Our best ever race experiences I lost weight and became a marathon runner “My best race experience by far was this year’s London Marathon. My journey started three years ago with me being incredibly overweight. I found a personal trainer and the weight fell off. I set my sights on being able to run the full eight minutes to the gym. “In the end I lost eight stone and the running distances increased – five miles, 10K and half marathon all completed. “Then I decided to apply for the London Marathon. A hard winter of training followed but I did it – 26.2 miles of London lined with people supporting and cheering, making those cold training runs worthwhile. It has to be one the most challenging yet exhilarating things I have ever done.’
Paula made London more special “I am a runner from Cornwall: Bodmin Road Runners to be precise. I have been running for about seven years and regularly take part in races, both locally and nationally. “Last month I ran the London Marathon. It was my eighth marathon and my third time running London. I am sure that the Paula Effect had a huge impact this year. The atmosphere was out of this world and it felt amazing to be part of it. “I ran my best ever race, knocking 20 minutes off my previous PB and cannot begin to tell you how brilliant that feels! When I crossed the line, hand in hand with a stranger called Harry, I had more than a tear in my eye.”
I loved the fancy dress and the wine “I’m a long-distance runner and have run seven marathons and numerous half marathons. But the experience that sticks in my mind is arriving at the start of the Medoc Marathon in France. The atmosphere was electric everybody was in fancy dress (the theme was science fiction when I did it in 2013). There were women dressed from head to toe in gold doing acrobatics, elaborate fancy dress costumes and a fair few exhibitionists with not much on under their superhero capes! “I took my camera along and soaked up the atmosphere. I even stopped for a boogie and listened to some of the live bands. It was surreal, crazy and a great laugh.”
