Local News At a board meeting on Sept. 24th, city officials announced various plans to improve Wildwood and potentially revitalize Pacific Avenue. The meeting, headed by Commissioner Pete Byron, city planner Stuart Wiser and municipal accountant Robert Swartz was attended by more than 200 local residents. “For such a long time, Wildwood has been down. I think it’s time we move forward. This administration is finally coming up with ideas to move Wildwood forward,” said Byron. One of the main talking points of the night was the plan to purchase a vacant section of land on Pacific Avenue to construct an entertainment venue with a year-round, synthetic ice rink and amphitheater. “The skating rink is just an idea,” said Byron. “We need to figure out a way to bring excitement back to Pacific Avenue.” The city is hoping that the purchase of the land on Pacific Avenue will revitalize the downtown area. While downtown Pacific Avenue has been slowly coming back to life, it still has not reached it’s max potential. Concerns were voiced on wether the purchase of land will cost the taxpayers money. According to Byron, the land would cost taxpayers nothing since the city would be obtaining money from the Cape May County Open Space Commission for its purchase. To date, the city has never used Open Space funding to purchase land. “We have opportunity to take advantage of that,” said the commissioner. “We can’t miss out on that opportunity.” Plans are also being made to utilize some of the extra space on Wildwood’s beaches. Beach cabanas, surf beaches, fitness beaches, beach bars, and a beach bike lane that would allow riders 24-hour access with their bikes were all discussed at the meeting. Many beaches around the country are set up in a similar way, namely beaches in California. “We all know we have this extremely wide beach,” said Wiser. “But right now the only thing people do on the beach is bathing and sunning. And while that’s great, they don’t have to do that in Wildwood. They can do that anywhere. Instead of having the beach carpeted with swimmers and sun worshipers, the proposed plans would generate a more “fun” environment for residents and tourists while producing revenue.” While Wildwood may have free beaches, it cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands to maintain those beaches every year. Many of the residents voiced their praise and their concerns during the meeting. While these ideas are still in early stages, the city is hoping to raise revenue in the city through these plans. John Sheppard, owner of the newly opened Cattle and Clover Steak House on Pacific Avenue, said “We need something. It’s the best idea I’ve heard. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. Unless someone comes up with a better idea, I say go with this.”

Useless Information SYNTHETIC ICE . . . HMMMM On the surface, no pun intended, synthetic ice seems like a wacky idea . . . but hey, who thought we could actually get an airplane in the air. Commissioner of Finance Pete Byron’s idea of bringing an synthetic ice rink to downtown Wildwood seems like an idea that might actually work. I mean, I can’t skate on regular ice let alone on synthetic ice, but I sure would go see it . . . especially if it had other entertainment surrounding it.
There have been a bunch of articles about the proposed synthetic ice rink and not one had an actual photo of a rink nor did the articles describe actually what synthetic ice is. So here goes, “Present-day synthetic ice, usually ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene or a high density polyethylene (HDPE) and sometimes sprayed with friction-reducing solution or wax, fits together like a jigsaw puzzle. Manufacturers claim the more you skate on it, the better the surface gets. It is suitable for all ice activities, and you can use normal skates. In appearance, it looks like a giant plastic cutting board.” Got that? Thought so. But apparently it feels just like ice when you’re skating on it, although they say it takes about 15% more effort than regular ice. I can see all you crazy Flyers fans jumping up and down with “we could bring the Flyers in to play on it. Bring on the Devils.” With that in mind, we are actually getting 2 sports for the price of one. Boxing and skating. What’s the old line . . . “I went to a boxing match and a hockey game broke out.” Then we could try ice basketball . . . now that would be fun. All kidding aside, I think we should lend our support to Commissioner Byron in his efforts to do something about the downtown. They’re already improved the downtown just by tearing down the old buildings leaving empty lots that are a lot better to look at than dilapidated buildings. So go for it Pete! I can still take you one on one . . . either on the blacktop or on the ice.
Marriage is give and take. You’d better give it to her or she’ll take it anyway. Joey AdAms
OLD HABITS . . . Several elderly nuns were in their second floor convent one night when a fire broke out. They took their habits off, tied them together to make a rope, and climbed out the window. After they were safely on the ground and out of the building, a news reporter came over to one of the nuns and said to her, “Weren’t you afraid that the habits could have ripped or broken since they are old?” The nun replied, “Nah. Don’t you know old habits are hard to break.” GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT GROWING OLD • Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional. • Forget the health food. I need all the preservatives I can get. • When you fall down, you wonder what else you can do while you’re down there. • You’re getting old when you get the same sensation from a rocking chair that you once got from a roller coaster. • It’s frustrating when you know all the answers but nobody bothers to ask you the questions. • Time may be a great healer, but it’s a lousy beautician. • Wisdom comes with age, but sometimes age comes alone.
If life is a waste of time, And time is a waste of life, Then let’s all get wasted together And have the time of our lives. YOU MIGHT BE A REDNECK IF . . . • You think the stockmarket has a fence. • You’ve been involved in a custody battle over a hunting dog. • Your grandpa died and left everything to his widow. • Problem is she can’t touch a thing till she’s fourteen. • You think the last four words of the National Anthem are “Gentleman, start your engines.” • Fifth grade was the best six years of your life. • There were dogs in the church on your wedding day.

Movie Reviews What’s the limit on the amount of fear we can responsibly allow a child to experience? Roald Dahl thought nothing of inflicting child-eating giants and malevolent witches on his junior readership; in more recent years, the makers of Monster House and Coraline have threatened their protagonists with man-eating houses and forcible eyeremoval respectively. Do we owe the little ‘uns some credit for being able to withstand more horror than we think? ParaNorman tackles the issue head-on, introducing us to the titular tyke Norman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who loves watching zombie movies and can communicate with the dead. It’s this latter ability that makes life difficult for him: his family are far from understanding (shades of Dahl again), and he’s bullied at school by the thuggish Alvin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). Things get worse when he is tasked with protecting his town from a centuries-old curse involving zombies and a vengeful witch. The film’s stop-motion style is highly evocative of the aforementioned Coraline – not surprising, considering writer/co-director Chris Butler cut his teeth storyboarding the Neil Gaiman adaptation. Like Coraline, ParaNorman has its fair share of laughs to balance out the terror – Norman’s best pal Neil (Tucker Albrizzi) and Neil’s big brother Mitch (Casey Affleck) are particular highlights. For those in the audience old enough to notice, there are some subtle nods to Halloween and Friday the 13th, and Jon Brion’s score has a dash of John Carpenter synths mixed in as well. In short, it’s a kids’ film horror fans can sink their teeth into – but with several scenes of death, reanimated corpses and a genuinely terrifying witch, it might be worth making sure your kiddlywink has the fortitude to withstand it.

Fishing Report By Cathy Algard Reports of good Fluke Fishing came from Flounder Alley up in the Delaware Bay near Miah Maul early in the week and seemed to slow down as the week progressed. There are still some Flounder being caught at the Artificial Reefs and the Old Grounds, but the best of it seems to be at the offshore wrecks in 120 to 150 feet of water. Sea Bass opens again this weekend. Offshore, some good catches of Wahoo and White Marlin are being reported from the Wilmington and Baltimore Canyons. Small Stripers and Snapper Blues are being caught along the beachfront. In the backbays, small Stripers and Weakfish are still being reported. Crabby Jack gives the crabbing 3.5 out of 5 Claws this week.
