Season In Review Over the short lifespan of this young hockey program, the Golden Hawks have built a strong tradition already. Capturing an Ontario medal every year of their existence, Laurier has now made that a gold medal three out of the last four years, and four of the last seven. On the heals of capturing the OUA Championship last year, the Hawks were looking to defend their title this year without captain Alison Goodman who was lost to graduation. A standout for four seasons with the Hawks, Goodman left Laurier as one of the OUA’s top defenders all time, having captured three All-Canadian Awards, two Ontario Championships, a CIS silver medal, and was named OUA’s Top Female Athlete of the Year in 2003-04. Though this was a tough loss to the defense, OUA West Coach of the Year Rick Osborne immediately bolstered his lineup with the return of goaltender Cindy Eadie. A former All-Canadian and CIS Rookie of the Year, Eadie would return between the pipes for the Hawks following a leave of absence to compete for Canada’s National Softball team in the 2004 Olympics in Athens. And what a return it would be! Eadie along with captain Ashley Stephenson, both named OUA All-Stars, would lead the Hawks to a first place finish in the OUA, with the leagues top defense allowing only 18 goals against. Posting the country’s best save percentage and goals against, Eadie would also set an OUA record with 10 shutouts during the regular season, and then added to that count with two more during the OUA playoffs. The team has posted eight shutouts since Christmas, and has not allowed a goal against since Feb 18th. Offensively the Hawks have been led by second year forward Laurissa Kenworthy. This OUA 1st Team Allstar posted 22 points in the regular season and then was named player of the game in both the OUA Semi-Final and Championship game. OUA 2nd Team All-Star Fiona Aiston and fourth year forwards Amanda Joseph, Jessica Singh and Candice Djukic provide the supporting cast that has netted 3 plus goals in eight of the Hawks last 10 games, while contributing defensively with strong two-way play. Making their fourth appearance in the National Championship and third in the last four years, the Hawks will be looking to improve on last year’s performance. Finishing in fifth in 2003-04 at the Championship, the Hawks will be looking to bring home a medal in 2004-05. -
