2008-2009 Season In Review The 2008-2009 season saw some critical line up changes to the men’s team with veteran fifth year player Bill Francis and Mike Anderson from last year's squad graduating. Matt Mapletoft, who threw lead rocks in the previous year, stepped up to fill in some big shoes in the skipping position. Paul Arkilander moved up to the vice position and rookies Matt Lowe and Shane Konings rounded out the front end. The other alternates on the team include second year Scott McGregor, second year Dave Kaun and first year Justin Sim-Little. On the women’s side, the four ladies who won the OUA and CIS title are back together for another season. Hollie Nicol continues to skip the team with Danielle Inglis at the vice position, Laura Hickey at second and Hilary McDermott at lead. Rookie Sarah Wilkes is the official fifth player for the CIS championships, though the other players in the wings are third year Tracy O'Leary, second year Alex Hughes and first year Laura Crocker. Both the East and the West Sectionals were held in Waterloo this year hosted by the Hawks, as well as our neighbours down the road, the Waterloo Warriors. Both the men and women started off the season with a bang with multiple wins. Laurier opened with a face-off against the Brock Badgers. The women posted a solid 7-2 win over the Badgers, while despite an early 4-0 lead after the first end, the men could not match Brock's strong offence in the later ends of the game and dropped a 8-5 loss. Next, Laurier faced the Windsor Lancers in the second game of the competition. Early on in the game, the ladies found themselves down 3 points. The Hawks regrouped and came back from that three point deficit to win 10-8 in an extra end. The Laurier men came out with a stronger game against the Lancers and kept the score close until a crucial steal in the sixth end by Windsor. the purple and gold failed to get the deuce and the Lancers took the win with a 2-4 score. Laurier took on the Western Mustangs next. Both teams could not match the shot making of the Western teams. The women dropped their first game of the tournament with a 2-8 loss and the men lost a tough 5-9 game. The final game of the weekend was against our rivals from down the street, the Waterloo Warriors. The Hawks finished on a strong note with the women defeating Waterloo 8-3 and the men taking their first win of the tournament with a 5-3 final score. The Golden Hawks' second round of competition was the Crossovers hosted by Brock University. In the first draw, the ladies took on the Trent Excalibur and won 9-8 in a strong extra end victory. The ladies' second draw saw Laurier pick up their second win of the tournament with a 10-3 final score. The Hawks' third draw saw them lose 7-3 to the newest addition to the OUA, the Laurentian Voyageurs. The ladies' fourth and final draw started favorably with an early four-ender to earn an easy victory over the Queen's Golden Gaels 7-1 in four ends and finish regular season competition with a 6-2 record. On the men’s side the Hawks started off the competition on a strong note with a 7-4 win over Trent. The men lost their next game against a solid Toronto Varsity Blues team 7-4. Finding themselves in a must-win situation, the men pulled it together and defeated Laurentian 7-3. The team found their stride and defeated Queen's 4-3 in their fourth game of the weekend in an exciting extra end finish. The men ended their regular season with a 4-4 record. This left Laurier tied with Windsor for a spot in the OUA championship. The Hawks came out strong and defeated Windsor with a final score of 6-4.

With both teams qualifying for the OUA Championship, the squads made their way to Peterborough for the event. The ladies started off against the weekend against Laurentian and avenged their previOUA Championship ous loss posting a 7-4 win. Next, they faced the Western Mustangs. Still not able to capitalize in the W 7-4 (Laurentian) final end, the Hawks dropped a 9-55 loss. In the ladies' third game of the weekend with home ice L 9-5 (Western) advantage, Trent defeated the Hawks 6-4. Finding themselves in a similar situation to last year, the ladies had to play a tie breaker the next morning against Trent again. This time around, Laurier domL 6-4 (Trent) inated the game and pulled off an 8-2 win. In the semi final game against Laurentian, the women we W 8-2 (Trent) - TB tied going into the final end, but failed to steal the victory and ended gold medal hopes in a 6-3 loss. L 6-3 (Laurentian) - Semi The men started off against Brock in a repeat from the opening of Sectionals. This time, the team was ready and dominated the match. Eventually the Badgers succumbed to the Hawks' aggressive play and Laurier posted a 6-3 win. In the second game, Laurier met Western, one of their strongest rivals. The Hawks played the last end to steal and with a crucial hit and roll that the Mustangs could not match and Laurier claimed the victory with a 5-3 final score. With this win, the Hawks were guaranteed a berth to the gold medal game. Not fazed by their success, Laurier pulled out another 5-3 win against Queen's. In the gold medal match, the Hawks were pitted against the Western Mustangs for a reprise of last year's final. The game was a close affair between these two highly skilled teams, but a steal of two points in the fifth end by the Mustangs was the turning point in the game. The Hawks never recovered those points and lost the game 6-4 to bring home the silver.

Ken McCormack - Head Coach
Ken is a Certified Level 2 NCCP Curling instructor having had the opportunity to coach at 14 Ontario Provincial Championships. Entering his 6th year as our varsity curling Head Coach; the Golden Hawks have won Gold, Silver and Bronze with both the men and the women over the past 5 years. He also coached the men's team to the 24th Winter Universiade. Ken is an active curler, curling out of North Halton Golf & Country Club. He is very involved in the local community and presently is a Director and Chair of Finance at the Bennett Center, a Long Term Care facility. Ken and Helen live in Georgetown with their two daughters.
John Nicol - Assistant Coach
John is a certified Level 2 NCCP curling instructor having coached competitive teams for the past 11 years. His teams have won Bantam Girls and Junior Ladies Ontario Provincial Championships as well as Gold and Silver medals at the Ontario Winter games. John has continued to coach the ladies curling team for the 2009 season, as well as the ladies' team that won silver medals at the World Winter University Games held in Harbin, China. He and his wife Deborah reside in Markham and have two daughters.
Mike Anderson - Team Manager
Mike skipped the Golden Hawks to an OUA and CIS gold medal in 2008. He also skipped the Canadian team at the World Universiade in China this past February. Mike started his curling career at the Unionville Curling Club at age of six. Since then he has been a two time Ontario Champion (2006 Ontario Junior Mixed and 2002 Ontario Winter Games). In 2003, Anderson skipped team Ontario at the Canada Winter Games in Bathurst New Brunswick. This season Mike was named a OUA second team All-Star.
Bill Francis - Team Manager
Bill is a recent Laurier graduate with a degree in Geography. He played for the Golden Hawks for five seasons, winning the OUA Championship twice. Paul also won CIS gold in 2008 and represented Canada at the 24th Winter Universiade in Harbin, China this past February. He is a two-time Ontario Junior Men’s champion, competing at the National Championships in 2004 (4th) and 2006 (3rd), being named to the all-star teams in both years. Bill was also named a OUA first team All-Star last season. Bill has also won an Ontario Junior Mixed Championship (in 2005).

Laura Crocker Position: Alternate Height: 5’2" Year: 1 Hometown: Scarborough, ON.
Program: Psychology
Quick facts: This is Laura's first seson playing with the Golden Hawks. She is a promising addition to the team as a four time MVP of her high school curling team. One of the main players on the competitive circuit, Laura has had many provincial appearances with her best finish being the runner up in 2008 Junior Mixed Provincials.
Laura Hickey
Position: Second Height: 5'7" Year: 3 Program: Kin/Phys. Ed. Hometown: Toronto, ON. Quick facts: Laura was curling's Rookie of the Year in 2007. Now in her third season as a Golden Hawk, she has twice been named an OUA Second Team All-Star. Last season, Laura brought home an OUA gold and CIS gold. She also competed at the 24 Winter Universiade and won silver. Laura was the vice on the team representing Ontario at the 2007 Junior Nationals.
Alex Hughes Position: Alternate Height: 5’7" Year: 2 Hometown: Dundas, ON.
Program: Kin/Phys. Ed.
Quick facts: In her first year as a part of the Golden Hawks team in the 20072008 season, Alex won gold at the OUA. This year, Alex assisted the Hawks in winning the bronze medal. In 2006, Alex finished in third at the Bantum Girls Provincial Championship and won the right to compete at the Ontario Winter Games.

Danielle Inglis Position: Third Height: 5’3" Year: 3 Hometown: Kleinburg, ON.
Program: Sociology
Quick facts: Danielle is in her second season of playing for the Hawks. Last year, she won the gold at OUAs and gold at CIS. This past year, Danielle represented Canada at the 24 Winter Universiade and brought home the silver medal. In 2006, Danielle skipped her team to the OFSAA gold medal. She also skipped Team Ontario at the Canadian Junior National championship in 2008.
Hilary McDermott Position: Lead Height: 5'9" Year: 3 Hometown: Guelph, ON.
Program: Kin./Phys. Ed.
Quick facts: In her first year as a Golden Hawk, Hilary was recognized as an OUA First Team All-Star and team Rookie of the Year. Hilary went on to win gold at OUA and CIS. Hilary also represented Canada at the 24 Winter Universiade and brought home the silver medal. Hilary was named Laurier Athlete of the Week in 2009.
Hollie Nicol
Position: Skip Height: 5'9" Year: 4 Program: Kin./Phys. Ed. Hometown: Markham, ON. Quick facts: This veteran Golden Hawk has skipped the team for the past four seasons. Holie has now won a bronze, silver and gold at the OUA level for the Hawks.Hollie is a three time team MVP and four time Laurier Athlete of the Week. Hollie also competed at the Universiade and won silver. She also skipped the Ontario team in the 2007 Canadian Juniors.

Tracy O’Leary Position: Alternate Height: 5'8" Year: 3 Hometown: Ajax, ON.
Program: Kin./Phys. Ed.
Quick facts: Tracy is currently in her third year with the Golden Hawks. She has won both a silver and a gold at the OUA level in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Tracy represented Ontario as a second in 2008 at the Canadian Juniors in Sault Ste. Marie. Tracy also skipped her high school team to a couple OFSAA championships.

Position: Fifth Height: 5'9" Year: 1 Program: Psychology Hometown: Scarborough, ON. Quick facts: This year, Sarah was part of the Golden Hawk squad that brought home the OUA bronze this year. Sarah has been a strong competitor on the junior curling circuit for many years and has three provincials appearances under her belt with the most recent being skipping her team at the 2009 Junior Women's Provincial.

Position: Third Height: 5'10" Year: 4 Program: Biology Hometown: Sudbury, ON Quick facts: A veteran 4th year player on the team, Paul has been part of the team that brought home the gold twice (2006 and 2008) and won the silver in 2009. In 2008, Paul won the CIS nationals and competed in the Winter Universiade this past February. Paul was named to the 2008 OUA 1st Team All Star and the CIS All Canadian teams, as well as receiving the award for OUA Academic All-star in 2006.

Position: Fifth Height: 5’10" Year: 2 Program: Political Science Hometown: Fort Frances, ON Quick facts: In his first year on the team, Dave won OUA gold in 2008. In 2009, Dave was part of the Golden Hawks team that brought home the silver. Dave skipped his team to the 2007 NWOSSAA championship. As a vice, he participated in the Northern Ontario Junior Provincials in 2007.
Shane Konings Position: Second Height: 6’0" Year: 1 Hometown: Gowanston, ON.
Program: Business
Quick facts: As one of the newest additions to the Golden Hawk squad, Shane has already left his mark by winning the OUA silver this year. He is also a regular on the competitive junior circuit being a provincial finalist for Bantam Boys in 2006 and in Junior Mixed in 2009.

Position: Lead Height: 6’0" Year: 1 Program: Sociology Hometown: Unionville, ON Quick facts: Matt is in his first year as a Golden Hawk. He threw lead stones en route to the OUA silver medal. Matt brings confidence and experience to this years edition of the men's curling team. He is a 3 time high school Most Valuable Player and has had a fourth place finish at OFSAA in 2008.
Matthew Mapletoft Position: Skip Height: 5'9" Year: 2 Hometown: Wallaceburg, ON.
Program: Political Science
Quick facts: Only in his second year, Matt leads the Golden Hawk squad in the skip position. In 2008, Matt won OUA and CIS gold throwing lead. Matt also competed in the 24 Winter Universiade in Harbin, China this past February. He was the skip of the 2006 Bantam Boys Provincial Championship team.
Scott McGregor Position: Alternate Height: 6'3" Year: 2 Hometown: Exeter, ON.
Program: Business
Quick facts: Scott was part of the team that won OUA and CIS gold in 2008. He also repsresented Canada in the 24th Winter Universiade in Harbin, China this past February. This year, Scott was the vice on the team that won the 2009 Junior Men's Provincial title and represented Ontario at the 2009 Junior Nationals.

Position: Alternate Height: 6'0" Year: 1 Program: Biology Hometown: London, ON. Quick facts: A rookie to the team, Justin has already impressed by winning the OUA silver medal in 2009. He is a five time MVP for his curling team at South Secondary School. Justin was the runner up in his hometown of London for the high school competition.

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities after Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
