t know if they would have done that in public school. It gave them self confidence and a better learning experience.”
Janice and Richard continue to be strong supporters of WMA, and the Gallivans are aligned in their love of WMA and in their philanthropic support.
“I give because I want Wilbraham to thrive and continue to be a successful institution,’’ Evan said. “I am very proud of the school Wilbraham has become, and I want to see it continue to flourish. I want to keep on seeing it win and succeed.
“If you're an alumnus - and you believe in the experience you had as a student and you want future generations to have that experience or better - you should give.”
Whitney agreed, saying: “I give back to WMA because it has so much meaning for me and my family. If you look back at your time at WMA fondly, or are appreciative of how you grew and what you learned, whatever small amount, show that support.“

The Zebrowski Family
‘You will get back much more than what you donate’
By Kyle O’Brien Director of Alumni Relations
Many summers ago, John and Regina Zebrowski, residents of Ludlow, Massachusetts, decided to send their young daughter Gabrielle to Beech Tree summer camp at Wilbraham & Monson Academy.
“I remember the first day she came home from Beech Tree and said, ‘Mom, that place is so huge, I could never go to school there!’” Regina said.
However, time has a funny way of changing our plans. Years later as a Grade 5 student, Gabi returned home once again; this time from her private Catholic school in Ludlow and asked to tour other schools in the area.
John and Regina agreed and toured WMA, thinking that Gabi was planning ahead for high school. Gabi had other plans, though. After shadowing a student for a day, she proudly announced to her parents that she wanted to attend WMA, starting in Grade 6. The Zebrowskis trusted their daughter’s intuition and have never looked back.
The Zebrowskis became part of the WMA community almost immediately. In fact, one of John’s fondest memories is the first day of school and Matriculation, specifically each of the new students signing the book.
“It was just something special,” Regina said. “You have to take this commitment seriously. And I think that WMA truly aligns with our personal goals as a family, so we knew right then that she was in the right place.”
That feeling of community and alignment of familial goals only continued to grow and strengthen over the years, with John and Regina being involved in the Parent Leadership Council and with Regina as the former President of the Parents Association.
“It’s a great school, but it’s also a great community and family,’’ John said.
Regina agreed, noting: “We set our kids up to have the best possible future they can and try to nurture them as much as we can at home, and we just want them to go out and find something that they are passionate about that they can grow and learn from. WMA is that community.”
Community is central in Gabi’s reflection of her time at the Academy.
“WMA was such a special place to me, not only because I was there for seven years, but also the relationships I made and the people I met,’’ Gabi said. “I made friendships that I know will be lifelong, and I'm really thankful that WMA gave me that.”
Wanting to make sure others had the same life changing experience she did, Gabi decided to be a Gold Key tour guide.
“I loved meeting the prospective students and their families and showing and telling them why I loved WMA and our community so much,’’ she said. “I wanted to pass my experience to them so that they would choose to come and make their own special memories in our community.”
It is that sense of community, and how it affects the lives of so many children, that inspires the Zebrowskis to support the Academy through volunteerism and financial contributions. Because they were a direct part of the community for so many years, they want to ensure WMA’s longevity and prosperity.

More importantly, they want current and future students to have the best possible education they can. Financial contributions allow that to happen, especially when considering how those gifts affect the implementation of the Academy’s Master Plan, something both John and Regina are very familiar with because of their time on the Parent Leadership Council.
To the Zebrowskis, their financial contributions are more than just giving back. It’s an investment and, in their minds, a responsibility.
“You will get back much more than what you donate,’’ Regina said. “The impact is trifold on your student – mentors, lifelong friendships, life skills – not to mention the foundation to be successful as they pursue their next degree. You are going to see the maturity level rise and, in turn, what the future can hold for them with the education they receive at WMA.
“I feel like it's part of our responsibility … We chose this school for a reason, it’s not only about dropping your child off and paying for them to go to school; but it’s also supporting the students, the staff and the brick-and-mortar infrastructure they depend on for the future.”
Wilbraham & Monson Academy is fortunate to have the support of the Zebrowskis. Their philanthropy and volunteerism past, present and future will have an undeniable impact on the Academy.

Josef ‘Joe’ E. Martin '82
‘WMA was my little Heaven on Earth’
By Sean Valentine Director of Stewardship & Donor Relations
Josef “Joe” E. Martin '82 has made a financial contribution to WMA every year for the last two decades and made provisions for the Academy in his estate.
When asked what drives his support for the Academy, Mr. Martin said: “The school has a special place in my heart. It was the best four years of my life (aside from the years I’ve now spent with my wife), and I’d like for it to be that way for others. I was also part of the Academy’s work-study program and had my first school loan at 14. That made my success at WMA all the more important for me, and I give back to support students who come from the same background as I did.”
Mr. Martin grew up in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, New York. His parents were German immigrants who instilled independence into him and his brother from a young age.
“My mother gave me money and sent me down the street for my own haircuts at 7,” Mr. Martin said. “I learned later she followed me, but still. I was on a plane by myself at age 11 to visit relatives in Germany. My family didn’t follow until a few days later.”
Public school proved to not be the best fit for Mr. Martin. He recalled his father sitting him down and saying, “If you want to be a carpenter, it’ll be public school; but if you want more, we will get you into private school.”
Mr. Martin toured Deerfield Academy, Choate Rosemary Hall and others, but felt something special about WMA.
“Mr. Fred Watts gave me a tour of the school while I was applying,’’ Mr. Martin said. “His presentation was the reason I chose WMA.’’
Mr. Martin was a bit late in the application process, which meant when he arrived on campus in the fall of 1978 he was not in the freshman dorm. Instead he found himself roommates with another late applicant on the first floor of Rich Hall, where Gale Giles was a dorm parent. This proved advantageous.
“Giles came up to us and said, ‘Look you two. I’m tired of doing two room checks every night, so if you behave you can have Senior Privileges,’" Mr. Martin said. “So we were out playing Frisbee until well past dark! It was give respect to get respect.”
When home life for Mr. Martin became tough, WMA became something of an oasis: a place where, over the next four years, he put his independent nature to good use.
“I was good at sports, but not a jock,’’ Mr. Martin said. “Good at math, but not a brainiac. I could float between all the cliques and be right at home. Had friends in ’81 through ’83. I considered that an advantage.”
Mr. Martin played soccer for Coach Gary Cook, first on the second string his junior year and then as a starting defenseman his senior year. He was on the lacrosse team that defeated Longmeadow (High School) for the first time in five years.
“Mr. Giles called me ‘Heinrich’ in class once because I butchered a Spanish reading and the name stuck,” Mr. Martin said. “My lacrosse line of middies were called "Heinrich's Middies" after that.”
He lived in Wallace Blake Hall, the “hotel on the hill,” which was relatively new and an all-boys dorm at the time. Favorite classes included English with Watts and mathematics with Alan Sherman.
THE GIVING REPORT 2021-2022 16
“I argued with Sherman once, over two points on a test. I’d gotten a 98,’’ Mr. Martin said. “When he signed my yearbook he wrote: ‘Joe, Joe he’s our man! If he can’t do calculus no one can! Here’s your two points …’”
At Commencement, Mr. Martin was inducted into the Cum Laude Society and received the Markell & Monson Class of 1898 Award, which is given to that senior who has made the greatest contribution through leadership, character and courtesy.
Mr. Martin matriculated to Amherst College, but was forced to transfer when his scholarship no longer kept pace with the rising tuition.
“That is my one big regret, not finishing at Amherst,’’ he said. “I hated to leave.”
He enrolled at Long Island University, where he repeated a bunch of classes and eventually studied economics. After graduation, Mr. Martin considered a career on Wall Street, but during the crash of 1987 thought “what else can I do with a math-based career?”
Moving on to grad school, Queens College was inexpensive and had one of the best mathematics programs in the country. A connection via a former Amherst professor helped secure his entry, and he studied applied mathematics and received his M.A. in 1992.
Mr. Martin accepted a job offer from ISO Insurance Services and spent the next 25 years there. He moved from data management to regulatory reporting and finally automobile risk reporting, picking up an impressive number of industry accreditations. Mr. Martin married his wife, Cindy, in 2014, retired from ISO in 2017, and now spends time traveling the country with Cindy and their granddaughter on epic road trips in their RV.
Asked to reflect on WMA during his 40th Reunion year, Mr. Martin said: “We had international students during my time, even a bunch from Iran before the crisis. I can see how much the school emphasizes the importance of that experience through exposure to other peoples and cultures. My experience seems just a nacient start to that. The entrepreneurship program and the new lab space, the opportunities now are just incredible. The Academy was a wonderful place to learn with the guidance of some very supportive teachers. I developed a love of sports and learning that stays with me today. I want young people to have the opportunity to experience what I did."
WMA is stronger because of Mr. Martin’s generosity. We are deeply grateful for his years of support, and we are honored to recognize him in our Heritage Society.
