MAX B LO U W , P RE S I D ENT My term of office as President began in September 2007 but for a month before that I was living adjacent to the stadium at Lucinda House while waiting to take possession of my own home. That month was a revelation. First, the stadium was being refurbished with construction starting early in the morning and continuing late into the evening. Second, the artificial turf was being installed. I had not realized that the material for the turf was recycled automobile tires, but the smell of all that rubber in the hot sun left no doubt. It was a fascinating pleasure to watch, day by day, as the field was completed. As the season progressed and as I became more familiar with the university and its incredible spirit I also came to appreciate the special place that athletics holds in the hearts of students, players, staff, faculty, alumni and the community.

Homecoming weekend brought home to me forcefully the distinctiveness of the Laurier experience. I met people who had travelled from Western Canada, the southern States, and from Europe to be at Homecoming. Our alumni and other supporters continue to be most generous. Their contributions enable a strong and dynamic athletic experience for our talented and committed players. A special thanks to both our donors and our players for creating such wonderful experiences for the members of the university and wider community. As Laurier continues the visioning process, I would like to keep hearing from alumni who have been a part of Athletics. Your insight into the university and its community is a valuable resource. I am looking forward to the 2008 season and seeing many of you at the games and the events surrounding

the games. And I am expecting a great season. GO HAWKS!

Max Blouw President & Vice-Chancellor Wilfrid Laurier University

Peter Baxter, DirectoR The Golden Hawk Athletics and Recreation stands out as one of the premier programs in Canada. Last season, Laurier interuniversity teams earned four OUA championship banners and two national CIS titles. Our curling teams, through winning their CIS championships, will represent Canada at the 2009 World Universiade to be held in Harbin, China February 18-28. By the conclusion of the 2007-08 season, our teams had earned 50 OUA championships and 10 national championships. Ten of these provincial and 2 of the national titles belong to the Golden Hawk football team, and are evidence of the strong contributions made by football to our athletic program. This record of achievement has been a result of the collective efforts behind our vision of “Invest in people, improve the product, and win! We have gathered, over the years, the best 2

in coaching and leadership, and athletes with a superior determination to excel. Support off the field is also strong: our event staff and sport information staff are recognized nationally for their professionalism. Our medical and athletic therapy team give the best of care to our athletes and our student body and alumni have helped us attain the best in facilities and enhanced program resources to achieve excellence. The future bodes well for the program. This year our Athletic Financial Award program will be in year two and throughout the 2008-09 academic year, over $280,000 will be given to academically qualified, athletically gifted student-athletes. This support will allow Golden Hawks in all sports to continue to improve their skills, and pursue high achievements. Our men’s football team remains one of the staples of our athletic program, and we look forward to

another season of excellence from the men in purple and gold.

After allowing a mere 17.8 points per game in 2006, the Hawks improved on defence by allowing only 15.5 points per game last season. In total, the defence combined for 18 sacks, 13 interceptions, seven forced fumbles and three touchdowns. The loss of linebacker Maggiacomo and defensive backs Jahmeeks Beckford and Brent Hickey will be early challenges the defence will have to overcome if they wish to remain among one of the elite defences in the OUA.

SPECIAL TEAMS Despite the loss of the team’s veteran punt and kick off returner, Steve Turner, the Golden Hawks special teams look to have a strong 2008 season. The Golden Hawk kicking game will once again be lead by fourth year player Chris Mamo, while returning duties will be determined throughout camp. Also, the Golden Hawks’ strong recruiting class will undoubtedly play a role on the special teams this year.

Defensive Line This season, the defensive line is one of the deepest positions for the Golden Hawks. Aside from the loss of Joe Labenski and Andrew Flatt, the majority of last years’ line remains intact. Defensive end Kyle Ardill leads the way for the defensive line, having recently participated in the CIS East-West bowl. Chima Ihekwoaba also returns at the other defensive end position and will look to improve on his sophomore performance. Other key defensive returners will be Stephen Cormack, Alex Ellis, Jeremy Chemij, Paul Hancock, Spencer Troop, and George Kortesiotis. Look for end Chad McGraw and 6’5, 365-pound Vince Holland to challenge for dress spots on the defensive front.

Kicking Game Returning for his fourth season with the Golden Hawks is kicker Chris Mamo. Last season Mamo hit 15 of 22 field goal attempts, while also ranking third in the OUA with his kickoff average. He also led all Golden Hawks last season with 78 points scored. The seasoned kicker sits sixth in Golden Hawk history in field goals made and will be relied upon to provide a consistent and effective kicking game.

Return Game Last years’ leading punt and kickoff returners, Steve Turner and Dante Luciani are gone, leaving two large holes to fill in the Golden Hawk return game. Look for several speedsters and rookies to be given a shot at claiming the returning Linebackers duties. One name to look out for is rookie wide receiver The Golden Hawk linebacker core will see the return of sev- Shamawd Chambers. Chambers arrives with a blistering 4.4 eral veteran players. Manager of Football Operations & Head Coach

Gary Jeffries enters his 31st season as part of the Golden Hawk football coaching staff. It was not until 1970 that Gary would find his home at Wilfrid Laurier University. He played football for two years from 1970-1971 and was named an All-Star Defensive Half-Back and Rookie of the Year. After his career at Laurier he was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 1972 and in 1973 he signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats but did not report. Gary also played four years in the Detroit Tiger organization prior to beginning his career at WLU. In 1973 he was hired at WLU as an assistant football coach and recreation director. From 1984-1988 Jeffries was also the women’s basketball coach at WLU. In 1989 he took a break from football and coached the men’s basketball team until 1996. In 1994 Rick Zmich convinced Jeffries to return to the game which he loves so much. Gary has coached 28 football seasons at WLU, with 17 as Defensive Coordinator. He was named the interim head coach midway through the ’02 season and was named the full-time

head coach in 2003. He has coached in 18 Yates Cups including championship victories in the 1978, 1987, 2004 and 2005 seasons. Since taking over at the helm of the Hawks, the team has gone 44-8-1 including victories in two Yates Cups (2004, 2005), one Uteck Bowl (2005), and one Vanier Cup (2005). Coach Jeffries has coached over 700 games in total for WLU (both football and basketball), and his passion for WLU sport remains undying. Gary resides in Southampton in the off-season with his girlfriend Jill. He has four children, Jonathan, Jodie, Jaime, and Ryan, and five beautiful grandchildren.

Special Teams CoordinatoR

Ryan Pyear enters his third season as the Golden Hawk Offensive Coordinator after five outsanding years as Laurier’s starting Quarterback. As a player Ryan enjoyed much success and he now hopes to continue that tradition in the role of Offensive Coordinator. Some of Ryan’s playing accolades include being named as the OUA Rookie of the Year in 2001 after taking every single snap as a freshman. In 2004 Ryan was named as a firstteam OUA all-star and second-team all-Canadian, and in 2005 he reached both first-team all-conference and firstteam all-Canadian status. That same year he was awarded Uteck Bowl and Vanier Cup MVP on the way to Wilfrid Laurier’s national supremacy on the gridiron. Other awards include backto-back President’s Awards as Wilfrid Laurier’s top male athlete in 2004 and 2005. Ryan graduated in June 2006, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology. He has two brothers, Kyle and Tobin, who also played five years in the OUA and CIS at McMaster and Waterloo respectively. His mother, Betty, and father Barry, currently live in Ryan’s home town of Belleville, Ontario. Barry Pyear is also a football coach at Laurier, coaching the running backs.

Ron Vanmoerkerke is in his tenth year coaching with the Golden Hawks. He returns again to the role of Defensive Coordinator, a position he has held since the 2003 season. Ron’s track record with Laurier is a long and storied one; he played in the late 80s and was on the 1987 Yates Cup championship team. In 1988, Ron received the WLU Alumni Association Academic and Athletic Achievement Award. In 1989, Ron was named an OUA first-team all-star linebacker and team MVP. At present, Ron is a teacher and the Department Head of Social Science at Eastwood Collegiate High School in Kitchener. Prior to becoming the Defensive Coordinator with the Hawks, Ron was the Head Coach at Eastwood and Galt Collegiate. Ron lives with his wife Karen and their daughter Grace and son Austin in West Montrose.

Alexander began his coaching career in the city leagues at age fifteen and won an OVFL Jr. Championship with the Twin City Predators in 2001, where he was the Defensive Co-ordinator. He played for the Golden Hawks from 1999 to 2003, and in this time was an All-Star Defensive Lineman and Russ Jackson Award winner. After graduating, Alexander accepted a position as a graduate assistant coach at Mississippi College in Jackson, MS where he was the Offensive Line and Tight Ends Coach. During this time, he attended Mississippi College where he obtained his Masters in Business Education. Upon completion, he entered the U.S. high school football scene as the Linebackers Coach and Special Teams Co-ordinator for Mary G. Montgomery High School, a 6A program in Mobile, Alabama. Coach Alexander returned to Canada and WLU in 2007, joining the Laurier coaching staff as the Offensive Line Coach. The 2008 season will be his 13th season walking the sidelines and he will take on the additional responsibility of Special Teams Co-ordinator for the Hawks. Under Alexander’s tutelage, the Hawks offense was first in the OUA in rushing as well as sacks, and he also coached the country’s best offensive lineman, Scott Evans. Coach Alexander is happily married to the love of his life, Monica, who is also a WLU Alum. They have a wonderful son, Noah, who will celebrate his first birthday on September 12, 2008.

2 0 0 8 O U A O P P ONENT S September 1 - Guelph at Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Kyle Walters 2007 Record: 4-4 (5th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Guelph: 35-13 Current Streak: Guelph 1 win Outlook for 2008: The Guelph Gryphons are coming off of one of their most successful seasons in recent history. Guelph finished the 2007 regular season with a record of 4-4, earning them the #5 seed in the OUA playoffs. Their record, however, does not represent how well the team played throughout the season, as they remained competitive in every game. They hit their stride coming into the playoffs, and defeated McMaster in the quarter-final by a score of 25-21, earning a rematch against the #2 ranked Wilfrid Laurier in the semifinals. The team went on to pull off the major upset, defeating the Golden Hawks 38-31 before losing to Western in the Yates Cup. The Gryphons were consistently a threat against the Golden Hawks last year, keeping their first game extremely close. The 2008 Gryphons return their offensive leaders quarterback Justin Dunk and running back Nick Fitzgibbon. The two helped the Gryphons rank second in the OUA in rushing. As well, the young team produced seven OUA all-stars and will be a threat to any team they face this upcoming season. September 6 - Western at Laurier, 7:00pm Head Coach: Greg Marshall 2007 Record: 4-4 (6th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Western: 21-35-1 Current Streak: Laurier 5 wins, did not compete last season Outlook for 2008: Despite starting the 2007 season with zero wins and four losses, the Western Mustangs stormed back during the second half of the season to win their last four games, earning them a birth into the playoffs as the last seeded team. They would go on to defeat Queen’s (#3), Ottawa (#1), and then Guelph (#5) to cap off their comeback season and be crowned the Yates Cup Champions. Western would then fall to the eventual Vanier Cup champions, the Manitoba Bisons. The Mustangs produced six OUA all-stars during the season, as well as having the CIS’ top-ranked passing attack, averaging 313 passing yards per game. Heading into the 2008 season, the Mustangs will be without one of their key veteran running backs Randy McAuley, leaving an open competition for running back this upcoming season. Look for the defending Yates Cup champions to show more consistency this season as they fight to stay atop the OUA. September 13 - Laurier at Queen’s, 1:00pm Head Coach: Pat Sheahan 2007 Record: 6-2 (3rd in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Queen’s: 5-4 Current Streak: Laurier 3 wins Outlook for 2008: In 2007, the consistent Queen’s Golden Gaels enjoyed another successful season that saw the team post a record of 6-2 in the regular season. In the regular season matchup against the Golden Hawks, Queen’s fell by a score of 23-4. As the third seed in the playoffs, the Golden Gaels advanced to the OUA quarter-finals where they fell to the eventual Yates Cup champions the Western Mustangs. They had one of the top three offences and defences in the OUA this past season, ranking fourth in the OUA in total offence, as well as third in the OUA in rushing yards. The offensive leaders for the team include the OUA leading rusher Mike Giffin (1157 yards), as well as third-year Quarterback Dan Brannagan who ranked third in the OUA in total passing yards (2123 yards). The Queen’s defense kept the team competitive in every game, as the defense ranked second in the OUA in yards allowed per game. The success of the team helped produce 11 OUA all-stars for Queen’s. This upcoming year, the Golden Gaels will welcome back Quarterback Dan Brannagan and defending OUA rushing champion Mike Giffin to the fold. The running back was selected 17th overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in this year’s CFL Canadian Draft, and will refine his skills at the varsity level before turning pro. September 20 - Windsor at Laurier (Homecoming), 1:00pm Head Coach: Mike Morencie 2007 Record: 2-6 (8th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Waterloo: 32-11-2 Current Streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2008: The Windsor Lancers had a down year in 2007 after having a 6-2 record the previous year, finishing with a record of 2-6 and failing to qualify for the OUA playoffs. Their two wins of the season were against Toronto and York, who combined for one win this past year. Despite a tough go, the team had two OUA all-stars, and ranked fourth in the OUA in rushing yards per game. The offence was lead by fourth-year running back and 2006 Hec Crighton Award (CIS player of the year) winner Darryl Stephenson, who was limited to just six games last season. The Lancers will welcome Darryl back this upcoming year, giving this Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ draft pick one more opportunity to become just the second OUA student-athlete to win the Hec Crighton Award in two years. Stephenson now sets his sights on the all-time CIS rushing record, and he’s 336 yards from breaking it. Joining Stephenson will be a young and talented defensive unit that has one year of experience under their belts following last season. With 18 starters returning to the Lancers in 2008, as well as a talented recruiting class, Windsor will look to improve on their 2007 record and return to the OUA playoffs.

September 27 – Laurier at Waterloo, 1:00pm Head Coach: Dennis McPhee 2007 Record: 3-5 (7th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Waterloo: 35-14-1 Current Streak: Laurier 5 wins Outlook for 2008: The Warriors look to make noise in the OUA football division this season under second-year head coach Dennis McPhee. In 2007, the Waterloo Warriors finished with a record of 3-5, including a loss against the Golden Hawks during last year’s homecoming matchup. Despite not qualifying for the playoffs, the Warriors saw two OUA all-stars last season, including receiver Sean Cowie who ranked fifth in the OUA in receiving yards. Cowie, as well as fellow receiver Joshua Svec, participated in the recent CIS East West Bowl last May and will lead the charge with third-year quarterback Evan Martin for the Warriors’ offence. The offence last season ranked third last in the OUA and will look to build on a year of experience in their new offensive system this upcoming season. The young defence will have very big holes to fill, following the graduation of Stephen Campbell and two fifth-year defensive ends, and the team will look to young and emerging talent to step into the roles. The 2008 season looks promising for the Warriors, as they open their brand new stadium and have many promising athletes looking to carry the team into their first playoff birth in years. October 4 - Laurier at Ottawa, 12:30pm Head Coach: Denis Piché 2007 Record: 8-0 (1st in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Ottawa: 9-10-1 Current Streak: Ottawa 3 wins Outlook for 2008: The Ottawa Gee-Gees had a very successful 2007 season, led by the defending OUA Most Valuable Player Josh Sacobie (Fredericton, NB). They posted an undefeated regular season record, including a 27-15 win over the Golden Hawks towards the end of the season. Entering the OUA playoffs as the first seed, they earned a bye into the semifinal where they faced off against the sixth-ranked Western Mustangs. They would end up losing against the Mustangs in a stunning upset, ending any thoughts of a national championship. Their regular season accomplishments were great as they had 10 OUA all-stars, the majority of which were first-team nominations, and they also had the second best offence in the country. The offence relied on the arm of Sacobie, who helped lead Ottawa to the third best passing attack in the CIS. He is within 2,261 yards and 25 passing touchdowns away from breaking the CIS record for all-time passing yards and career touchdown passes. With many of Ottawa’s veterans in their final year of eligibility, look for them to make one final push towards another Yates Cup championship. October 11 – McMaster at Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Stefan Ptaszek 2007 Record: 5-3 (4th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs McMaster: 39-12-1 Current Streak: Laurier 4 wins Outlook for 2008: The McMaster Marauders will look to improve on their 2007 year as they open their brand-new 6000 seat Ronald V. Joyce Stadium in 2008. The Marauders enjoyed a successful season in the OUA in 2007, posting a 5-3 regular season record, including an opening game loss to the Golden Hawks (36-26). Their season was highlighted by a victory over the eventual Yates Cup champions, the Western Mustangs. They secured the fourth seed in the playoffs, but fell in the quarter-final to the Yates Cup finalists, the Guelph Gryphons. Following the season, three Marauders were selected to the OUA all-star team. The end of the football season also marked the end of fifth-year quarterback Adam Archibald’s career with the Marauders. McMaster appears to be a young team in transition and will aim to build on their successful 2007 season. Leading the way for the Marauders will be sophomore linebacker Ryan Chmielewski, who had 35 solo tackles during his rookie season to place third among all-time Marauders. He led McMaster with 50 solo tackles and 10 assisted, as well as three sacks in eight games played. October 18- Laurier at York, 1:00pm Head Coach: Mike McLean 2007 Record: 1-7 (9th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs York: 31-5 Current Streak: Laurier 5 wins Outlook for 2008: In preparation for their upcoming 2008 season, the York Lions hope to put the past two years behind them as they aim for stronger results. This past season the Lions finished the regular season with a 1-7 record, ranking only in front of the winless Toronto Varsity Blues. The Lions also had close losses against Waterloo (18-15) and the eventual Yates Cup champions the Western Mustangs (11-9). Their loss to the Golden Hawks in the final game ended a rough 2007 year for the Lions. York still managed to have two players named to the OUA all-star team, including current third-year receiver Steven Hughes, who will continue to remain an offensive threat for the Lions. In 2008, the York Lions will turn to new head coach Mike McLean to help turn around a 1-7 record. McLead led the Edmonton Huskies (CJFL) to two national junior titles, and most recently served as the defensive coordinator with the Uteck Bowl champions, the Saint Mary’s Huskies. With a new head coach and the majority of last year’s young roster returning, the 2008 York Lions will try to become contenders in the OUA playoff race.

Rohan Thompson Enters Hall of Fame

Five athletes, a builder and two teams will be inducted into the Athletics and Recreation Hall of Fame on Friday, September 19th as part of the festivities of Homecoming Weekend 2008. This year’s inductees include former varsity athletes Niki Budalic (soccer), Jacqueline Grahek (hockey), Tara Ross (cross-country & swimming), Jim Zwolak (golf), builder Randy McGlynn, the 1987 men’s and 1993 women’s soccer teams, and Golden Hawk football player Rohan Thompson. A graduate of 2003, Thompson was a key member of the football team from 1999 to 2003. He quickly established himself by dressing as a rookie linebacker on the Golden Hawks defense and starting five games in his first season. A leader both on and off the field, Thompson had a career best 46.5 tackles in his final season with the purple and gold to give him

a career total of 165.5 total tackles. Despite suffering two season-ending injuries, Rohan was named an OUA first team all-star in 2000 and 2002, as well as the team’s most valuable player in his final year, 2002. “These individuals achieved excellence, whether it was through academics, athletics, or by contributing to others,” said Peter Baxter, Wilfrid Laurier’s Director of Athletics and Recreation. “As inductees to the Hall of Fame, they are now part of an elite group known as Golden Hawk history makers.” Hosting the Hall of Fame ceremony at the Senate and Board Chamber on the campus of Wilfrid Laurier will be CTV S o u t h we s t ern Ontario sports anchor Randy Steinman.
