CIS Championship Information The Golden Hawks find themselves in the National Championships for the second consecutive year and their seventh overall appearance in post conference play. Following the arrival of new coach Kelly Nobes, Laurier started off the season on the right foot, and have been the premier team in the OUA all season long. This year’s team led the country in wins with 22,
posting a regular season record of 22-5-1 overall, setting a new Laurier record. Along the way Laurier entered the CIS Top Ten at #10 in November and have maintained a position since, finishing the year with a ranking of #3. The Hawks enter the nationals playing St. FX who they have yet to compete against. Also in their pool is Moncton, who Laurier has played the most in post-conference play and has faced in a National Championship game (1989/90 - L 2-1).

The Golden Hawks made their mark in 2006-07 recording the best regular season record for men's hockey in Wilfrid Laurier history. Under the guidance of new head coach Kelly Nobes, the Hawks recorded a 22-5-1-0 record. The season commenced with a meeting in Toronto versus the Varsity Blues. The Blues walked away with a 4-2 win handing the Hawks their first loss of the season. Following this game the Golden Hawks would go ten consecutive games without suffering another loss. Highlights of this streak included back-to-back wins versus the Windsor Lancers with scores 3-2 and 10-3 and an impressive come from behind effort by the Hawks versus UQTR to end the game in a tie. The Hawks would travel to O�awa where they would eventually face their second loss of the season versus the Gee-Gee's. The worn out Hawks were unable to keep up with the Gee-Gee's a�er having played a competitive game the evening prior versus the McGill Redmen. O�awa defeated the Hawks 7-2. In the second half of the season Laurier suffered three more losses to York and Brock (2). The Golden Hawks bounced back however to go on a nine game winning streak to end the regular season with a 22-5-1-0 record. Highlights of this win streak included back-toback wins in Thunder Bay versus the Lakehead Thunderwolves with scores of 9-3 and 6-5 and a nail biting Ba�le of Waterloo versus the Golden Hawks' cross-town rivals, the Waterloo Warriors, where the Hawks walked away with a close 4-3 win. The Hawks' impressive regular season had them advancing to the playoffs ranked third in the nation, the highest in the OUA. The Golden Hawks' first place position in the OUA Mid-West division provided them with a bye in the first round of playoffs. In the quarter-finals they would come up against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. In the first match of the series Laurier handed the Thunderwolves their first loss on Lakehead ice following a 14-0 playoff win streak at home. Game two saw a very determined Hawk squad take the Thunderwolves by storm to take the series and move on to the semi-finals. The next round of playoffs saw a rematch of last year's playoff ba�le between the Golden Hawks and the Waterloo Warriors in the Ba�le of Waterloo. Last season the Hawks defeated the Warriors in the third game of the quarter-finals to take the series. This season saw similar results as Laurier defeated Waterloo in the first two games to take the semi-finals. Waterloo didn't go down without a fight however as game two of the series in particular saw many penalties from both squads as the rivalry heated up. The win in game two advanced the Hawks to the OUA Championships and secured them with a seed in the National Championship for the second consecutive year. The OUA Championship saw the Golden Hawks hosting the UQTR Patriotes in front of 1,635 fans. The two teams had only met once in the regular season where the game ended in a hard fought 3-3 tie. The Patriotes took an early lead in the Championship game leaving the Hawks to play catch up. Laurier was unable to recover from the early three goal deficit however to give UQTR the 5-3 win and the Queen's Cup. The silver medal was the Golden Hawks' fourth in the program's history.

Road to Nationals Oct 13/06 @ Toronto L 2-4 The game was tied 1-1 going into the third period where the Varsity Blues took control of the game. Toronto scored three goals in the third to take the win. Nathan Peacock and Mark Voakes each picked up a goal for the Golden Hawks. Oct 14/06 @ Ryerson W 4-2 The Golden Hawks took an early lead in which the Ryerson Rams were never able to recover. Rookie forward Nathan Peacock led the Hawks in scoring with two goals. Oct 21/06 vs RMC W 6-3 The Golden Hawks’ first game at home resulted in a commanding 6-3 win over the RMC Paladins despite penalty troubles. Laurier out-shot the Paladins 46-32, winning their home opener and first of a double-header. Oct 22/06 vs Queen's W 5-4 The Golden Hawks took an early lead outscoring the Golden Gaels in the first period 3-1. The game was 4-4 going into the third with Rob Dmytruk scoring the game winning goal for the Hawks to bring the team's record to 3-1. Oct 27/06 @ Waterloo W 8-6 The Hawks took the win in this edition of the Ba�le of Waterloo. This high scoring match saw lots of penalties as the cross-town rivals played with much aggresion. Ryan Courtney led the Hawks in scoring with three goals. Oct 28/06 @ Western W 4-3 The Hawks saw their first overtime of the 200607 season in this meeting with the Mustangs. The game was 3-3 at the end of the third period. Laurier was able to redeem themselves a�er falling 2-1 to the 'Stangs in the second. John Thiel scored the game winning goal for Laurier to take the victory. Nov 3/06 vs Windsor W 3-2 This game was the first of a double header against the Lancers. The match remained close but Laurier was able to take the win. Laurier goaltender Mike Thomson made 23 saves, as the Hawks were outshot 25-19. Nov 4/06 vs Windsor W 10-3 In the second meeting of this weekend's double header the Hawks came out strong and dominated the Lancers. Laurier took the win playing as a team with each of the ten goals contributed by different players. Nov 10/06 vs Concordia W 3-2 The Hawks took an early against Concordia bringing the game 3-1 going into the third period. The Stingers were only able to respond to the Hawks with one goal in the final period of the game giving Laurier the win. Goal scorers for the Hawks were Ma� Grennier, Nathan Peacock, and Riley Moher. Nov 11/06 vs UQTR T 3-3 The game started off slow as both teams remained scoreless going into the second period. The second period saw more action as the Patriotes manged three goals past Golden Hawk goal Mike Thomson while Laurier responded with two goals by Rob Dmytruk and Riley Moher. The Hawks shutout UQTR in the third period. Nick Vergeer scored once in the third to end the game with a tie score. Nov 17/06 @ McGill W 5-4 The men traveled to Montreal to face the McGill Redmen. Both teams took advantage of their opponent’s penalty troubles throughout the entire game. The match was forced into overtime where the Hawks' Nathan Peacock scored to take the win. Laurier managed to take the win despite being outscored 28-45. Rob Dmytruk led the Golden Hawks to
the overtime victory with three goals and one assist. Nov 18/06 @ O�awa L 2-7 The Golden Hawks suffered their first loss of the season since their opening match versus the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Gee-Gees took a commanding lead in the first period shu�ing out the Hawks 5-0. The Hawks spent the remainder of the match playing catchup but were only able to slip two goals past O�awa scored by Nick Vergeer and Jordan Fair. Nov 23/06 @ Guelph W 5-2 Laurier played a very disciplined game and went 5 for 5 on the penalty kill. Aaron Forer was strong in net, making 32 saves throughout the night. Leading scorer for the hawks was Jeff Borrows with two and Chris Di Ubaldo, Mark Voakes, and Ma� Maccarone each with one. Nov 25/06 vs York W 4-1 The game went quiet in the first period but picked up momentum in the second. Laurier managed to score three goals in the third period. Forer played another solid game, stopping 30 of 31 shots. Nov 30/06 vs Brock W 5-0 The Hawks hosted the Badgers in what would be their first of back-to back meetings. Mark Voakes scored the opening goal at 6:07 which was the only goal scored in the first 40 minutes. It wasn’t until Nick Vergeer scored a�er the halfway mark of the third that the Hawks came out with 3 more to take the win. Dec 2/06 @ Brock L 3-4 The Hawks traveled to St. Catharine’s to meet the Badgers for their second meeting of the week. The crowd saw a very close game with Brock scoring first, but Laurier’s Ma� Grennier answered back on a power play less than three minutes later. The game continued to go back and forth with other goals scored for the Hawks by Rob Dmytruk and Nathan Peacock but the Badgers were able to inch ahead by one to take the win. Jan 4/07 @ York L 3-4 aurier traveled to Canlan Ice Sports Arena at York for their opening match of 2007. York was the first to take the lead scoring in the first period. The Lions managed to pick up another two goals in the second but Laurier’s Riley Moher and Nick Vergeer responded to bring the game to a close 32 going into the third. The game stayed neck and neck for the final period with a goal by the Badgers followed by a goal from Hawks’ Jordan Fair. Laurier was unable to get any more scoring opportunities inevitably giving the Lions the win. Jan 6/07 vs Guelph W 4-3 The game started relatively quick with Laurier taking an early 3-1 lead in the first period and another goal in the second to increase their lead by three going into the third. Guelph picked up their momentum and responded with two more goals in the third but their efforts were simply not enough. Laurier took the win with Jeff MacDougald making 30 saves at net. Jan 11/07 vs Brock L 4-5 The Hawks hosted the Badgers in what proved to be a very intense game. Brock took a 3-1 lead in the first period leaving the Hawks to play catchup for the remainder of the match. The Badgers were able to find more scoring opportunities however to inevitably take the win. Laurier was out-shot by the Badgers 37-30. Jan 13/07 @ Brock W 7-3 The second match of the back-to back series saw a much more determined Golden Hawk squad. The game started off close with goals by Mark
Voakes and Ma� Maccarone followed by two Badger goals to bring the score to an even 2-2. The Hawks came out in full force in the second however with the Hawks outscoring the Badgers 4-1 in the period. Laurier managed to pick up one more goal in the third to take the win. Jan 18/07 vs York W 4-1 Rob Dmytruk scored the first goal of the game, with 15 seconds le� in the first period. Laurier was 1 for 5 on the power play, with the goal coming from Mike LcClair on the man-advantage. Other goal scorers for the Hawks included Voakes with the game-winner followed by a short-handed goal from captain Ma� Grennier. The Hawks out-shot their opponent 37-24. Jan 20/07 vs Guelph W 5-4 Guelph took the early lead with two goals in the first period but Laurier answered back, evening things up before the period was over. In the second period the Gryphons took the lead once again but Mark Voakes responded just over a minute later. Chris Di Ubaldo and Luke Girard each picked up goals in the third, outscoring the Badgers 2-1 in the period to take the win. Jeff MacDougald stopped 30 shots on net for the Hawks in the evening. Jan 26/07 @ Lakehead W 9-3 The Golden Hawks traveled to Thunder Bay to meet the Lakehead Thunderwolves in back-toback games. Chris Di Ubaldo and Nick Vergeer each had four points in the first meeting of the weekend. Rookie forward Nathan Peacock had the only multi-goal night picking up the third and what would be the game-winner in the match. Shots on goal were 43-39 for the Hawks. Jan 27/07 @ Lakehead W 6-5 The second meeting of the weekend saw a more determined Lakehead squad. The game stayed neck and neck for all three periods with a 5-5 score at the end of the 60 minutes. The Hawks’ Mark Voakes picked up the game winner for the Hawks at 4:24 in overtime. Laurier took the win despite being out-shot 51-44. Feb 1/07 vs Western W 4-2 The Hawks took a lead in the first period when Jeff Borrows scored short-handed at 12:54. Mark Voakes increased their lead less than five minutes later, scoring his 17th goal of the season on the power play. Nathan Peacock scored what would be the game winner in the second period followed by a goal from Ma� Grennier. Jeff MacDougald recorded 33 saves on the night. Feb 3/07 vs Waterloo W 4-3 The Hawks faced their cross-town rival in their last regular season home game. The game was tied 3-3 at the end of the third period forcing the match into overtime. Nathan Peacock picked up the game winner for Laurier, bringing the Hawks’ record to 2-0 against the Warriors on the season. Laurier outshot their opponent 39-26. Feb 8/07 @ Guelph W 3-2 The Hawks picked up their 21st win of the season, marking the highest win total in a season in Golden Hawk men’s hockey history. The Hawks’ penalty kill was at 83% as they knocked off five of six penalties. Jeff MacDougald faced 24 shots on the evening while his counterpart was bombarded with 48. Feb 10 @ York W 7-3 The Hawks took the final game of the regular season to take first place in the OUA with 45 points. Jeff MacDougald played an impressive game on net stopping 39 shots from his opponent. Leading scorers for the Hawks were James Edgar and John Thiel each with two.

Golden Hawks Staff KELLY NOBES - HEAD COACH Kelly Nobes joined the Golden Hawk men's hockey program this season. He attended McGill University as a student and earned both a B. Ed. (Physical Education) and M.A. (Exercise Physiology) degree. While at McGill, he played four seasons, finishing ninth overall in scoring, with 181 points in 131 games. He also served as Assistant Coach to the Redmen under current head coach Martin Raymond. Before coming to Laurier, Coach Nobes was at RMC for 5 seasons, where he made the OUA playoffs all 5 times. He broke the school record for points in a season, twice, in 2001-02 and 2004-05. Kelly resides is Waterloo with his wife Michelle along with his son Boadie and his daughter Darcy.

DAVE WILLIAMS - ASSISTANT COACH Dave joins the Golden Hawk program this season as an assistant coach with the program. He comes from the Listowel Cyclones where he was the Head Coach and General Manager of the Mid-Western Junior B team. In his time there he finished as a semi-finalist as well as a division champion. Previous to coaching, Dave played four years of Junior B Hockey. Since then he has achieved advanced level one certification and an Arts degree of the University of Western Ontario. He followed up his undergraduate Arts degree with a B. Ed at University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and is now his seventh year as a guidance counselor at Listowel District Secondary school. Dave currently resides in Stratford.
DOUG CARMICHAEL- ASSISTANT COACH Doug is in his second season with the Golden Hawk men’s hockey program. The retired Physical education teacher from Bluevale Collegiate Institute takes care of the strength and conditioning program for the team. Previous to working with the Laurier hockey program Doug was involved with the Waterloo Siskins Junior B team. In his time with Bluevale he was a coach for both the football and track programs. Doug is married with three kids.

In the 2006-07 regular season Di Ubaldo came in third in team scoring with a total of 16 goals, the most he has ever scored in a single regular season. Chris was also the leader in Golden Hawk powerplay goals for the season with 11.

Laurier is in top spot among Ontario’s universities in the Primarily Undergraduate category of the Maclean’s Annual Rankings of Universities, and is second overall in the country in the reputational ranking. Laurier finished fi�h overall in the Primarily Undergraduate category, up two spots from last year’s seventh place ranking. The university is Ontario’s top performer in key student-related categories such as Average Entering Grade and Proportion of Students with (entering averages of ) 75% or higher. Laurier also improved in Student Services as a Percentage of Budget, and retained its second place finish overall in Scholarships and Bursaries. The university had its best-ever showing in reputation, finishing second overall in the country. In the individual reputational categories, Laurier finished third in Highest Quality, third in Most Innovative, third in Leaders of Tomorrow, and second in Best Overall.
The John Aird Center, which acts as the main entrance to the campus, was built in 1988. Visit the Robert Langen Art Gallery for a touch of art and stop by the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall to hear the internationally renowned Penderecki String Quartet.

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities a�er Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.

THE CITY OF WATERLOO The City of Waterloo is an exciting place to live. Concerned with moving into the future with a strong sense of “community”, the Imagine Waterloo campaign is taking the city by storm. This is a proud community, determined to broaden the horizons and opportunities for all who reside here. The college and universities promote the city with a good reputation, having a variety of jobs, economic growth and the ongoing influx of young people that continues to keep the city vibrant and dynamic. In a recent pole held within the community, the presence of the universities made the top five likes within the city. Also included in the top five likes were the parks, especially Waterloo Park which is located with vehicle entrances off Albert Street, Westmount Road and Seagram Drive. Uptown Waterloo, (another top five) is conveniently located for the university students. With the reliable transit system or a good pair of walking shoes the shopping centers, grocery stores, bars and pubs are accessible to all. The businesses in the area are appreciative of

The entertainment factor within the city is very alive. Take a drive up to Conestoga Mall for some shopping or stop by the new Galaxy Theatres to see a flick. The bar scene on University Avenue is the place to be in the evenings with choices of Ceasar Martinis, Fubar, Molly Bloom’s and McGuiness. Recreation in Waterloo is on the rise with the new addition of RIM Park located off University Avenue East. This new 500-acre recreational facility will house 18 outdoor playing fields and the first municipal 18-hole golf course. Also included is a Multi-Use Recreational facility which houses 4 Olympic size ice rinks, 2 double gymnasiums and much more. Closer in proximity to the universities is the Waterloo Recreation Complex, a facility that includes an Olympic size ice rink, indoor running track and a swimming pool…home of Golden Hawks hockey. Waterloo is no doubt a great place to live. As a key center in Canada’s Technology Triangle, the place to go for a famous Oktoberfest sausage, or the place to study for a PhD or Mba Waterloo is the city of choice. 35

DAVID MCMURRAY, DEAN OF STUDENTS
David McMurray is Assistant Vice-President Student Services and Dean of Students at Wilfrid Laurier University. He assumed this position July 1, 1997 a�er a career in student services at the University of Windsor. He has served as Chair of the Ontario Commi�ee on Student Affairs, has been President of the Student Affairs and Services Association, serves on the faculty of the Canadian Institute on Student Affairs and Services and is currently the President of the Canadian College and University Student Services Association. Born in Windsor, Ontario, David spent most of his early days growing up in Thunder Bay, Ontario where he excelled in many sports including football, basketball, baseball, track, tennis, hockey and skiing. A severe knee injury ended his active participation in sport. “I had a very difficult time giving up the contact variety of athletics but was able to make the adjustment to aerobic activities like swimming and long distance biking which have become life long.” Word has it he can handle the golf course pre�y well too! David’s interest in Golden Hawks football goes back to two games he fondly recalls in
the mid-seventies. While at the University of Windsor he recalls an exceptional Lancer team that beat the Hawks in Windsor by a score of 63 to 7. That was extraordinary but short lived as a Tuffy Knight thoroughly motivated Hawks squad returned the following year turning the tables on the Lancers with a 77-6 thrashing. Since arriving at Laurier several years ago David is regularly seen in purple and gold. He not only never misses a game but has masterminded a strong strategy for the long-term success of Athletics and Recreation at Laurier. The keys to his strategy of “building champions” comes from investing in management, coaching, student athlete development, facilities, equipment, recruitment, program development, sponsorship and fundraising. The outcomes have been obvious in this short time and the Golden Hawks are in great shape for the future!

WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY PETER BAXTER, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Peter Baxter’s years as Athletic Director at Wilfrid Laurier University have provided many noteworthy highlights. - He has shepherded the renewal of the Athletics Program at Laurier that raised the bar for all varsity sports to become competitive at the national level. Invest in People, Improve the Product, and Win is the vision that Varsity teams have followed and have resulted in improved performances across the board as well as Top Ten Rankings in 2006-07 in Football, and Men’s and Women’s Hockey. Under his tenure Golden Hawk teams have won fi�een OUA titles in Women’s Hockey, Men's and Women’s Curling, Women’s Field Lacrosse, Football and Men’s Soccer. There have also been four National Championships under his watch in Men's Soccer twice, Football, and Women's Hockey. - He has overseen the $3 Million Athletic Complex renovation that has modernized the strength training and gymnasium facilities as well as creating a new Athletic therapy Clinic. Renovation to the Stadium has included the new football team room, Coaches’ Offices, and Film Room for the Golden Hawk Football Operations. He has also secured student support for a major expandsion of the WLU fitness and weight room facility which tripled in size in 2005. Baxter also led the redevelopment of Willison Field in the summer of 2006. The former grass field now known as ‘Alumni Field’ is a state of the art turf field for intramurals and soccer programs. In 2003 he successfully created the weeky one hour magazine show hosted by award winning journalist David Grossman entitled ‘Laurier Hawk Talk’ . 570 News as well as the broadcasts of several home football games. - He has placed his own managerial imprint on the University’s athletic Plant, reorganizing the administrative involvement with the over 20 varsity teams to ensure accountability and results. Starting with the best possible raw material -- people with the best skills. Baxter has focused on acquiring Top quality coaches. In the past year Baxter has hired Gary Jeffries in
Football, as a Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach. Key hire in Women’s Basketball, Stu Julius has added national team experienced coaches instantly to those respective sports. In 2000, he created instant credibility for WLU Men’s Basketball with the appointment of Coach Peter Campbell formerly of Laurentian and the World University Games Head Coach for Canada. Dave McIntyre, an assistant coach on the 2001 Junior National Under 22 Women’s Volleyball, took the reigns of the women’s Volleyball team following a successful run by respected Russ Woloshyn. - Together with key Athletic Alumni, Baxter has established the Golden Hawk Club and it’s sport chapters including the 5th Quarter Club for Football. - He assisted Golden Hawk Swim Coach Dean Boles in establishing the National Swim Center for Ontario at Wilfrid Laurier. - He has seen a record number of Golden Hawk student athletes earn honours both on the field and in the classroom. In 1998-99, 17 Golden Hawks earned OUA and CIAU Academic All-Canadian Honours compared to 42 Golden hawks in 2002-03. - He has seen the addition of Women’s 37

WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY Rugby and Women’s Lacrosse to Varsity Status that began OUA play in 1999 as well as the Men’s Baseball program which achieved varsity status in 2003. - He has quickly found himself in the midst of the OUA and CIS league mix as a member of the OUA Executive Commi�ee and as Chair of the 2001 CIAU University Cup Hockey held in Kitchener. In 2001, he negotiated and initially produced the first radio show for the OUA, “The University Sport Report” with host David Grossman heard weekly Sunday mornings on the FAN 590 showcasing student-athletes across all sports. As well, Peter currently is the OUA Convenor for Football. The Valedictorian for his ‘82 Physical and Health Education Class at U of T, this former Executive with the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) and more recently former Director of Athletics and Recreation at the University of Toronto at Mississauga (Erindale College), brought a wealth of experience in athletic administration, facility management, and finance to his new role as the new Boss Hawk at Wilfrid Laurier. At U of T’s Erindale College, Baxter convinced the Toronto Argonauts to establish their Football Operations on the back of his football field, a deal worth $1,000,000 to Erindale College. A $1,000,000 complex was constructed the summer of 1996 at Erindale that housed the team’s dressing room, athletic therapy, and coaches’ offices for the entire year. Baxter not only worked with Don Mathews and his coaching staff day to day but also was able to be part of two Grey Cup Championship years for the Argos. Argo President Bob Nicholson honored Baxter for his support to the Argonaut Organization. Looking for the challenge of winning a Vanier Cup, Baxter set his sights on Laurier with its rich football tradition. Baxter has maintained his relationship with the Toronto Argo-
nauts who provide professional development opportunities and advice to our Golden Hawk football coaches, athletic therapists and equipment personnel. For over a decade Peter served as Football Official (Level 4), refereeing in some years over 120 football games within Toronto High School Boys Tackle and Girls Flag, as well as Provincial Senior Touch Football. Peter has officiated at Four Provincial and two National Senior Touch Football Championships. Baxter has served as Manager of the Canadian Senior Canoe Team in ‘86 and ‘87 and a�ended the Canadian Olympic Academy in 1988. He has earned awards for his contributions to High School Sport by OFSAA and he was granted the honour of placing the hood on Mr. Rick Hansen Honorary Degree Recipient, University of Toronto Convocation. Both he and wife Wendy reside in Waterloo with son Mark 15 years and daughter Haley 13 years.
