Season In Review The defending national champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks make their return to the CIS championships in what has been a historic season. This 2005-06 team is responsible for the program’s first 20 win season with a 20-3-1 record racking up 41 points, 11 more then their closest competition. The Hawks picked up where they left off last season with a red-hot 10 game winning streak to open the 05-06 campaign. These wins came on the strength of nard-nosed defence and goaltending, as the Hawks allowed two goals or less in 9 of the first 10 wins, including back-to-back shutouts by starting goaltender Morgan Wielgosz and her back-up Kirsten Trost. Wielgosz proved to be one of the pillars of this team as she notched four shutouts in the regular season while posting a 14-1-1 record and a 1.14 goals against average. For the second consecutive year head coach Rick Osborne was recognized as OUA Coach of the Year. Laurissa Kenworthy, the team’s leader in goals (11) and points (24) and team captain Ashley Stephenson were named OUA first-team all-stars. Fiona Aiston (19 points in 24 games) and blue-liner Lauren Meschino (nine assists and 13 points) were selected second-team all-stars. It would be a tough road back to the CIS Championships in post-season for the Hawks as they had to face a solid Guelph Gryphons team in the semi-finals. After trailing 1-0 in the game, the Hawks responded with the equalizer from Candice Djukic and the eventual game-winner by Meschino. Stephenson was named player of the game. In a re-match of last year’s OUA Final the Hawks faced off against the Toronto Varsity Blues. It took overtime to resolve this game between evenly matched teams, but it was Jessica Judges’ game-winner and Wielgosz’s 30 saves that made the difference in a 2-1 win. Andrea Bevan was named player of the game in the win over Toronto. With the gold medal victory the Hawks claimed their third consecutive OUA Championship and fifth in the last eight seasons.
