Fishing Report

By Kathy Algard Flounder fishing kicked in this past week at the Old Grounds and Reef Site 11, with some nice Fluke being caught. Nice Sea Bass have also been mixed in with the Fluke while fishing the Artificial Reefs and rough bottom at the Old Grounds. Back Bay Fluke fishing remains good with a few more keepers being caught this week and plenty of undersized throwbacks. Tom Lerro of Shawcrest weighed in a 5 pound 6 ounce Flounder measuring 24 inches caught on a live minnow while fishing near West Wildwood on his boat “ My Lil Shadow”. Striper fishing quieted down this week as water temperatures rose to mid summer levels. On the shark scene, it sure seemed dependent on who you spoke with on whether the shark fishing was good or not. Many boats reported multiple hook ups and catches although he average size of the sharks were on the smaller side. The Offshore Tuna trolling bite was hot this week with many 20 to 50 pound Yellowfin Tuna being caught. Crabby Jack gives the crabbing 4 Claws this week and says there were plenty of crabs and they were a much nicer size.

Useless Information Ed. note: Received an anonymous letter from one of our readers that is apropos to this Father’s Day Weekend.

A FATHER’S GIFTS TO HIS DAUGHTER In honor of Father’s Day, I thought I would share a little story about my Dad and some of the important things one can learn from their father. Since I was a little girl, my dad has taught me so much – more random things than you could imagine, especially when we were driving around running errands. There were always little tidbits of knowledge that he passed along – the kind of stuff that would help me win Jeopardy someday. Things like odd interstate numbers run north to south and even run east to west; gas prices change on certain days of the week; the Eisenhower Interstate system has long straight stretches that would allow us to land a plane had the airport runways ever been destroyed…but some of the most valuable lessons were that a girl should have tools and know how to use them.

Of the many tools, gadgets and other random items, including duct tape -- one can NEVER have enough since it fixes everything – most recently, my personal portable battery charger would have come in handy…had it been well, charged.

One morning, I was heading out for work, and my car wouldn’t start. Seemed like something simple – hopefully just the battery, or worst case, the starter. So, I called the dealer to set up an appointment to bring the car and arrange for the tow truck to come the next morning. Sadly my car was parked with the nose end in the garage so it was the only option…or so I thought at the time.

The nice tow truck guy gets there and tries to start it.

Nothing. Luckily, he thinks it is likely the battery and proceeds to jump it and see what happens. And she starts! Great, right? Well, yes. Means no major repairs, and under $1000 to fix her so I was happy. Except…..

I could have done that...just jumped it...easy enough. Tow truck guy says, “yep, you sure coulda if you had one of those portable chargeable jumper sets like the one I just used.” I looked across the garage and pointed and said to him, “Oh, you mean like the one on the shelf over there.” “Yep, a special gift from my DAD a few years ago, that I clearly should have had charged for situations just like this.” He said, “Yep, just like that one, they work really well and you would have saved me a trip and saved yourself the cost of me coming out here.”

Moral of the story – remember the things your dad teaches you – they all come in handy someday. Love you, Dad. Happy Father’s Day!

Some 25 years ago when the family would come to visit with Mom Mom for a few weeks each summer, Uries was a certain night out for dining. Plus they had a fabulous take out section in the day. Our children as the years passed never required a menu. Nikki ALWAYS had the fried flounder. Adam ALWAYS had the fried clams. The only thing the adults ALWAYS assured themselves of having was the clam chowder. It was SO good!

May I digress momentarily to note during our visits we always bought several quarts of this concoction from the take out store mentioned here. Whoops, almost starting over the bridge, but a quick recovery puts us right in a spacious parking lot. Much more room than I recall years ago, but can’t place what has been removed to allow for it. As we park and get out “Do you have the keys?”

“Yes dear.”

“Do you have your wallet?”

“Yes my love”. She knows me too well!

We are greeted by a very pleasant hostess who asks if anyone else will be joining us this evening. “No.” In short order we are escorted to a table on the outside patio looking right into the harbor. An almost full moon is appearing. Promptly our server, Morgan, arrives. She asks if we’d care for a beverage to start off with. Draft Landshark sure pleases me, and the lady goes for Bud Light. The atmosphere could not be better. Our drinks arrive, nice and cold!

“May we order some appetizers while further studying this vast menu?”

“Of course, what would you like?” Knowing she truly loves them I order clams on the half shell for Nance. An order of Crab Balls with Uries’ Remoulade Sauce sounds interesting to me. Did I mention the pleasant atmosphere? Yes I did, but it bears repeating. And here come the appetizers: the clams are perfect as I can tell by the look on

To digress again, we could just go through most appetizer menus and forget the main course — and we have once or twice. For the main course Nance orders broiled stuffed scallops with a baked potato and vegetable medley. I’m tempted by the flounder special for the evening but the Tuna Marie sounds interesting, with cole slaw and mac & cheese (it’s my dinner!). Atmosphere remains perfect! Morgan arrives with our dinners. I’m immediately told “these scallops are SO sweet, and my potato is just right and could I have some of your cole slaw that looks really good?” I love tuna. This tuna has been blackened (good thing) and topped with some nice size shrimp with an herb scampi sauce. Chef Robert cooked the tuna medium rare. After this preparation I now love tuna even more. And yes the mac & cheese was superb!

So we should be done, but Morgan who works on commission (not really) tempts us with dessert. The selection is a piece of peanut butter chocolate cake (nice and moist) which we share. On a future night we’ll be trying the chocolate chip bread pudding which sounds delicous.

A night out like this would be hard to plan. Atmosphere, bright almost full moon, perfect table, temperature just right, pleasant staff, cold libations, and great food. Everything aligned perfectly! Thanks to all for a wonderful night.

BTW Uries still has the take out section in season; also a very nice Gift Shop managed by a local (Helen Mitchell); and an arcade to keep children entertained.

The Girl Around Town

By Natalie Cooper My friend Maria was waiting for me at my house when I got home from work the other night.

“Let’s go out for a drink,” she said as she waited for me to unlock the front door and then 3115 Pacific walked Ave.,inWildwood • 609-522-2253 the house behind me.

The last thing I felt May like doing after a long, busy night of running around on Adult Movie Section my feet all night at work, serving and talking to people, was to go out for a drink and socialize some more. I was beat. Tired. I smelled of kitchen grease and gourmet seafood dishes. I had chocolate smudges on my hands leftover from the bread pudding we serve for dessert with the early bird dinners. My hair was a mess. My face was glossy.

And all I wanted to do was eat and take a shower.

“Come on, just one drink,” she said. “I’ll drive.”

There wasn’t much persuading to do with me. But there never really is with Maria. It’s always an adventure when I’m with her—a guaranteed good time. Been that way since high school, and I doubt it will ever changed. She’s always on the move, always up for adventures and always down to try new things. Aside from that, she can’t sit still for very long, so I knew the night would take us to a few different places. I hadn’t seen Maria in a week or two, so naturally I decided to go out for a drink with her.

We went to Coconut Cove, and I was excited that there was no line greeting us as we pulled up and parked alongside the joint. The parking ON SELECT TITLES lot had only a few WITH cars in COUPON it, and I figured tonight would be low-key—a chill, casual spot where we could sit and talk, relax and catch up on the recent events having occurred in both of our lives.

We did just that, deciding to settle at a table away from the crowded bar in the corner, by the bay. She talked as I sipped. I talked as she sipped.

And before I knew it, we were finished our first round of drinks.

We sat for a while after that with no drinks at all, and Maria noticed a change in me. Sitting by the bay, looking out over the island, watching the moon reflect light out onto the water had changed my perspective for the night. Who wouldn’t be relaxed?

“You feeling better now?” she asked me.

I felt like a million bucks.

“It’s kind of dead here,” I said back. “Let’s go somewhere else.”

“Cape May it is.”

We got back in her car and drove through the islands to get to Cape May. We listened to some new songs on her iPod. We sang at the top of our lungs—screamed, really. Then an old jam came on next on her shuffle. The strum of the guitar from “The Long Way Around” by the Dixie Chicks echoed through the speakers.

It was our favorite song back in high school, and we’d listen to it for hours as we drove around in her car, going nowhere in particular. Pretty much like that night. It was our favorite thing to do together—drive around in her car. We hadn’t done it in a while, and we both knew it.

So we decided to skip going out to a bar in Cape May to continue the harmless fun we were having simply by listening to music and driving around the islands.

It turned out to be a good night. We cruised around Cape May, and as Maria drove, I looked out the window at all the old buildings, all the old places where we used to hang out when we were younger. It brought back memories. My mind wandered and raced when we would stop at a red light, and I’d see another spot. A trip down memory lane, I’d like to call it. With a friend who was there with me for all of it. Doing what we were doing tonight—setting out to drive nowhere in particular. But the simple fact that we set out at all was enough for us. As Maria likes to quote, “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.”
