DAY LIGHT

SAV INGS

Flare R

Flare R Be louder. Finally, a daylight visible tail light that cuts through distractions to make every ride safer. With Flare R, you can be the biggest distraction on the road. With bursts of 65 Lumens, balanced optics, and optimized flash patterns, Flare R maximizes visibility both day and night. Powerful, compact, and rechargeable, Flare R is the first light to be designed from the ground up for daylight visibility. Why is a daylight visible light important? – 80% of cycling accidents occur during the day1 – 40% of US cycling fatalities hit from behind2 – studies show riders overestimate their visibility by 700%3

Reported Road Casualties Great Britain: 2013: Main Results”, Department for Transport, 2014 “Collisions Involving Cyclists on Britain's Roads: Establishing the Causes”, TRL Report PPR 445, 2009 2 Every Bicyclist Counts, League of American Bicyclists, May 2014 3 Wood, Tyrell, 2012 (Queensland University Technology and Clemson University) 1

Key points – daylight visible from over 2km – flash patterns capture driver’s attention – every ride is safer with the Flare R, day or night

Scott’s Trek Emonda SLR

First off, let’s set it straight from the beginning; buying a new bike when you have an pretty great bike already is an emotional decision. I went for a new bike this year for the same reason I drink craft beers, bathe regularly, read books and enjoy a fresh hair cut; a new bike tickles something inside that makes you feel good. Last year I was deep in the planning stages of one of our harder cycling trips we have undertaken. The concept of riding the Pyrenees from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic. As I researched and planned I quickly fell in love with the idea of this route as it shared the climbs of epic stages of the Vuelta and The Tour de France. With the photos and stories of these epics swimming in my head I read about the launch of Trek’s new line of bikes The Emonda.

The Emonda is the lightest range of bikes on the market. Perhaps the name comes from the French verb emonder, meaning to prune and trim away, it another clever word mix from Trek. My previous bike - the Trek Domane would climb the Pyrenees without issue but I was caught up in the lore of climbing. I perused the Trek website to check the bikes out like any normal person. I then ventured onto the Project 1 site where you can craft your own bike. I immediately saw the powder blue/ viper red combo and after years of riding more blasé colour bikes I was hooked. I sat at the computer and crafted a bike that would be a joy to ride around home and excel on trips. I chose the SLR frame as it is ridiculously light and available in powder blue/viper red.

On the Project 1 site you get to choose virtually everything so I was in heaven. I made the decision to go with the H2 geometry that would give me a longer head tube because at 47 I don’t bend like I used to. I chose 170mm cranks (quite short for a guy my size) as I have limited mobility in my right hip. I chose the shallow drop bars due to my hip and lower back. I matched the ergonomics of my geriatric machine with the do it all Shimano Duraace 9000 mechanical grouppo. The brakes are awesome, the shifting superb and yes it is light without sacrificing performance or longevity. To top it off I blessed the bike with Bontrager Aeolus D3 carbon clinchers. As light as any tubular but flats cost less than $10. So much for the details. I received the bike and Brayden built it for me. I made very few changes from what came in the box. I added a Specialized Romin saddle as they match my bottom nicely. I added a Stages crank that would measure power and a Garmin bike computer. Final weight with bottle, cages and pedals is well under 15lbs. So did it live up to my dreams? Yes. More than that is provided the impetus to realize some dreams. If I were going to ride a light bike I best not do it with as much weight extra around my midsection. At Christmas I gave myself a weight and fitness goal I had to reach before I would allow myself to ride the bike. By March 1st (just in the nick of time) I reached my goals. The bike stared at me for 3 months taunting me to eat properly and workout intelligently.

Its true test came with 2 weeks of riding in Mallorca Spain. An incredible testing ground for man and machine. I was incredibly impressed. The Trek Domane, my previous ride, is a powerful and exquisitely comfortable bike to ride. The Emonda proved it is a close second in comfort. Very little road noise is transferred to your hands and rear end. The Domane still wins when hitting harsh cracks like those on river road but the Emonda is plush yet ďŹ rm. The bike was incredibly stable on fast descents and handled the hard braking and cornering the many switch backs oered.

Was I faster on it? Yes in fact I was. Was it all the bike? No of course not. The journey the bike started was what made me climb faster. The new bike was the catalyst to realize the dream of riding in the Pyrenees. It taunted me to raise my level of ďŹ tness to do it justice

It provided some sort of peer pressure to eat well so it would be a less soft Scott astride it. Most of all I the powder blue colour makes me ride better because everybody knows powder blue and viper red are fast colours. - Murison - matching socks are fast too -

Well Jetboil has finally done it, the new Minimo has turned my head. If you are not familiar with the Jetboil system, then now is the time to come and have gander at what is available from this well proven brand. The stove/pot system has developed from a hard core climber’s essential piece of gear to the more user friendly weekend or day trip outing accessory. As before, the premise of the Jetboil system revolves around an uber efficient burner design that uses a flux ring near its source to accelerate cooking and boiling times. Now that cup of tea or coffee is less than five minutes away when you decide to stop for a snack or quick lunch. Giving way to the ideology of always being prepared, you can use this very compact stove for multiple stops along your journey or make a little extra if you bump into some friends on the ski trail.

a perfect, compact stove

Our new favourite, the Minimo ($142.95) now has a wider, larger pot that will prove more useful for larger quantities of whatever you choose to cook on the spot. The wider pot also proves useful as a mug or portable bowl due to it's plastic coated metal handles. This feature is super handy. Please do get a chance to come to Wild Rock and check out this latest model. It may be a terrific addition to your outings. - Moreno

Nogies Creek

We are always on the lookout for new places to explore. A relatively short drive from Peterborough will take you to Nogies Creek located near Bobcaygeon, which promises to be a great new paddling destination. The easiest put in is found at 36 and Bass Lake Rd, this part of Nogies Creek is a bit busier with motorized boat traffic but, a short drive up Bass Lake Road, about 4 km, a great put in is found on the right hand side. This put in is small and grassy with an easy slip in for your boat.

From the put in Nogies Creek is almost free of cottages and being located on a nature preserve offers very picturesque views and many little islands perfect for shore lunches. Spend the day paddling and a nearby Heron rookery may offer you a glimpse get a chance to see some wild life up close and personal. Nogies is a great, accessible day paddle that won’t disappoint. Check it out. - Moreno
