My name is Wildan Helmi. This portfolio is a compilation of my best art works and designs throughout my college years.

GIZA This typography was made purely manual drawing, it started by finding the concept and that was Egyptian pattern then from the concept i started to make the shape of the typography then the pattern.I stuck with black for my fonts because its more raw and natural for the pattern but i still tried putting it in digital form to make it look more neater , the reason i named my font Giza is because Giza is one of the is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact.

DISTORTED This is my interpretation of franz kafka’s book called metamorphosis, it is about Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman, who wakes up in his bed to find himself transformed into a large insect. So my final project was to read the book and draw something about Gregor Samsa in that situation, so the drawing shows that he is transforming into an insect while his real body is disintegrating and morphing into an insect.

The practice sketch is on an A3 size drawing paper, then finalizing the art work on an A1 size drawing paper.

For the cover I went with a simple approach by using only three colours (Red, Black and White). For the three illustrations I find three passages from three different chapters that interests me the most, then start the illustration from there.

Norwegian wood the original idea was to make a symbol that represents the love triangle that happened between Toru the male character Naoko the female character that Toru fell in love with and Midori the roommate of Naoko, But the reason i did not continue this idea is because i couldn’t find the right way to create a symbol that represents a love triangle without being to obvious so I’ve decided to go a different approach, I started with the idea of the first person point of view and so I illustrated the cover in the point of view of Toru who is laying down on the ground staring at the branches while having to overcome grief because of loosing the girl that he loves.

Norwegian Wood Summary Norwegian Wood begins with Toru Watanabe, a middle-aged man who feels overwhelmed by a sense of nostalgia as he listens to the song 'Norwegian Wood' by the Beatles. Hearing this song sends Toru tumbling eighteen years into the past to a time when he was still a college kid. During that time, Toru's best friend, Kizuki, who was in a loving relationship with Naoko, commits suicide to the disbelief of his friends. Toru tries to offer emotional support to Naoko, but ends up falling desperately in love her. Sadly for Toru, Naoko is in no state to be in a relationship. Kizuki's death has left her emotionally unstable. Realizing that she cannot control herself or her depression, Naoko seeks help at a mental institution. Toru, still madly in love with her, visits Naoko during her stay. Toru meets Naoko's roommate, a musician named Reiko, and the three quickly become very close. It is through Reiko's mature guidance that Naoko and Toru are able to become intimate. Toru promises Naoko that he will continue to love her, but eventually finds himself distracted at college after a chance encounter with a girl named Midori. Midori seems to be the complete opposite of the now gloomy Naoko. Toru becomes enamored with her upbeat and happy-go-lucky attitude. Toru continues to see Midori and realizes that his relationship with Naoko cannot last - especially as Naoko's mental state continues to worsen. Toru eventually tells Midori about his love affair with Naoko, and Midori breaks off their relationship. As Toru decides to officially end it with Naoko, Reiko informs Toru that Naoko has committed suicide. Lost and feeling utterly alone, Toru wanders the country dazed and deeply hurt. Toru is brought ''back to life'' when Reiko visits him. After spending an hour talking about Naoko, Reiko and Toru have sex. The next morning, Reiko leaves for a new town and a new start on life. After some time, Toru attempts to reconnect with Midori, but no promises are made.

A Child Called IT ONE CHILD’S COURAGE TO SURVIVE

In this project I have chosen to re-create the book cover ‘A Child Called It’ and illustrate images from the chapters of the book. This book ‘A Child Called It’ is an autobiography of Dave Pelzer when he was a young boy who is starved, beaten, and tortured by his mother. Despite this terrible beginning he manages to turn his life around. David uses his faith, a positive attitude, and determination to survive his mother’s abuse. For the reason why I chose this book is because this book has a sentimental value to me, It was the first book I finished when I was in Grade school and it became one of my favourites. This

book has a heavy subject in talking about his abuse that he went through with his mother,

The flow of how the story is told has an up down feel in how the author tells the narrative.

My initial idea for the illustrations are

some based from the perspective of the persona in the book but others in an angle.

turn away from the rays as a single tear runs down my cheek. “I’m free?”

Chapter 2 - Good Times

Chapter 3 - Bad Boy

We lived in a modest two bedroom house, in what was considered a “good” neighbourhood in Daly City. I can remember looking out of our living room bay window on a clear day, to gaze at the bright orange towers of the Golden Gate Bridge and the beautiful skyline of San Francisco.

said goodbye to Ron and Stan, he knelt down, held my shoulders tightly and told me to be a “good boy”. Mother stood behind him with her arms folded across her chest, and a grim smile on her face. I looked into my father’s eyes and knew right then that I was a “bad boy”

When I returned to the house from school, I immediately accomplished the various chores Mother assigned me. When the chores were finished, I went directly to the basement, where I stood until summoned to clean off the dinner table and wash the dishes.

It was made very clear that getting caught sitting or lying down in the basement would bring dire consequences.

I focused all of my attention on Mother’s face. Out of the corner of from just above my stomach. I tried to remain standing, but my legs gave out, and my world turned black.

Chapter 6 - While Father Is Away She sent me to clean the bathroom with her usual time limits. But this time, she put a bucket, filled with a mixture of ammonia and Clorox, in the room with me and closed the door.

“Well, Mr. Ziegler says I should be so proud of you for naming the school newspaper. He also claims that you are one of the top pupils in his class. Well, aren’t you special?” Suddenly, her voice turned ice cold and she jabbed her finger at my face and hissed, “Get one thing straight, you little son of a bitch! There is nothing

you can do to impress me! Do you understand me? You are a nobody! An It! You are nonexistent! You are a bastard child! I hate you and I wish you were dead! Dead! Do you hear me? Dead!”

Epilogue Bluejays call to each other as they glide through the air before disappearing into the redwoods. The sky above is now bathed with streaks of orange and blue. I take another deep breath and close my eyes, savouring the moment like I did years ago.

Collages All the collages are taken from old magazines, newspaper articles and some playing cards combined together with my illustration.

KOMODO ISLAND LOGO This is a logo for the Komodo island, It is for a class called ideas generation. I made the branding for Komodo island and the technique that it used is by water color with alittle bit of photoshop and the font is through digital editing. The reason why I did not put a komodo dragon in the logo is because the first think that people think and picture the Komodo island is komodos, so I wanted to design a logo from a different angle, thus I crated the islend itself as the logo.
