A dedicated Legionnaire, Department Chaplain Greg Simonis, is remembered for his love of God, country and family. Greg made the decision to donate his organs and shared the gift of life with over 60 people when he passed on. Sue Hargraves of the McFarland Unit wrote, “May Greg’s
family not be afraid to smile as this too is a part of healing.” Pass on Greg’s legacy of service, faith, love of family, and the gift of life. The joy of a renewed life! Our niece Mary, PDC Leo’s sister Mary Ann’s daughter-in law, received a kidney and pancreas transplant in early February. Her life is now diabetic-free for the first time since the age of two because an organ donor shared their life. The gift of rehabilitation! The Veterans Creative Arts Program provides rehabilitation therapy and allows recovering veterans to express their emotions and feelings through visual and performing arts. We had
help them through their grief, provides support with the help of unit members and pays their ALA dues if they ask to renew or join. Share your blessings and experiences with veterans, youth and citizens in your community to pass on our legacy of servicenot-self. Share news about how you and your unit have made a difference for God and country. When you share your blessings, you receive the gift of hugs and smiles, which completes the circle of fulfilling the ALA mission. Love, Hope, SMILE – Life is a beautiful gift!

I judged the Tomah VA Performing Arts competition and enjoyed other veteran performances at the Zablocki VA. At the annual 6th District Americanism Banquet in Oshkosh, Char Kiesling was presented the American Legion Auxiliary 6th District’s Certificate of Appreciation. This award is in recognition for outstanding service and assistance which contributed to the advancement of Auxiliary programs and activities

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Char Kiesling Department Chaplain Music Chairman Ph: (920) 725-0121 Email: charbabyrn@yahoo.com “Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will bring me home.” With the passing of our dear Wisconsin American Legion Chaplain Greg Simonis on February 13, 2014, I would like to convey the American Legion Auxiliary’s deepest sympathy to Greg’s wife, Nancy, and his entire family. Chaplain Greg will surely be missed by both Legion and Auxiliary members. I wish I could have known him better, but those who did said he was a great Legionnaire – dedicated and inspirational. In keeping with Greg’s wishes, a Celebration of Life was held on March 1, 2014. For God and country, rest in peace. Lord God, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Give courage and faith to all who are sorrowful. May they find strength and courage to meet the days ahead. May they be assured of Your presence, protection and the certain hope in Your promise of the joys of everlasting life. Amen. For God and country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security.
GREETINGS FROM HEADQUARTERS Bonnie Dorniak Executive Secretary/Treasurer Ph: (608) 745-0124 Email: deptsec@amlegionauxwi.org Have you exhausted all efforts to increase membership in your Auxiliary Unit? If so, I’d like to share a small success story from Eau Claire Unit 53 and offer a fresh idea on how to recruit new members and rejuvenate current members! Instead of focusing on membership, Eau Claire Unit 53 is working the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary (see mission statement above). They accepted the task of making Camo Quilts and shower bags for the members of a deploying Wisconsin National Guard Unit. This is the biggest project the Auxiliary Unit has ever taken on but the members stepped up to the challenge, gave everything they had to make it a reality, and exceeded all expectations. At the time of this printing, the Unit is distributing the camo quilts and shower bags to the National Guard, so I’m hoping we will have pictures to share in the next issue. While the Auxiliary Unit was making the quilts and shower bags, they promoted their activities and the local newspaper
ran a full page article with pictures. Several positive things resulted from this publicity: 1) Two women called and asked to join the Auxiliary! 2) When the unit treasurer went to the bank, she was asked if the unit would set up a display in the bank lobby in May! 3) Another member was asked to set up a display at a large quilt show in Rice Lake to promote Auxiliary programs! This just goes to show that if people see the Auxiliary in action (who we are, what we do, and why it makes a difference), they will want to get or stay involved. Auxiliary members are encouraged to attend their district spring conference. This is a great time to learn more about the ALA, thank the district officers for all their hard work during the past year, and provide input as the district makes plans for the year ahead. Please see the schedule on page 3 for more information. There is still space available for the 2014 ALA Badger Girls State (ALABGS) session scheduled for June 15-20. Units interested in sponsoring a delegate should contact Carrie Thrasher at Department or their local high school to see if they have eligible junior students who wish to par-
ticipate. If your local high school doesn’t participate in the Girls State program, Units are encouraged to sponsor delegate(s) from another area. Department has a waiting list of young women who would like to attend ALABGS. It is discouraging when we have to turn people away due to lack of funds. 2015 Unit Membership Renewal Notice/Dues information is being mailed to Unit Presidents and Membership Chairmen in the next week or so. If you do not receive your information, please contact Andrea Stoltz at Department as soon as possible. Every unit is required to return the information form to Department no later than May 2, 2014. The minimum amount collected is $20 for senior members and $3 for junior members; units may charge more to offset costs of unit operations. The national organization will download member information on April 1st to generate the 2015 Membership Cards. Name and address changes that have not already been received at Department Headquarters will not be reflected on the 2015 cards. 2015 membership cards will be mailed to units after department convention.
CHILD WELFARE FOUNDATION Past National President Pearl Behrend is the Liaison to the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation (CWF) for the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Wisconsin. The Legion Family takes action because helping children matters. It matters so much to American Legion Auxiliary members that since CWF’s inception in 1954, we have contributed more than $9
million. We know our dollars count. The Child Welfare Foundation provides grants to child-serving organizations that support everything from childhood disease education and prevention to resources and research for military families. And that is why we give year after year. The American Legion handles the majority of the administrative costs for the foundation, so every dollar collected is entered
into the trust fund to be used for grants. We want every child to know that someone cares. Contributions to The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation should be made payable to “ALA-Wisconsin” and sent with a General Fund Suggested Donation Sheet (marking #4804-National Child Welfare Foundation) to: ALA-WI, P.O. Box 140, Portage, WI 53901.

The American Legion Auxiliary has been making a difference since its inception in 1919. Now, 95 years later, its members continue to carry out that very same mission…In the spirit of service, not self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. For God and country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace, and security. The purpose of the Children & Youth program is to protect, care for and support children and youth, particularly those of veterans’ families and military families.
At the beginning of the 2013-2014 year, suggestions were presented to accomplish that goal, including partnerships within and outside the Legion Family to identify and address children’s needs, implementation of public awareness events geared toward increasing community support, and encouragement to celebrate April’s Children & Youth Month and May’s National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. Other action steps recommended support of the Child Welfare Foundation, distribution of child-related Legion brochures, promotion of Josh Dogs, G.I. Josh Dogs, and Klinger the Horse – all based on real animals telling their unique stories to children, and a reminder to watch for youth going above and beyond for the Youth Hero and Good Deed Awards. Advertisements and packaging on your favorite products have also been making a difference. Brawny Paper Towels has contributed over $1.4 million to Wounded Warriors over the last two years. JC Pen-
ney Cares rounded up to the nearest dollar to support Boys & Girls Clubs, 4-H and Adopt-a-Classroom, to name a few. Gordman’s partnered with the Anti-Defamation League on No Place for Hate, an anti-bullying campaign; Chili’s MoreHope has raised millions of dollars for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital; likewise, Kohl’s Cares has tallied millions of dollars for kids’ health and education initiatives through sales of Curious George books, stuffed animals, and cookbooks. These campaigns provide a quick and easy way to support our children. With watchful eyes and guiding hands, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary forges the path to a brighter tomorrow. Your willingness to Share Your Life is making a difference in fulfilling the hopes and dreams of our children. As Gems of Service, your spirit of Service, Not Self will continue to make those dreams come true!

LEADERSHIP Diane Weggen Department Chairman Ph: (715) 644-2668 Email: dsweggen@centurytel.net Many Units and members are heeding the message to “Pass It On” when it comes to the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) legacy by “sharing their lives and being gems of service.” They are working together for veterans and learning about the ALA through leadership activities. Phillips Unit 122, Eau Claire Unit 53 and Markesan Unit 282 hosted workshops and a number of members have taken the National Leadership Correspondence Course. Too many members believe the Auxiliary Leadership Program is just for those in elected leadership positions. Not true. The program is designed to provide information about the Auxiliary and build good member skills. The more knowledge a person has, the more confident that person is. All members, prospective members, and American Legion Family members can find value in participating in a leadership workshop. Units, Counties, or Districts still have time to schedule a workshop this year. Good leaders are members who participate in Unit activities and programs and who strive to meet the mission (“Service, Not Self”) and vision (“… fellowship, patriotism, peace and security”) of the
Auxiliary. All members are strongly encouraged to take the National ALA Leadership Correspondence Course which can be found in the right hand column on the Programs page of the Department website (www.amlegionauxwi.org). ‘Correspondence Course - Sr. Version’ has the cover sheet, answer sheet, and exam questions. The information can be found in ‘A Capsule History of the First 90 Years’ and ‘The Unit is the Foundation.’ The ‘Correspondence Course - Jr. Version’ and ‘Junior Leadership Info Sheet’ are for Junior members. Even members who took the course within the past two years are encouraged to take the course again. Join members who are taking the challenge to become more knowledgeable about the Auxiliary and its programs. Recognition will be given to Units who have the highest number of members and/or Juniors completing the correspondence courses. Presidents must complete the course for the Unit,

County, or District award. For more information on the Leadership Program or how to schedule a Leadership workshop, contact Chairman Diane Weggen. The Auxiliary understands the need to develop leaders to carry on the growth and success of the ALA through leadership training and by promoting activities and program accomplishments. Members become leaders through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience. Any time members have the opportunity to participate in an activity that educates, motivates, or mentors them, leadership skills are being developed. “Share Your Life, Be Gems of Service” and find the leader inside yourselves.
