eason of Change A DECADE AND A HALF IN THE PRESENCE OF THE FORCE OF DAVE.
We at Wild Rock have been lucky enough to have enjoyed almost 20 years working with Dave Woodfine. As a grad student he worked with us part time as a paddling instructor, carpenter, sales person and general life force for Wild Rock. He grabbed everybody’s attention, as his intelligence and vast capacity for work is immediately recognized when you meet him. In the early days he juggled teaching at Trent, leading cycling trips, instructing courses at Madawaska Kanu Center, Phd work and part time work at Wild Rock, with enough energy left over to organize the best 80’s parties this side of…. Well, the 1980’s. Around the turn of the Millenia, Dave joined Wild Rock as a partner and together we launched the bicycle side of the business. In typical Dave fashion he did not just open a bike business he launched a bike and nordic ski force. Sitting in a retail store peddling (...pedaling) bicycles and skinny skis was just the appetizer. Dave organized the Kawartha Fall Colours Cycling Tour, helped with Shifting Gears, B!ke and took Kawartha Nordic from a little local classic ski club to Central Ontario’s leading nordic ski center. This is just the tip of the iceberg of his accomplishments. This Christmas will mark the end of an era for Wild Rock as Dave moves on to new challenges. Although Dave will no longer be a partner at Wild Rock he assured us he is committed to the community for at least the next season or two. We wish Dave the best with his next chapters. We are confident that they will involve more great works and accomplishments as the force we know as Dave just has a habit of getting stuff done! If you want to catch up with Dave this winter we suggest you wait until the snow flies then head up to the Kawatha Nordic Ski Club. You are likely to find him there ...going very quickly ...on very skinny skis.

Get fit, stay hea Young or old, staying or getting a little more fit will make your life longer and better.
If we don’t use it we lose it. This saying is extremely accurate for human fitness. It is even more important as we age. As we push to, or past 50, each year our VO2 Max (how much oxygen we can usefully take in) slowly drops by 7-10% per decade. This does not seem like much, but if you are sedentary (Avg. VO2 Max of 26-40 males & 20-31 females), and continue to be sedentary as you age, you soon have difficulty and run out of breath doing simple things like walking upstairs, tying your shoes, or cutting the lawn. Even if you are moderately active and have a higher VO2 Max you will suffer a decline of 3-7% per decade. This will still affect you, and as you age you will be able to do less and less. As active people age they tend towards longer, less intense bouts of exercise as their free time expands and their competitive nature and efforts wane. As we live longer and longer this decline has more of an effect in our later years. So what can we do? The easiest and most effective way to minimize the decrease and extend your active years is to introduce or re-introduce high intensity into your exercise. Those who continue racing or doing high intensity exercise have 1-2% loss per decade. This can be as easy as dropping 30 seconds to a couple of minutes of all out efforts in your next ride, ski, run, swim or walk. Even three 30 second sprints done twice a week will have a measurable effect on your respiratory system and your cholesterol levels. We are talking 3 minutes total hard effort a week. If you are already active and enjoy cycling Wild Rock has a cycling gym ($99 /year) and we have 4 workout sessions per week that include high intensity training.
