OUTLOOK September 29 - Laurier at Queen’s, 1:25pm Head Coach: Pat Sheahan 2006 Record: 4-4 (6th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Queen’s: 4-4 Current Streak: Laurier 3 wins, did not compete last season Outlook for 2007: Queen’s sees an offence that returns local receiver Rob Bagg for his final season. QB Danny Brannagan will be looking to continue to improve aer finishing third in the OUA in passing. In the backfield, Mike Giffin will play at running back who had career highs last season in carries and receptions. The offensive line will see seven players return and anchoring the line will be Sean O’Donnell and Cody Kennedy, and returning is Vince De Civita. Defensive coordinator Pat Tracey will have to deal with key losses at linebacker but leading the way will be Jimmy Allin and Ma Vickers. The linebacking core will have some experience in DJ Mulholland who was among the team leaders in solo tackles with 18. Tim Poffley started the last seven games of the season in 2006 at middle linebacker. The defensive line will be keyed by third year tackle Dee Sterling. Osie Ukwuoma and Pat Corbin return to make the defensive line one of the most veteran laden units in the league. Kicking duties will fall to Dan Village. Kevin Magee will be the long snapper for the Gaels along with seeing some duty on the defensive line. Rob Bagg will return kicks aer a 2006 season that saw him take back 58 punts for 412 yards.

September 3 - McMaster at Laurier, 2:00pm Head Coach: Stefan Ptaszek 2006 Record: 6-2 (4th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs McMaster: 38-12-1 Current Streak: Laurier 4 wins Outlook for 2007: The McMaster defense will have the return of lineman Chris Van Zeyl and Eugene Boakye. With Simon Binder and starter Jason Arakgi also returning at linebacker the defensive front looks solid. The defense will need to prove itself in the defensive secondary where senior Frank Longo is the only returning starter. On offense, starting QB Adam Archibald could be back pending his recovery. The fih year senior baled injuries much of the 2006 season forcing rookie QB Ryan Fantham into action. McMaster could receive a boost if CIS All-Canadian Kyle Koch is not activated off a CFL practice roster and is able to return for the season. Another position that has seen the Marauders continue to produce all-stars is at running back as Sadeghian led McMaster in rushing last season with 886 yds on 147 carries. McMaster might see contributions from both the full back and running back spots from Rob Mitchell and Ugonna Ihekwoaba as well as younger players who prove themselves during training camp. The receiving corps will continue to be led by Jordan Charter who had a break out season in 2006 catching 20 balls for 447 yards with 4 touchdowns. September 8 - Windsor at Laurier, 6:30pm Head Coach: Mike Morencie 2006 Record: 6-2 (3rd in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Windsor: 31-11-2 Current Streak: Windsor 1 win Outlook for 2007: Coming off a very solid season in 2006 (6-2 and a berth in the OUA Quarter Finals), the 2007 Lancer Football team is knocking on the door of the elite teams in the OUA. Coach Mike Morencie’s squad returns 14 starters from 2006, including Hec Crighton winner Daryl Stephenson. Stephenson is the two-time CIS rushing leader and is on pace to shaer the CIS all-time rushing record this season. Returning alongside Stephenson are veteran QB Dan Lumley, CIS All-Canadian WR Glenn MacKay, and OL Ma Morencie. These standouts are as good at their position as anyone in the country and will be a challenge for any opponent’s defense around the league. On the Lancer defense, the key will be how well their younger players are able to step in and fill the void le by graduated seniors Alan Weekes, Billy Moysiuk and Sasha Glavic.

October 6 - Laurier at Guelph, 1:00pm Head Coach: Kyle Walters 2006 Record: 2-5 (8th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Guelph: 34-12 Current Streak: Laurier 4 wins Outlook for 2007: The Gryphons will be relying on a young group of players to emerge as the team has undergone a transition over the past two seasons. Offensively, receivers Lorne Foster and Adam Slomer will be the only fih year players. On the other side of the ball, defensive player of the year Chris Decker and Chris Hladich will be the fih-year players providing leadership. The Gryphon offence will be counting on third year QB Justin Dunk. The emergence of RB Nick Fitzgibbon will take some of the pressure off of the passing game as the Gryphon offence will look to control the clock and limit the number of turnovers in 2007. The biggest area of improvement for the 2007 season will be on the offensive line. On the defensive side, a major overhaul to the secondary was the main challenge for the off season. The defense will need to dramatically improve the number of big plays given up from last season. Last season saw the emergence of rookie kicker Rob Maver. Rob was an OUA all-star punter in his first year and will be looking to add all star place kicker to his resume.

September 14 - Laurier at Toronto, 7:00pm Head Coach: Steve Howle 2006 Record: 0-8 (10th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Toronto: 26-11 Current Streak: Laurier 9 wins Outlook for 2007: The University of Toronto Varsity Blues will be looking for their first win in a long time as they start the 2007 campaign on Labour Day against the Waterloo Warriors. The blue and white have gone 6 years or 41 games without picking up a win. The last victory was at the former Varsity Stadium and the team looks to be breaking the goose egg with a win at the brand new 5,000 seat Varsity Stadium which just opened. Last year’s defense gave up the most offense in the province - 418 points in only 8 games of play. The team just had their largest training camp, with over 95 players in aendance to earn a spot on the roster. Quarterback David Hamilton looks like he will have the starting job but will be challenged by York transfer George Gretes and rookie Andrew Gillis. The team’s number one rookie is Adam Fehler from Toronto who will help the offense as a body on the line. Key players back for the team include Mike Goncalves, a defensive end who was draer by the Tiger Cats and Mark Stinson, a slotback who was the team’s most valuable player last season.

October 13 - Oawa at Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Denis Piché 2006 Record: 7-1 (1st in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Oawa: 9-9-1 Current Streak: Oawa 2 wins Outlook for 2007: Josh Sacobie will be back for his fourth year at the helm of the Gee-Gees offence in 2007. Last season, Sacobie became just the second Gee-Gee in team history to pass for 5000 career yards, throwing for 1860 yards in seven games. The receiving unit remains very much in tack from last season. David Crane returns for his fourth season aer leading Oawa in receiving yards in 2006 with a career high 32 catches for 596 yards. In offense, rookie Davie Mason averaged 93.3 yards rushing per game in his first season with the GeeGees while tailback Mike Donnelly emerged in the second half of the season as another threat in the backfield. He was the leading rusher in the 2006 Yates Cup championship running for 94-yards on 9 carries. Linebacker Joe Barnes is back to anchor the linebacking corps for the fourth season. Last year, Joe recorded 46 tackles in the regular season including a career high three sacks. Dan Kennedy and Mike Cornell are also expected to return to the Gee-Gees at the defensive end and linebacking positions.

September 22 - Waterloo at Laurier (Homecoming), 1:00pm Head Coach: Dennis McPhee 2006 Record: 3-5 (7th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Waterloo: 34-14-1 Current Streak: Laurier 4 wins Outlook for 2007: The Warriors look to make noise in the OUA football division this season under new head coach Dennis McPhee. Offensive co-ordinator and former CFL head coach, Joe Paopao will assist McPhee in the pursuit of guiding the Warriors to their first playoff berth in 4 years. The Warriors will be relying heavily on McPhee and Paopao to create team cohesiveness. Second year QB Evan Martin will use the valuable experience he gained last season to lead the Warriors. Wide Receiver, Sean Cowie entering his third year will look to lead the Warriors in receptions with 45 catches for 661 yards. Defensive lineman, Darren Kisinger returns for his final year of eligibility aer earning a spot on the 2006 first team all stars. Kisinger will be relied upon heavily to provide the necessary leadership on and off the field for the young Warrior squad.

October 20 - Laurier at York, 1:00pm Head Coach: Andrew McEvoy 2006 Record: 1-6 (9th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs York: 30-5 Current Streak: Laurier 4 wins Outlook for 2007: QB returnees Bart Zemanek and Mike Crabtree are expected to bale up to six other players, including Concordia transfer Michael Hya. Eight players also figure to be in the running for the starting running back role. The offensive strength likely will be the receiving corps. An outstanding rookie class enters the sophomore campaign looking to build off a strong 2006. Kevin Walsh, a first-team OUA all-star at kick returner and a second-teamer at receiver, leads that group. Up front, the offensive line is anchored by Dave Gauer. Janson Kenny and Boris Radulovic return to lead the defensive line, while Thomas and Chris Russell are two key linebackers. Robin Legault and Jerome Walker were solid in the secondary last season and are expected to be forces this year. Two additions at linebacker are Aaron Adusei and Marc Faria. Other first-year players to watch include defensive back Cleon Holmes, offensive lineman Brian Buckingham and defensive lineman Corey Pra.

The game was former quarterback Ryan Pyear’s first as offensive coordinator for the purple-and-gold.

“Hawks Pull Together Victory Over Guelph” “Laurier forces OT late in game and wins in overtime 24-17” by Ari Grossman

“It was a lot easier on the field than it is upstairs to call the plays,” he said. “I was more nervous then I have ever been but in the end we made our adjustments and finished the game with two points.”

GUELPH – It took overtime, but the nationally #4 ranked Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks were able to defeat the Guelph Gryphons 24-17 in front of 7,236 at Alumni Stadium in Guelph.

Chris Mamo led the kicking game, punting 13 times for 397 yards as well as three kickoffs for 158 yards. Mamo also kicked the 22-yard field goal which tied the game at 17s, forcing overtime.

The win marks the 18th consecutive regular season victory for the purple-and-gold. The Hawks haven’t lost to an OUA opponent since dropping the 2003 Yates Cup final to McMaster. Dante Luciani of Oakville, Ontario for his only carry of the aernoon, scored the winning touchdown on a two-yard run. The play was only the second of the overtime period with a pass completion to Will Northcote for 33 yards previous to it.

Laurier’s players of the game include: Yannick Carter for defense (3 solo tackles, 2 assisted, 2.5 sacks and a knockdown), Dustin Heap on special teams (9 punt returns for 108 yards and 2 kickoff returns for 30 yards) and Andy Baechler (6 receptions for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns) on offense.

Quarterback Jamie Partington, who takes over from 2005 firstteam all-Canadian and Vanier Cup MVP Ryan Pyear, started off the game completing only nine of 21 in the first half for 93 yards – including two interceptions. Seling down aer the halime break, the pivot from Stoney Creek connected on 13 of 22 for 192 yards including two TDs.

The Golden Hawks (1-0) host the Oawa Gee Gee’s (1-0) on Saturday, September 9th. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 2:07 pm. The game will be broadcast live on The Score television network as the premiere of University Rush 2006 as well as on 570 News – the official voice of the Golden Hawks.

“It took me a lile bit to sele down and get used to the job,” said fih-year Partington. “Once I remembered what I was doing and got comfortable, I started to have some fun.” Partington connected with Luciani six times for 60-yards but it was Andy Baechler of Ayr, Ontario who he found in the red zone. Baechler caught six passes as well for 95 yards including both of Laurier’s touchdowns in regulation. Local running back Ryan Lynch also saw the ball seveal times carrying 23 for 113yards. The Golden Hawk defense had an incredible performance in the game facing veteran Guelph QB Justin Dunk. Laurier was consistently forcing Dunk out of the pocket - linebacker Yannick Carter had two and a half sacks while safety Justin Phillips of Kitchener had two more. Dunk rushed six times for 46 yards. The Laurier defense made significant plays all aernoon including stopping the Guelph offense at the half-yard line on third and goal as well as three interceptions and many two-and-out plays throughout the game. “We did a lot of growing up today,” said Head Coach Gary Jeffries. “We had 14 new faces on the field and they stepped up to help us get the W(in).”

WATERLOO – A late kickoff return touchdown by Justin Wood-Roy was enough to snap the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks conference winning streak at 21 games. The 29-19 loss was played out in front of 2,090 fans at University Stadium – as they saw their Hawks lose for the first time on home turf since a 26-23 loss to Queen’s on October 11, 2003.

within a field goal to tie the game. It was Heap’s first ever reception in Purple and Gold. With 36 seconds le, the Hawks tried a desperation on-side kick. Just as the ball looked as if it was going to hit and bounce out of bounds, it was smartly grabbed by Oawa’s Justin Wood-Roy, who had nothing but open field in front of him to seal the win for Oawa – their first against the Hawks in the past six aempts. “Oawa has a great team, they deserve a lot of credit,” said Coach Jeffries.

The game also marked the first time since the 2004 Uteck Bowl against Laval (a 30-11 loss) that any team has put up at least 29 points against this defense. “Like any loss, you have to take it as a learning experience,” said Head Coach Gary Jeffries following the game. “We learned a lot about what we need to do going forward and how we can improve this football club.”

The nationally fih ranked Golden Hawks (1-1) will try to rebound next week when they play in Toronto against the York Lions (0-1). Meanwhile the fourth ranked Gee-Gee’s (20) look to build on their impressive victory next week as they play host to the McMaster Marauders (2-0).

Laurier’s Chris Mamo was 4 for 4 on field goals, while Oawa’s Ara Tchobanian made good on his only aempt – as the first half was contested between the kickers. It wasn’t until five minutes into the third quarter when Oawa’s Ma Edgeworth ended the field goal-fest with the first major of the game, pulling the Gee-Gee’s to within two points of the Hawks, 12-10. With the Hawks ready to answer, quarterback Jamie Partington hit wide out Will Northcote for a short, who was met immediately by an Oawa defender, forcing a fumble. On the very next play quarterback and OUA second-team all-star Joshua Sacobie connected with Adam Nicholson on a 43-yard touchdown, just one minute and 39 seconds aer Edgeworth’s score that gave Oawa their first lead of the game, and they didn’t look back from there. Baling poor field position and consistent two and outs on offense, the usually reliable Hawk defense was forced to stay on the field longer. Oawa opted to pound the ball with their running game, handing off a total of 33 times for 195 yards. Running back Davie Masson led the way with a quiet 153 yards on 23 carries. Down 22-12, the Hawks mounted a late game comeback. With less than two minutes le, Jamie Partington starting moving the ball in the air, as the Hawks entered Gee-Gee territory. Freshman Taurean Allen and veteran Jesse Alexander each intercepted quarterback Bart Zemanek. The York quarterback connected on only 15 of his 35 aempts for 185 yards and was sacked four times – by Yannick Carter, Jesse Alexander, Andrew Fla and James Cranston. Jahmeeks Beckford led all defenders with six tackles, while Alexander continues to lead the league adding four more for a total of 24 this season.

TORONTO – Receiver Dante Luciani scored three touchdowns as the defending Vanier Cup champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (2-1) crushed the York Lions (0-3) 24-0. The shutout is the first for the Golden Hawk defence since the 2005 opener where the Hawks blanked Queen’s 45-0. With 37 seconds remaining in the first half of the game, Luciani caught a nine-yard pass from Jamie Partington for the first major of the game. The third year receiver from Oakville finished the game picking up two more touchdowns – one on a 16-yard rush and the other on a short-yardage quarterback sneak. “It felt good to get the ball into the end zone today,” said the 6-foot receiver. “We’ve le too many points on the field so far this season. This game shows that our offence can put points on the board.” The last Golden Hawk to score three touchdowns in a game was Bryon Hickey in the 2005 National Semi-Final where the Hawks defeated Acadia to advance to the Vanier Cup. Sophomore kicker Chris Mamo (London) put a 34-yard field goal through the pipes for the final three points of the match aer having an earlier aempt blocked. Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach Gary Jeffries had an opportunity later in the game to give some of his veterans a rest – for next Saturday’s homecoming game with Western - allowing some of the younger faces to see time on the field. “It’s always nice to get our younger kids in. Having lots of players on the field allows us to build experience and in the end the strength of our program.” The Golden Hawk offence need 402 yards compared to York’s 231. Quarterback Jamie Partington completed 14 of 32 for 188 yards, while later in the game freshman Vince Luciani relieved him completing 1 of 2 for four yards and three rushes for 23 yards in his first OUA appearance. game at the end of the first half aer suffering an undisclosed leg injury. This opened the door for red-shirted freshman Ian Noble to take his first snap in Purple and Gold. He looked nervous aer two incompletions, but came out in the second half and led the Hawks to victory.

WATERLOO – The defending Vanier Cup Champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-1) shut out the University of Western Mustangs (2-2) in the second half en route to a 34-18 victory over their bier rivals.

A Chris Mamo punt pinned the Mustangs deep in their own territory on the nine yard line. Quarterback Michael Faulds tried to force the ball over the middle, but was picked by freshman Jim Martyniuk. It was one of three interceptions for the young Golden Hawk seing a Laurier record for most in one game. It also put the Hawks in a great position to take the lead. The Hawk offense took no time, running 2 plays before an Andy Baechler 4-yard reverse gave the Hawks the lead for good.

The game started off with intensity as the Western Mustangs came out and danced on the Hawk during their introduction. Laurier followed the Mustangs out of the tunnel and a war of words ensued at mid-field. The first quarter turned out to be low scoring with one point awarded to Western on a missed field goal kick from 24-yards. A second field-goal aempt was blocked by a Laurier special teams unit.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Pyear called an excellent game, keeping the Mustang defense guessing. While the running back trio of Ryan Lynch, Brodie Legein and Peter Quinney combined for 180 yards on the ground, running the clock and controlling the ball in the second half.

In the second quarter some excellent field position allowed Western to jump out to a quick 15-0 lead on scores by Jesse Bellamy and D.J. Benne. With the Hawks on their heels, Coach Ron VanMoerkerkes’ defensive unit stepped up as Luke Pinder forced Quarterback Mike Faulds to fumble on his own 6-yard line. The ensuing play led to a 6-yard Dante Luciani touchdown.

The Golden Hawks sealed the deal aer a 17 play possession that started on their own 21-yard line and ended with a 4-yard Ryan Lynch touchdown.

The Golden Hawks success in the second quarter continued as the defense forced the Mustangs to go two-andout. Partington started out on his own 35-yard line, and threw a bomb down the sidelines to Andy Baechler for a 41-yard reception. Four plays later, Partington hooked up with Baechler again, this time, in the Mustang end zone. A late Western field goal would close out the scoring in the first half, and put the Mustangs up 18-16. Coach Jeffries must have pumped up the defense during halime aer Western quarterback Michael Faulds was 14 of 17 for 187 yards in the first half. In the second half they swarmed Faulds constantly – forcing one fumble and two interceptions. His counterpart, Jamie Partington was forced out of the

Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (41) had seven turnovers on-route to their fourth consecutive victory in the annual Bale of Waterloo. The Waterloo Warriors (2-3) took the lead away from the defending Vanier Cup Champions for less then three-minutes in the game as late in the third they moved the ball 27 yards aer one of Laurier’s fumbles. Laurier’s Will Northcote caught a touchdown pass two-minutes into the fourth to claim the lead back again in front of a crowd of 1,658. “I give a lot of credit to Waterloo,” said Head Coach Gary Jeffries. “We had a lot of turnovers and they were caused by a lot of strong effort from Waterloo.” Laurier has outscored their cross-town rivals 167 - 42 since their last loss in September of 2002. Waterloo’s Jon Morbey completed 14 of 35 despite a very cold and wet day and completed two touchdowns to Sean Cowie. Cowie, a second year receiver had his best performance of the season racking up 10 completions for 157 yards. Morbey was sacked three times in the contest, twice by Yannick Carter. Laurier’s Andy Baechler caught seven of Jamie Partington’s passes for 77 yards and one of the Golden Hawk three touchdowns. The final touchdown was a quarterback sneak by Partington – the first for him in his career as a Golden Hawk. The Golden Hawk quarterback was 14 for 24 for 219 yards and an interception on the aernoon. CIS tackle leader Jesse Alexander picked up another 6.5 tackles (3 solo) on the aernoon while Anthony Maggiacomo had seven tackles (5 solo). WATERLOO – Ryan Lynch of Waterloo, Ont. rushed for 196 yards and Laurier’s first three touchdowns as the number six nationally ranked Golden Hawks (6-1) defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (0-7) 687 in front of a crowd of 1,059.

The Hawks have outscored the Blues 466 – 51 over the last nine meetings and haven’t lost to Toronto since October 5th, 1996 (13-10).

Toronto had trouble moving the ball through Laurier’s stingy defense – only neing 178 yards over 12 first downs to Laurier’s 516 yards to 26 first downs. “We had an opportunity to see a lot of younger faces on the field today,” said head coach and manager of football operations Gary Jeffries. “They had a chance to show what they can do and how deep we are as a team.” Backup running back Brodie Legein (Hamilton, ON) carried the ball 11 times for 83 yards and two more of Laurier’s eight touchdowns. Jamie Partington (Stoney Creek) connected to seven other receivers on the day, totaling 23 completions on 38 passes for 353 yards.

Laurier finishes second in the OUA and receives a bye through the first round of the playoffs as a result of the tie-breaking procedures which place the team ahead of McMaster and Windsor, who also have 6-2 records.

“As disappointing as it is to lose, it was good for us to feel the loss and reflect on our mistakes today as we prepare for the playoffs,” said Baechler.

The Golden Hawks scored 22 points in the third quarter but the damage was already done as Lancer Glenn MacKay caught three touchdown passes on his four catches of the day – two of them in the first half of the game. OUA rushing leader Daryl Stephenson was held to 104 yards on the ground, but caught three balls for 57 yards and Windsor’s other touchdown of the game.

Hometown running back Ryan Lynch carried seven times for 30 yards before Brodie Legein of Hamilton replaced him due to injury and carried 12 times for another 51 yards. Yannick Carter (Pickering) led all defenders with eight tackles and both of the Hawks sacks in the contest.

The Hawks had all four of their turnovers in the fourth quarter – not allowing them to close the three point gap. 15 penalties for 140 yards added to the Hawks’ challenges throughout the game. “In spite of the penalties and physical and mental mistakes our kids fought back from 22-7 in the first,” said Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach Gary Jeffries. “We’ll now look forward to the bye week and resting up our guys as we await our opponent in the semi finals.” Third year running back and special teams’ player Steve Turner put the Hawks’ first points on the board on a 99yard kick-off return. The special-teams points were the first for the Hawks since Windsor traveled to Laurier in 2004 and Andy Baechler returned a punt 58 yards for a major. The running duo of Ryan Lynch and Brodie Legein continued to pound the ball against the ‘Stangs defense. The offensive line for the Hawks, consisting of Sco Evans, Tyler Felber, Andrew Dietrich, Wayne Brock, Kyle Sanderson and Kyle Weston simply wore out the Western defensive line, opening huge holes for the running game. Jamie Partington capped off a six play, 44 yard drive with a one yard plunge to give the Hawks a one point advantage at 13-12.

“Nail-biter sends Hawks to 4th Yates” “Laurier keeps Western out of end zone for 20-15 victory” by Mahew De Faria WATERLOO – Aer commiing seven turnovers the defending Vanier Cup Champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks pulled out a narrow 20-15 victory over the University of Western Ontario Mustangs. The win sends the number seven nationally-ranked Hawks to their fourth consecutive Yates Cup appearance, as they look to bring home the Ontario Championship for the third straight season. This season’s provincial title will take place in Oawa as the number three nationally-ranked Gee Gee’s host at Frank Clair Stadium.

However, it was a spectacular catch over the middle by Josh Bishop that sealed the victory for the Hawks and sent them to another Yates Cup. With just over four minutes le in the game the Hawks put together their longest drive of the game, going 48 yards on 11 plays. Bishop was able to hold onto the ball in the end zone aer geing crushed by a Western defensive back going the other way. He was a lile shaken up on the play, but proved to be the hero.

The game was riddled with turnovers and penalties. All totaled, both teams combined for 12 turnovers and 21 penalties. At one point during the second quarter, the teams exchanged possession five times, all on interceptions over a span of 11 minutes.

However, Western wasn’t going down without a fight. Quarterback Mark Howard hurried his team down the field and set up Shiavone’s final field goal, making the score 20-15. Then with just under two minutes le, Western mounted their final comeback aempt. Aer two quick first downs and pass interference penalty, the Mustangs found themselves deep in Golden Hawk territory on the 27 yard line. On second and 20, cornerback Taurean Allen made a crucial play, breaking up the potential first down and seing up third down for Western. Mark Howard was not able to find anyone open and tossed up an incompletion to give the Hawks a narrow victory.

“All said and done we had more points then they did and that’s what maers,” said Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach Gary Jeffries. “We’ll make the adjustments this week and be ready for Oawa next weekend.” Western kicker Derek Schiavone opened the scoring on a 31-yard field goal and accounted for all 15 of Mustang points on the day, aer going five for five on field goals. Both offenses stalled in the first half unable to establish anything on the ground.

The defense for the Golden Hawks deserves a lot of credit. They were solid all day and employed their usual bend, but don’t break approach. Linebacker Jesse Alexander was all over field totaling 13 tackles (8 solo). Fellow linebacker Anthony Maggiacomo was also a standout with 7 tackles (5 solo) and an interception.

Despite the lack of offense, the Hawks’ Dante Luciani was electric on special teams. A 21-yard punt return by Luciani gave the Hawk offense great field position on the Mustang 54-yard line. That was all that quarterback Jamie Partington needed as he made two big plays to his ‘backs – First he hit Ryan Lynch in the flats for 31-yards and then dumped the ball of to Brodie Legein who did the rest, find the end zone for a 7-3 Hawks lead. Another Schiavone field goal brought the Mustangs to within one going into half.

The Hawks now look to become the first football team in school history to win three straight Ontario Championships. While the team they will play, the Oawa Gee-Gee’s are looking to win their first Provincial title since 1997. The last time these two teams met was at Frank Clair Stadium, when the Hawk’s pulled away with a 21-14 win. The GeeGee’s have posted a 4-1 record this season.

The third quarter proved to be another defensive struggle as both teams took turns exchanging field position. Schiavone tacked on two more field goals, and the Hawks found themselves behind 12-7, heading into the final quarter of play.

be the winning score. Besides the Hawks obvious struggles on offense, the team was also losing the field position bale. Normally a Defensive Lineman, Aaron Aird was forced into punting duties. The former rugby player played exceptionally well considering the circumstances, averaging 31.6 yards per punt. Aird was filling in for an injured Chris Mamo, who was only on the field during extra points and field goals.

OTTAWA – The Oawa Gee-Gee’s, ended the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks chances of a repeat national championship with a 32-14 victory infront of 4,159 at Frank Clair Stadium. Aer eliminating Oawa two of the past three seasons from playoff contention, the GeeGee’s extracted their revenge and ended the Golden Hawks three year reign as OUA champs.

This were looking up for the Hawks aer a 98 yard pass from Jamie Partington to Dante Luciani second quarter that set up a Ryan Lynch one yard run, that gave the Hawks a 14-2 advantage. Aer that, it was all Gee-Gee’s, who went on to score 30 unanswered points, en route to their fourth Yates Cup Championship.

The score was no real indication of how close the game really was through the first three quarters, as Oawa tacked on 20 of their 30 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Up until then, the Golden Hawks had actually been leading 14-12 with the defense playing outstanding football against a strong Gee-Gee offense, led by First Team OUA All-Star Joshua Sacobie.

It was a sad day for the Golden Hawk graduating players as a few big names will be leaving the Laurier Football family: Jamie Partington Kyle Weston Will Northcote Jesse Alexander Gavin Cond Sco Evans Kyle Sanderson Dan McBride Brandon Keks Andy Baechler

However, the Golden Hawk offense just could not get going in the second half, going up against the top ranked defense in the country. They only mustered two first downs and 48 yards of total offense in the second half. This meant overtime for the Golden Hawk defense, who find themselves on the field more oen than not in the second half. Look no further than the number of tackles the Hawk defense accumulated. Linebacker Jesse Alexander finished with an astonishing 14.5 tackles. All in total, the team finished with 72 tackles for the game, thanks in most part to the time of possession in favour of the Gee-Gees, who held the ball for 65% of the game.

Despite the losses, Golden Hawk fans still have a lot to look forward to. There are two young quarterbacks in Ian Noble and Vince Luciani that are sure to step into the spotlight next season. They’ll be surrounded by returning Dante Luciani, Brodie Legein and Peter Quinney on offense. While, Jim Martyniuk, Jordan Van Horn, Luke Pinder, Anthony Maggiacomo and Dave Montoya will all be back to anchor the defense. The Hawks will be back next season and looking to return to their winning ways.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the football, the GeeGee offense found themselves on the field a whole lot. The first half saw Laurier control Second Team OUA All-Star running back Davie Mason. The Mitchell Bowl was first awarded in 2002, replacing the Atlantic Bowl, aer the CIS voted in 2001 to change the permanent site of the Atlantic Bowl in the interest of competitive fairness. During that year, the Mitchell Bowl played opposite to that of the Churchill Bowl. However, with the introduction of the Uteck Bowl in 2003, the Mitchell Bowl replaced and assumed the history of the Churchill Bowl.

WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities aer Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
