THE HOPE NORTHERN SKELETON RUN 1 NOVEMBER 2014 Located in Keswick, this trail run is five miles in length and has you tackling hills, marshals and everything else you would expect from a tough cross-country course. Armed with a sting in its tale, it concludes with a downhill sprint to the finish. Taking place within the boundaries of Whinlatter Forest, the run offers plenty of fantastic views. This exciting race is sure to leave you wanting more. www.theskeletonrun.co.uk
BRUTAL 10 LONG VALLEY 15 NOVEMBER 2014 This tough, no-nonsense race is a real test of physical fitness. The course, which is designed by British Army officers and champions of the G3 Series, is put together to give runners the ultimate challenge. The wet and muddy 10K makes running hard, and racing even harder. Can you handle a duck pond, swan lake and alligator swamp? If so, prepare yourself for a soggy, gruelling and brutal task! www.brutalrun.co.uk
THE WOLF RUN 1 NOVEMBER 2014 The inclusion of “wolf” in the title gives you some idea of the nature of this event that comprises some wild terrain. The 10K run covers extremely challenging terrain, and can be completed as a team or individually (or more fittingly, as a pack or a lone wolf). The course tests both mind and body, and the Leicestershire winter event is considered a step up from the summer and autumn alternatives. www.thewolfrun.com
NIGHT RUSH EXTREME RUN 22 NOVEMBER 2014 This fun Essex 10K isn’t easy, no way. The Night Rush Extreme Run is just that; extreme. Taking you off-road over undulating terrain, you’ll race over motorcross tracks and farm fields on your way to the finish line. The course is also scattered with a number of obstacles that will have you pushing yourself to the very max. Armed with only a head torch, can you beat it? www.havenshospicesevents.org. uk
BACK 2 THE TRENCHES 2 NOVEMBER 2014 The Big Push, which is one of three events held across the year, is described as “the big one”. Located in Redhill, Surrey, you’re given the choice between their 6K, 12K or 18K race – so it’s suitable for all abilities. You’ll tackle steep climbs and plenty of mud and water on this testing course. The route is tough and varied, however the difficulty level is up to you. So, how far are you willing to go? www.back2thetrenches.co.uk
BRECON BEACONS WINTER ULTRA 6 DECEMBER 2014 At the start line, temperatures have been known to drop to a chilling minus 12 in recent years. So wrap up, and expect slippery steep slopes and boggy terrain. At 41 miles in length, this ultra takes runners on a single loop route that includes over 2,400 metres of ascent and descent. So, although it doesn’t quite reach the same heights as the summer event, it’s still worth taking seriously! www.mightcontainnuts.com
THE SUFFERING 8 NOVEMBER 2014 The Suffering is a 10K obstacle race that is the event’s middledifficulty run, in between Suffering and Pain & Suffering – its 5K and ten mile alternatives. The course features more than 25 obstacles, including “the mini gauntlet” and “the spider’s web”. Located in Rockingham Castle’s Great Park, the event is certainly no casual stroll in the park. It’s called The Suffering for a reason! www.thesufferingrace.co.uk
PORTSMOUTH COASTAL MARATHON 21 DECEMBER 2014 This wintertime marathon is a tough test from start to finish. Starting at the South Parade Pier and heading towards the end of the Hayling Billy line, it stretches 13.1 miles out before turning back the same way. Comprised of mud, puddles and the occasional spot of tarmac – expect knee-deep seawater towards the end, too. Prepare for some harsh coastal winds, and build up that mental strength. www.fitprorob.biz
PAIN & SUFFERING 9 NOVEMBER 2014 This ten-mile obstacle race, held at Northamptonshire’s Rockingham Castle, really is a painfully exhausting experience. The course contains over 35 obstacles, and has you tackling a giant wall, minigauntlet and tyre-carry run – uphill. As the title suggests, it’s not the easiest of events. So, if you don’t fancy jumping straight in, the 5K and 10K options are great for easing your way in! www.thesufferingrace.co.uk
ICEMAN TRAIL RUN JANUARY 2015 Enjoy mud, dirt and hills? Great, because this race – located on an army training ground in Frimley, Surrey – offers you your fair share. Battle its rocky, hilly and sloped terrain on a route that consists of two loops. The first takes in mossy forest trails and the second goes up one of the area’s steepest ridges. Which means whether you opt for the 11K or 16K option, expect a tough but rewarding run. www.humanrace.co.uk

But when you’re standing at the start line, you’ll have only your fancy dress outfit to keep you company! The weather will prove challenging, but this is a fun, lively and testing event. Give it a go! www.tronium.com

GLADI8OR 8 MILE CHALLENGE 7 FEBRUARY 2015 Held in Surrey’s Thetford Forest, this demanding obstacle race would have given even the finest of Roman gladiators a tough time. Large hay bale walls, barbed wire crawls and under water passings are just a few of its obstacles. Strength and stamina were needed to succeed within the walls of the Colosseum, and it’s no different here. But don’t worry; the crowds are a lot nicer nowadays! www.gladi8or.co.uk

Well, to catch the yeti of course! The Leicestershire event, that offers a 5K, 10K and 20K race option, really does have participants chasing after a dressed up yeti. But, it is no easy challenge. So expect a tough (and fluffy) run! www.avalancherun.co.uk
