2007-2008 SEASON IN REVIEW Starting the 2007-08 season, the Laurier men’s curling team would see several major roster changes from the previous seasons edition. Last year’s skip, Bill Francis would step down to the third position to let first year Mike Anderson take the skip and lead this Golden Hawks squad. Paul Arkilander would reprise his role as the team’s second, while rookie’s Matthew Mapletoft, Dave Kaun and Scott McGregor would round out the team’s roster. On the women’s side, Hollie Nichol would remain as the team’s skip while second year Danielle Inglis would step in the fill the shoes of departed fourth year veteran Stacey McCormack. Last season’s rookie of the year, Laura Hickey would play as the third and Hawks Erica Butler, Hilary McDermott, Tracy O’Leary and Alex Hughes would fill out the remainder of the team’s roster. Both team’s first competition of the season was at the East Sectional hosted by the University of Toronto at the High Park Curling Club. The women’s team drew the Trent Excalibur and played a very close game. With Trent scoring a four-ender in the second end, the Hawks regrouped and stole the final end to win 8-7. The men’s draw was almost a mirror to the ladies as the boys also played Trent to a close, extra end finish to win 7-6. Both teams then took on the Queen’s Golden Gaels. The men came out strong scoring two in the first and steals of singles in the second and third. For the guys, the final score was a 7-3 for a win. The ladies also took on the Gaels and Queen’s opened well, with a four-ender in the second end. Laurier responded with a three ender of their own and a steal in the fourth. The final score favored the Hawks 8-6. The final draw of the East Sectional for the teams was against the host Toronto Varsity Blues. For the Hawks, Erica Butler executed Laurier’s aggressive strategy to take a four-ender in the seventh to put the game out of reach for the Blues. The Lady Hawks pulled out the 9-5 win. For the men, the draw was back and forth for the first few ends. Laurier pulled away with a couple of deuces and skip Mike Anderson held off the Blues to give the Hawks a 6-4 victory. Both teams finished the tourney with 3-0 records. The Golden Hawks second tournament was the Crossovers hosted by Trent University. Both teams took on the Waterloo Warriors, Windsor Lancers, Western Mustangs and the Brock Badgers. In the first draw, the ladies took the Warriors to extra ends and won 4-3. Their second draw saw Laurier lose a four point lead as the Lancers skip made a challenging tap back to earn three in the final end for the 7-6 win. The Hawks third draw saw them lose to the undefeated Mustangs 7-5 in the final end. The ladies fourth and final draw started favorably with an early four-ender to earn an easy victory over the Badgers 9-1 and finish regular season competition with a 5-2 record. On the Men’s side the Hawks started off with a 9-3 loss to their cross-town rival Waterloo. The team would eventually find its groove and defeat the Lancers 9-5 with an early three-ender. Laurier continued to up the ante as they would take down the Mustangs 5-3 with some solid shot making. The final draw for the Hawks would be forfeited by the Badgers leaving the team with a league best 6-1 record on the season. With both teams qualifying for the OUA Championship, the squads made their way to Windsor for the event. The men’s team defeated Waterloo and Western in the first day’s draws and lost a close match to Queen’s to advance to the Gold medal game. For the Ladies, it took a one point win over Western, after losses to Queen’s and Trent, to force a tie breaker game the following day. The team regrouped over night and caught fire the next day defeating Western and Trent successively to get to the Gold medal game. With both teams vying for a championship, Laurier was ecstatic. The Ladies continued their hot streak taking Queen’s 8-5 and earning their first provincial championship since 1998. The men waited all day to find out their competition would be the Western Mustangs. Laurier hung an 8-5 loss on them to earn the team’s sixth championship. The two championships would be the first time Wilfrid Laurier has held both the men’s and women’s championships in the same sport, in the same season.

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities aer Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
