PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Congratulations to The American Legion Department Commander Bob Shappell and The Sons of the TERESA ISENSEE American LeDepartment President gion Department Detachment Commander Gary Lubich, I know we will work well together to grow our Wisconsin American Legion Family. What an honor for myself and my family to be elected as the Department of Wisconsin President. Thank you for your support and trust and I hope to meet many of you on my travels throughout the Department – at district conferences, unit meetings, Fall Forum, and the Concert Tours. My love of music, singing and dancing helped me to choose my theme this year of “Raise Your Voice in Song for Our Veterans,” and my special project is Music Therapy at Veterans facilities and local Creative Arts Festival competitions. Research shows that the right tunes can promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance memory, improve communication, and pro-

mote physical rehabilitation. Fall Forum will be held Friday September 19th and Saturday September 20th in Eau Claire at The Plaza Hotel. I’m excited about the schedule for this year! There will be two Membership and Leadership Workshops – on Friday evening at 7:45 pm and a repeat on Saturday (Leadership at 12:45 pm and Membership at 2:45 pm). Don’t miss the Executive Board meeting and the general session which will begin at 5:30pm. There will be a choir of voices, executive business, membership report, and our NEC Joyce Endres will announce the awards from National Convention. Our honored guest for the weekend will be Central Division National Vice President Laura Mosby. Please join us in welcoming CDNVP Laura to Wisconsin, a meet and greet will be held during the Paper Fair on Friday at 8:15 pm. Concert Tours (informational workshops) – We are taking the show on the road, so stop out to see us and gather information on our programs, meet our Department officers and chairmen, maybe do a little singing and dancing, and share stories of this great organization. The Tours are scheduled for 9/27/14 in Fond du Lac, 10/04/14

in Waunakee, 10/18/14 in Union Grove, and 10/25/14 in Thorp. Watch the monthly unit mailings, the Wisconsin, and the department website for registration forms and more information. Everyone is encouraged to attend any concert tour that fits in your schedule. National President Janet Jefford will be visiting the Department of Wisconsin from October 23 through October 25 and then staying in Milwaukee for the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. Watch for more information on the events during her visit. Have you paid your 2015 Auxiliary dues? Don’t wait to get your notice from national – PAY IT TODAY! Our first 100% Unit is Franklin Unit 192 in District 4. They are in the November 22nd “We’ve Only Just Begun” drawing for a chance at one of five $100 awards. Is your unit next? All units that reach or exceed goal by November 21, 2014 will be entered into the drawing. I look forward to a wonderful year and hope to see you at our Concert Tours. Thank you for serving our Veterans, our Military, their families, and our communities, in Service Not Self for the American Legion Family.

MEMBERSHIP Raising Our Voices in Song through Membership Joan Chwala, Dept. Chairman Email: Ctr68552@centurytel.net H: 715-668-5661 The Department President’s theme can be a light hearted way to approach the serious work of caring for veterans, their families, our troops, and our communities. This year in the Department of Wisconsin, we are going to “Raise Our Voices in Song” as we commit ourselves to service through the programs of the American Legion Auxiliary. President Teresa Isensee will be our “Maestro” as she combines your program work into beautiful medleys. What fun is a theme without related contests and competitions? Our target dates will have special music related titles which units will earn by achieving 100% or more of goal. But what is the reward for hard working unit members? As individuals, you can earn awards and prize money for yourself by recruiting new Auxiliary members. Any member who recruits ten junior and/or senior

members will receive $10 from Department (and a keychain as well as a chance to win $100 from National) for their efforts. If you sign up one senior member or two junior members, you can send for a Clef Sign Pin and earn a “One in a Million” button as a reward. National and Department forms must be submitted by unit membership chairmen to qualify for these awards. Learn about these and all the other opportunities by visiting the Department website or talking to your own unit membership chairman. Do you know a female veteran who is eligible to join the American Legion Auxiliary? This is the year to ask her to join. Both National and Department are waiving

their portions of the 2015 membership dues as a “thank you” gift to our women veterans. Sign her up and have your unit send in the documentation and you have just earned your first reward. Why not renew your membership at your next meeting? Or better yet, send your dues today. Have you considered purchasing a Paid Up for Life membership? Let’s sing “On Wisconsin” as we all become the “One in a Million” that makes us so proud of our Auxiliary membership! Membership Team: Joan Chwala, Chairman Bonnie Jakubczyk, UD&R Mary Petrie, UD&R Morgan Johnsen, Junior Member

Ecclesiastes 3:3 To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. The summer season is in full swing as marked by our state convention which was held in July. Thank you for your vote of confidence and it is my fervent prayer that as your Department Chaplain this coming year, I will be a source of uplifting spiritual guidance. As we approach the dog days of summer, let us ever be mindful of those whose service we honor with our membership. July 27th was the 61st anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. Remember those who served during this conflict with special prayers and all those currently serving in harms way. PRAYER Almighty God, We stand before you in supplication, asking Your divine mercy and protection, to envelop with Your invincible armor, all those serving in our armed forces. Give them courage and strength against all enemies, both spiritual and physical, and hasten their safe journey back to their homes and families. If it be Your Holy Will that they be gathered to Your bosom, let their journey to Your everlasting arms be swift and painless, where they may stand in honor and glory, praising You for all eternity. Amen. MUSIC I enjoy listening to contemporary music and will periodically share with you some of my favorite songs of worship. This song is taken from a variety of familiar verses many of you may recognize. “How Sweet the Sound” Words and music by Ben Calhoun and Josh Calhoun Yea, though I walk through the valley I know that You are always right beside me And I will fear no evil You’re my rock And my strength You comfort me Amazing grace how sweet the sound I hear You singing over me I once was lost but now I’m found And it’s beautiful Amazing grace how sweet the sound It covers every part of me My soul is silent I am found And it’s a beautiful sound You carry me through the waters Where Your peace clears away all my sorrow And nothing can separate us from Your love Oh, Your love it will always be You were healing in the pain You were shelter in the storm Hallelujah, You restore my soul. Until next month, Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God. As we continue “Raising our voices in song for our veterans.”

GREETINGS FROM HEADQUARTERS Bonnie Dorniak Executive Secretary/Treasurer Ph: (608) 745-0124 Email: deptsec@amlegionauxwi.org The national organization has proposed new rates for Paid Up For Life (PUFL) membership, effective September 1, 2014. Applications are available from Deptartment Headquarters or can be printed from the national website. Congratulations to Joyce Endres on a fantastic year as Department President. Joyce’s year wrapped up with the 94th Annual ALA Convention at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton. I wish to acknowledge the Auxiliary staff, Angie Chappell and the Legion Headquarters staff, the Legion Family of Appleton #38, and the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel for making this event successful. Veteran Jeff McNeil opened the convention with the national anthem and guest speakers from Zablocki VAMC promoted the 2015 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival in Milwaukee. Other highlights

of the convention included Governor Scott Walker, Major General Donald Dunbar, WDVA Secretary John Scocos, Honored PDP Loretta Shellman, Unit Member of the Year Lynn Keen of Wausau Unit 10 and 2014 ALA Badger Girls State Governor Madilyn Heinke. Wisconsin was also proud to endorse PDP Diane Duscheck for National President in 2017-2018! Although many units are worthy of recognition, Joyce Endres presented 20132014 Department President’s Awards for Excellence to the units listed on page A3 based on the accomplishments documented in their Unit Year-End Reports. Fifth District was also recognized as the only district to exceed 100% in membership. The convention closed with the installation of new district and department officers. President Teresa Isensee and Commander Bob Shappell challenged each other to see who can achieve the highest percentage of membership by Valentine’s Day. Let’s work hard so we can enjoy the Commander’s song and dance routine next

year at convention – again hosted by the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel from July 1619, 2015. 2015 membership cards have been mailed to Unit Membership Chairmen. Any Unit that has not received a packet should contact Andrea Stoltz at department headquarters immediately. The national organization will issue renewal notices in mid-September. The 2014 Fall Informational Forum is September 19-20 at The Plaza Hotel in Eau Claire. Registration and hotel reservations are due by September 2nd. Details were in the monthly unit mailing for June meetings and are posted on the department website. I would like to thank Joyce Endres, her officers and chairmen for the privilege of working with them this past year. I also acknowledge PDC Ken Rynes, SAL PDC Dan Daily, and Legion Riders President Bob Lloyd for their support of the Auxiliary and the headquarters staff. I look forward to an equally successful year ahead with the newly elected Legion Family officers.

ALA BADGER GIRLS STATE Dee Woolf, Executive Director Email: dwoolf@centurytel.net American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State Money Saving Offer – At the 2014 American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State (ALABGS) spring meeting the committee discussed and passed a motion to raise the 2015 delegate reservation fee from $240.00 to $250.00. In conjunction with this increase the ALABGS Committee has set up an early bird offer. To qualify, all delegate reservation fees postmarked by December 15, 2014 will receive an early bird discount. A $25.00 credit voucher will be mailed out after the 2015 ALABGS session is completed. The credit must be applied to the 2016 ALABGS session reservation fee. The ALABGS unit packet detailing this information will be available at the Fall Informational Forum held in Eau Claire, September 19 & 20. ALABGS unit Packets will be mailed to Units and sponsoring Posts in October. It is the sincere hope of the entire AL-

ABGS Committee that all units and sponsoring Posts will make a greater effort to secure funding from contributors earlier in the year. Sponsors need to keep in contact with their local high school and home-schooled students to ensure a successful experience for each delegate. Hopefully, all units sponsoring the 729

Riverdale Students Fold Flags for Troops Fifty kindergarteners from Riverdale Schools participated in the Pocket Flag Project presented to them by the Richland Center American Legion Auxiliary. They learned about flag etiquette, troop deployment and love of country. They folded a small American flag into a triangular shape, placed it in a re-sealable plastic bag and

then drew pictures, wrote notes and signed the special card that accompanies each flag. Each student then received a hand-held flag that they could keep along with a poppy. The pocket flags will be sent to the 829th Engineering Company of the WI National Guard based out of Richland Center that is currently deployed in Afghanistan.

AEF AUXILIARY EMERGENCY FUND Pat Ziarnik, Department Chairman forjsmom@yahoo.com H. 920-496-2291 SHELTER, FOOD, UTILITIES: the three ways the Auxiliary Emergency Fund can help a member in need of assistance. Any member who has paid her dues for the last three years (current year included) is eligible to receive assistance for any of the three reasons. An application form is available at the website www.ALAforVeterans.org. ALL information is kept confidential and only the Grant Committee at National Headquarters knows anything on the application. (I DO NOT see any of the applications.) Have you donated to this great fund? Your donations are the only way this fund will survive. Consider a donation when planning your unit budget or why not try a fund raiser in your unit just for this fund? For the individual contributing $50 or more, a Certificate of Appreciate will be awarded at State Convention. For the unit making the largest donation for the coming year, recognition will be given at State Convention.
