2008 Season in Review Laurier's women's soccer team entered the season with a bronze medal from last year's OUA finals, and knew that with exactly the same squad, they could push for a different colour this year. The start was exactly what they were looking for, a 1-0 win over Waterloo, thanks to a Heather Malizia finish, and 2-1 win over Guelph had the ladies right on track. Captain Sara Hopper and Ali Mckee netted the goals for Laurier in the win over Guelph. The team that didn't graduate a single player from the year previous had no problems regaining their chemistry. But following a 2-2 tie with the Brock Badgers, a game in which a goal by Sara Hopper in the dying seconds salvaged a result, the lady Hawks then found themselves in a scoring rut, with just two goals over their next five games the situation seemed dire. But with a stingy defense, they managed two wins and three draws for nine points. A 0-0 draw with McMaster was followed by a 1-0 victory over Waterloo. The following week the trend continued, a 0-0 draw with York showed the ladies could compete with the best of the best. A 1-0 victory against the Western Mustangs and a disappointing 0-0 draw with the Windsor Lancers ended their drought. Sarah Houghton scored the goal for Laurier against Waterloo, and Jennifer Fewster-Yen netted the only marker against Western. Another solid weekend saw the women pick up a 2-1 win over Brock, and another 0-0 draw with the undefeated McMaster marauders. Becca Isaacs opened the scoring against Brock, and Ali McKee put the game out of reach. However, they would hit a brick wall with a 3-0 crushing by the Lions of York. The defeat was the first of the season for Laurier. The resilient squad bounced back with a 4-0 pasting of Guelph. Heather Malizia scored two of the goals, with Monique Da Silva and Nicole Currie getting the other scores. That was followed up with a 2-1 victory over Windsor where Heather Malizia notched both tallies, and a 4-0 trouncing of the Mustangs. Malizia, McKee, Alyssa Coppolino, and Paige Heathcote finished off the offensive blitz. Failing to secure a first-round bye the ladies hosted the Waterloo Warriors for the right to travel to McMaster in the quarter-final. Like the weeks previous their scoring touch remained, putting up three goals to Waterloo's one the ladies booked their tickets to Hamilton. Jennifer Fewster-Yen netted two of the three goals for Laurier, including the game-winner, a header off a cross. Ali McKee got Laurier's other marker in the contest. The Marauders were the only undefeated team in the OUA, and the purple and gold made sure their first of the season hurt. Jumping out early Laurier had far too much fight even for the Marauders and came out ontop of the fight with a 3-1 victory. Ali McKee netted two of the goals and Monique Da Silva got the other tally. Scoring 16 goals over their last five games should stand as testament to the potential of this young squad. The squad was honoured with a total of four all-star selections. Tania Pedron and Heather Malizia were named to the first-team with Liora Berger and Sara Hopper being credited with second-team selections.

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities after Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
