Accrington Man Found Guilty of Electoral Fraud in Local Election

In a case that underscores the importance of upholding the integrity of the electoral process, Mohammed Navid Afzal, a resident of Accrington, has been found guilty of electoral fraud relating to a local election.

Following a five-day trial at Preston Crown Court, Afzal, aged 41 and residing on Whalley Road, Accrington, was convicted by a jury of one count of fraud by corrupt practice in an election, pursuant to the Representation of the People Act 1983.

The charges against Afzal stem from his candidacy as a Conservative Party candidate for the Netherton ward during the local elections in Hyndburn on May 5, 2022. As part of his nomination process, Afzal submitted a nomination paper containing signatures from 10 local voters supporting his candidacy.

However, the prosecution contended that one of the signatures on Afzal's nomination paper was falsified, and crucially, that Afzal was aware of its fraudulent nature at the time of submission.

Following the conclusion of the trial, Afzal's guilt was established, marking a significant development in the case. Afzal is now slated

to face sentencing at Burnley Crown Court on June 21, where the court will determine the appropriate repercussions for his actions.

Detective Constable Nicolas Walker of Blackburn CID emphasized the paramount importance of safeguarding democracy, particularly during electoral processes. Walker reiterated Lancashire Police's steadfast commitment to thoroughly investigating any allegations of misconduct or irregularities in the electoral system.

The verdict in the case against Mohammed Navid Afzal serves as a stark reminder of the obligation to uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, and honesty in the electoral process. As the judicial proceedings progress, the community awaits the outcome of Afzal's sentencing, reflecting on the broader significance of ensuring the integrity of our democratic institutions.

Expert Conservator Revives Leeds Museum's Beloved Hippo

In a heartwarming display of inter-regional collaboration, an expert conservator from Lancashire has journeyed across the LancashireYorkshire border to lend a helping hand to Billie, the iconic hippopotamus at Leeds Discovery Centre.

Despite being a cherished attraction for visitors, Billie, who is nearing his centenary milestone, has begun to exhibit signs of aging, prompting concerns among curators about his deteriorating condition.

Noticing cracks and peeling paint on Billie's vintage plaster and paintwork, curators swiftly mobilized efforts to restore the beloved mammal to his former splendor, just in time for his 100th birthday next year.

Lucie Mascord, a specialist conservation officer from Lancashire County Council's Conservation Studios, spearheaded the restoration efforts alongside Leeds Museums and Galleries curators. Mascord, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to work on such a unique project, remarked, "Taxidermy like this can still hold significant educational value. Few people have seen a hippo, let alone one unsubmerged by water. Working on a full mount hippo is a rare opportunity for a natural history conservator. I am very lucky to be able to take my time to learn more about the animal and to have the honor of returning this hippo to its full majesty so it can be shared with many more people for years to come."

Billie's storied history traces back to his tenure as one of

London Zoo's star attractions in the late 1920s, capturing the fascination of zoo-goers during a period of burgeoning interest in exotic wildlife.

Following his demise from an intestinal obstruction at the tender age of seven, Billie was preserved through taxidermy and eventually found a new home at Leeds City Museum in 1938.

Surviving wartime bombings and enduring multiple relocations, Billie now stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of natural history preservation.

Upon completion of the conservation work, Billie will take his place alongside the bones of the famous Armley Hippo at Leeds City Museum. This juxtaposition will offer visitors a unique opportunity to delve into the evolutionary journey of these magnificent creatures and their habitats over millennia.

Clare Brown, Curator of Natural Sciences at Leeds Museums and Galleries, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts, highlighting the invaluable

specimens

in understanding and conserving vulnerable species today.

The conservation endeavors have been made possible through generous support from the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society and Arts Council England.

Billie's restoration serves as a poignant reminder of the power of collaborative efforts in preserving our natural heritage and enriching public engagement with the wonders of the animal kingdom.

The quest to unearth and celebrate the finest artistic talent in Lancashire has officially commenced as Lancashire Artist of the Year 2024 kicks off today, inviting artists of all skill levels to showcase their creativity by capturing their favorite Lancashire view in spring, summer, autumn, or winter.

In its ongoing commitment to fostering artistic expression and community engagement, Lancashire County Council invites artists to submit original 2D artworks, such as paintings, sketches, or collages, portraying Lancashire's diverse landscapes. Notably, entries must be painted in landscape orientation to be eligible for consideration.

"We're thrilled to launch Lancashire Artist of the Year 2024, providing a platform for artists across the county to showcase their talents and celebrate the natural beauty of Lancashire," expressed County Councillor Peter Buckley, cabinet member for community and cultural services at Lancashire County Council.

This year's competition builds upon the success of previous editions, which garnered widespread acclaim and raised funds for worthy causes. Last year, the sale of the 2024 calendars generated £2,725, with proceeds directed towards activities for care leavers in Lancashire.

Martin Williamson, the esteemed winner of Lancashire Artist of the Year 2023, shared his experience of participating in

the competition, emphasizing the honor of being recognized for his depiction of Lytham Hall. "Winning the competition was a real honor," expressed Williamson. "Landscape, buildings, heritage, and history inspire my work, and despite only living in Lancashire for a couple of months, I had already created a few loose paintings of places and locations that caught my eye."

Joining the esteemed judging panel for this year's competition are Preston artist Norman Long, Sarah Haworth from Lancashire Adult Learning, and Alex O'Toole from Arts Lancashire. Together, they will evaluate entries and curate a shortlist, which will then be subject to public vote. The artwork securing the most votes will be crowned the overall winner, gracing the cover of the 2025 calendar and earning the prestigious title of Lancashire Artist of the Year 2024.

Councillor Buckley extended a warm invitation to artists of all ages and abilities to participate in the competition, emphasizing its inclusive nature and the opportunity it presents to celebrate Lancashire's rich artistic heritage.

Life Sentences Handed to Pair for Nelson Murder

In a grim conclusion to a harrowing trial, Laimonas Prascevicius and Rimantas Vystartas have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 53-year-old Andrej Minin within the confines of their shared home in Nelson.

Following an extensive three-week trial at Preston Crown Court, the jury delivered its verdict on May 2nd, finding Prascevicius and Vystartas guilty of the heinous crime.

The tragic incident unfolded on November 5, 2023, when Lancashire Police received a distressing call from the North West Ambulance Service reporting the discovery of Andrej Minin's lifeless body at the base of the staircase in a property on Fir Street.

A subsequent Home Office post-mortem examination revealed that Andrej had succumbed to severe blunt force trauma to the head and neck, indicative of a vicious attack.

Investigations conducted by law enforcement officers uncovered a gruesome sequence of events, indicating that Andrej had been subjected to brutal beatings, kicks, and stampings before being callously dragged to the foot of the stairs in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Critical forensic evidence, including traces of Andrej's blood found on the trousers of Prascevicius and Vystartas, provided compelling proof of their culpability in the fatal assault.

Throughout the trial, both Prascevicius, 54, residing on Ball Street, Nelson, and Vystartas, 54, residing on Rigby Street, Nelson, vehemently denied any involvement in Andrej's demise. However, their assertions were emphatically rejected by the jury, leading to their conviction.

In a stern judicial response, Mr. Justice Lavender, presiding over the case, imposed

life sentences on both perpetrators, with a minimum tariff of 19 years to be served before parole eligibility.

Detective Chief Inspector Tracey McMurdo, leading the Force Major Investigation Team, condemned the "brutal and cowardly" nature of the attack, emphasizing the vulnerability of the victim within his own residence. McMurdo expressed gratitude to the jury for their diligent consideration of the evidence and expressed hope that the verdicts would offer some solace to Andrej's bereaved family and friends.

The sentencing marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for Andrej Minin, underscoring the commitment of Lancashire Police to uphold the safety and security of the community while holding perpetrators of violence to account for their actions.

Lancashire Set for Bus Service Upgrades with £8.5m Investment

In an effort to bolster public transportation accessibility and affordability, Lancashire County Council has greenlit a substantial £8.5 million spending plan earmarked for bus service enhancements, slated to roll out across the region.

The investment package, approved by the cabinet on Thursday, May 9, allocates £7.025 million from the Department for Transport's (DfT) Bus Service Improvement Plan Phase 3 funding. This significant financial injection follows the endorsement of proposals by the Enhanced Partnership Executive Board in February, where collaborative efforts between the council and bus operators were aimed at refining service provisions in alignment with the Bus Service Improvement Plan.

Among the slated improvements is the introduction of a discounted fare scheme tailored for 16-21-year-olds, affording them a third off adult single, return, and day fares purchased directly from the driver. Eligible individuals will be required to apply for an AnyBus Young Person's pass, which must be presented upon boarding. Although the specifics of the scheme are still being finalized with operators, plans are underway to launch the initiative later this year.

Furthermore, the spending plan earmarks £5.5 million from the Bus Service Improvement Plan Phase 3 funding to bankroll a discounted fare scheme for young adults. This scheme aims to foster greater affordability and accessibility for the youth demographic, encouraging increased utilization of public transport services.

An additional highlight of the proposed enhancements includes the introduction of a flat £1 adult single fare for Sundays, expanding upon the existing £1 Evening Fare offer to encompass the entire day. This initiative replaces the current 'Buy Saturday, Get Sunday Free' day ticket deal, known as the Weekender Ticket, and is scheduled to commence on May 26, 2024.

County Councillor Rupert Swarbrick, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, underscored the significance of these initiatives in enriching the public transportation landscape within Lancashire. He stated, "Lancashire residents are already taking advantage of some of the improvements we've put in place as part of our Bus Service Improvement Plan, including a reduced fares offer on many evening and

weekend services and a flat £1 fare for all journeys after 7 pm."

Swarbrick further emphasized, "These latest proposals build on these improvements, with a significant investment proposed to provide cheaper fares for young adults and the introduction of a flat £1 adult single fare for Sundays. This is on top of further enhancements to bus services, which ultimately aim to make buses more frequent, more reliable, and easier to use."

The comprehensive spending plan also

earmarks £1.32 million for various bus service enhancements, further augmenting the scope of improvements outlined in Lancashire's Bus Service Improvement Plan.

As Lancashire continues its steadfast commitment to enhancing public transport accessibility and affordability, these forthcoming initiatives are poised to redefine the commuting experience for residents across the region. Crackdown on Illegal E-Cigarette Sales in Lancashire

In a concerted effort to curb the unlawful sale of e-cigarettes to minors, Lancashire County Council's Trading Standards Officers have recently prosecuted three Lancashire businesses for flouting regulations and endangering young consumers.

The crackdown commenced with Zaishan Jahanghir, proprietor of Mr Zees takeaway on Chapel Street, Chorley, pleading guilty to four offenses at Lancaster Magistrates court in December. Jahanghir was captured on video enticing a 13-year-old volunteer test purchaser to spread word among peers that they were the 'cheapest in town' for vapes. Shockingly, officers discovered illicit vape stocks concealed within takeaway pizza boxes during a routine inspection. Additionally, the business faced charges for advertising e-cigarettes on Facebook.

Jahanghir faced the repercussions of his actions, receiving an eight-month suspended imprisonment, 150 hours of unpaid work, rehabilitation activity, and hefty fines. His sentence also included a prohibition from possessing three or more e-cigarettes simultaneously.

In a separate case, Arif Patel, company director at Euro News Ltd, trading as EN News on Orchard Street in Preston, was fined for selling an e-cigarette to a 14-year-old girl dressed in school uniform. Magistrates imposed fines on Patel and the business, Euro News Ltd, totaling £513 plus additional surcharges and costs.

The legal saga continued at Preston Crown Court, where Mohammed Hamad faced

sentencing for his involvement in the illicit sale of tobacco and vapes, including the sale of a vape to a 14-year-old, at Bacup Mini Market on Union Street last year. Hamad received a community order, community service, and substantial financial penalties.

Councillor Michael Green, cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing, underscored the severity of these offenses and the council's unwavering commitment to enforcing legal compliance. He remarked, "Our Trading Standards officers are kept busy investigating

complaints about illicit sales to young people. These cases show that continued criminality will eventually catch up with offenders."

Green further emphasized, "Not only was Mr Zees takeaway shut down for six months by the district council last year using antisocial behavior legislation, this shop was causing problems selling vapes to young people alongside pizzas. This is completely unacceptable and had to be dealt with seriously."

Man Jailed for Vicious Attack on Women at Colne Family Party

Dilnawaz Hussain's name is now synonymous with a brutal and unprovoked assault that shook the community of Colne. Last August, Hussain unleashed a vicious attack on two women attending a family gathering, leaving them with serious injuries and a lingering sense of fear.

The horrifying incident unfolded when Hussain, wearing a balaclava, forcibly entered the rear yard of a house in Colne, just a stone's throw away from his own residence. Without warning, he launched a frenzied assault on the unsuspecting victims, brandishing a

monkey wrench as his weapon of choice.

In a terrifying display of violence, Hussain struck one woman with the wrench before unleashing a barrage of punches and kicks on the other, eventually resorting to wielding a sound bar as a makeshift weapon. The victims, left bloodied and battered, endured a harrowing ordeal at the hands of their assailant.

The gravity of Hussain's actions became all too clear as the extent of the victims' injuries came to light. One woman suffered serious facial and head injuries, while the

other bore wounds to her forehead, face, and arms. The unprovoked nature of the assault underscored the sheer callousness and brutality of Hussain's actions.

28-year-old Dilnawaz Hussain's day of reckoning arrived in court last week, where he faced justice for his crimes. Pleading guilty to charges of section 18 wounding with intent, attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm with intent, and intimidating a witness, Hussain was handed a sentence befitting the severity of his offenses.

At Preston Crown Court, the

judge, recognizing Hussain as a dangerous offender, imposed a staggering sentence of 11 years and 10 months behind bars, coupled with a five-year extended license period. The severity of the sentence reflects the court's condemnation of Hussain's reprehensible conduct and its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.

Detective Constable Natalie Swindells of Burnley CID, who led the investigation, emphasized the unwavering commitment of law enforcement to holding perpetrators of violence to account. "We will not

As Lancashire remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding youth and upholding legal standards, these prosecutions serve as a stark reminder of the consequences awaiting those who flout regulations in pursuit of profit.

tolerate violence," stated DC Swindells, reaffirming the resolve of the authorities to thoroughly investigate assaults and ensure that violent offenders face the full force of justice.

As

the community grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence, the sentence handed down to Dilnawaz Hussain serves as a reminder that such despicable behavior will not go unpunished.

Ambitious plans aim to increase walking and cycling across the county

At Lancashire County Council's recent Cabinet meeting held on Thursday, May 9, councillors convened to deliberate over strategies aimed at promoting walking and cycling across the county. Collaborating closely with Blackpool Council, the council unveiled seven comprehensive Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs), designed to bridge existing gaps in the footpath and cycle route network, thereby facilitating safer, more direct, and convenient routes for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

These LCWIPs, currently in development, are poised to revolutionize walking and cycling infrastructure in key areas including Burnley and Pendle; Central Lancashire; the Fylde Coast; Hyndburn and Rossendale; Lancaster; Ribble Valley; and West Lancashire.

The inception of these plans follows extensive public engagement initiatives

undertaken last year, during which residents were invited to provide feedback on their experiences with cycling and walking, pinpointing areas in need of improvement. Armed with insights gleaned from these consultations, coupled with pertinent policies and data analyses, the council has meticulously crafted a series of network maps, laying the groundwork for future funding bids.

Scott Smith, Lead Member for Active Travel at Lancashire County Council, expressed unwavering commitment towards fostering a cycling and walking-friendly environment across Lancashire. He asserted, "We are determined to make Lancashire the best place to cycle and walk for all ages, whether for leisure or commuting, and we hope these plans will allow increasing numbers of people to make cycling and walking part of their everyday lives. These plans were formed by engaging directly with

residents right across Lancashire, recognizing that local knowledge is hugely important in enabling people to make the choice to cycle or walk, and in developing the infrastructure we need to make that easier for all."

Crucially, the formulation of these plans entailed close collaboration with district councils, underscoring a cohesive, multi-agency approach towards enhancing active travel infrastructure. The forthcoming deliberations by Blackpool Council's Cabinet in June further underscore the collaborative efforts undertaken to realize these ambitious plans.

As Lancashire sets its sights on fostering a culture of active travel, these pioneering initiatives mark a significant stride towards realizing a more sustainable, healthier, and interconnected county for all its residents.

Cabinet announces extra £5m to tackle potholes and improve county's roads

Lancashire County Council has signalled its commitment to tackling the potholes menace head-on with a further investment of £5m in the county's roads.

Councils across the UK are facing a backlog of repairs following a particularly damp winter, with Met Office data showing the country has experienced the wettest 18 months since records began.

Wet weather is a major cause of potholes, as water penetrates small weaknesses in the road surface causing cracks to open up, which is exacerbated during the winter as any moisture freezes to ice and expands.

The extra £5m agreed as an urgent decision by the council's cabinet will bring the county's highways budget for the year to over £37m, with a major focus on resurfacing sections of road where multiple potholes have appeared to avoid the need for repeated visits in future.

County Councillor Rupert Swarbrick,

cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "The pothole problem is UK-wide as a result of the record rainfall over recent months, and Lancashire is far from being alone in terms of the impact this has had on our roads - but we are already taking action to tackle it.

"We've already announced a significant programme of resurfacing schemes, and preventative maintenance based upon survey data which helps us prioritise by showing where the right treatment at the right time will make the biggest difference over the long term."

A particular impact of the wet conditions has been multiple potholes appearing on short sections of road where water has not been able to drain away due to the local ground conditions, or flows across the surface from surrounding land, but the rest of the road is still in much better condition.

County Councillor Swarbrick added: "This extra £5m will make a big difference by

ensuring our highways teams have the resources to carry out resurfacing schemes to these localised areas. In many places we will also be improving the local drainage system to reduce the likelihood of these problems reoccurring.

"Repairing our roads is our number one priority as we recognise how important this issue is to our residents and businesses.

"Keeping our roads as safe as possible during the wet and freezing weather over the winter has been very challenging for our highways teams, and I'd like to thank them for their tireless efforts. They haven't stopped, and I know they'll be continuing their hard work over the coming months to make all our journeys smoother."

The county council's deputy leader County Councillor Alan Vincent explained at the cabinet meeting that the council's strong financial position, along with the economy showing signs of recovery, meant the extra £5m could be released to accelerate highway

The extra funding agreed by Lancashire County Council's cabinet will be invested as follows:

£2.5m for 'responsive patching' to make good quality repairs to localised areas around 25m2 where the surface is in poor condition and there have been multiple pothole repairs.

£1.5m for localised resurfacing schemes. This boosts the budget for 'Local Deterioration Fund' schemes to £4.3m, ensuring more repairs can be carried out. £1m for replacing safety-critical road markings and signs.

Please help keep Lancashire's roads safe by reporting potholes or any other issues using the Love Clean Streets app, via our website lancashire.gov.uk or by calling our customer service centre, so that we can carry out prompt inspections and repairs.

Chorley Shopworker Banned from Selling Tobacco and Vapes

In a stern move by Lancashire's Trading Standards officers, a Chorley shopworker has been prohibited from selling tobacco and vape products for a year. Abdullah Ahmed, 19, found himself on the receiving end of this ban after Blackburn Magistrates Court was informed of his repeated sale of vapes to minors between June and September 2023. The transactions occurred at Huff Puff & Candies, situated on Chapel Street in Chorley, which has since ceased operations.

Ahmed, a resident of Gilnow Road in Bolton, was served with a Restricted Sale Order (RSO), a measure that bars him from vending any tobacco or nicotine items, along with cigarette papers. Furthermore, he is restricted from assuming managerial roles at establishments dealing in such products. This notable action marks the first instance of an RSO being issued by Lancashire's Trading Standards team.

Despite Ahmed's objections regarding the impact on his retail employment prospects, magistrates remained resolute, imposing the maximum 12-month ban at their disposal. This penalty supplements fines and

expenses exceeding £700, levied against Ahmed by Preston Magistrates' Court earlier in the year for the aforementioned sales.

Parallel legal proceedings against Ahmed's employer, Umar Abbas, also of Gilnow Road, Bolton, have been temporarily adjourned pending sentencing later this month.

Councillor Michael Green, the cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing, lauded the decisive measures undertaken by authorities. He remarked, "This is the first Restricted Sale Order we have obtained in our fight against traders who sell tobacco and vapes to children. Abdullah Ahmed was caught red-handed three times in as many months. His 12-month ban will give him plenty of time to reflect on his offending. Selling vapes and other tobacco products to children places them at significant risk of harm and this is

totally unacceptable. Our Trading Standards team will always take the strongest action possible against those who openly break the law. We encourage anyone who has concerns about the sale of any age-restricted products to report these to Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Service helpline

This decisive action underscores Lancashire's commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its youth and upholding the integrity of age-restricted product regulations.

JLS BRINGING THE HEAT TO SUMMER 2024

As the anticipation builds for the Summer Hits Tour 2024, JLS fans across the nation are gearing up for what promises to be an unforgettable series of outdoor shows. The much loved boys are headed to Newcastle’s Gosforth Park on 30th June 2024 and excitement is reaching fever pitch. Ahead of the tour, we caught up with half of the iconic British boy band, Aston Merrygold and JB Gill, to get an insider’s perspective on what fans can expect.

The dynamic duo assured us that come rain or shine, the show must go on. With England’s unpredictable weather, they promised that each outdoor venue would offer a unique ambiance, adding an element of spontaneity to every performance. And for those concerned about potential downpours, fear not, as JB and Aston guaranteed a show-stopping experience regardless of the weather.

But what about special guests? JB revealed that the Summer Hits Tour

would feature some exciting surprises, including appearances by renowned DJ and producer Jax Jones, a close friend of bandmate Marvin Humes. This collaboration promises to elevate the energy of the tour to new heights, ensuring that fans are in for a treat.

When it comes to merchandise, Aston and JB disclosed that there will be new items available, although the classic JLS hoodies in signature red, green, yellow, and blue remain fan favorites. Speaking of colours, the duo admitted to a friendly rivalry over which member garners the most support based on hoodie colour. JB humorously acknowledged Aston’s dominance among fans sporting blue, but we suggest it’s time for fans to mix it up and show love for all members as equally as we can!

Reflecting on past tours, JB fondly reminisced about the 4th

Dimension Tour, where the group made a dramatic entrance by descending from the ceiling in 2012. Meanwhile, Aston shared his favourite memories of the Beat Again Tour, which marked a triumphant return for the group post-pandemic. The overwhelming support and electric atmosphere of that tour left a lasting impression on both members, underscoring the profound connection between JLS and their fans.

Away from the stage, JB and Aston shared their essential items for life on the road. JB’s practical trio includes tea tree oil for health, Carmex for chapped lips, and plenty of water for hydration, while Aston opts for aftershave, chewing gum, and tequila for a touch of indulgence—a testament to their distinct personalities and camaraderie.

As veterans of the music industry since their meteoric rise on The X Factor in 2008, Aston and JB have witnessed significant changes in how music is consumed. They reflected on the shift from physical album sales to streaming platforms, highlighting the evolving landscape of the industry.

Touching on a note that hits home to a lot of people,

the conversation turned to mental health, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. Aston and JB spoke candidly about their own experiences with anxiety and offered words of reassurance to fans struggling with similar issues. Their message was clear: it’s okay not to be okay, and no one should feel alone in their struggles. Drawing from their own support system within the group, they emphasized the importance of reaching out for help and leaning on loved ones during challenging times.

In closing, Aston and JB extended a heartfelt invitation to fans, urging them to join JLS on what promises to be a memorable journey through music and cheer. With tickets now on sale, the Summer Hits Tour 2024 is primed to be an experience like no other, uniting fans old and new in a celebration of music and resilience.

For those eager to secure their spot at the hottest event of the summer, tickets are available now at www. jlsofficial.com. Don’t miss your chance to be part of the magic that is JLS live in concert.

World of James Herriot - Explore & Discover

It’s easy to see why the World of James Herriot visitor attraction attracts visitors from all over the world. There’s so much to see and do here… It’s not just for fans of the books!

The 1940s home and surgery

Stepping through the famous red door of 23 Kirkgate, Thirsk is to step inside the World of James Herriot, the fully-restored site of his original 1940s home and veterinary practice (known in his books as Skeldale House, Darrowby) set in the heart of stunning Herriot Country.

The dining room and practice office Explore this magical time-capsule, where the world’s most famous vet and one of the most popular writers of the twentieth century lived, worked and wrote his much-loved stories based on his experiences as a young veter-

inary surgeon working among the farming community of North Yorkshire.

The home retains many of the original furnishings in the family rooms, frozen in time. The dining room doubled as the practice office, where farmers’ bills were typed up at the desk; the sitting room displays original books and family photos; the basement converted to an air raid shelter during the Second World War; the breakfast room favoured for its relative warmth and the reproduction of a typical farmhouse kitchen.

The original dispensary containing all potions great and small

As well as a family home, it was also a busy surgery with a dispensary crammed with fascinating ancient and bizarre remedies and the cramped and primitive consulting room that saw the treatment of many a poorly pet – only creatures small were dealt with by Alf in here!

Interactive Gallery

There’s no telling children ‘don’t touch’ in this gallery! Designed to engage children, young and old, the pieces use fun and interaction to educate visitors about farm animals and how they interact with our lives.

Full of fascinating facts, the gallery gives visitors the opportunity to test their skills, knowledge and reflexes whilst learning how vets work with farmers to keep animals fit and well. Not just for children!

There is one installation that TV viewers particularly will recognise and that’s the ‘not to be missed’ opportunity to place your hand up a cow’s bottom! An essential skill that every vet has to learn, All Creatures Great and Small actor Christopher Timothy famously did his part on several occasions, much to

the amusement of the cast, crew and viewing public!

Herriot Memorabilia

The World of James Herriot houses the largest collection of Herriot memorabilia in the world – from books, posters and letters to ornaments and collectables.

The Memorabilia Room is dedicated to displaying items that were instrumental in James Herriot’s writing career.

TV Studios

Take a close-up look behind the scenes of a reproduced set from the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small and experience the fascinating world of the TV studio and

what was involved in the making of the TV program.

You can be the star of the show! Get in front of the camera and imagine yourself as Christopher Timothy playing James Herriot, Robert Hardy as the eccentric Siegfried Farnon, Peter Davison as Tristan Farnon, or Carol Drinkwater and Lynda Bellingham who both played James’ wife Helen Herriot.

The series was a hugely popular show and had two runs from 1978 to 1980 (based directly on Alf’s books) and 1988 to 1990 (filmed with original scripts). The equipment on display shows just how far technology has moved on in TV and film, the huge cameras, endless cables, the intense heat from the lighting rigs all making life pretty uncomfortable for the actors involved.

The Austin Seven Car from ‘It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vet’

The latest addition to the centre’s collection is the original 1938 Austin Seven car, Registration JK 7443.

It appeared in the film “It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vet” with actor John Alderton as James Herriot, when it famously broke down in a

Veterinary Science Rooms

There’s an incredible array too of veterinary paraphernalia from Herriot’s time as a young vet – in an era before advances in diagnostics, modern medicine and agricultural machinery. It is the largest collection in the world.

On display is a 4,000 piece archive showcasing veterinary instruments from the past to the modern day. These items chart the history and progress of the profession over the years. Some of the instruments appear primitive but were all designed for a particular purpose,

since refined and updated for the modern vet’s practice.

The display reveals the close link with veterinary surgeons and the armed forces, from the days of the mounted cavalry and horses pulling gun carriages and supply wagons in warfare. Even today, ceremonial horses and battle-trained guard and sniffer dogs are the responsibility of the Royal Army Veterinary Corp, formed in 1796.

Foldyard and The Farrier’s Workshop

Much of Alf Wight’s work took place in farms all over North Yorkshire. To the rear of the house you will find the Foldyard and The Farrier exhibits, both with which Alf would have been very well-acquainted.

The Foldyard (described as an enclosure for sheep or cattle) houses a collection of primitive-looking hand tools in everyday use in farms before machinery appeared. In the hands of skilled workers, however, these tools were most effective. The Foldyard provides an authentic setting for visitors to watch an exclusive short film of Alf Wight, his family and friends and the cast of All Creatures Great and Small.

In the Farrier’s Workshop. the role of the farrier, which combines skills of both blacksmith and vet, is brought to life in this interesting exhibit. Before tractors and combine harvesters, farming relied on manual labour and what limited mechanisation existed was driven by horses. Farriers were an integral support to this system until the inevitable march of progress.

International campaign celebrates the diverse roles of nurses in healthcare

The crucial and wideranging roles that nurses play within the NHS in Lancashire and South Cumbria are being celebrated this International Nurses Day (Sunday 12 May).

Nursing is the backbone of almost every aspect of healthcare, and the annual worldwide campaign aims to shine a light on all aspects of the profession.

As well as traditional and familiar nursing roles, within the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) there are also many roles that are rooted in nursing or have nursing at their core.

Wendy Lewis is the director of system coordination and flow for the ICB. Having followed a regular career path into nursing, she

became a clinical teacher supporting students through their training, and has also worked as a ward manager, been involved in the enhanced recovery pathway

within the Department of Health, and had roles with NHS England and the Advancing Quality Alliance – but her entire career has been directly informed by a strong nursing foundation.

“That gives a credibility to my role that I’m aware of the clinical and operational environments and decisions that need to be juggled, and I respect the people in those roles hugely,” she said.

“I think it allows me to challenge and support work from a different perspective and contribute from my clinical background.

“My role is to oversee how the system are managing (patient flow) at hospital, place and system levels, using the available resources, and to promote that they involve the voice of the patient, carers and staff in what they are doing.

“I’m desperately proud of my background in nursing and I’ll never lose it. I use it every day – it’s my frame of reference for everything.”

Debbie Wardleworth is the ICB’s associate director of learning disability and autism. A nursing role, a large part of it is supporting people with a learning

disability or autism to be discharged from hospital, where they no longer need to be in hospital and can be returned home. Again, the patient-facing experience of nursing is present in all that she does.

“Me and my team support individuals to get the right package of care to make sure that they’re safe, and to reduce the chance of them being readmitted back into hospital. To do that we work with a multi-disciplinary team - community disability nurses, and autism specialists – and we keep the person at the centre of that, which is really important.

“I love my job every day. It’s different; I still get to meet with people, which is important to me as a nurse, I get to speak with people face-to-face and get to work with them, I get to find out what’s important to them and try to put that into practice. But also, I feel like I’ve got the scope to make a difference.”

For Ola Adelusi, the desire to provide support for people that need it is what drove her into nursing, and that hasn’t changed throughout her career, whether that has been working in various specialities, in medicine, in

theatre, or in her current role with the Discharge to Assess (D2A) Team as a Continuing Healthcare advisor.

“I actually love what I do and I am passionate about the profession.

“With the D2A team we assess and support the flow of patients in acute hospitals to ensure that patients are discharged in a timely manner to the right place, where they will receive the right care that meets their needs.

“I still feel like I’m supporting the patient. I feel that kind of fulfilment, that I’m doing a lot to get patients discharged as soon as possible from hospital after they are medically fit to go to where they can be cared for safely and appropriately.

“I don’t think I would have done anything else except being a nurse. I believe we do have a beautiful heart, and it’s not about admiration or anything, it’s just the passion we have for the profession, for the job, and of course for the people we look after.”

The Beauty and Benefits of Small and Simple Weddings

When it comes to weddings, the trend of grandiose celebrations and extravagant affairs has long been the norm. However, a new movement is sweeping through the North West of England, where couples are embracing the charm and intimacy of small and simple weddings. In this edition, we explore the numerous benefits of these intimate gatherings and why they are becoming increasingly popular among lovebirds across the region.

Personal Connections

One of the most significant advantages of a small and simple

wedding is the opportunity to foster meaningful connections. With a smaller guest list, the couple can spend quality time with each attendee, ensuring that everyone feels valued and appreciated. Closeknit gatherings create an atmosphere where laughter flows freely, and memories are shared effortlessly, leaving a lasting impression on both the couple and their guests.

Intimate Venues

The North West is blessed with a plethora of stunning venues that cater to small wedding gatherings. From picturesque countryside barns to quaint boutique hotels, these intimate

settings exude charm and elegance. Couples can focus on selecting the perfect venue that resonates with their personalities and aesthetics, ultimately creating an enchanting backdrop for their special day.

Stress-Free Planning

Planning a grand wedding can quickly turn into a logistical nightmare. However, opting for a small and simple wedding significantly reduces the stress associated with the process. Couples can focus on the details that truly matter to them, leaving behind unnecessary extravagance and

concentrating on creating an intimate and heartfelt celebration.

Budget-Friendly Celebrations

Weddings can be expensive affairs, often leaving couples with hefty debts to repay long after the vows are exchanged. Embracing a small and simple wedding approach allows couples to allocate their budget wisely. They can invest in quality experiences for their guests, such as bespoke catering, personalized favors, and memorable entertainment, without breaking the bank.

Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Choices

Page 36. Sales E: sales@deviltreemedia.co.uk | T: 0115 6972679

In this age of environmental awareness, many couples are opting for eco-friendly wedding options. Small weddings inherently generate fewer carbon emissions, waste less food, and require less overall resources. Couples can choose sustainable decor, locallysourced cuisine, and embrace ethical practices, making their wedding a true reflection of their commitment to the planet.

Uninterrupted Moments

A smaller wedding ensures that the couple’s most important moments remain uninterrupted. Whether it’s heartfelt vows or an emotional first dance, an intimate gathering allows the couple to be fully present and immerse themselves in the experience without distraction. These genuine and unfiltered moments create lasting memories for the couple and their cherished guests.

Flexibility and Creativity

With a reduced guest list, couples have more freedom to get creative with their wedding elements. They can personalize each detail to reflect their unique love story and shared interests. From DIY decor projects to custom-made invitations, a small and

simple wedding provides the canvas for the couple’s artistic expression. Post-Pandemic Appeal

In a post-pandemic world, intimate gatherings have taken on new significance. Many couples have reevaluated their priorities, realizing that the presence of loved ones matters more than the size of the event. Small weddings became a practical choice during uncertain times, but their charm and appeal have endured even as life returns to normal.

As the trend of small and simple weddings continues to grow in popularity throughout the North West of England, it is evident that couples are discovering the beauty in embracing intimacy. From fostering personal connections to promoting sustainability and creativity, these charming celebrations are a testament to the fact that true love knows no bounds. So, whether you’re planning your own special day or attending as a guest, remember that the magic of a wedding lies not in its extravagance, but in the sincerity and affection shared by all.

Preston North End’s Milutin Osmajić From Montenegro to Lancashire

When Milutin Osmajić arrived at Preston North End back in September, his ambitions were crystal clear: "Sólo Premier League," he declared on his first day, expressing his unwavering desire to propel the team into England’s footballing elite.

Though the journey to the Premier League might be deferred for now, Osmajić remains resolute in his belief in the team's potential. Speaking with growing confidence in English, he asserted, "With this team and these players, I think next season Premier League 100% [is achievable] because this club is very good and the players are very good."

Osmajić's footballing odyssey has been a tale of perseverance and adaptation, from his upbringing on humble pitches in Montenegro to facing European giants like Barcelona and Real Madrid. Recounting his early days in Cádiz, where he was struck by the disparity in footballing infrastructure, Osmajić reminisced, "I saw training, the pitches, everything, and thought, ‘What is this?’" Yet, he swiftly acclimatized, making a mark with impressive performances against top-tier opponents.

However, playing time wasn’t always guaranteed for Osmajić, prompting loan moves to Turkey and Portugal, where he continued to showcase his talent against

formidable adversaries. Reflecting on his experiences, he fondly recalled memorable moments such as scoring against Benfica, demonstrating his prowess on the field.

The allure of English football beckoned Osmajić, who seized the opportunity to join Preston North End, drawn by the fast-paced nature of the game and the club's esteemed reputation. Despite initial language barriers, Osmajić's determination saw him quickly adapt, aided by immersive methods like watching Netflix with English audio and subtitles.

For Osmajić, football isn’t just a game; it's a lifelong passion cultivated since childhood.

Starting at the age of six, he honed his skills tirelessly, driven by an insatiable appetite for scoring goals. Now, at Preston North End, Osmajić aims to continue his goalscoring exploits, fuelled by a fervent desire to contribute to the team's success.

The total amount raised during the event has surpassed an incredible £88,000. The charity are immensely grateful to everyone who participated and contributed to the fundraising efforts of the evening.

The evening was hosted by Dion Dublin and Natalie Sawyer, who kicked off the night by highlighting the significance of the charity’s work through the inspiring story of Jamaal, Burnley FC in the Community’s Community Captain.

Over the course of the night, three additional participant videos were screened, featuring Alfie from the Premier League Kicks and Shadow Youth Team, Troy from Walking Football, and Michelle from Clarets Rise. The videos underscored the broad-

reaching impact of Burnley FC in the Community in the local area, demonstrating its ability to positively influence individuals from diverse backgrounds through various projects.

The evening was packed with games and a silent auction

The prize was claimed by Burnley FC Manager Vincent Kompany, and we eagerly anticipate seeing who he selects to be “locked up” for the day.

The evening’s entertainment was capped off with a special performance by Boyzlife, featuring Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy. Their performance was a hit with all the guests, and soon the dance floor was filled with everyone singing along.

Wanderers Triumph

Evatt Praises Players and Fans as Bolton Secures Wembley Dream

Ian Evatt, the manager of Bolton Wanderers, has heaped praise on his players and the fervent supporters for propelling the team to the brink of promotion, securing a coveted spot at Wembley Stadium. The Whites sealed their place in the League One play-off final in a thrilling encounter against Barnsley, clinching a 5-4 aggregate victory on a night brimming with tension and drama at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Trailing 2-1 at halftime with goals courtesy of Aaron Collins and Eoin Toal, Wanderers found themselves facing a relentless onslaught from Barnsley in the latter stages of the match. However, displaying resilience and determination, Evatt's men weathered

the storm, denying Barnsley's bid to force extra time. With this hard-fought triumph, Bolton Wanderers now stand just one victory away from potentially securing a place in the Championship.

Reflecting on the team's performance, Evatt emphasized the significance of perseverance and composure under pressure. "We've dug it out, and for large parts of both games, we deserve to be through," remarked the manager, who is eyeing his second promotion in three years at the helm of Wanderers.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of the fans in galvanizing the team, Evatt lauded their unwavering support throughout the

encounter, particularly during the decisive moments of the match. He underscored the importance of the fans' energy in driving the players forward, expressing hope for a strong turnout at Wembley.

Despite the euphoria surrounding the team's achievement, Evatt remained focused on the ultimate goal, emphasizing the need for meticulous preparation ahead of the final showdown. "I'm not really going to celebrate. I'm going to take a minute to enjoy what we've done and achieved and then diligently prepare for one more game," he asserted.

With the prospect of a return to the Championship looming large, Evatt

expressed gratitude to everyone involved with the club, recognizing their unwavering dedication and support. "We're on the right path, we're on the right track, and we're one game away from achieving the first target from when I first came," he affirmed, underlining the collective determination to propel Bolton Wanderers to greater heights.

As Wanderers gear up for their impending battle at Wembley, the spirit of unity and resilience that has defined their journey thus far serves as a beacon of hope for fans and players alike. With destiny beckoning, Bolton Wanderers stand poised to seize their moment and etch their name in footballing lore once more.
