“Building Champions, Building Traditions”
V O L U M E 17, I S S U E 1 Laurier’s student-athletes are a shining example of what it means to live a life of leadership and purpose. Our Golden Hawks were Dr. Max Blouw once again a source of immense pride for the university throughout the past academic year. During 2015-16, we witnessed the many wonderful athletic accomplishments of our student-athletes. But what we aren’t able to see on the field, on the court, or on the ice are the accomplishments of our Golden Hawk athletes as dynamic leaders in the classroom and in the community. Laurier athletes are widely known for their academic achievement and tireless volunteer work. These are individuals who develop into leaders at Laurier and go on to engage meaningfully in their careers, in their communities and in their personal lives. This university takes great pride in our athletic programs and the people who make them possible – from the student athletes who balance their academics and volunteer work with their athletic pursuits to the coaches, managers, trainers and athletic staff who give so much of their time and energy to help the Golden Hawks succeed. It is thanks to their passion and dedication that Laurier is able to enjoy such a strong athletic tradition. Congratulations to all of our athletes, coaches and athletic staff for their achievements

Curling Hawks Golden in ‘15-16
The men’s curling team were OUA Champions for the second consecutive season, but traded in the CIS silver for gold as they became national champions.
The Golden Hawks had a bright 2015-16 year highlighting team improvements and individual successes. The height of athletic achievement this year was the men’s curling team bringing home two championship banners as they earned the gold at the OUA and CIS tournaments. The women’s curling team was the only other team to bring home a banner as they earned the OUA title for the second consecutive year. Although they missed out on the gold, the women’s soccer team had a taste of glory as they marched their way to the second tier and an OUA silver medal. The men’s football team saw improvement over their previous season too as the squad not only snatched up the final playoff spot, but also advanced to the semifinals with an outstanding upset victory that highlighted several athletic achievments for the team. Off the court, Laurier’s studentathletes excelled in the classroom as 37 Hawks earned CIS Academic honours and 14 earned OUA Academic honours. In the community, the Laurier Lettermen Club, led by their first female president Tamika Marks-Grant from women’s rugby, led the charge as studentathletes from teams across the department spread the Golden Hawk spirit throughout the Kitchener-Waterloo community. Here is a closer look at your Golden Hawk highlights for 2015-16. Aaron Squires earned CIS First Team All-Canadian and OUA First Team All-Star status, Spencer Nuttall earned CIS Second Team All-Canadian and OUA Second Team All-Star status, Richard Krell also earned CIS Second Team All-Canadian honours, and Fraser Reid earned OUA First Team All-Star honours. Assisting the men in earning the sweep of the OUA was the women’s curling team who went undefeated at the provincial championships, hosted in Guelph, to earn the gold medal in back-to-back years. Last year the women earned a national bronze, and went in to the CIS tournament hoping for an even better outcome, but struggled in the first few days and were eliminated from playoffs. Four women were honoured as OUA First Team All-Stars following the season: Evangeline Fortier, Brenda Holloway, Chelsea Brandwood, and Megan Arnold. The Golden Hawks women’s soccer team stayed strong this season with a 12-2-2 conference record to achieve second place in the OUA West and third in the OUA overall. With a three-game win streak concluding their regular season, the Hawks went into OUA playoffs with momentum on their side and took on the Windsor Lancers at home to kick off the post season. A 1-0 victory over Windsor, followed by a 2-1 victory in Ottawa over the OUA East first seeded Gee-Gees set the Hawk women up to take on fifthseeded Queen’s for the gold medal. The Gaels
