Golden Hawk Luncheons Each Thursday at 12 noon, Laurier hosts a media luncheon to announce Laurier Athletes of the Week, Football Players of the Game, as well as any other special honours to athletes. All media are encouraged to attend. Stadium Directions To reach Laurier from Highway 401, take exit 278B (coming from London) or 278 (coming from Toronto) and follow Highway 8 West to Highway 86 North Waterloo and continue to University Avenue; follow University Avenue West past campus to Albert Street. Turn left on Albert, then right on Seagram Drive. The Stadium is on the left hand side. Game Day Information One hour before the beginning of each game, media guides and game notes packages (game preview, lineups, current statistics, and depth charts) will be available in the stadiumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pressbox. The statistics will be available approximately 30 minutes after the game.

2002 OUTLOOK

2002 Golden Hawk Outlook The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawk football team finds itself with a similar schedule to last season, with the only difference being a match up against York instead of Ottawa. The OUA remains a ten-team league with an eightteam playoff format, which includes a quarterfinal game. With another year under their belt, the Hawks look to return to national prominence. OFFENSE Laurier’s offense returns eight starter’s from last year’s young squad. Also returning after a year of injury is starter receiver Chad MacAvelia. Through many of last season’s growing pains, the offense looks to play with consistency and score more points. Quarterbacks Last season was the first time in Laurier history that a freshman quarterback started every game from start to finish. The coaching staff knew that Ryan Pyear (Belleville, Centennial) was something special, so it was no surprise when Pyear was named the OUA Rookie of the Year. Third year player Chris Adams (North Bay, West Ferris) will backup Pyear as he has an excellent feel for the offense. Look for rookie Jamie Partington (Stoney Creek, Saltfleet) to challenge for

a dress spot. Running Backs If there is a position on offense that the Hawks have depth, it is at running back. During last season’s playoff game, freshman Nick Cameron (Norland, Fenelon Falls) tore up over 200 yards against Queen’s. During this training camp, Cameron has established himself as a hard-nosed, punishing tailback. Second year Bryon Hickey (Burlington, Notre Dame) will likely serve as the other running back position, as he is a more run / catch type of player. Rookie tailback Derek Medler (Kitchener, Preston) has had an impressive camp and looks to challenge for a starting spot. Last season’s starter, Alex Torrie (Owen Sound,

Tasse (Toronto, Central Tech) and Steven Glover (Georgetown, Bishop Reding). Wide Receivers With the return to a spread offense, the key will be a solid group of receivers. Leading the way will be 2000 OUA First-Team All-Star slotback Chad MacAvelia (Orangeville, Orangeville District). MacAvelia was out last year with a injury, but looks to pick up where he left off in 2000. Two second-year players who have made significant gains in the off-season and will be awarded starting spots are Andrew Agro (Burlington, Notre Dame) and Mike Maurice (Mississauga, Lorne Park). The last starting role is open, but it looks like Chris Scott (Guelph, St. James) will likely get the nod as he is the most experienced receiver. Other veterans competing for starting spots are Todd Galloway (Kitchener, Resurrection), Derek Cox (Petrolia, Lambton) and Geoff Keen (St. Catherines, Holy Cross). Rookies who have been turning heads and who have potential to dress are Joel Wright (Stoney Creek, Saltfleet), Wil Northcote (Barrie, Innisdale), and Wil Harris

Offensive Line The anchor of the offensive line will be 2001 First-Team OUA All-Star center Jeff Melis (Oshawa, Paul Dwyer). Beside Melis will be guards Owen Thompson (Scarborough, Cedarbrae) and Steven Skells (Waterloo, WCI). Ryan Jeffrey (Lyn, Brockville CI) returns for his third year as starting tackle and second year Mitch Zappatelli (Orleans, St. Matthew’s) will likely be awarded the other tackle position. Veterans competing for starting positions will be Bill Girt (Kitchener, Cameron Heights) and former tight end Dan McBride (Georgetown, Bishop Reding). Rookies looking to possibly dress are

Jon MacKinley (Sarnia, Northern) and Kyle Weston (Sarnia, St. Christopher). Kicking Game Surrey B.C. native Ed Becker (Surrey BC, North Delta) enters his fifth season as starting punter. Becker has been named OUA All-Star punter over many years and will continue to kick field goals and kickoffs. Becker has been working hard in the off-season and has improved his field goal percentage significantly during training camp. DEFENSE The Hawks return 9 starters from last year’s impressive defensive squad. The Hawks will continue to play their aggressive 4-3 scheme. Defensive Line The defensive line will see no changes to the starting line up from last season. Defensive ends Tony Bretney (Scarborough, Malvern) and Justin Shakell (Belleville, Moira) will continue to pressure opposing quarterbacks. 2001 FirstTeam OUA All-Star Josh Alexander (Kitchener, Eastwood) returns as the run stopper from the defensive tackle position. Beside Alexander will be veteran Matt Kruchak (Winnipeg, Holy Cross). Backing up this solid line-up will be veterans Adam Pyne (Toronto, Richview), Adrian Houwer (Cayuga, Cayuga HS) and Kyle Armour (Kitchener, Resurrection).

Linebacker Rohan Thompson looks to build upon his 2000 season where he led the team in tackles. Linebackers This year the Hawks feature one of the strongest linebacking corp in the conference. Outside linebackers Rohan Thompson (Mississauga, Streetsville) and Kevin MacNeill (London, Wilfrid Laurier) are both previous OUA All-Stars and look to strike fear in the hearts of the opposition. Tom Annett (Sault Ste. Marie, Sir James Dunn) is a fourth year veteran who will definitely make an impact from the middle linebacker position. In situations, the fourth linebacker will be Lee Maggiacomo (Cambridge, Jacob Hespeler) who filled in last season for the injured Rohan Thompson. Other dress spots will likely go to Jason Thomson (Cambridge, Preston), Jamie Cote (Kitchener, St. Mary’s), and Jesse Alexander (Kitchener, Eastwood). Defensive Backfield

Laurier’s defensive backfield returns with more experience, but will still go through some some growing pains. The leader of the group will be fifthyear veteran David Agro (Burlington, Notre Dame) who will start at free safety. To Agro’s right will be returning veterans halfback Ian Logan (Waterloo, WCI) and corner Conor Healey (Guelph, Our Lady of Lourdes). To Agro’s left will be halfback Jeff Smeaton (Brantford, North Park) and corner Ryan Brown (Cambridge, Jacob Hespeler) who are veterans starting for the first time. Veterans challenging for dress spots are Steve Frake (Etobicoke, Silverthorn) and Dave Wiwchar (Brampton, Mayfield). Rookie hopefuls are Nial Both (Kitchener, Cameron Heights), Blair Ryan (Halifax N.S., Q.E.H.), and Steve Surya (Burlington, Notre Dame). This year’s version of the Hawks will be much more improved from last season. Expect the same tenacious defense along with a more consistent offense. With so much parity in the OUA, each player must play as a team and be mentally and physically tough against every opponent they face.

Corner Conor Healey looks to have another solid year at the corner position.

Rick Zmich, Head Coach Rick Zmich (University of Ottawa, 1978-82) Ninth Year as Laurier Head Coach 41-21-1 Regular Season at Laurier compiled an impressive 41-21-1 (0.661) overall regular season record as Head Coach. Eight Golden Hawks were named OUA All-Stars with three being named to the first team. In eight seasons as Head Coach, Zmich has had the honour of coaching: a Hec Crighton, a Howard Mackie, and TSN Russ Jackson award winner, 18 All-Canadians, 80 League All-Stars, and his teams have reached the Yates Cup 4 times. Rick Zmich enters his ninth season as Head Coach of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks with optimism. The 2002 edition of the Hawks are a year older having gained valuable experience last season. Playing 16 new starters in 2001 provided some “short term pain” for “long term gain”. The program realized that it would be a challenge given the youth in the line up. All however, was not bleak. Posting a 3-5 record with last second losses to the Yates Cup Finalists (Ottawa and McMaster), WLU continued to improve finishing the year in Kingston with a heartbreaking defeat to Queen’s in the dying seconds. Individual highlights included Josh Alexander being awarded the TSN Russ Jackson Award for his academic and athletic prowess as well as his community involvement. He was Laurier’s first ever recipient of this prestigious award. Another first, Ryan Pyear became the first rookie quarterback in WLU history to start from day one and ultimately take every snap from centre. This feat helped Ryan garner the OUA Rookie of the Year award. At the end of the 2001 season, Zmich had

(1994-98), was nominated by the Hamilton Tiger Cats for CFL Rookie of the Year. In 2002, four players whom Zmich has coached are currently on CFL rosters. Past Golden Hawk defensive lineman, Kojo Millington, a First-Team CIS All-Canadian in ‘99 was selected to represent Canada (East) at the 75th annual East-West Shrine Bowl played at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Millington is the first Golden Hawk to ever play for Canada in the Shrine Bowl. A graduate of the University of Ottawa, Zmich received a degree in Honours Sociology. He played for the Ottawa Gee Gees from 1978-82. Zmich was nominated for the Hec Crighton Award twice (1980 and 1982), and won it in 1982. He was also named a CIAU First-Team All-Canadian at the quarterback position. In 1995, Zmich led the Golden Hawks to a 7-0-1 record and was named the CIAU Coach of the Year and was presented with the Frank Tindall Award. He is one of two people in CIAU/CIS History to win both the Hec Crighton and Frank Tindall awards. Coach Zmich has appeared in two Vanier Cups. The first as a player in 1980 while at the University of Ottawa, and the second as Offensive Coordinator of the 1991 Championship Golden Hawk team. Zmich feels that this year’s squad will

definitely be more improved from 2001. This team has focussed its attention to returning to the top of the league’s upper echelon. Hard work, team play and true grit certainly make up the persona of this year’s squad.

Rick Zmich On. . . The Challenges for 2002 Entering the 2002 season, our goal is to build upon our improved play during the latter part of 2001. With many new faces in the line-up, we were resigned to taking “baby steps” until our youthful squad gained maturity. Our main area of focus will be to replace Kevin Taylor (3 time OUA All-Star and 2001 All-Canadian) in the secondary, Mark Pateron (SB) and Ed Palasz (RT). Returning veterans on offense include Ed Becker (P), Alex Torrie (RB), Chad MacAvelia (REC) and Jeff Melis (OL). Defensively, our front sevent returns intact with the lone new starter being Tom Annett (MLB). Add to the mix sophomores, Ryan Pyear (QB), Andrew Agro (REC), Nick Cameron (RB), Mike Maurice (REC), Mitch Zapatelli (OL), Conor Healy (DB) and Ian Logan (DB) as significant keys to the season. On Last Season Finishing 8-2 overall and reaching the conReplacing many starts from 2000 and 2001 Yates Cup finalist teams was certainly a challenge. However, the steady progress by a youthful offense and the consistently strong play of Coach Jeffries defence allowed us to enjoy a measure of success. With close hard fought losses to Ottawa and McMaster in the last minute of play, this youthful bunch proved that they were “growing up” quickly. In the first round of the playoffs, the Hawks surrendered to the Golden Gaels in Kingston 29-27 exhibiting tremendous effort and desire in the contest. Highlights included Josh Alexander being TSN Russ Jackson Award winner for his academic and athletic prowess as well as his community involvement. Ryan Pyear being named OUA Rookie of the Year and took every single offensive snap for the Hawks.

In all eight Hawks were named as OUA AllStars. The attitude of this year’s squad is one of determination to succeed. These players have invested considerable time in improving last season’s record. Look for a quick and physical Hawk squad this fall. On the Off-season Our athletes are expected to train twice weekly as a team with an additional 20 hours monthly in the weight room. This past off-season, Coach Gabler administered the Bringham Young Strength and Conditioning Program to our athletes with outstanding results. More than 30 Golden Hawk players have reached the 300 bench level and 1000 pound clubs. During the summer months our players who stayed in Waterloo (approximately 30), participated in an advanced Speed Development Program led by Canada’s Olympic Head Track and Field Coach Brent McFarland. Coach McFarland is recognized by many as one of the leading authorities in Sprint Development in North America. Again, the results posted at August testing were vastly improved. Fourteen players run under 4.6 in the 40 yard sprint. On Laurier Academics Our players are students first and athletes second. This past year we instituted a study-hall program for all first year players. Weekly meetings with myself allowed for tutoring, seminars and councelling sessions to be arranged. I am very pourd to say that Josh Alexander (Honours Business) and Jeff Melis (Honours Kinesiology) both achieved Adademic All-Canadian status in 2000/2001. Look for additional members of the Hawks to join this prestigous club in 2001/2002.

Reaction to Being Named Head Coach at Wilfrid Laurier I was thrilled and excited with the challenge of guiding a program that had been built to national prominence by Tuffy Knight and Rich Newbrough. Rich Newbrough allowed me the opportunity to apprentice under his leadership and grow as a coach. Both Tuffy and Rich have been influential in my development as Head Coach. On Coaching Bill Kubas Bill was the ultimate Field General. He possessed all the physical attributes and cerebral ability to be the best at his craft. He was respected by all. His toughness and competitive drive was admired by all associated with the Hawk’s program. Bill Kubas was one of the greatest athletes to ever play Canadian College Football. On Coaching Stefan Ptaszek Stef was the consummate student-athlete. He combined tremendous athletic ability with strong dedication to his studies in the classroom. #14 was definitely an individual who enriched our campus for 5 years. His career records in receptions, yardage and TD’s combined with an Honours Business Degree clearly indicates that an individual can excel inside and outside of the classroom. One should also note Stefan Ptaszek was a Head Resident during two of his years at Laurier. The combination of both a “Kubas and Ptaszek” may never be seen again in the OUA. They are both truly champions.

bowl-a-thon’s, Big Brother’s Day at Games and Hosting the Annual Christmas Party. In both 1999 and 2000, there were over 300 people in attendance for this event at our Athletic Complex. In 1999, “the Hawks” developed a partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In developing the “Heart Healthy Hero Program”, we now carry the message of the Foundation into over 50 area elementary schools. Our goal is to spread the “Laurier Spirit” into the community and make a difference. We are very pleased that our athletes graduate with an opportunity to succeed in football while helping others. Filling the Laurier Tradition WLU has a rich tradition of winning football. This program has been consistently winning for decades. The people associated with the program from past generations are second to none in this country in terms of loyalty and dedication. Laurier’s Atmosphere Our students, faculty, staff, administration and alumni are all part of the Golden Hawk Family. We are a small school with a big football appetite. Our success on the field of play depends heavily on these people. The Game Day at Laurier is an event first and contest second. Football is a topic of interest all year.

Gary Jeffries, Defensive Coordinator

Gary Jeffries enters his 25th season as part of the Golden Hawk football coaching staff. In High School, Jeffries played a variety of sports for Nelson H.S., as well as Jr. B hockey in Burlington. From 1966-1968 he played football and hockey at the University of Guelph. It was there that he was recognized as the Athlete of the Year in 1967. While at University, Gary also played professional baseball with the Detroit Tigers for three years. It was not until 1970 that Gary Jeffries would find his home at Wilfrid Laurier University. He played football for 2 years from 1970-1971 where he was an All-Star Defensive Half-Back and Rookie of the Year. After his career at Laurier he was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts but later signed with the Hamilton Tigercats. In 1972 he was hired at WLU as an assistant football coach and recreation director. From 1984-1988 Jeffries was also the women’s basketball coach at WLU. In 1989 he took a break from football and coached the men’s basketball team until 1996. In 1994

Rick Zmich convinced Jeffries to return to the game which he loves so much. Gary has coached 24 football seasons at WLU, with 16 as Defensive Coordinator. In those years he has coached in 15 Yates Cups, has 135 total victories, coached 25 AllCanadian defensive players and has had the number one defense in the country 6 times (‘73, ‘75, ‘79, ‘87, ‘88, ‘95). Coach Jeffries has coached close to 600 games in total for WLU (both Football and Basketball), yet his passion for the game remains undying. Wally enters his fourth year as the full time Assistant Coach at Laurier. Wally will move to the defensive side of the ball this season after coaching on the offensive side for the previous 9 years. He will coach a young group of defensive backs, with only 3 starters and 6 total returning players. Wally continues to work alongside Coach Zmich with the recruiting effort and coordinates the Golden Hawkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s off-season Strength and Conditioning program. He is strongly involved with the fundraising efforts of the 5th Quarter Club coordinating the Friends of Golden Hawk Football Dinner and the Adopt-a-Golden Hawk Program. Wally began his coaching career at Centennial High School in Guelph in 1993. In 1995, he joined the coaching staff at the University of Guelph where he enjoyed a successful playing career as a quarterback winning two Yates Cups (1992 and 1996). During his four years as a coach with the Gryphons, Wally coached the quarterbacks, running backs and served as Offensive Coordinator in 1997 and 1998. Wally resides in Waterloo with his wife

Al is a former CIAU football player at Guelph where he was part of the 1984 National Championship team. While there, Anonech was honoured as a Second-Team All-Canadian. This will be his eighth season as part of the Hawk coaching staff. Al is now a teacher at St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s-Kilmarnock School in Breslau.

Coach Beck enters his eighth season as part of the Laurier coaching staff. He is a graduate of the University of Waterloo where he played on the defensive line. Blaine is a teacher at Glenview Park Secondary.

Scott enters his ninth season as part of the Golden Hawk coaching staff. He played for the Hawks from 1974-76 after coming to Laurier from Dayton College. Campbell has coached with North Park Collegiate and the Brantford Bisons of the Ontario Junior Football Conference.

Brian is in his second year with the Golden Hawk coaching staff, after many years of coaching highschool football at Applewood Heights School in Mississauga. Coach Canton also coached at York University for 4 years as the defensive line coach. Brian is also a graduate of WLU.

Maki enters his third year with the Golden Hawks. He was the leading receiver at St. Francis Xavier from 1987-90. He was also drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos in 1990. After the CFL, he coached the receivers at St. F.X. Maki is now a teacher at St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s-Kilmarnock School in Breslau.

Tuffy begins his third season as offensive line coach. Tuffy played at Fairmont State in West Virginia, then came up to WLU where he was Head Coach for 18 years. After coaching the University of Waterloo for 11 years, he retired from the head coaching job. Tuffy still holds the record for most wins by a coach in the CIS with 154.

This is Mike’s third year with the Hawks after playing from 1966-70 as a linebacker. In 1969 he was named a First-Team All-Canadian for the linebacker position. Mike is a retired principal from Saint Mary’s high school in Woodstock.

Rich returns for this second season since retiring in 1993. Newbrough came to Laurier in 1968 and was an assistant coach for 16 years. In 1984, Rich was named Head Coach and served for 10 years where he compiled a 55-33 record. During his years of coaching, he was on six Championship teams, including the 1991 National Championship squad.

Ron is in his fourth year coaching the Golden Hawks. He played in the late 80’s and was on the 1987 Yates Cup championship team. In 1989 Ron was named an OUA First-Team AllStar Linebacker and team MVP. Ron is a teacher and head football coach at Eastwood Collegiate high school in Kitchener.

Andy is in his fourth year as a full-time athletic therapist after spending two years on the Toronto Argonaut athletic therapy staff. A native of Owen Sound, Andy earned his Bachelors Degree in Physical Education from WLU in 1995. Andy then attended Sheridan College and graduated in 1998 with a diploma in Sports Injury Management. Andy takes a key interest in the strength and conditioning aspect of the football team by working with many players off the field. He is a certified member of the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association, and the National Strength and Conditioning Commission. Kevin graduated from Ottawa University with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Human Kinetics. Kevin has a wide variety of experience in the sport field, with stops at DC United of the MLS in Washington, as well as the Vanier Cup Game Operations manager for the 2000 Vanier Cup. At WLU Kevin manages University Stadium and oversees all Golden Hawk athletic events.

Chuck has been assisting the football equipment staff on the sidelines for about 29 years. He was a student at WLU, where he was the manager for the basketball team. Chuck is a retired school teacher, who now commits most of his time to the Laurier Football Team

“Hawks Lose in London” by Paul Caporicci The Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks football team traveled to London to take on the #5 ranked University of Western Ontario Mustangs on Saturday. Things just didn’t seem to be working for the Hawks as they lost 35-10.

Quarterback Ryan Pyear had a solid performance completing 11 of his 19 passes for 150 yards. Pyear had his first CIS touchdown pass and also threw one interception. In addition, Ryan had 15 yards on two scampers.

“Golden Hawks Take Out Blues” by Ari Grossman In the fourth week of CIS Football, the Laurier Golden Hawks (Now: 2-2) travelled to Toronto (Now: 0-4) to match up against the U of T Varsity Blues for the 34th time in history. The momentum of the game moved back and forth, however, the Hawks came out on top with a final score of 19 to 10. The Hawks started off early in the first quarter with a great 3 play drive lead by Ryan Pyear (#7) - who rushed for 29 of those yards. Only a few seconds later Alex Torrie (#27) was able to run into the end zone to put the Hawks on the board. Becker’s convert was good to make the score 7-0. Toronto had an attempt to put some points on the board however, kicker; George Chilakos wasn’t able to put it in, as he hit the goalpost on a 39-yard attempted field goal. The beginning of the second was lead by a

bad snap for Toronto where Chilakos conceded the safety to put 2 more points on the board for the Golden Hawks. This time however, Toronto would react by moving the ball 60 yards to put the Blues on the board making the score 9-7. Halfway through the third quarter, the U of T Blues were able to take a drive to the 23 yard line where Chilakos was able to put up a good field goal and make the score 10-9 in favour of the Blues. Hawks battle the #4 CIS Ranked McMaster Mauraders. The game was expected to lean one way, however it was close, as both teams had missed opportunities. There were a total of two touchdowns in the game – both belonging to Mac, including a 2-yard run by Kojo Aidoo and an 8-yard pass to Greg Muldoon. Otherwise the game lay in the hands of the kickers. The second half saw much in the favour of the Golden Gaels. The Gael’s defense pressured Hawk quarterback Ryan Pyear all day long.

Kevin MacNeill had a solid game for the Hawks amassing 11 total tackles (9 solo, 2 assisted) and a sack.

Quarterback Tom Dennison was able to connect with both Sean McKinnon with a 13-yard pass for a touchdown. Shortly after in an act of deja vu, Dennison threw a 25 yard pass to James Levac to make the score 19-8. Laurier battled hard but were unable to

“Gee Gees Squeak By Hawks” by Ari Grossman Kicker Jeff Lee-Yaw kicked the University of Ottawa GeeGees to victory with two field goals in the fourth quarter to beat Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks 16-14. University of Ottawa Runningback J.P Davilmar opened the game’s scoring with a seven yard touchdown run early in the first quarter but that would be the last the Gee-Gees would see of the endzone. The Laurier defense managed to contain a battered Ottawa offense. Late in the first quarter the Golden Hawks recovered a punt in Gee-Gees territory that lead to a Ryan Pyear touchdown pass to Juan

Scott at the start of the second quarter. Halftime score had the two teams knotted at 10-10. In the fourth quarter the Hawks found themselves leading the Gee-Gees after Ottawa conceded two safeties to the Golden Hawks. With the Ottawa offense sputtering the defense kept the Gee-Gees in the game.

Guelph’s Norm Nasser put all of their points on the board, hitting 4 of 5 field goals including a 52-yarder and one single off of the attempted. The quarterback’s – Ryan Pyear (WLU) and Tyson Beach (UG) both played good games considering the great defences that they faced. As a result of the defences, both teams kept the balls on the ground and made it a running game. Ryan Pyear rushed the ball 83 yards on his own and relied on several others for the extra yards. Jason Trickovic moved the ball for the Gryphons gaining 51 yards over

“Hawks Season Ends with 9 Seconds Left On Clocks” by Ari Grossman The first playoff game for the ‘rebuilding year’ was an exciting one at Richardson Stadium in Kingston as the Hawks fell to the Golden Gaels in the final 9 seconds of the game. The score of game was 29-27 for the Gaels. Laurier started the first quarter by scoring a single on the first kick of the game. Following that up was Matt Babel’s 32-yard touchdown that gave the Hawks an 8-0 lead. Also at the end of the quarter was Ed Becker’s field goal. Going into the second, the Hawks changed sides and now were facing the tough Kingston

Tailback Marvin Williams got the Hawk running game going at the start of the game. He ended with 91 yards.

The fourth quarter by far was the nail biter; the Golden Gaels added a touchdown and missed the convert but then followed up with a 65-yard pass to James MacLean (where once again the convert was missed) who put the Gaels ahead for the first time of the game. Responding to the threat was once again Nick Cameron who was able to move the ball for another touchdown. A two-point convert was attempted to make sure the Hawks had their win, however the attempt failed and Hawks remained up by 5. With only 9 seconds left in the game,

Over the season the Hawks offense grew from an inexperienced group of individuals to a cohesive unit. They ended up with 423 yards of offense against Queen’s.

David “Tuffy” Knight is a legend in the history of OUA football. Tuffy holds the all-time CIAU record for most wins by a coach.

CHAMPIONSHIPS

Championships Vanier Cup 1966 St. F.X. 40 Waterloo Lutheran 14 St. Francis Xavier quarterback Terry Dolan marshalled a 40-14 victory over Waterloo Lutheran (now Wilfrid Laurier) in the second and final invitational Vanier Cup Game. Dolan completed 12 out of 19 passes for 4 touchdowns and 284 yards. Receiver Terry Gorman caught 6 of them for 131 yards and 3 TDs, setting a Vanier Cup record and earning the Ted Morris Trophy. 1968 Queen’s 42 Waterloo Lutheran 14 Queen’s rambled to a 42-14 romp over Waterloo Lutheran, utilizing powerful aerial and ground attacks. On the ground it was Keith Eaman running for 93 yards and 2 TDs and Don McIntyre was on the receiving end of two of three Don Bayne TD passes. Bayne finished the game with 250 yards passing and was selected MVP. 1972 Alberta 20 Waterloo Lutheran 7 The Cup went West again as Alberta defeated Waterloo Lutheran 20-7. The Golden Bears used three quarterbacks to secure the win with appearances by Gary Weisbrot, Terry Cairnes and Roy Beechey. Waterloo Lutheran’s Gerry Blacker scored a touchdown and rushed for 134 yards in a solid performance as the Golden Hawks suffered their third Vanier Cup loss. 1991 Laurier 25 Mt. Allison 18 The Laurier Golden Hawks took home the Vanier Cup for the first time with a 25-18 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties before more than 30,000 fans at the SkyDome. Laurier running back Andy Cecchini carried 22 times for 130 yards and tied a Vanier Cup record with three touchdowns. The Golden Hawks, OUA and Churchill Bowl champions, jumped out to an early 11-0 lead in the first quarter as Cecchini ran one yard for his first touchdown. The AUAA champion Mounties cut the margin to a converted touchdown by halftime on a 38-yard field goal and a 28-yard single by Eric Deegan. Laurier took a large lead in the third quarter on a two-yard run by Cecchini and a 19-yard pass from QB Bill Kubas to Cecchini to make the score 24-4. The Mounties, however, staged a spirited comeback as Grant Keaney ran 27 yards for a touchdown and slotback Mark Huys caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Sean Hickey. The Laurier defense tightened up late in the game and preserved the victory. Cecchini won the Ted Morris Trophy as the game’s outstanding player.

The entertainment factor within the city is very alive. Take a drive up to Conestoga Mall for some shopping or stop by the new Galaxy Theatres to see a flick. The bar scene on University Avenue is the place to be in the evenings with choices of Fiasco’s, Loose Change, Molly Bloom’s and McGuiness. Recreation in Waterloo is on the rise with the new addition of RIM Park located off University Avenue East. This new 500-acre recreational facility will house 18 outdoor playing fields and the first municipal 18-hole golf course. Also included is a Multi-Use Recreational facility which houses 4 Olympic size ice rinks, 2 double gymnasiums and much more. Closer in proximity to the universities is the Waterloo Recreation Complex, a facility that includes an Olympic size ice rink, indoor running track and a swimming pool…home of Golden Hawks hockey. Waterloo is no doubt a great place to live. As a key center in Canada’s Technology Triangle, the place to go for a famous Oktoberfest sausage, or the place to study for a PhD or Mba Waterloo is the city of choice.

Since 1911, the Golden Hawk drive and desire have led our teams to the top of the OUA standings. The commitment to athletic achievement is continually coupled with academic excellence resulting in maintaining the reputation of being such a quality institution. It is the belief that being a student athlete is a total package with many hours spent in practice and games as well as studying and ultimately receiving a degree. Within the dedication shared by Laurier Athletics to create one of the top athletic programs in the country, there are many resources for our athletes to take advantage of. Included in these resources is the Athletic Complex. With its Olympic size pool, weight-exercise rooms and the Athletic Therapy office, the A.C. definitely caters to its athletes. The other athletic facility, University Stadium is located off campus. It has one gym and it features one of the few artificial turf fields at an Ontario University. Academic excellence on our teams is made a main priority so athletic study hall is a mandatory component of an athlete’s weekly schedule. The Academic All-Canadian award is another motivational method for Athletics to award those athletes who work exceptionally hard on their studies as well as their personal athletic achievements. of the 2000-2001 year will give our women’s lacrosse team and our men’s soccer team something to work toward in their next season. In the final game of the OUA championship, the women’s lacrosse team took the victory over U of T with a final score of 10-9 in the last few minutes of the game. They were named the provincial lacrosse champions and with their solid coaching and team determination, they are on the road for certain success once again. Men’s soccer made their mark on the national university soccer stage with the strong win over St. Mary’s University by a score of 6 - 5. Talented athletes, quality coaching and winning the national championship title will no doubt be strong motivating factors in their up coming season. Having quite a prestigious program, Laurier Football has been a Yates Cup finalist for the past two years and only missed the playoffs 3 times in the past 40 years. All of the Golden Hawk varsity teams are striving to be the best, making the colors purple and gold known wherever they play. It is the common goal of Wilfrid Laurier University to prepare each individual for life after Laurier. Within this goal is the attitude that participating in any extracurricular activity, varsity or not will prove to enrich the university experience and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Dr. Robert Rosehart, President

Dr. Rosehart is Chair, Ontario Commission on Interuniversity Athletics. Other assignments include: Member of Council of Ontario Universities - Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Working Group on University Research, and appointed chairman of Ontario Advisory Committee on Resource Dependent Communities. Serves as a member of the Region of Waterloo, Economic Development Corporation and Selection Committee for the Amethyst Awards, Government of Ontario.

Bob Rosehart is President and Vice-Chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University. He assumed this position on September 1, 1997, having served the previous thirteen years as President and Vice-Chancellor of Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. Wilfrid Laurier University enrols over 7,500 full-time undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculties of Arts and Science, Music, Social Work and the School of Business and Economics. It is known for its attention to students as individuals, its academic excellence, scholarly research and its extra-curricular activities including athletic and recreational programs. Born in Owen Sound, Ontario, Bob Rosehart holds a B.A. Sc., M.A. Sc., and PhD degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Waterloo. He was a professor of chemical engineering at Lakehead University during the 1970â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, prior to beginning his administrative career as Dean of Lakeheadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s University Schools in 1977. His interests are in economic development, science and technology policy, and government policy, and he has served as an environmental and public policy consultant to both the federal and provincial governments.

DEAN OF STUDENTS

David McMurray, Dean of Students

David McMurray is Assistant Vice-President Student Services and Dean of Students at Wilfrid Laurier University. He assumed this position July 1, 1997 after a career in student services at the University of Windsor. He has served as Chair of the Ontario Committee on Student Affairs, has been President of the Student Affairs and Services Association, serves on the faculty of the Canadian Institute on Student Affairs and Services and is currently the President of the Canadian College and University Student Services Association. Born in Windsor, Ontario, David spent most of his early days growing up in Thunder Bay Ontario where he excelled in many sports including football, basketball, baseball, track, tennis, hockey and skiing. A severe knee injury ended his active participation in sport. “I had a very difficult time giving up the contact variety of athletics but was able to make the adjustment to aerobic activities like swimming and long distance biking which have become life long.” Word has it he can handle the golf course pretty well too! David’s interest in Golden Hawks football goes back to two games he fondly recalls in the mid-seventies. While at the University of Wind-

sor he recalls an exceptional Lancer team that beat the Hawks in Windsor by a score of 63 to 7. That was extraordinary but short lived as a Tuffy Knight thoroughly motivated Hawks squad returned the following year turning the tables on the Lancers with a 77-6 thrashing. Since arriving at Laurier four years ago David is regularly seen in purple and gold. He not only never misses a game but has masterminded a strong strategy for the long-term success of Athletics and Recreation at Laurier. The keys to his strategy of “building champions” comes from investing in management, coaching, student athlete development, facilities, equipment, recruitment, program development, sponsorship and fundraising. The outcomes have been obvious in this short time and the Golden Hawks are in great shape for the future!

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Peter Baxter, Director of Athletics

Peter Baxter’s first two years as Athletic Director at Wilfrid Laurier University have provided a few noteworthy highlights. - He has shepherded the renewal of the Athletics Program at Laurier that raised the bar for all varsity sports to become competitive at the national level. Invest in People, Improve the Product, and Win is the vision that Varsity teams have followed and have resulted in improved performances across the board as well as Top Ten Rankings in 1999-2000 in Football, Men’s and Women’s Hockey, Swimming, and Men’s Soccer. Under his tenure Golden Hawk teams have won four OUA titles in Women’s Hockey, Women’s Curling, Women’s Field Lacrosse, and Men’s Soccer. Last year Coach Barry Maclean team also won the 2000 CIAU National Championship, a first for WLU Men’s Soccer. - He has overseen the $3 Million Athletic Complex renovation that has modernized the strength training and gymnasium facilities as well as creating a new Athletic therapy Clinic. Renovation to the Stadium has included the new football team room, Coaches’ Offices, and Film Room for the Golden Hawk Football Operations. - He has placed his own managerial

imprint on the University’s athletic Plant, reorganizing the administrative involvement with the 20 varsity teams to ensure accountability and results. Starting with the best possible raw material -- people with the best skills. Baxter has focused on acquiring Top quality coaches. In the past year Baxter has hired Wally Gabler Jr. in Football, as an Assistant to Head Coach Rick Zmich that has made an impact on our football team and recruiting efforts. Key hires in Women’s Basketball, Stu Julius, and Women’s Hockey, Bill Bowker has added national team experienced coaches instantly to those respective sports. Last year he created instant credibility for WLU Men’s Basketball with the appointment of Coach Peter Campbell formerly of Laurentian and currently the World University Games Head Coach for Canada. Dave McIntyre, an assistant coach on the 2001 Junior National Under 22 Women’s Volleyball, took the reigns of the women’s Volleyball team following a successful run by respected Russ Woloshyn. - Together with key Athletic Alumni, Baxter has established the Golden Hawk Club and it’s sport chapters including the 5th Quarter Club for Football. Last year’s meaningful project of the Laurier Athletics Website is an example of the commitment the Athletic Alumni and the Athletic Department have achieved -- communication vehicle for alumni and friends to keep up to date with the Golden Hawk Program. - He assisted Golden Hawk Swim Coach Dean Boles in establishing the National Swim Center for Ontario at Wilfrid Laurier. - He has seen a record number of Golden Hawk student athletes earn honours both on the field and in the classroom. In 1998-99, 17 Golden Hawks earned OUA and CIAU Academic All-Canadian Honours compared to 30 Golden hawks in 2000-01. - He has seen the addition of Women’s Rugby and Women’s Lacrosse to Varsity Status that began OUA play in 1999.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

- He has quickly found himself in the midst of the OUA and CIAU league mix as a member of the OUA Executive Committee and as Chair of the 2001 CIAU University Cup Hockey held in Kitchener. Last year he negotiated and initially produced the first radio show for OUA, “The University Sport Report” with host David Grossman heard weekly Sunday mornings on the FAN 590 showcasing studentathletes across all sports. As well, Peter currently is the OUA Convenor for Football. The Valedictorian for his ‘82 Physical and Health Education Class at U of T, this former Executive with the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) and more recently former Director of Athletics and Recreation at the University of Toronto at Mississauga (Erindale College), brought a wealth of experience in athletic administration, facility management, and finance to his new role as the new Boss Hawk at Wilfrid Laurier. At U of T’s Erindale College, Baxter convinced the Toronto Argonauts to establish their Football Operations on the back of his football field, a deal worth $1,000,000 to Erindale College. A $1,000,000 complex was constructed the summer of 1996 at Erindale that housed the team’s dressing room, athletic therapy, and coaches’ offices for the entire year. Baxter not only worked with Don Mathews and his coaching staff day to day but also was able to be part of two Grey Cup Championship years for the Argos. Argo President Bob Nicholson honored Baxter for his support to the Argonaut Organization. Looking for the challenge of winning a Vanier Cup, Baxter set his sights on Laurier with its rich football tradition. Baxter has maintained his relationship with the Toronto Argonauts who provide professional development opportunities and advice to our Golden Hawk football coaches, athletic therapists and equipment personnel.

The Montreal, Quebec native grew up around football. He started playing minor Tackle football at age 9 as a running back and quarterback on passing plays only. He delivered the Montreal Star newspaper to Alouette players Don Sweet and Wally Buono (Current Coach of the Calgary Stampeders) and attended all Alouette home games at the Autostade. In 1976, playing on the original Greenfield Park Packers, Baxter played Offensive Guard and was the place kicker on a Quebec Provincial Championship team. A recruiting letter from U of T Varsity Blues Coach Ron Murphy convinced Baxter to attend U of T. The Varsity Blues were looking for a new place kicker. Dean Dorsey (who later went on to the CFL) got the job that year but Baxter went on to play four years of football within the University of Toronto Tackle Football League, winning the then oldest football trophy in North America Mulock Cup as a Captain of the 1979 Physical Education team that defeated St. Michael’s College. During his first two years as Athletic Director at Erindale College, Baxter also served as Head Football Coach leading the Erindale Warriors to the Mulock Cup Final in both years. In 1994, when the downtown campus of U of T dropped the Mulock Cup League, Baxter served as Convener to ensure the Mulock Cup reached its 100th year. For over a decade Peter served as Football Official (Level 4), refereeing in some years over 120 football games within Toronto High School Boys Tackle and Girls Flag, as well as Provincial Senior Touch Football. Peter has officiated at Four Provincial and two National Senior Touch Football Championships. Baxter has served as Manager of the Canadian Senior Canoe Team in ‘86 and ‘87 and attended the Canadian Olympic Academy in 1988. He has earned awards for his contributions to High School Sport by OFSAA and he was granted the honour of placing the hood on Mr. Rick Hansen Honorary Degree Recipient, University of Toronto Convocation. Both he and wife Wendy reside in Waterloo with son Mark 9 years and daughter Haley 8 years.

After 25 years behind the bench of the men’s hockey team, Wayne stepped into his current role at the end of the 1998 season. He is responsible for managing the men’s and women’s intercollegiate athletic programs by working in conjunction with the coaches to ensure proper day-to-day operations of their teams. Wayne also co-ordinates the university resources to procure the best quality student athletes through managing programs such as the President’s task force on student athlete development.

Agnes joined the WLU staff in the Registrar’s Office in 1986 and then moved to the Athletic Department in 1994. Much of her work involves interacting on a regular basis with students, coaches, staff, faculty, alumni and community members. Agnes always enjoys watching our varsity athletes compete on the various teams.

Sue arrived at Laurier in 1989 after beginning her coaching/ teaching career at McMaster. She has a BSc. in Human Kinetics from Guelph and an MSc. from McMaster and is in the process of completing her Business Diploma at Laurier. She is a Level 3 NCCP certified Coach and instructs several activity courses in the Kin/PE program. After 15 years of coaching in the OUA, 8 of those with the Golden Hawks, Sue has recently retired to take on more responsibility on the Recreation side. These responsibilties include Intramurals, Instructional, Sport clubs, Fitness and customer services in the Athletic Complex (A.C.). With the help of several Student leaders, Sue hopes to deliver enhanced programming and improve communications between the Department and all A.C. customers.

After graduating from Laurier with a degree in Physical Education and Geography in 1995 Roly began his work tenure with the Department of Athletics and Recreation as the Operations Manager of University Stadium. In 1997 Roly moved into the role as Coordinator of Marketing and Promotions, and in 2000 his role was expanded to include Athletic Alumni responsibilities and is now the Development Officer for Athletics and Recreation. A former varsity rugby player at Laurier, Webster is responsible for coordinating marketing and fundraising for the athletic department as well as managing special projects such as the WLU athletics website.

Jamie graduated from the University of Guelph in 1986 with a degree in Biological and Biomedical Sciences. He then attended Sheridan College and graduated in 1989 with a diploma in Sports Injury Management and successfully completed the certification exam for the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association. Jamie came to Wilfrid Laurier University in 1993 from the Vancouver Canucks organization. In his time at WLU Jamie has been involved with the Hamilton Tiger Cats and the Pittsburgh Steelers as a training camp therapist, as well as with the National Swim Team as a support staff member. Jamie is also the chief therapist for the Kitchener-Waterloo National Swim Centre which is based in the WLU Athletic Complex.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Smittyâ&#x20AC;? retired from his position of Manager of Recreation in 1999 and will remain with the department to co-ordinate alumni events. During his 29-year tenure Don coached football, basketball, volleyball and golf for the Hawks. He also served as the interim Director of Athletics for the 1997-98 season. As a coach Smitty was highly successful with the basketball team, twice leading the team to a place in the National Championships.
