Lend A Green Thumb Appeal For More ‘Emergency Foster Carers’ Over Christmas As ‘Let’s Get Back Together’ Fostering Event A Huge Success To Help Tackle Every day 123 foster families all the children a muchClimate Change from across Blackburn needed boost. Thanks As National Tree Week begins, Wyre Council is continuing their work in creating woodlands and hedgerows as part of a commitment to plant 25,000 trees in Wyre. As part of this, volunteers are being invited to help lend a hand in planting trees this winter. Wyre Council declared a climate emergency in July 2019 and have since been working to reduce the council’s emissions by at least 78% by 2035. To help achieve this, the council is working with the Woodland Trust to create 10 hectares of native woodland and hedgerows across its open spaces by 2025. The planting will begin during National Tree Week, with the first events taking place at the Civic Centre in Poulton. Councillor Simon Bridge, Portfolio Holder for Parks and Open Spaces, commented, “Trees offer huge benefits for mankind, wildlife and the environment. From filtering out air pollution, improving our wellbeing, providing habitat and foraging opportunities for birds, bats and other wildlife, to helping mitigate against flooding. “This is just one step we’re taking in tackling climate change but we’re pleased of the progress we’ve made so far.” The tree planting sessions will be held at the playing fields behind the Civic Centre in Poulton on Tuesday 30 November between 9.30am – 12 noon and 1pm – 2:30pm and also on Thursday 2 December between 9.30am – 12 noon and 1pm – 2.30pm. with Darwen are giving 246 fostered children and young people a loving, secure and stable home and this commitment has been ongoing throughout the pandemic. This is why a ‘thank you celebration’ event for children and their carers was held recently. The ‘Let’s Get Back Together’ day was organised by the Foster Carers Association and held at the TIPIS at Riley Green where foster carers were celebrated for all the work that they do. The children had many activities to enjoy after being unable to take part in group activities for so long. A foster child who attended said: It was absolutely phenomenal, definitely a day to remember. The Foster carers that attended the event were also very appreciative, Peter, who fosters for Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: I would like to thank Children’s Services for funding such a much needed event for all our children of all ages, I spent all afternoon watching all of their smiling faces, even the babies there. A massive thank you to all of the Foster Carers Association for all their time put in to organising this. We even managed to have the weather. Great work to all the carers for making the effort to give

again. Claire another foster carer who attended the event echoed the gratitude: It was a fab day, well organised event, looking forward to future ones. Kiddies big and small loved it. A big well done to the organisers. Cllr Julie Gunn, Executive Member for Children’s Services, said: The Foster Carers Association (FCA) arranged the most wonderful event at the Tipis and it was fantastic to see so many of our children and young people having fun, tackling the assault course, face painting, enjoying the circus skills, the climbing wall and the delicious food too. The weather was great, it really was a perfect day for everyone to spend time together, the care, support of our carers is clear for all to see, we know how lucky we are in BwD to have them, and that is why we were keen to support the celebration. My thanks go to everyone who helped to organise the day, the FCA and Children’s Services, Young People’s Services and special thanks too to the Tipis for hosting our party at such a beautiful venue. The ‘Lets Foster’ team have also recently launched a Health and Wellbeing

fortnight. The aim was to make sure foster carers in BwD are provided with the right support with a focus on how we look after each other and ourselves. The fostering service wants to ensure that foster carers are given every opportunity to maintain and flourish with positive health and wellbeing for themselves. In December, the FCA will be hosting a Christmas Party at The Legends Lounge at Blackburn Rovers. This will be open to all Blackburn with Darwen foster carers and families, as well as our fostering staff. Focus for recruitment over the Christmas Period will be for Emergency Foster Carers. Special carers who could take a child or young person at a moment’s notice. This could be after school for one night or over a weekend until arrangements have

been made for a more permanent solution. Emergency foster carers normally have other jobs but are able to help us help a child or young person when they need them most. Jayne Ivory, Director of Children’s Services added: Foster carers accomplish incredible things every day, even in the face of a global crisis that has affected every one of us and impacted all aspects of our society. Despite the practical and emotional challenges that the pandemic is bringing, foster carers continue to provide day-today support, love and stability to children and young people who can’t live with their birth families. They support children and young people’s education, health, and social wellbeing, and help to maintain the children’s relationship with the people who are important to them. Blackburn with Darwen urgently needs more foster carers to make sure fostered children can live with the right foster carer for them. Short break or emergency foster care also allows foster carers to build their experience and confidence so if you’ve ever considered fostering please get in touch. Could You Provide A Foster Home To Keep Two Brothers And Their Sister Together A new campaign has been launched this week to encourage more local Lancashire residents to consider fostering siblings. Lancashire County Council has launched the appeal due to an increase of brother and sister groups across the region needing loving families to provide a stable environment which will allow the children to stay together. One such sibling group are Harry, Kai and their little sister Scarlet who are currently living in emergency foster care. They have been placed

away from home due to their parents' drug use, physical and domestic abuse, and inability to provide a safe home environment. There were sadly no foster carers able to take all three siblings meaning they are currently in separate homes. The children have a close bond which is evident when they meet each other, and it is in their best interests to stay together, especially after the upheaval that they have already faced. Being able to keep their ties with each other will help them to be able to thrive in the future. "There are many families and

individuals considering taking the first step into fostering", said CC Cosima Towneley, Cabinet Member for Children & Family Services. "We want to encourage and help them take these first steps as the benefits for both families, individuals and the child or children involved are immense." Cllr Towneley continued: "We are always looking to grow our Foster Family community especially where a sibling group can be kept together in a long-term home. The difficulties experienced by these children in their early years make the maintaining

of the sibling bond alongside long term stability of prime importance. We want anyone considering taking the plunge to contact our Fostering Team who will be able to guide them through the process." The county council is appealing to a range of people to consider fostering. The change in their circumstances caused by the coronavirus situation could leave many well placed to provide a loving home for these children. The council is also urging anyone who has fostered with them in the past to think about coming forward to offer the benefit of their experience. Becoming a foster carer could also be an ideal opportunity for anyone who is looking for a new challenge. To find out more about becoming a foster carer visit www.lancashire.gov.uk/fostering or call our friendly team on 0300 123 6723.

Ribble Valley Success As High Court Quashes Planning Appeal Decision The High Court has quashed a Planning Inspector’s decision to allow a developer to build 39 homes in Ribble Valley. In Ribble Valley Borough Council v the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and Oakmere Homes, His Honour Judge Bird ruled that the council’s application of local planning policy had been correct. The council applied to the High Court to quash a decision by the Planning Inspectorate to allow an appeal by Oakmere Homes to build the houses at the junction of Chatburn Road and Pimlico Link Road in Clitheroe. The council argued that the inspector had erred in law when making his decision on the basis that he had misinterpreted local planning policy set out in its Core Strategy. The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government said he agreed with the council and did not participate in the hearing. Ribble Valley Borough Council’s Core Strategy aims to protect open countryside from development. And the successful delivery and defence of the Core Strategy was fundamental

in the council’s decision to challenge the inspector’s decision. In his ruling, His Honour Judge Bird quashed the decision by planning inspector Graham Robbie, saying: “The inspector’s decision is firmly rooted in a misunderstanding of the policy and so must be quashed.” Nicola Hopkins, Ribble Valley Borough

At the beginning of the lock down we, like everyone else, were worried about our

business. So we decided to go online with our antique and collectables business.

Council’s director of economic development and planning, said: “Our Core Strategy sets out what can be built in the borough and where, shaping infrastructure investments and determining future development. “It seeks to direct housing to sustainable locations and protect the borough’s open countryside, which is a top priority.

“This ruling confirms the correct application of our Core Strategy and that development in the countryside will only be allowed when justified by local need.” Ribble Valley Borough Council leader Stephen Atkinson said: “Our officers work hard to ensure the right type of development takes place in the right locations

across the borough and we welcome this judgment, which has supported and protected our Core Strategy. Judge Bird found in favour of Ribble Valley Borough Council and awarded costs against the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities

Vital Support In Place For Households In Need This Winter Rochdale Borough Council has put in place a support programme to help thousands of vulnerable residents and families with essentials this winter. As a key part of its support offer, the council is using £2.3 million from the government's Household Support Fund to provide:• Targeted support for low income households, through provision of free school meals for eligible families over the Christmas holiday, February half-term and Easter holiday • Delivery of a household fund, where people can access shopping and fuel vouchers • Targeted support for older residents in receipt of council tax support • A package of housing energy support The council will also be working with partners across the borough, including the voluntary sector, community groups and charities, to ensure those most in need receive targeted assistance. Older residents who qualify for council tax support have already been contacted by the

council and will receive their first payment by Friday 17 December 2021, benefitting over 7,000 households. Additionally, the borough's successful community warehouse, which has been in place throughout the pandemic, will continue to provide food parcels, cleaning products, nappies, baby food and other essential supplies for families and older people. Councillors have ensured food vouchers will continue to be provided for lower income families over

Christmas, February halfterm and Easter. Families will be contacted directly and it will be targeted at over 12,500 children in the borough eligible for free school meals or identified through children's services. In addition, the Holiday Activity Fund will be running over Christmas, providing activities and food for children on free school meals. Councillor Neil Emmott, leader of the council, said: "Throughout the pandemic we have been committed to

supporting and protecting our most vulnerable residents. This wide-ranging and targeted assistance builds on our innovative work over the last 20 months. It's a real partnership effort, utilising our strong community networks, to deliver for those residents who most need our help. I am proud of what we have delivered for our residents, but there is still a lot to do which is reflected in our decision to reach out even further." He added: "As a responsible and progressive council, it's

important we help to ensure that no resident should go hungry, is unable to heat their house, or feed their family this winter. Almost 28,000 Universal Credit claimants in our borough have recently lost £20 per week. That is money to put food on the table and heat their homes. This package goes someway to offset the hardship that cut will cause, especially as the cost of food, fuel and other essentials is increasing. We have a proud history in our borough of ensuring the vulnerable households and

older residents are protected. I would urge anyone who could benefit from this winter help to get in touch as soon as possible." Households who are in particular need are being encouraged to get in touch, to see what assistance could be available for them. • View available winter support on: www.rochdale. gov.uk/wintersupport • You can also phone the council's hotline number on 01706 923685, 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, for help and further information.

COVID’s Still Here: Mayor Opens Meeting With Rapid Test Reminder The Mayor of Bolton led by example last night, by confirming a negative COVID test before formally opening a meeting of full council. In line with the latest guidance, Cllr Thomas took a rapid lateral flow test ahead of the meeting and reminded others to do the same if spending time in crowded and enclosed spaces. With COVID restrictions lifted, more people are attending the workplace, visiting shops, enjoying large events, or meeting with groups of friends. Last week Bolton Council launched the COVID’s Still Here campaign, highlighting the simple steps we can all take to protect each other while enjoying these day-today activities. What is a rapid lateral flow test? One in three people with COVID-19 do not have any symptoms but can still pass the virus on to others, particularly in enclosed spaces or crowded areas. Everyone is urged to take a

rapid test before mixing with others, either socially or for work, to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. Tests are quick and easy to use with the results displayed in just 30 minutes. Anyone testing positive should protect others by self-isolating and booking a PCR test to confirm the result. Keep safe this winter Viruses of all types spread much more easily when the weather is colder, and as more people mix over the festive period there is a risk that COVID rates could rise. As well as putting vulnerable people at risk and placing pressure on the NHS, higher rates can cause significant disruption by forcing schools or businesses to close. We can all do our bit by following the simple steps set out in the COVID’s Still Here Campaign: • Opening windows and keeping rooms well ventilated when meeting indoors • Washing our hands regularly and using hand

sanitiser when we go out • Taking regular rapid tests, particularly before mixing with others • Getting fully vaccinated, including the booster dose and have a flu jab • Wearing a mask in shared spaces and busy areas The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Linda Thomas, said: “Before last night’s meeting I took a rapid COVID test, one of the simple steps we can all take as part of our day-to-day routines. “If you are meeting with colleagues, family or friends then a rapid test is a quick and easy way to make sure you are not spreading the virus to others. “By following this advice, we can protect the NHS, the Bolton economy and each other this winter.”

Gritters Ready To Keep The Borough Moving As Temperatures Drop

Teams at Rochdale Borough Council are ready to hit the road to tackle ice, sleet, flooding and snow this winter. The gritting programme started in October 2021 and 8 gritters are on standby to help keep the borough's main roads safe. Over 4,000 tonnes of salt are ready for spreading when temperatures drop, at the council depot on Princess Street. The council monitors forecasts and road conditions, ready to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when needed through to the middle of April 2022. Over 200 miles of roads are salted during one round of complete gritting – over 50 per cent of the borough's total road network and there are more than 20 drivers on standby. Staff receive regular weather forecasts with information about road surface temperatures and the likelihood of ice. This is monitored alongside a computerised ice detection system, cameras and weather stations at Blackstone Edge, Middleton Road and Edenfield Road in Norden which record road and air temperatures as well as showing live roadside images. The council also

uses automatic gritting technology, which spreads exactly the amount of grit required. Residents are being advised to make sure they are ready to deal with icy and wet conditions, as well as the simple things they can do to keep warm, healthy and safe during winter. This includes making sure vehicles are ready for severe weather, that you have the right equipment to stay safe and know how to drive in extreme weather conditions. Even when roads and footways are gritted, it is still possible for ice to form so drivers and pedestrians should always take care. You can help the council's winter maintenance teams by making sure you leave enough room for gritters to get past when you park up. ‘Working in the toughest of conditions’ Anyone who lives or has a business in an area which is prone to flooding can register with the Environment Agency for advance warnings of any flood danger. Councillor Daniel Meredith, cabinet member for highways said the council was well prepared to tackle the winter weather as always, and will do all they can to minimise disruption: “We really do have fantastic

people protecting the borough this winter and I’d like to thank them for all the work they’ll be doing to keep things moving and to keep us safe. With unpredictable weather and high rural terrain to contend with they are often working in the toughest of conditions. That said, we still all need to do our bit by taking extra care in icy conditions and allowing extra time for journeys. Gritting is carried out to prevent the formation of ice on the road however we can’t guarantee every treated surface will be free of ice so it’s important to make sure you drive to the road conditions and please slow down. If conditions are poor, and journeys are not essential, consider waiting until the weather gets better.” Councillor Meredith added that it’s also important to look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours: “There’s also the wider implications of bad weather in local communities and we actively encourage residents to be good neighbours looking out for more vulnerable residents. An offer to help could make all the difference to someone who cannot get out on their own, so please do consider how you can help with things like essential shopping or picking

up prescriptions.” When temperatures drop and snow or ice is forecast, gritting teams carry out precautionary gritting and snow clearing, with ploughs fitted to all vehicles when necessary. The council also has over 500 salt bins around the borough in areas where particularly difficult conditions exist. • View severe weather updates and how to get ready for winter • You can also get live daily updates on Twitter, search #RochdaleGrit

Blues Festival Plans Confirmed In Colne For 2022 Colne Town Council agrees their final decision for the future of the Blues Festival in Colne. Earlier in the year the organisers reviewed the Blues Festival in line with all the services they provide. They agreed that the Blues Festival needed to be changed to become more financially viable and sustainable while still having a music festival on August Bank Holiday for Colne. There was opposition to this decision. Following many carefully considered meetings, talks and negotiations, last night, Tuesday 16th November, Colne Town Council made a final decision about the future of the Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival. At last night’s meeting it was proposed that ;1) Colne Town Council enter into an agreement with Peter Barton to provide artists (at his risk) for the Municipal Theatre (including the Mini Muni), Hippodrome and Little Theatre. The agreement to be based on the Town Council receiving 10% of the total Ticket sales.

2) Colne Blues Society be invited to provide the Fringe Programme for the 2022 Blues Festival. 3) Negotiations continue with the Colne Blues Society with a view to them programming the whole festival in 2023 onward, subject to Colne Blues Society becoming a fully constituted organisation. 4) The Town Clerk write to Pendle Borough Council to ask that they offer support to the Festival by covering the costs of any extra street cleansing required during the Festival and indemnifying Pendle Leisure Trust for any losses they may incur. Cllr. Mary Thomas, Chairman of Colne Town Council said “The Councillors are happy to have reached a final agreement on the future of this cherished festival. Colne deserves a festival which supports the local community and attracts visitors to the area each summer. As this proposal has been chosen, this means the Council can help facilitate an event in the summer of 2022 which hopes to ‘tick all of the boxes’ and bring the town

to life for all to enjoy. There will be some changes to the event organisation, which it is hoped will improve the festival’s financial security while continuing to bring a well-managed blues festival to Colne. We also hope to work alongside the Colne Blues Society on the fringe aspects of the festival, including the Roadhouse

venues.” Further planning is now underway, with news of ticket prices, venues and line ups expected to be announced in the forthcoming weeks. Details will be added to the festival’s website and social media. Colne Town Council has organised and managed the event since 2017, when they

took over the mantle from Pendle Leisure Trust. The Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival has brought wonderful blues music – in its myriad of forms – to Colne for over 30 years. The event is not only one of Europe’s ultimate contemporary blues festivals, but also a one-of-a-kind and much-loved festival

for people of the local area. The 2019 festival, which attracted over 25,000 people to Colne, won the UK Blues Festival of The Year Award. The 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. https://www.bluesfestival. co.uk https://colnetowncouncil.org. uk/

New Warnings Following Outbreaks Of Avian Flu The Government has brought in new UK-wide measures to protect poultry and captive birds against Avian Flu – and people are being warned not to touch or pick up birds. There are currently no reported cases in Blackburn with Darwen but cases have been reported in the Preston and Ribble Valley areas, Manchester and across Yorkshire. Poultry keepers must take action now to protect their flocks from bird flu this winter following a number of confirmed cases across the country in recent weeks. New bird-housing measures, which will come into force on Monday 29 November, mean that it will be a legal requirement for all bird keepers across the UK to keep their birds indoors and to follow strict biosecurity measures in order to limit the spread of the disease, and help to eradicate it. Wild birds migrating to the UK from mainland Europe during the winter months can carry the disease and this can lead to cases in poultry and other captive birds.

Poultry keepers must now do the following: • House or net all poultry and captive birds to keep them separate from wild birds • Cleanse and disinfect clothing, footwear, equipment and vehicles before and after contact with poultry and captive birds – if practical, use disposable protective clothing • Reduce the movement of people, vehicles or equipment to and from areas where poultry and captive birds are kept, to minimise contamination from manure, slurry and other products, and use effective vermin control • Thoroughly cleanse and disinfect housing on a continuous basis • Keep fresh disinfectant at the right concentration at all farm and poultry housing entry and exit points • Minimise direct and indirect contact between poultry and captive birds and wild birds, including making sure all feed and water is not accessible to wild birds. Government Chief Veterinary Officers are encouraging bird keepers to use the next few

days to prepare for the new housing measures, including taking steps to safeguard animal welfare, consult their vet and put up additional housing where necessary. Members of the public are also being asked not to approach or touch poultry or other birds that you find or come across, on no account. Public health advice remains that the risk to human health from the virus is low and food standards bodies advise

that avian influenzas pose a very low food safety risk for UK consumers. There is no impact on the consumption of properly cooked poultry products including eggs. Dominic Harrison, Blackburn with Darwen’s Director of Public Health, said: I would like to reassure people that the risk of humans catching Avian Flu is low, but I would also strongly advise people to avoid contact with all birds,

especially wild birds and poultry. This virus spreads through having close contact with an infected bird, whether it is alive or dead, so avoiding this is important. We are a nation of animal lovers and, for some of us, if we see a bird that is clearly unwell or suffering, our instinct will be to help it. However, we are urging everyone not to do that – on no account should any of us be touching dead birds

and wildfowl. If you know of any birds that appear unwell, please report them to the Defra Rural Services Helpline on 03000 200 301. If you find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, you should report them to the Defra helpline – call 03459 33 55 77 and select option 7 – and arrangements will be made to remove them swiftly.

New Planning Application Submitted For Animate Cinema And Leisure Complex A planning application for the city owned multi-million pound cinema and leisure complex, Animate, has been lodged by Preston City Council. Since the scheme was first proposed, plans have progressed to improve the previously consented proposals and respond to the current leisure market trends. The planning application includes an 8 screen cinema; 16 lane bowling alley; competitive social unit (suitable for a range of uses); 5 family restaurants; a street food hub; public realm improvements; 164 space car park; a Changing Places' facility and associated servicing arrangements. The Animate scheme aims to bring growth and development to the city centre, create a quality leisure destination to bring families back into Preston and make the city the 'place to be'. As well as bringing in over £7million of extra economic activity every year while creating 140 full time equivalent jobs. This planning application

has now been submitted to Preston City Council's Planning Department. A period of consultation will be open to allow the public the opportunity to express their views on the proposed development. The application will be considered and decided by the Planning Committee, which is made up of elected councillors. Subject to achieving planning permission work is programmed to begin on site in Summer 2022. Councillor Matthew Brown, Leader of Preston City Council, said: "This planning application is the vital next step in the Animate scheme, which aims to bring key investment and jobs to benefit the people of Preston, as well as stimulating investment in the surrounding area. It is a central part of our ambitions for a more democratic local economy with the asset retained in city ownership once developed. The scheme aims to enhance the leisure offer within the city centre, build resiliency as we recover from Covid

and make Preston a key destination to live, work and visit. Now the application has been submitted, it will be considered by the planning committee who will make their decision over the coming weeks." Andrew Dewhurst, director of Maple Grove Developments, commented: "This joint planning application, submitted by Preston City Council and Maple Grove Developments aims to create a leading leisure destination within the city centre. We've worked closely with the City Council and Leach Rhodes Walker Architects in developing the design and scheme content, to ensure the Animate project will meet the goal of creating a thriving, sustainable city centre offer for everyone to enjoy."

Share Your Views On Chadderton Neighbourhood Planning Proposals Residents are invited to comment on community proposals to designate a neighbourhood area and neighbourhood forum for Chadderton. A residents’ group, The New Chadderton Partnership, has submitted the application. The proposed neighbourhood area covers the three Chadderton wards Chadderton North, Chadderton Central and Chadderton South. If approved, a neighbourhood area and forum designation, will allow The New Chadderton Partnership to begin to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan for the neighbourhood area of Chadderton or Neighbourhood Development Order for a specific part of the neighbourhood area. SLADE Come To MANCHESTER – O2 Ritz On Sunday 19th December 2021!

SLADE - Without doubt one of the most exciting bands to come out of Great Britain in the past 50 years. With their unique blend of perfect pop rock'n'roll, outrageous flamboyance and pure fun, and no less than 23 Top-20 singles of which 6 were No-1 smash hits...plus 6 smash albums, Slade have become a firm favourite in the hearts of pop fans all over the world. SLADE'S chart career has spanned 6 decades and their enduring songs “Far Far Away”, "Cum On Feel The Noize" and "Coz I Luv You" are still featured today in TV commercials for some of the Worlds biggest companies. SLADE first hit the road in 1966, touring throughout Great Britain and Europe and becoming a regular concert attraction. Joining forces with the former Animals bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience manager, Chas Chandler, Slade achieved their first chart hit in May 1971 with the Bobby Marchan song "Get Down And Get With It" then, released in October of the same year "Coz I Luv You" was the bands first No-1 and a huge hit across Europe. Throughout the seventies, Slade became one of Europe's biggest bands, touring and recording continually and making regular trips to America, Japan and other parts of the

world. Slade's catalogue of hits are synonymous with the era:- "Take Me Bak 'Ome", "Mama We'er All Crazee Now", "Cum On Feel The Noize", "Gudbye T' Jane", along with the many others provided a soundtrack to the Glam Generation and are still today, heavily featured on any retrospective of the time. At the beginning of the eighties, Slade were invited to appear at the Reading Rock Festival, a massive annual event which attracted over 100,000 people. They literally stole the show, giving some of the worlds biggest rock bands a serious run for their money whilst kindling new interest from a whole new audience. As a result, the band signed a new record deal and unleashed the anthem "We'll Bring The House Down", which reached the Top-10 in the UK in January 1981. Slade were back! Not content to rest on their Glam laurels, Slade began forging a new path through the hugely influential British heavy rock scene. A second successful appearance at Castle Donnington in 1981, before a crowd of over 60,000 people, consolidated the bands position and paved the way for the single "Lock Up Your Daughters", and the album "Til Deaf Do Us Part". While Slade were busy in the UK releasing the massive hit "My Oh My" to huge

acclaim, LA metal band Quiet Riot were spreading the word Stateside with their version of "Cum On Feel The Noize", which proved so successful that they followed it up with "Mama Weer All Crazee Now". Throughout the start of the eighties Slade toured and recorded due to them once again being a major force in British pop'n'rock. The early nineties saw the bands "Radio Wall Of Sound" hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 30 year chart run! In 1991, due to the continual demand from around the world, founder Slade members Dave Hill and Don Powell decided to return to touring by playing a few select dates in Europe prior to embarking on what turned out to be a very successful two month tour of Australia. SLADE have continued to tour the world. They are firm favourites on the lucrative German festival scene and undertake an annual UK "Merry Christmas Everybody" tour in December. They have a huge following of fans and regularly play concert dates in Germany, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Spain & France. Having just returned from a festival in Gibraltar, next stop is Greenland and Faroe Islands. Now in 2020, Led by founder member Dave Hill on Lead Guitar with John Berry who joined in 2003 on Lead Vocals, Bass, Acoustic Guitar and Violin. John has also played Bass with Mud, The Sweet, Screaming Lord Sutch, The Tremeloes, Bay

City Rollers & The Rubettes. Joining John on Lead Vocals and Keys is Russell Keefe, having played in many original bands in his early years, he has also recorded albums for Polygram & United Artists, Russell has toured with The Pretty Things and Les McKeown’s Bay City Rollers, Alex Bines now joins on Drums, Alex has toured with Wilko Johnson, The Rubettes and is also a Drum teacher. The marshals will be on hand in the evenings from Thursday to Saturday nights and all week long for the busy Christmas period and bank holidays providing advice and support to people making the most of the varied night-time offer in St Helens Town Centre. They will also be working directly with businesses and partners including Merseyside Police and the Street Pastors team on the streets supporting revellers in the busy run up to Christmas. All partners will focus on supporting the night time economy run smoothly and safely so that businesses can provide a good time for customers. Councillor Jeanie Bell, Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “We’re committed to making sure that visitors have a great time when they visit St Helens Town Centre and the team of marshals we

The marshals will help enhance visitor experiences and make people’s nights out a good one in St Helens Town Centre.” “These roles have been funded through the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and it means that we can continue to support businesses which have been so heavily impacted by the pandemic in the last 18 months.” The Marshals initiative is the latest from St Helens Borough Council to support St Helens Town Centre. on Saturday 18 December the cheeky Elf will be running amok in the town centre. Full details of all the town centre Christmas activities are available at www. sthelens.gov.uk/christmas

The marshals programme is being funded through the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Town Centres Fund and will initially run as an eight month pilot.

Council Receives Gold Award For Its Support For The Armed Forces In the summer it was announced by the Ministry of Defence that Burnley Council was one of only 18 organisations in the north west to have received the Employer Recognition

Scheme Gold Award for their outstanding support towards the Armed Forces community. Recently council leader Councillor Afrasiab Anwar was at an awards ceremony

at the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds, to receive an Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award to recognise the council's work to employ and support those who serve, veterans and their

families. Councillor Anwar said at the time the council got the good news: “We are delighted to have been recognised with this prestigious award. "Burnley Council is committed to supporting those who serve, veterans and their families. We have seen first hand the positive

impact as an employer and thank the armed forces for their contributions, especially during this pandemic." To win an award, organisations must provide 10 extra paid days leave for Reservists and have supportive HR policies in place for veterans, Reserves, and Cadet Force

Adult Volunteers, as well as spouses and partners of those serving in the Armed Forces. Organisations must also advocate the benefits of supporting those within the Armed Forces community by encouraging others to sign the Armed Forces Covenant and engage in the Employer Recognition Scheme.

Ktwo’s Roadeo Compact And Push Trailer Increases Capacity By 40%! Ktwo, one of the biggest British manufacturers of farming machinery, has manufactured the Roadeo Compact and Push Trailer which is being hailed the next generation of trailer. It's been designed to increase capacity by compacting its contents which can achieve up to an additional 40% per trailer. The Roadeo Compact and Push Trailer is unique in its design because it doesn't tip to empty it's produce, instead it compacts and pushes its contents out. This increases capacity through compaction and reduces costs by increasing the volume each trailer can take by up to 40%. The Roadeo Compact and Push Trailer’s success is also based on its safety and reliability. The chassis and running gear have been designed to provide maximum stability with the very best of on-and-off road handling characteristics as

demanded by today's highspeed tractors. It is fitted with high specification axles and brakes to ensure that the trailer can stop safely in all conditions. ‘’Our Roadeo Compact and Push Trailers are already being used by farmers and contractors in the UK and worldwide.’’ Explains Robbie Polson, Ktwo Managing Director. ‘’We regularly get praise

for their time and cost saving benefits to farming. The increased capacity and emptying speeds reduce fleet running costs dramatically.’’ The traditional tipping trailer is likely to be replaced by the safer and cost saving pusher design in the future. All The Things That Might Be In Short Supply For Christmas 2021 It's beginning to look a lot like... well, sort of Some may be reluctant to admit it, but Christmas is around the corner. In just over 10 weeks, we’ll be sitting around our respective dining tables eating, pulling crackers, and then eating again. After the washout of Christmas 2020, where Covid restrictions made it impossible to enjoy a "normal Christmas", many

hoped that 2021 would bring a return to the Yuletide cheer of yesteryear. Except, there might be a different kind of spanner in the works this year. Supermarket bosses have warned that there may be a shortage of some of our favourite Christmas goodies as we approach December, the result of a lack of drivers to deliver those goodies around the country.

Be it because of Brexit, Covid rates leading to isolation periods and a lack of staff, or a combination of both, there is a risk that some of your favourite festive items will be missing from your home this Christmas. “We’ve already had one Christmas cancelled at the last minute. I’d hate this one to be problematic as well,” said Richard Walker, the chief executive of

supermarket chain Iceland in recent weeks. Tesco chairman John Allan, meanwhile, said: “Normally the supermarket industry would start building stocks from now in readiness for Christmas. Longer-life products first, things like Christmas puddings and so on, shorter-life products, like fresh turkeys, very late in the day. “At the moment we’re running very hard just to keep on top of the existing demand and there isn’t the capacity to build stocks that we’d like to see.” So what could we be short of come December 25? Turkeys There are concerns that poultry farmers will only be able to produce 80% of their usual output this year, due to a shortage of workers. Richard Griffiths, chief executive at British Poultry Council, said: “It would be irresponsible to grow more birds than can be slaughtered

and processed, which is incredibly frustrating when the demand is there for quality British products.” Pigs in blankets Ah, a lot of people’s favourite Christmas lunch treat, crispy bacon wrapped around a small crispy sausage. We can’t have Christmas without

them, surely? A spokeswoman for British Meat Processors Association said it’s a possibility. “Given the current workforce shortages, meat companies are finding it difficult to see how they’ll dig themselves out of this,” she said. “Part of the issue is that

Sales E: sales@wilcopmedia.co.uk | T: 0115 6972677

it’s more difficult to time the supply of pigs in the same way that you can for Christmas turkeys, so production of Christmas favourites like pigs in blankets has to be done well in advance, and normally should have started at the beginning of July. “The problem will continue to spiral until something

changes. That ‘something’ must be an injection of new workers.” Petrol We all need petrol to do those all important Christmas rounds, delivering presents to loved ones and making sure you get to wherever is hosting this year’s festivities. But after weeks of chaos at the pumps, there are no

guarantees that everything will be back to normal by Christmas. Despite many petrol stations now having ample stocks of fuel, many in parts of England continue to be low on quantity. Policing Minister Kit Malthouse told the BBC last week: “We are still seeing strong demand in parts of the country around fuel, albeit that there is no problem of supply into the country. “The distribution mechanism is trying to respond to this unprecedented demand.” Gifts Now hang on a minute, no turkey or pigs in blankets is one thing, but no presents? Retailers, like other industries, are being hit hard by a lack of drivers, and that could mean a delay in delivering toys and other gifts, or enough of them, to stores in time for Christmas. Experts in the toy industry fear that consumers will face higher prices this Christmas as a result of economic pressures that have disrupted their plans.

Page 19.

Bins We all generate even more waste over Christmas, thanks to more packaging, more food waste, more wrapping paper, but rubbish collection is something else which could be affected due to driver shortages. Veg Surely there’ll be enough veg to go around? Labour shortages in the fruit and vegetable market could have a real impact this Christmas, according to experts. Jack Ward, chief executive of the British Growers Association, said: “If you cannot get the labour, you end up going through the crops and you might just pick out the class one and leave some of the other produce that could have been picked from those fields. “I think the longer term issue is it just continuously erodes the confidence of growers.” Christmas trees What the hell are we supposed to hang our baubles on if we run out of Christmas trees?

One farmer explained this week why even the most important festive item of all might be harder to come by this year. "With Brexit, the paperwork involved with importing the produce to grow has increased significantly,” said Rob Morgan. “There’s also a huge lack of drivers and general transportation, as most us will be aware by now, as well as lengthy shipping delays, which is really driving up

demand for local producers and farmers. “Many wholesalers are too afraid to buy from abroad these days, because of the delays and the paperwork and so on. It’s great for local farmers like me to have that extra support, but there simply aren’t enough trees at the moment to meet this sudden increase. A Christmas tree takes around 12 years to grow, so we can’t just produce more overnight.”

You can still enjoy all the festivities of the season and get through the Christmas period without too much impact on your health and waistline. Try our top 10 tips for a healthier Christmas. Don’t sit down all day We know every Christmas special under the sun will be showing on the TV, but you don’t need to plonk yourself on the sofa all day! The more activity, the better, so take along any new outdoor gifts, like bikes, scooters, footballs or Frisbees, or play oldfashioned games. Go easy on the booze. So, do try to keep tabs on how much you are drinking, and intersperse alcoholic drinks with soft ones. Don’t give yourself a Christmas stuffing! Recent research suggests that we consume around 3,000 calories in our Christmas dinner – more than the entire recommended daily intake for a grown man! This huge feast not only contributes to weight gain but also to indigestion and heartburn – not to mention lethargy for the rest of the day, reducing the chances of you burning much of it off. Instead of gorging yourself on Christmas dinner, eat a normal-sized meal and then take a 20-minute break to see if you are still hungry (it takes this long for the brain to register that the stomach is full). The chances are, you’ll realise you’ve had enough. Keep colds at bay. Colds are rife at Christmas, partly because many of us travel around the country, exposing ourselves – and others – to

"Some of the top toy trends we’re seeing for 2021 are those tied into films, with the lack of new releases last year meaning we saw very little along these lines in 2020," says Peter Jenkinson, AKA "The 'Toyologist," a UK-leading toy expert who regularly features on popular television programmes. "This year, we’ll have a new Ghostbuster film, Paw Patrol hitting the big screen and a Top Gun movie, too." The consensus is also that big-brand toys will remain popular. "There are lots of brands we’re excited about for Christmas 2021," says Gary Grant, Founder and Executive Chairman of toy shop The Entertainer. "This includes Paw Patrol, following the movie this summer. Other popular brands will include CoComelon (based on the popular children's TV show), Super Mario, L.O.L. Surprise! Cards For Kindness Launches As Christmas Countdown Continues A heart-warming winter campaign encouraging people to send Christmas cards to residents in local care homes launches on Wednesday 1 December. Cards for Kindness, now in its fourth year, aims to tackle loneliness and isolation in care homes across Lancashire and South Cumbria. The theme for this year's scheme is "What warms your heart this winter?" and people are being asked to include examples of what makes them happy alongside their festive greetings. This could be anything from pulling on a favourite Christmas jumper or eating a mince pie, to watching your favourite movie or snuggling up with the dog on the sofa on a rainy winter afternoon. The idea is that opening the Christmas card helps to start

conversations and bring back happy memories. Research shows that these conversations can have many benefits and reduce loneliness, particularly for people living with dementia. There are more than 13,600 people in care homes across Lancashire and South Cumbria, and reducing loneliness is a crucial part of improving their physical and mental wellbeing. All the information people need to get involved, including contact details for care homes, a way to send an e-card and ideas for messages, is available on the Lancashire and South Cumbria Health and Care Partnership website www. healthierlsc.co.uk/CardsForKindness. County Councillor Graham Gooch, Lancashire County

Council's cabinet member for adult social care, said: "This Christmas, Cards for Kindness is set to be bigger than ever. "Our theme is 'What Warms Your Heart in Winter', so we're asking people to include a few words about something that makes them feel happy at a time of year which can be very lonely for the people living in one of the 573 care homes across the Lancashire, Blackpool, Blackburn with Darwen and South Cumbria region. "Taking part is easy, just write your message addressed to care home residents and pop it in the post. "Care home staff do a tremendous job organising activities to ensure residents who live there can socialise and connect to each other. However, loneliness is still a huge

issue for people living in our care homes, many of whom don't have regular visits from friends, family and loved ones. "Figures show that living in isolation can have a similar effect on our health as smoking 15 cigarettes per day, so campaigns like this are absolutely crucial. "Schools, community, faith and voluntary groups and people who visit libraries are getting involved this year. They're making superb cards and gifts to help get heart-warming messages to even more people. We're also making it easier for home library service users to take part this year. "We'd encourage everyone to help us warm someone's heart by sending a card to their local care home. Just one extra card will only take a couple of minutes to write, but it'll make all the difference to someone in a care home this Christmas." Talib Yaseen, Executive

Director of Transformation from Lancashire and South Cumbria Health and Care Partnership, said: “Cards for Kindness is a wonderful way to spread a little Christmas spirit by sending a festive greetings card to people living in our local care homes. The impact of the pandemic and the isolation that many residents, staff and families endured makes the Cards for Kindness campaign even more important this year and I hope lots of people across our communities will take part in this simple but important activity. “Cards for Kindness is a joint project, with local authorities, the NHS, education and voluntary groups, community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) organisations working together to help reduce loneliness of care home residents. It will also bring some cheer to staff working in the care sector to know others are thinking of

the residents they support. “We know that Cards for Kindness has made a big impact in previous years with residents and staff telling us how much joy the cards have brought and how they have sparked nostalgic conversations about Christmases gone by.” Almost 200 care homes have signed up to Cards for Kindness so far this year. Addresses of all the care homes involved and instructions on how to take part are available at: www. healthierlsc.co.uk/CardsForKindness. Those sending Christmas cards are encouraged to share their experience on social media using #CardsForKindness.

Look After Your’Elf Is The Message To Children Across Lancashire And South Cumbria This Christmas Harry the Health Elf has arrived this festive period to share messages aimed at keeping children across Lancashire and South Cumbria healthy and safe this winter. You’ve heard of the Elf on the Shelf, but this winter it’s all about Harry the Health Elf. Schools across Lancashire and South Cumbria are being encouraged to join Harry’s healthy winter adventure, by downloading and sharing Harry’s Winter Healthy Advent Calendar. Each day of the advent calendar (that cannot be opened until on the day) will open to a video of Harry sharing a special message, aimed at reminding children across the region how to

stay healthy over the festive period and beyond. These messages will range from eating well, keeping warm, how to stay safe and where to turn if they or their loved one falls ill. Harry, Chief H’elf Advisor for the NHS said: “The festive period is an exciting time for children up and down the land. “However, it’s really important that they stay safe and healthy and so it’s my job to share messages with children that help them to stay well and know where to turn if they or a loved one falls poorly. “Schools across the region will shortly receive a letter from Father Christmas explaining how they can get involved and help share these

messages.” Harry will be appearing from 1 December and then flying back to the North Pole on Christmas Eve, so keep an eye on your local NHS social media pages. Information packs will be landing with schools in the region shortly, but if you don’t receive one in time for the launch on 1 December and your school would like to take part in the Harry the Health Elf video advent calendar, please email healthierlsc. communications@nhs.net and we can share everything with you. The Liquid Deli – Demijohn There are numerous liqueurs which can be located and, depending on liking and tastes, are every good, too. For hundreds of years liqueurs have been made, loved and appreciated, being one of the most popular alcoholic drinks around. Different herbs and fruits are included in the ingredients for the recipes, many of which are closely-guarded. If cocktails are a passion, then liqueurs will add a ‘zing’ and turn ok into the ‘WOW’ factor. Demijohn, a liquid deli, was established during 2004 by Angus and Frances Ferguson. This family-run company quickly gained a reputation for high-quality liqueurs. Multi awardwinning Demijohn goes to great lengths to source new ingredients, liqueurs, spirits, oils and vinegars from many locations in the UK and Europe. Eye-catching, beautifullyshaped glass bottles, decanters and containers, of various sizes, are an added

bonus for the impressive presentation of products. The bottles, decanters and containers are reusable and a complimentary personal message can be included, on request. From the popular productions, utilising many fruits, including raspberries, damsons, cherries, blackcurrants and gooseberries, to Rhubarb Vodka and Apricot Brandy, plus so much more, there are plenty of choices and something for all tastes and palates, including organics. Several have a ‘following’ of devotees and regularly grace a great number of dining occasions - particularly a fine, favourite liqueur, for accompanying desserts or to enjoy afterwards. I located Chocolate Rum Liqueur and found this exceptional, with outstanding balance, texture and flavour. Toffee Whisky Liqueur is very popular, as

are Demijohn’s Limoncello Liqueur and also Walnut Liqueur, plus Grapefruitcello – superb! Online ordering is available (and easy), too. Deliveries are efficient and reliable. Liqueurs, whiskies, wines and spirits are all within their excellent ranges, plus superb oils and vinegars. Hampers and attractive gift packages are available, plus gift vouchers – perhaps surprise someone special? The website has all details and includes information on products, recipes, as well as particulars about gifts, weddings and ceremonies, also how to book a tasting event – now there’s a thought! Excellent and impressive products, presented with distinction. Tel: 0845 604 8350 Email: info@demijohn.co.uk www.demijohn.co.uk

The new festive display, designed by the Blackpool Illuminations team, was launched to coincide with the reopening of non-essential retail on 2 December in a joint scheme funded by Blackpool Council and the Town Centre BID. Plans To Pedestrianise Stevenson Square Taken To The Public Stevenson Square in the Northern Quarter could be fully pedestrianised under new plans which are to be put to the public. A final consultation is being launched today which sets out Manchester City Council’s ambition to make the Square one of the most attractive destinations in the city. Hundreds of people have let the Council know what they wanted from Stevenson Square and the surrounding area through two earlier consultations. Through these exercises the Council learned the main priorities for residents and businesses in the area were: • The full pedestrianisation of Stevenson Square. • Having a space where people could sit and relax. • A safe, traffic-free space that they could move through. • Elements which reflected the character of the Northern Quarter including space for outdoor dining, public art and planted areas allowing a ‘connection to nature’. With this in mind the public will be asked for their views

on the Council’s proposals before improvement works begin in 2022. A consultation is now live, running to Tuesday 21 December. This can be found by going to www.manchester. gov.uk/consultations Some of the key changes to the area include: • The pedestrianisation of Stevenson Square. New seating and bike racks will be installed, new trees planted and sustainable draining systems (SUDS) installed. • A two-way cycle lane will run through Stevenson Square at the same level as the pavement, with tactile crossings put in place and new signage for cyclist wayfaring. • Pedestrian and cyclist crossings will be installed at the junctions of Oldham Street/Hilton Street, and Newton Street/Hilton Street. Footpaths will be widened in the area to give more space over to pedestrians. • Pay and display bays in Hilton Street will be removed. • Some loading bays in the area will be relocated to allow for these changes

to be made, whilst still retaining important space for businesses to trade. • Additional planting of trees and SUDS where possible will be added to the southeastern side of Lever Street as part of the City of Trees project. This will be subject to future surveys to find optimum space, and make

allowances for underground utilities (gas, water, electric). Councillor Tracey Rawlins, Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “I’m incredibly pleased that we’re able to take the next step towards creating a more accessible and thriving Northern Quarter.

“Making more space available for people to walk and cycle as well as introducing more green space were just two of the many priorities highlighted to us by residents and businesses throughout the consultations we’ve run. “The experience of the past year, when more space was

given over for pedestrians and cyclists was incredibly positive and signalled a shift in how people want to interact and engage with the city of Manchester. “I look forward to hearing people’s feedback on this final round of consultation and would encourage residents and businesses to take part.

Cumbrian Coastal Community Forest Gets The Green Light Thanks to a £220,000 boost from Defra’s Nature for Climate Fund to kickstart planting, this funding will see a tree planted equivalent to every resident living in Barrow, Copeland and Allerdale. Defra has approved Cumbria’s proposal for a new coastal community woodland - which will provide a series of connected community woodlands down the western coast of Cumbria. Thousands of trees will be planted over five years (up to 150 hectares)

and in the next 25 years, a minimum of 5,000 hectares of woodland will be created. These will provide direct and real benefit for people living within these communities through the development of new tree planting and woodland creation. It will offer opportunities for decarbonisation and enhance the county’s natural capital, making Cumbria a more attractive place to live and work. The development of the Cumbria Community Forest bid has been led by

Cumbria County Council, The National Trust and Cumbria Woodlands, in close partnership with other local councils including Barrow Borough Council, Copeland Borough Council and Allerdale Borough Council. It has also been supported by a range of other organisations including Art Gene, The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Britain’s Energy Coast. Councillor Celia Tibble, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “This is incredibly exciting, and I’m delighted that the county council will be taking the lead role in this initiative. Trees and woodlands are vital in our fight against climate change but not only this; they also provide far reaching physical and mental health benefits too. Being able to connect local people with local nature without the need to travel will be fantastic.” Jez Westgarth, Lakes Future Farming Programme Manager from the National Trust, added: “We have been

delighted to support the development of this exciting initiative, that will provide local opportunities for people to enjoy nature and beauty within easy reach of where they live and work. Through a range of different opportunities that the community forest will provide, we can help support and encourage everyone to be able to enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits of spending time in nature and the great outdoors." Neville Elstone from Cumbria Woodlands, said: “The development of Community Forests will provide a rich local focal point to attract visitors and make the area a more attractive location to live and work. Importantly, it’s not just increasing woodland

cover. It’s about opportunity, engagement and enjoyment for local communities and visitors alike. The complimentary opportunities for green jobs, nature recovery, carbon storage and environmental resilience are endless.” Lord Goldsmith, Forestry Minister, added: “This announcement further expands and strengthens England’s network of Community Forests. All across the country we are growing more trees and woodland than ever before, including in and around some of England’s most deprived communities. “Forests are vital for the future of our planet and this exciting new project will contribute towards our commitment to treble tree planting rates by the end of this Parliament."

Sir William Worsley, Forestry Commission Chair, said: “The incredible value of trees has never been clearer, and it is my personal passion to make sure as many people as possible get to experience their benefits. This initiative will offer local opportunities for people to enjoy nature from their doorstep, providing people of all ages and abilities with fresh air and spaces to breathe. “I look forward to working with all partners involved and will ensure that, through careful planning and expert management, the trees of Cumbria and elsewhere can continue to thrive as they grow.” There will now be extensive further engagement with a range of communities to help shape and agree the final plan."

How To Get An Upgrade On Your Honeymoon! Getting married isn’t just about going on honeymoon, but it sure is an exciting plus to the whole shebang! But how do you go about milking the special occasion for all its worth? Everyone loves an upgrade and if you can’t get one when you’re going on your honeymoon then when can you? It’s the perfect opportunity to be pampered and spoiled, especially after all the stress of the wedding planning is over. Calling first class! There are so many moments where you might be able to wangle an upgrade when you go on honeymoon. The first is the flight. This is a lot easier to accomplish if you haven’t booked a

package deal through a high street travel agency. If you’ve booked flights and accommodation separately then turning up at the airport in your finest clobber, rather than like a scruff bag (albeit a very comfy one), is a great way to find yourself boosted up to First or Business class. This is an important fact to consider as the area you want to be moved into is usually full of very wellheeled people. The next step is to arrive at the airport early. This gives you the best opportunity of nabbing any last-minute upgrades. Don’t forget to check again when you reach the gate in case an upgrade has become available since you checkedin.

Another hot tip for making it more likely to receive an upgrade is to fly on a Saturday as this is when business travellers are usually at home, meaning you have less competition. Tell the world you’re here for your honeymoon. Once you’ve made it to your honeymoon destination the next step towards getting an upgrade is to tell everyone that you’re on your honeymoon! It’s important to do this at the right time though. Telling businesses that you’re going on your honeymoon when you make the booking tends to hike the prices up. So, you’re better off waiting until you hit the runway to mention that you’re newly-

weds on honeymoon. If you’re staying in a hotel then mention at check-in that you’re on your honeymoon and ask if there are any honeymoon suites available for you to upgrade to or if there is anything they can do for you to help make your honeymoon more memorable. Then as you go about making your precious memories whilst you are away, you need to keep

speaking up. Tell everyone you meet that you’re there on your honeymoon. You never know, it might lead to a couple of free glasses of champagne over dinner at any of the restaurants you might visit! The same can be said for any activities, excursions or day trips that you intend to do whilst you’re away. Live like an A-lister. Of course, before you even

get to this stage you need to decide on where to go! If you’re at a loss for ideas, other than knowing that you want the A-list treatment, then take a leaf out of @ RocknRollBride’s book. She says that ‘If you’re looking to really go all out on your honeymoon, to have a once in a lifetime experience and to truly live it up like a rock star, then the Maldives has to be top of your list.’

Planning for your Wedding Day 2022 As couples plan for their big day for 2022 now is the time to get into shape. and start organizing for what will be the best day of their lives. For the bride, you can’t start earlier enough. You want to arrive at the alter looking vibrant with health and beauty, so what better excuse do you need to invest a little bit of time, money and energy in getting you there? Whether it is planning a few pampering trips to some spas or joining a gym, not only can you trim your figure, you’ll do wonders for your complexion and overall energy levels. Shopping for the wedding dress is probably the part of the wedding plans you are looking forward to more than any other aspect. The majority of bridal gowns bought in the UK are classed as ‘off the peg.’ You try on a sample of the gown in the shop; they take your measurements and order the most appropriate size for you which is then delivered to the shop for alterations to fit your exact shape and size.

Don’t panic, there may be a huge amount to do but here is a handy checklist with some of the main points to take into consideration in the build up to the big day! 12 months before… Choose a wedding date Decide on a budget Make a list of guests and decide on numbers Book your Church/Ceremony location. Book your reception venue/caterers. Choose your Bridesmaids, Ushers and Best Man. Start looking for The Dress!. Choose and book your photographer 8 months before… Choose bridesmaids’ dresses Book entertainment Choose and order your wedding cake Make an appointment with your chosen florist 6 months before... Give Notice of Marriage Purchase or hire menswear Select your wedding rings 4 months before... Send out your wedding invitations Arrange fittings for the

wedding dress and menswear 1 month before... Arrange a final fitting of your wedding dress your bridesmaids, ushers and best man. Enjoy your hen and stag parties! 2 weeks before... Confirm the date and time of the rehearsal to the relevant people 1 week before... 5 Reasons Why Everyone Should Make Friends With The Older Generation The Benefits of an Active Social Life We have all heard the saying that ‘laughter is the best medicine’, many of us know that this can be true in many cases. The main reason is because we usually share these funny moments with other people. No matter what our age, maintaining an active social life and making new friends is so important for our overall health. Spending time with people you love and respect affects our happiness and can relieve a massive amount of stress. When paired with other healthy habits such as eating well and staying fit, socialising frequently can help us all keep cognitively active and improve our memory. Nurturing strong social bonds isn’t just good for our mental health though, it also improves our physical health too. Research shows that reduced stress also reduces the likelihood of heart

disease, strokes, and diabetes. Reasons to Nurture Strong Relationships with Elderly People Cross-generational friendships are enlightening for both sides. From simply making strong social bonds to giving us important life lessons, there are a whole host of reasons to make friends with people from different generations. Older people can teach us life lessons which will impact our resilience, confidence, and empathy. Some more reasons to make friends with elderly people include: 1. The older generation can pass on their life lessons and experiences Older people have generally been through a lot. In other words, they have ‘been there and got the tshirt’. They have had children, gotten married, and they may have experienced living through a war. Their lives have been full of positive and negative experiences and

not to mention, they have done some very interesting things that the younger generation simply couldn’t imagine. Learning about these experiences can teach younger generations a lot about resilience, hard work, and confidence. Listening to their stories will also help them reminisce about times gone by. 2. You and and your elderly companion can both learn a lot Both sides will get some interesting cultural lessons that they simply wouldn’t learn from peers in their own age group. Everything from music and art to literature and film, you’ll learn a lot about the kind of culture that shaped their perceptions and you can teach them more about modern culture too. 3. You and the elderly can share similar interests Maybe you like playing a musical instrument or you enjoy being creative and making art? People across

different ages can share the same interests and enjoy them together. Not only that, but you can also take it a step further and learn a new hobby or skill from the older generation or you can teach them something new. 4. You are able to gain a different perspective by listening to the older generation As we grow older our opinions and perceptions change a lot. In fact, they are changing all the time and this is a positive thing because it allows us to be open minded and receptive to different ways of doing things. We all have perceptions and

stereotypes, so why not challenge them by speaking to people with different ways of thinking? 5. You might help an older person feel more connected to the world Everyone can experience loneliness, but it is particularly prominent in elderly people. Keeping in regular contact with elderly friends can help alleviate any feelings of isolation.

The use of technology has contributed to this too, it is always on the rise and people who were around before the rise of technology can sometimes feel quite lost. This is an opportunity for the younger generation to teach the older people in their lives to navigate the digital world, or atleast help them when they need to use technology in their daily lives.

Look Out For The Elderly This Winter Health bosses across Lancashire and South Cumbria are urging people to look out for their relatives, friends or neighbours who are on their own this winter. Social isolation during the pandemic has been an increased problem with many people, old and young, struggling with a lack of social contact, but this is not a new phenomenon. Every winter, we see a rise in people seeking health services because they are lonely. Andy Curran, Medical Director for Lancashire and

South Cumbria Health and Care Partnership, said: “Loneliness and social isolation in older adults are serious public health risks affecting a significant number of people and putting them at risk of dementia and other serious medical conditions. “This time of year, elderly or vulnerable people can become increasingly isolated, as they are worried about leaving the house on darker evenings or slipping on the ice in colder weather. This can lead to mental health issues such as depression, but also other health concerns if they are not keeping themselves warm or looking after themselves by eating properly. “This is why we are encouraging everyone to be a good neighbour and ask them if they are warm enough, coping in the cold weather and have sufficient basic supplies. The simplest things could make the biggest difference to their health, including offering to get some

food shopping, collect a prescription, or drive them to an appointment if they are worried about

slipping and falling on the ice. “Even taking half an hour to have a cup of tea with them can really give their mental health a boost.

“So, if you can, please do make the effort to check in on anyone you know is alone, whilst ensuring you do all you can to protect them from

the spread of Covid-19.” For advice around keeping well this winter please visit: https://www.healthierlsc. co.uk/KeepWellThisWinter

Three Home Improvement Upgrades That Add Value If you are looking to add value to your house, why not try out some home improvement upgrades? Here are five home improvement upgrades that add value… It can be super exciting to embark on home improvement projects, but it’s even better when the upgrades you opt for add value to your home. It’s worth bearing in mind, however, that some improvements might be worthwhile to you personally, they may not increase the value of the house to others. In this article, we’ll sum up our top five ways to add value to your home through improvements which you — and future buyers — will benefit from. Here are the top home improvement upgrades that add value… 1. Add insulation In addition to increasing the value of your home, installing energy-saving insulation will also reduce

your energy bills as well as ensure you’re minimising your carbon footprint. If you opt to insulate your loft or basement, this is a job that you can easily do yourself with a little bit of time and patience, but if you’re insulating your walls then we recommend you hire a professional to do it right. Another method of insulation is double glazing — double glaze your windows to further lock in warmth and add value to your home. 2. Upgrade your heating system Next on our list of home improvement upgrades that add value is to upgrade your heating system.

Adding or upgrading your heating system is a failsafe way to add value to your home. You can do this with a few options, such as replacing windows (or add double glazing if possible, as mentioned in tip #1), seal any drafts around doors and windows or replace a boiler. If your existing boiler is due an upgrade and has passed

the point of repair, then it’s a worthwhile investment to get a new boiler installed in your home. 3. Be more energy efficient There’s a number of ways to be more energy efficient and consequently add value to

your home, such as updating your lighting to LED bulbs. LED is extremely energy efficient and uses less heat and electricity for the same light output. If you have a larger budget and are looking

for something a little bit substantial, then adding solar panels and turning the sun’s light into free energy at home is a fantastic investment. These are some top home improvement upgrades that add value to your home.

Rodwell-Grant Extends Bamber Bridge Loan Joe Rodwell-Grant’s loan deal with Bamber Bridge has been extended until 1st January 2022. The 19-year-old initially joined Jamie Milligan’s side on a month-long deal, which came to an end last weekend, but he will now stay on at league leaders Brig until the new year. Joe, alongside fellow PNE first-year professional Lewis Coulton, has been heavily involved in recent weeks for the Northern Premier League Premier Division side, opening his account for them in a recent 4-1 victory over Witton Albion. He will now look to carry on gaining minutes and experience with the table toppers and continue their push for promotion. Best of luck for the rest of your loan spell, Joe!

Manchester Secure Services Of D-Man, Medric Mercier! Manchester Storm are delighted to announce the signing of blueliner Medric Mercier, most recently of Glasgow Clan (EIHL). The defenceman made his EIHL debut with Glasgow earlier this month and is now available for selection in Manchester, as the 25-yearold looks to continue his professional hockey career within the Elite League. Mercier comes from strong junior hockey pedigree with 178 OHL games between Soo Greyhounds and Oshawa Generals, in the process rubbing shoulders with current NHL skaters such as: Darnell Nurse; Nick Ritchie; Jared McCann; Tony DeAngelo and Anthony Cirelli. After a successful major junior career, Mercier spent three years representing University of Ottawa making 73 appearances and producing 37 points (17G 20A). Then, like many, the young Canadian spent

a year out of the game before heading over to the Elite League. Head Coach, Ryan Finnerty, had this to say about his newest Storm signing: “At 6ft3 and 100kg…Merc fits the bills for playing on our ice-pad. He has had a brief taste of life in the league, with the Clan, and he is hungry to make things work in the professional game. He comes from excellent hockey stock…the Greyhounds and Generals produce excellent allround players with a high hockey IQ. Having the option to bring in Merc so quickly worked perfectly for both parties and we are looking forward to seeing what

he brings to the table here in Manchester. In terms of our current position, I have always looked to leave enough in the budget to make changes; put pressure on roster spots and build flexibility into the line-up. I feel it is really important to do this as we head into the busiest part of the campaign and bringing in guys with a point to prove is something that has worked well for us in the past.”

Maxwell: Good To Blow The Cobwebs Off

Chris Maxwell was pleased to get back in a ‘match scenario’ by featuring in a game against Huddersfield Town’s B side this afternoon. The goalkeeper, sidelined with a quadricep tear since early October, got a valuable 65 minutes between the

sticks in a 2-2 draw at the Terriers’ training ground, which saw CJ Hamilton and Tyreece John-Jules on target for the Seasiders. “It was good to blow the cobwebs off and get back in a match scenario. It was much-needed and felt really good. My body

is fine and it’s great to be back,” the Blackpool skipper admitted. “It was going to be a long process (returning from injury). It took longer than I anticipated, but it’s quite normal for a thigh injury for a goalkeeper to take that much time. The

physio and the gaffer have built me up slowly and I feel great.” Sitting out nine firstteam fixtures isn’t something the 31-yeer-old is particularly used to, however he’s tried to put the time to good use and support his team-mates in a different way. “I’m not

used to missing games, and it has been difficult at times, but that’s part and parcel of football. I’ve been fortunate enough to be fit for pretty much my whole career. I’ve now learnt from the process and I’m glad to be back,” he said. “I’ve still tried to

be influential in the dressing room, even though I’ve not been on the pitch. I always try to help the players playing and those not in the squad to the best of my ability. It’s been different, but I’ve enjoyed that different type of leadership.”
