P e t e r B a x t e r , D i r e c t o r o f A t h l e t ics Over the past decade the student governments (WLUSU and GSA), the university and a number of community, alumni and corporate donors have contributed to building the best athletic and recreation facilities in Canada. The Fall 2007 season marks the completion of the redevelopment of University Stadium and the opening of our newly resurfaced playing field. In honour of Laurier legendary former directors and head football coaches David “Tuffy” Knight and Rich E. Newbrough, the new “KnightNewbrough Field” will be home field to our Golden Hawk football as well as our Lacrosse and Rugby teams. The University Stadium gymnasium floor has been resurfaced, multipurpose locker rooms and activity areas created and locker rooms for
Football and varsity teams have been rebuilt. All our ”Friends of the Family” have come together to make a difference to our varsity programs and our recreational users. On behalf of the Wilfrid Laurier Department of Athletics and Recreation I wish to thank you for your support of our stadium project. Enjoy what will be a promising season for the Golden Hawks Football team where head coach Gary Jeffries has his team poised to compete for the OUA Yates Cup Championship which celebrates its 100th year this November 10th, 2007. Sincerely,
Peter Baxter M.A. Director Athletics and Recreation

Manager of Football Operations & Head Coach
Gary Jeffries enters his 30th season as part of the Golden Hawk football coaching staff. It was not until 1970 that Gary would find his home at Wilfrid Laurier University. He played football for 2 years from 1970-1971 and was named an All-Star Defensive Half-Back and Rookie of the Year. After his career at Laurier he was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 1972 and in 1973 he signed with the Hamilton TigerCats but did not report. Gary also played four years in the Detroit Tiger organization prior to beginning his career at WLU. In 1973 he was hired at WLU as an assistant football coach and recreation director. From 1984-1988 Jeffries was also the women’s basketball coach at WLU. In 1989 he took a break from football and coached the men’s basketball team until 1996. In 1994 Rick Zmich convinced Jeffries to return to the game which he loves so much. Gary has coached 28 football seasons at WLU, with 17 as Defensive Coordinator. He was named the interim head coach midway through the ’02 season and was named the full time head coach in 2003. He has coached in 18 Yates Cups including
championship victories in the 1978, 1987, 2004 and 2005 seasons. Since taking over at the helm of the Hawks, the team has gone 37-6-1 including victories in two Yates Cups (2004, 2005), one Uteck Bowl (2005), and one Vanier Cup (2005). Coach Jeffries has coached over 700 games in total for WLU (both football and basketball), and his passion for WLU sport remains undying. Gary resides in Southampton in the offseason with his girlfriend Jill. He has four children, Jonathan, Jodie, Jaime, and Ryan, and five beautiful grandchildren.

Ryan Pyear enters his second season as the Golden Hawk Offensive Coordinator after five outsanding years as Laurier’s starting Quarterback. As a player Ryan enjoyed much success and he now hopes to continue that tradition in the role of Offensive Coordinator. Some of Ryan’s playing accolades include being named as the OUA Rookie of the Year in 2001 after taking every single snap as a freshman. In 2004 Ryan was named as a firstteam OUA all-star and second-team all-Canadian, and in 2005 he reached both first-team all-conference and firstteam all-Canadian status. That same year he was awarded Uteck Bowl and Vanier Cup MVP on the way to Wilfrid Laurier’s national supremacy on the gridiron. Other awards include backto-back President’s Awards as Wilfrid Laurier’s top male athlete in 2004 and 2005. Ryan graduated in June 2006, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology. He has two brothers, Kyle and Tobin, who also played five years in the OUA and CIS at McMaster and Waterloo respectively. His mother, Betty, and father Barry, currently live in Ryan’s home town of Belleville, Ontario. Barry Pyear is also a football coach at Laurier, coaching the running backs.
Ron Vanmoerkerke is in his ninth year coaching with the Golden Hawks. He returns again to the role of Defensive Coordinator, a position he has held since the 2003 season. Ron’s track record with Laurier is a long and storied one; he played in the late 80s and was on the 1987 Yates Cup championship team. In 1988, Ron received the WLU Alumni Association Academic and Athletic Achievement Award. In 1989, Ron was named an OUA first-team all-star linebacker and team MVP. At present, Ron is a teacher and the Department Head of Social Science at Eastwood Collegiate High School in Kitchener. Prior to becoming the Defensive Coordinator with the Hawks, Ron was the Head Coach at Eastwood and Galt Collegiate. Ron lives with his wife Karen and their three year old daughter Grace and nine-month old son Austin in West Montrose.
Rich Newbrough enters his 31st season with the Golden Hawks football coaching staff. Rich arrived at Wilfrid Laurier in 1968 as offensive coordinator. That very year the team went to the College Bowl (Vanier Cup). Along with coaching duties, Rich served as the Assistant Athletic Director and lectured within the Physical Education department. In 1984 Rich was named Director of Athletics and Head Football Coach. He held the position for 10 years before turning the head coaching duties over to Rick Zmich in 1994. During that span of his coaching career, the Hawks won two Yates Cup titles (1987, 1991) and Laurier’s first National Championship in 1991. Rich retired from fulltime duties in 1997 but has maintained close contact with the program. Throughout his coaching career Rich has received several awards. He was named OUAA coach of the year in 1985 and CIAU Coach of the Year in 1991. Rich served as President of the OUAA, and was a member of the Board of Directors in the CIAU. Upon his retirement, the OUAA honored Rich with the ‘J.P. Loosemore Award’. Rich coached with Gary Jeffries back in 1970 who served as his assistant for over five years. Rich is honored to be part of the Golden Hawk Football staff yet again. Rich currently lives with his wife Pat of 48 years. They have raised two sons and have eight grandchildren ranging in age from 9-20. Rich and his wife have lived in Kitchener for nearly 40 years.

2 0 0 7 O U A O P P ONENT S September 3 - McMaster at Laurier, 2:00pm Head Coach: Stefan Ptaszek 2006 Record: 6-2 (4th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs McMaster: 38-12-1 Current Streak: Laurier 4 wins Outlook for 2007: The McMaster defense will have the return of lineman Chris Van Zeyl and Eugene Boakye. With Simon Binder and starter Jason Arakgi also returning at linebacker the defensive front looks solid. The defense will need to prove itself in the defensive secondary where senior Frank Longo is the only returning starter. On offense, starting QB Adam Archibald could be back pending his recovery. The fifth year senior battled injuries much of the 2006 season forcing rookie QB Ryan Fantham into action. McMaster could receive a boost if CIS All-Canadian Kyle Koch is not activated off a CFL practice roster and is able to return for the season. Another position that has seen the Marauders continue to produce all-stars is at running back as Sadeghian led McMaster in rushing last season with 886 yds on 147 carries. McMaster might see contributions from both the full back and running back spots from Rob Mitchell and Ugonna Ihekwoaba as well as younger players who prove themselves during training camp. The receiving corps will continue to be led by Jordan Charter who had a break out season in 2006 catching 20 balls for 447 yards with 4 touchdowns. September 8 - Windsor at Laurier, 6:30pm Head Coach: Mike Morencie 2006 Record: 6-2 (3rd in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Windsor: 31-11-2 Current Streak: Windsor 1 win Outlook for 2007: Coming off a very solid season in 2006 (6-2 and a berth in the OUA Quarter Finals), the 2007 Lancer Football team is knocking on the door of the elite teams in the OUA. Coach Mike Morencie’s squad returns 14 starters from 2006, including Hec Crighton winner Daryl Stephenson. Stephenson is the two-time CIS rushing leader and is on pace to shatter the CIS all-time rushing record this season. Returning alongside Stephenson are veteran QB Dan Lumley, CIS All-Canadian WR Glenn MacKay, and OL Matt Morencie. These standouts are as good at their position as anyone in the country and will be a challenge for any opponent’s defense around the league. On the Lancer defense, the key will be how well their younger players are able to step in and fill the void left by graduated seniors Alan Weekes, Billy Moysiuk and Sasha Glavic. September 14 - Laurier at Toronto, 7:00pm Head Coach: Steve Howlett 2006 Record: 0-8 (10th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Toronto: 26-11 Current Streak: Laurier 9 wins Outlook for 2007: The University of Toronto Varsity Blues will be looking for their first win in a long time as they start the 2007 campaign on Labour Day against the Waterloo Warriors. The blue and white have gone 6 years or 41 games without picking up a win. The last victory was at the former Varsity Stadium and the team looks to be breaking the goose egg with a win at the brand new 5,000 seat Varsity Stadium which just opened. Last year’s defense gave up the most offense in the province - 418 points in only 8 games of play. The team just had their largest training camp, with over 95 players in attendance to earn a spot on the roster. Quarterback David Hamilton looks like he will have the starting job but will be challenged by York transfer George Gretes and rookie Andrew Gillis. The team’s number one rookie is Adam Fehler from Toronto who will help the offense as a body on the line. Key players back for the team include Mike Goncalves, a defensive end who was drafter by the Tiger Cats and Mark Stinson, a slotback who was the team’s most valuable player last season. September 22 - Waterloo at Laurier (Homecoming), 1:00pm Head Coach: Dennis McPhee 2006 Record: 3-5 (7th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Waterloo: 34-14-1 Current Streak: Laurier 4 wins Outlook for 2007: The Warriors look to make noise in the OUA football division this season under new head coach Dennis McPhee. Offensive co-ordinator and former CFL head coach, Joe Paopao will assist McPhee in the pursuit of guiding the Warriors to their first playoff berth in 4 years. The Warriors will be relying heavily on McPhee and Paopao to create team cohesiveness. Second year QB Evan Martin will use the valuable experience he gained last season to lead the Warriors. Wide Receiver, Sean Cowie entering his third year will look to lead the Warriors in receptions with 45 catches for 661 yards. Defensive lineman, Darren Kisinger returns for his final year of eligibility after earning a spot on the 2006 first team all stars. Kisinger will be relied upon heavily to provide the necessary leadership on and off the field for the young Warrior squad.
16
September 29 - Laurier at Queen’s, 1:25pm Head Coach: Pat Sheahan 2006 Record: 4-4 (6th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Queen’s: 4-4 Current Streak: Laurier 3 wins, did not compete last season Outlook for 2007: Queen’s sees an offence that returns local receiver Rob Bagg for his final season. QB Danny Brannagan will be looking to continue to improve after finishing third in the OUA in passing. In the backfield, Mike Giffin will play at running back who had career highs last season in carries and receptions. The offensive line will see seven players return and anchoring the line will be Sean O’Donnell and Cody Kennedy, and returning is Vince De Civita. Defensive coordinator Pat Tracey will have to deal with key losses at linebacker but leading the way will be Jimmy Allin and Matt Vickers. The linebacking core will have some experience in DJ Mulholland who was among the team leaders in solo tackles with 18. Tim Poffley started the last seven games of the season in 2006 at middle linebacker. The defensive line will be keyed by third year tackle Dee Sterling. Osie Ukwuoma and Pat Corbin return to make the defensive line one of the most veteran laden units in the league. Kicking duties will fall to Dan Village. Kevin Magee will be the long snapper for the Gaels along with seeing some duty on the defensive line. Rob Bagg will return kicks after a 2006 season that saw him take back 58 punts for 412 yards. October 6 - Laurier at Guelph, 1:00pm Head Coach: Kyle Walters 2006 Record: 2-5 (8th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Guelph: 34-12 Current Streak: Laurier 4 wins Outlook for 2007: The Gryphons will be relying on a young group of players to emerge as the team has undergone a transition over the past two seasons. Offensively, receivers Lorne Foster and Adam Slomer will be the only fifth year players. On the other side of the ball, defensive player of the year Chris Decker and Chris Hladich will be the fifth-year players providing leadership. The Gryphon offence will be counting on third year QB Justin Dunk. The emergence of RB Nick Fitzgibbon will take some of the pressure off of the passing game as the Gryphon offence will look to control the clock and limit the number of turnovers in 2007. The biggest area of improvement for the 2007 season will be on the offensive line. On the defensive side, a major overhaul to the secondary was the main challenge for the off season. The defense will need to dramatically improve the number of big plays given up from last season. Last season saw the emergence of rookie kicker Rob Maver. Rob was an OUA all-star punter in his first year and will be looking to add all star place kicker to his resume. October 13 - Ottawa at Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Denis Piché 2006 Record: 7-1 (1st in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Ottawa: 9-9-1 Current Streak: Ottawa 2 wins Outlook for 2007: Josh Sacobie will be back for his fourth year at the helm of the Gee-Gees offence in 2007. Last season, Sacobie became just the second Gee-Gee in team history to pass for 5000 career yards, throwing for 1860 yards in seven games. The receiving unit remains very much in tack from last season. David Crane returns for his fourth season after leading Ottawa in receiving yards in 2006 with a career high 32 catches for 596 yards. In offense, rookie Davie Mason averaged 93.3 yards rushing per game in his first season with the GeeGees while tailback Mike Donnelly emerged in the second half of the season as another threat in the backfield. He was the leading rusher in the 2006 Yates Cup championship running for 94-yards on 9 carries. Linebacker Joe Barnes is back to anchor the linebacking corps for the fourth season. Last year, Joe recorded 46 tackles in the regular season including a career high three sacks. Dan Kennedy and Mike Cornell are also expected to return to the Gee-Gees at the defensive end and linebacking positions. October 20 - Laurier at York, 1:00pm Head Coach: Andrew McEvoy 2006 Record: 1-6 (9th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs York: 30-5 Current Streak: Laurier 4 wins Outlook for 2007: QB returnees Bart Zemanek and Mike Crabtree are expected to battle up to six other players, including Concordia transfer Michael Hyatt. Eight players also figure to be in the running for the starting running back role. The offensive strength likely will be the receiving corps. An outstanding rookie class enters the sophomore campaign looking to build off a strong 2006. Kevin Walsh, a first-team OUA all-star at kick returner and a second-teamer at receiver, leads that group. Up front, the offensive line is anchored by Dave Gauer. Janson Kenny and Boris Radulovic return to lead the defensive line, while Thomas and Chris Russell are two key linebackers. Robin Legault and Jerome Walker were solid in the secondary last season and are expected to be forces this year. Two additions at linebacker are Aaron Adusei and Marc Faria. Other first-year players to watch include defensive back Cleon Holmes, offensive lineman Brian Buckingham and defensive lineman Corey Pratt.
