Useless Information REMEMBERING BOB MENZ Met Bob Menz in 1987 when I was looking for a job and he was looking for someone to do his Victorian Cape May Times newspaper which was a publication/rate sheet for the Marquis de Lafayette hotel and the Inn of Cape May. I never did do the paper, but I did rent a lot of rooms in the 10 or 11 years I worked for him. He would walk past the front desk and ask if I had any rooms left and I responded that I’ll check the computer. He would always say, “A good salesman knows his inventory.” After hearing that a few times, I would start making up numbers. I eventually did produce the Victorian Cape May Times AFTER I stopped working at the hotel. Although he was a Wildwood guy at heart (remember Menz’s Food Distributors) somehow he wound up in Cape May as the owner of the aforementioned hotels. He was what I call a Wildwood character, a guy everyone liked and admired, in the same mold of other Wildwood characters like Scoop Taylor, Pat Ward, Bill Osborne, etc. . . . all great guys and local icons. I had experience working motels in Wildwood, but the Marquis de Lafayette was a REAL hotel, back then the best Cape May had to offer, and working for the Menz Family (it was TRULY a family run operation) were the best years I ever had and I’m grateful that Bob Menz gave me the chance. The Menz family have always treated their employees with great respect and loyalty and they are rewarded in kind. The Top of the Marq was a restaurant on the 6th floor of the hotel and it was Bob’s pride and joy. He could work a room like no one else, always had a quick joke or a pat on the back for those he knew and he knew most of the people that would come to dine and dance. The Top of the Marq was the place to go back then, an adult place where older couples could go out, have a few drinks and dance the night away. Bob Menz was the patriarch of a great family and his passing will be felt by both the Wildwood and the Cape May communities. He will be missed by all who knew him. Services will be next Thurs., Sept. 13 at the Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 702 Seashore Road, Cape May, NY 08204. Phone 609-884-3574. Visitation from 11to 12:30; service at 12:30.

Movie Reviews Based on the more imaginatively titled book The Wettest County in the World, this film tells the true story of the Bondurant brothers, who ran a bootlegging business in the Virginia backwoods. Hillcoat shoots it like a brutal neo-Western. And it’s utterly riveting. It’s 1931, and as the Bondurant brothers build their moonshine business, youngest brother Jack (LaBeouf ) wants to be more involved. Big brother Forrest (Hardy) would rather keep him out of it, while Howard (Clarke) just goes with the flow. As Jack secretly teams up with mechanical whiz Cricket (DeHaan) to ramp up production, the slimy city-slicker Agent Rakes (Pearce) arrives to hunt down bootleggers in the area. Soon the brothers are running a delicate balance, dodging Rakes and his goons while they keep mobster Banner (Oldman) supplied with hooch. Undercutting this increasingly nasty male-dominated story are two women: Maggie (Chastain) is a barmaid with a shady past who finds herself drawn to the monosyllabic Forrest, while Bertha (Wasikowska) is the local preacher’s daughter who rebels by encouraging Jack’s crush. Both of these side-plots develop with real delicacy, even as they intersect with the film’s most horrific moments. Quite a few scenes are so fiercely violent that they’re hard to watch. The plot’s layers keep us gripped to a tale in which the police are snarling villains and the criminals are likeable and loyal. Hardy is magnetic as a man who is hard as nails on the surface, but has a deeply hidden vein of compassion and mischief. Chastain has some extremely powerful moments of her own, while Oldman is also particularly good in a small role that bristles with energy. And Pearce gets to chomp merrily on the scenery (and wear the film’s most ridiculous costumes and hair). Hillcoat’s direction and Cave’s script (Cave also composed the gorgeous score with Warren Ellis) keep everything grounded in earthy realism, drawing on the almost mythical settings to add to film’s central theme that these brothers are creating a legend about themselves that might only be partially true. This theme grows through a series of capers, raids and shootouts that both terrify and empower the locals who spread the gossip. Like them, we prefer to believe the myth.

Fishing Report By Cathy Algard Flounder fishing remains good. Reef Site 11 was best this past week, however there were quite a few nice Flounder caught 1-2 miles outside Cape May Inlet. Weakfish were around this week in great numbers. Bob Fritz reported excellent Weakfishing in the Bug Light area of the Delaware Bay. The limit is only one fish, but it’s great to see them around again. Lori Farina and Lou Santoro had 5 keeper Flounder to 23.5 inches while fishing on Lou’s boat “Late Bite” at Reef Site 11. Tsunami Pro Ball Jigs tipped with Gulp! were producing well for Lori and Lou. RT Dunne checked in with a 4 pound 9 ounce Flounder caught on Squid at the Wildwood Reef and a 2 pound 9 ounce Flounder for angler Rob Luzzi while fishing on the Dunne Dreamin’ out of Wildwood, NJ. The back bays are holding Flounder, Weakfish, small bluefish, and the occaisional Striper. Try around the lights at night for nice Weakfish and Striped Bass. Mirr-o-Lures are working well for the Stripers and the Weakies. Kingfish and small Snapper Blues are still being caught off the beach using Fishbites and AquaClear Kingfish rigs. Crabby Jack gives the crabbing 3.5 Claws this week. On the offshore scene, things are starting to heat up again with plenty of White Marlin. Tuna, Dolphin and Wahoo are also being reported. Kim McCormick had a Yellowfin Tuna that weighed in at 46 pounds on her 46th Birthday. The fish was caught at the 19 Fathom Lump. Happy Birthday, Kim! Joe Gillen and crew of the Y-Know out of Wildwood, NJ had a 48 pound Wahoo while trolling around the 30 Fathom Line. Frank Scirrotto of Cherry Hill, NJ had a 40 inch Mahi-Mahi while trolling at the East Lump on his boat Stinky Fingers.

RT Dunne and Rob Luzzi of Collegeville, PA had a nice catch of Flounder up to 4 1/2 pounds while fishing at the Wildwood Reef on the Dunne Dreamin’ out of Wildwood, NJ.

Kim McCormick of Pottstown, PA landed a 46 pound Yellowfin Tuna for her 46th Birthday while fishing with her family at the 19 Fathom Lump. Happy Birthday, Kim!
