Sam’s vs Mack’s

Even though I’ve only been in Wildwood for a few weeks now, I consider myself a native. I have familiarized myself with the beaches and the boardwalk, and I feel that I know everything there is to know about this town. One thing that I have heard about repeatedly is the argument over who has the best boardwalk pizza. It always comes down to two well-established pizza parlors: Sam’s and Mack’s. So I decided to try them both and decide for myself which one is truly the best. I attempted to have lunch at both of these supposed great pizza parlors on three seperate occasions: November 2nd, November 5th and November 10th. On all three occasions I arrived hungry only to ﬁnd that both Sam’s and Mack’s had decided not to open that day. What kind of eating establishment doesn’t open at lunch time? What’s really going on here? Time to investigate the truth. I began asking myself the tough questions: Who runs these establishments? Why would neither owner have the stores open by lunch? Could there be two owners that don’t care? Could this be a coincidence? I think not. Suddenly, it was clear to me. This is the work of one individual. That’s right, I believe Sam’s and Mack’s are both owned by the same person. Think about it...those italians are very superstitious. That explains why you can take the letters c and k out of Mack’s and re-arrange the remaining letters to make the word Sam. Maybe the “ck” has some reference to Calvin Klein. Could Calvin own both of these establishments? I don’t know yet but I will continue to investigate and keep you informed.

Useless Information LINGERING MEMORIES OF JOE FRAZIER Joe Frazier passed away last week and it drummed a bunch of memories about him and Muhammad Ali with their three fights, the most prominent being the “Thrilla in Manilla”. I followed Muhammad Ali throughout his career starting with his championship fight with Sonny Liston at Madison Square Garden in New York. Ali was then Cassius Clay from Louisville, KY, and, at that time, the most outrageous character in all of sports. He would rant and rave (I float like a butterfly and sting like a bee!!) about his opponents, reporters (I am the Greatest) like Howard Cossell, etc. He was the greatest fighter of all time, and his first loss was to Joe Frazier again at Madison Square Garden where Frazier and Ali fought a dazzling bout with Frazier knocking down Ali in the 15th round to earn a unanimous decision. It was a controversial time for Ali who was stripped of his heavyweight crown by not reporting for active duty during Viet Nam (I

don’t know those people, they’re not my enemy). When he met Frazier in New York, Ali hadn’t boxed in over 3 years, his boxing skills obviously rusty. I always thought that Joe Frazier (as great as he was) was no match for a younger Ali, the most dazzling fighter I had ever seen. That’s a debate that will go on forever. Anyway, Joe Frazier has a lot of local connections. He used to come into the Top of the Marq with Denise Menz at his side, and he was quite the gentleman, always a smile, always willing to sign autographs, and generally an all around great guy. I worked the front desk at the Marquis de Lafayette Hotel (I used to call it the Bottom of the Marq) and when Joe came in I always took a trip to the Top of the Marq to see Frazier’s star power. He was also good friends with Bob Menz who owned the hotel and nobody could work the crowd better than Bob Menz especially when Joe Frazier was in the house. My brother Wayne played piano there forever, and whenever Joe Frazier came in he would always do his “right on” immitation of Howard Cossell’s Down Goes Frazier, Down Goes Frazier. Wayne could immitate anyone but he did Cossell especially well. I used to ask people coming down from the “Top” if they liked the piano player. Everyone always said, “Oh, he’s great.”. One time these two old ladies came by and I asked them the same question, and they said, “He’s terrible!” I was shocked and told them that most people enjoyed his music. They said, “Oh, he plays great, but he’s too loud!”. They were sitting right next to the amp. Someone’s passing always dredges up a lot of memories and Joe Frazier’s passing brought out a lot of memories of my times at the Marquis. The Menz’s were a great family to work for (if they could tolerate me, they could tolerate anyone), and I have nothing but great memories of my time there. The Top of the Marq was one of a kind, a great place for mature people to go dining and dancing on a Saturday night. It’s gone now, but the memories linger.

I don’t mind what language an opera is sung in so long as it is the language I don’t understand.

GRADUATION SPEECH NOTES When my son graduated from high school, he had to give a speech. He began by reading from his prepared text. “I want to talk about my mother and the wonderful influence she has had on my life.” he told the audience. “She is a shining example of parenthood, and I love her more than words could ever do justice.” At this point he seemd to struggle for words. After a pause he looked up with a sly grin and said, “It’s really hard to read my mom’s handwriting.”
