2003-2004 Season In Review

2003-2004 ONTARIO CHAMPIONS The Golden Hawk Women’s Hockey Team came to the 2003-2004 season with high hopes of redemption. In 2002-2003, the Laurier women had reached the OUA Finals, only to be defeated by the Toronto Varsity Blues in a close game marred by questionable calls. With a crop of new players supporting their many established veterans, the Hawks opened the season with optimism. Victories came immediately, with three straight off the mark, and despite a coaching change in the fall, the team maintained its momentum - not undefeated, but still at the top of their division. Early successes were tempered by a few awkward losses during the season. Guelph, Windsor, Queen’s, Brock, and Toronto all managed to beat the Hawks over the course of these season, but these hard-fought games served only to weld the ladies into an even more cohesive team. Newly arrived head coach Rick Osborne and assistant coach Brandy West-McMaster helped set the direction, and the Hawks remained strong in league play. By season’s end, the Hawks could boast a 12-6-3-1 record, placing them second in the OUA Division West, just behind the Guelph Gryphons. Gearing up for the post season, the Hawks could take stock of a number of excellent success stories. Chief among these were the performances of two of their first year players, Fiona Aiston and Laurissa Kenworthy. Aiston, joining Laurier from Ottawa, ended the season tied for fifth in points in the OUA, with 13 goals and 13 assists, while Newmarket-native Kenworthy claimed ninth spot in the league with 13 goals and 11 assists. Along with veteran players Alison Goodman, Amanda Joseph and Ashley Stephenson, these ladies were all named OUA All-Stars just before the weekend of the OUA Championship. Despite the strong players they could draw on, the Hawks were still seen as underdogs as they hosted the OUA Final Four Championship. As their record left them fourth in the OUA, they were slotted to play the league-leading Toronto Varsity Blues in their opening game - a repeat of last year’s final. This time the Hawks would not be bested: in a hard-fought game, they outscored their longtime rivals, and delivered a stunning 4-3 victory. With the specters of last year fading, the Laurier ladies launched themselves into the OUA final against the Queen’s Golden Gaels. The Hawks found their rhythm early, the fate of the game rapidly became a foregone conclusion: Queen’s fell 3-1, and the Laurier women had their title of OUA Champions restored. The Laurier Women’s Hockey Team now sets its sights on the National Stage. In their last appearance on CIS ice in 2001-2002, the women earned the silver medal, losing their final game 5-2 to the University of Alberta Pandas. With the burst of momentum given to them by their OUA success, the women hope to improve their national showing, and to remind the nation of their level of excellence.
