Two campers are hiking in the woods when one is bitten on the rear end by a rattlesnake. “I’ll go into town for a doctor,” the other says. He runs ten miles to a small town and finds the town’s only doctor, who is delivering a baby. “I can’t leave,” the doctor says.

Bon-fire in North Wildwood

“But here’s what to do: Take a knife, cut a little X where the bite is, suck out the poison and spit it on the ground.” The guy ruins back to his friend, who is in agony. “What did the doctor say?” the victim asks. “He says you’re gonna die.”

Dear Tourist BY

Chef Vince Chiarella - Owner

HANNA LOMONACO Leaves are beginning to turn into colorful autumn palette, it rains often and we can’t go outside without a jacket most days… Thanksgiving’s well on its way and all the remnants of the busy sunny season at the Jersey shore are officially over. The summer is long gone and with it so are you, dear tourist. But why would you still be here in Wildwood? What is there to do in Cape May County in the winter, you ask. There is plenty! True, you might not be able to get a sunburn tanning on the beach all day long or experience an adrenalin rush trying to beat the crowd to one of the famous island eateries or bars, but guess what?! The beach is still here and it is as beautiful as ever in late fall and winter and you might be surprised to find out, but yes, most of the restaurants are also open and you can even get a table without weeks-in-advance reservation! It is a true pleasure of the locals to take casual strolls on the beach in quiet off-season. Large dark-blue waves crash heavily on the sand and white bubbly foam is carried by the surge of the water far enough into the shore to chase after leisurely wandering around seagulls. With every rolling wave that comes close, your senses are bathed in a clear scent of the all encompassing ocean. This scent and the air are so clean and delicious that you can’t help, but inhale a lungsfull every time you take a breath. On a sunny day you can see as far into the crystal clarity of the ocean’s glide as you sight permits and watch the high winter sun play in the tips of the giant waves forming on the horizon. South Jersey summer has beautiful beaches, true, but in winter time our ocean is truly majestic in its powerful, yet tranquil splendor. Take your friend, your spouse, your whole family, your dog or just go alone and experience a whole different dimension of Wildwood beaches while reconnecting with soothing nature. And afterward you can relax in one of the cozy restaurants and get all warm and toasty while enjoying your mouthwatering lunch or an early dinner. Some dining rooms even have a fireplace that perhaps you didn’t even notice in the summer, but in the winter it adds an unparalleled ambiance to your dining experience. And I guess it wouldn’t come to you as a surprise that many places have special winter menus and reduced pricing and you can feed your whole family for basically half of what you would normally spend on a dinner out in the summer. So come down and partake in our beautiful, quiet, Cape May County quality time. Stay tuned for tips on where to get the best meal at the best price in our issues to come and remember the timeless words of a nineteenth – early twentieth century American naturalist and activist John Muir: “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul Yosemite). 24alike” | (The WildwoodMag.com

A guy meets a hooker in a bar. She says, “This is your lucky night. I’ve got a special game for you. I’ll do absolutely anything you want for $300, as long as you can say it in three words.” The guy replies, “Hey, why not?” He pull his wallet out of his pocket, and one at a time lays three hundred-dollar bills on the bar, and says, slowly: “Paint...my... house.”

Useless Information REMEMBERING SAM FINOCCHIARO Many, many years ago (1961 to be precise), my parents had a beach grille at 15th and the Beach in North Wildwood (right next to the lifeguard station). I worked it, my brother Wayne and sister Ruth worked it, and just about every cousin we had worked the beach grille at some point in their lives. A couple of reflections on that beach grille include the delivery drivers for the products we sold. Jim’s Ice with the giant blocks of ice (before ice machines were invented), Fred Grosse (my 7th grade gym teacher at Margaret Mace) delivering his coke products, Alva Karl deliverying cigarettes and candy from Callaghans, and then there was Sam Finiacaro delivering rolls from the Marine Italian Bakery in Wildwood. Sam and Frank were partners during the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Both great guys. We saw Sam everyday during the summer and he was always the same . . . upbeat and always a smile. The thing about Sam was that he never aged . . . he looked the same to me when I was 17 as he did when I was 47. Maybe he aged young and never got any older looking or maybe he just aged very well. Sam passed away this week and reading his obit brought back a lot of good memories. Who could forget those great Italian rolls and terrific pastries. The bakery is now one of the strangest buildings in Wildwood (on the SW corner of Taylor and NJ Aves.), a building looking for direction. When I started my Junior year in high school, Sam’s brother Tony moved up to Wildwood from Florida. Tony was a good guy and a pretty good basketball player. The thing with Tony was . . . he came into town with a splash driving a beautiful 1958 Olds (or chevy) convertible in mint condition. That car was the envy of envy of every guy in high school . . . and I’m thinking this guy’s gonna get all the girls. Pretty much how it happened. Tony also worked at the bakery until he became allergic to yeast which ended his baking career. The memories linger . . . the beach grille, the rolls, the blocks of ice . . . but especially that time . . . the early sixties, cruising Pacific Ave. in that beautiful 1958 Olds convertible turning the heads of all the girls walking the avenue. Sam, we’re gonna miss you.

Marriage should be a duet - when one sings, the other claps. Joe Murray

UMPIRE TRAINING:

Sometimes my friends ask me how I became an umpire. I tell them that I went to an informational meeting for prospective umpires. I went up to a veteran umpire, and asked him to give me one piece of advice about umpiring. He said the most important thing about umpiring is communication. So, taking this advice, I enrolled in a communication course at a local community college The professor was a strange old fellow. He told us that our first assignment was to put 10 marbles in our mouth and then give a speech. This would force us to concentrate on speaking clearly and carefully. After we completed that assignment, we would take one marble out of our mouth for the next assignment. The process continued. When I lost all my marbles, I was ready to umpire! Remember the twenty extra years you added to your life through clean, healthy living? Well, these are them.
