I’m sure that if I made reservations at any restaurant in Indianapolis, the maitre d’ would be disappointed when I showed up. Just like the commercial where an old guy shows up with the name Michael Jordan. When we were out in Indiana it didn’t matter where we went, everyone knew my son. They’d point, whisper or just come over for an autograph. Pretty cool. The Pacers had a terrific season under first year head coach Frank Vogel, 42 and 24. Outstanding by NBA standards, and he came in third for Coach of the Year which is definitely cool. Should have been first if it were based on team achievement, but there’s a lot of politics involved and I guess you just have to pay your dues. Anyway, a terrific year nontheless. That being said, it would be all for naught if the Pacers didn’t advance in the first round of the playoffs. Last year the Pacers made the playoffs as an eight seed (last seed), and they had to play a very powerful Bulls team, so they weren’t expected to do much. Turns out they played really well even though they lost. This year, they were the 3rd seed and were expected to win easily over the Orlando Magic who were playing without their star center Dwight Howard, and what happened? They lost the first game of the series. I’m thinking, “Oh, no, this can’t be happening!” And it didn’t. The Pacers finished off the Magic last night in a terrific basketball game that went back and forth until about 7 minutes left when the Pacers just went off on a streak and won by 18 pts. The score doesn’t indicate how close the game was played. Most basketball fans pretty much think the NBA is run and gun, no defense, lots of dunks and three pointers. Couldn’t be farther from the truth. Every play is orchestrated and designed to take advantage of the other teams weakness. Every play! There is so much preparation that goes into each game, finding the other teams weaknesses, the other players weaknesses and tendencies, etc. Hours and hours of watching video. Sort of like a chess match. So, congratulations to the other Frank Vogel for winning his first playoff round. It’s so hard to finish off a team and beat them 4 games in a row. I always tell Frank, “You don’t give me any credit for teaching you everything you know about basketball.” His response, “Dad, you taught me everything YOU know about basketball.” Well said.
