MAX B LO U W , P RE S I D ENT Wilfrid Laurier University has many strong programs and traditions, but few have the wide-ranging impact of Golden Hawk football. We certainly have a tradition of success on the field — 10 provincial championships and two national titles. But it’s equally true that Golden Hawk football plays a significant role in the broader Laurier community. As I look forward to my third season as a Golden Hawk fan, I continue to be impressed by the special place that football holds in the hearts of our students, alumni, staff and faculty. Golden Hawk football is clearly a communal passion that binds past and present. This is important for an institution such as Laurier, which prides itself not only on academic excellence but also on its distinct sense of community. There are many factors that contribute
to Laurier’s winning formula, but it’s clear that Golden Hawk football provides a rallying point for students, alumni, staff and faculty to celebrate their shared experience. Our alumni and other supporters continue to be most generous, and for that you have my sincere thanks. Your contributions enable us to provide an exceptional experience for our studentathletes, an experience that is shared across the whole Laurier community. The 2009 season promises to be as exciting as ever. Once again we have a talented group of veterans and a strong crop of new players. Peter Baxter, DirectoR The Golden Hawk Athletic and Recreation program continues to impress as just last year we saw several top performances by athletes including 48 OUA all-Stars and CIS all-Canadians, as well as teams capturing championships including four provincial banners and one national title last year. Despite the challenges of the economic times, Wilfrid Laurier still continues to invest in maintaining a strong athletic program. We will continue to look to new initiatives to help keep our programs as strong as they presently are. Affordable, Fun, Family Entertainment is what Golden Hawk Football offers. This year we have themed days at home games: September 19th Battle of Waterloo honouring staff & faculty at Laurier. October 3rd vs. Ottawa Gee Gees marks our annual Homecoming event. October 10th highlights ‘Our Future Stars’ showcasing amateur & high school football in Waterloo Region and October 24th celebrates the 2
contributions of police, fire fighters, emergency service workers as well as armed forces personnel with the theme of ‘Those Heroes that Serve’. This year a new revitalized alumni and friends booster club, ‘The Laurier Football Club’ raised the bar for fan pregame activities. Starting at 11:00 a.m. ‘Hawk Town’, located in the backyard of 79 Seagram drive, otherwise known as the Football house, will be the Hawk gathering place for friends and alumni to have a BBQ lunch, drinks, entertainment and great conversation. RELOADING IN 2009 The 2009 edition of the Golden Hawks will be more experienced than the one that finished the season last year at TD Waterhouse Stadium against the Western Mustangs. In 2008, the Golden Hawks started the season 1-2 with a one point victory over the Guelph Gryphons and losses to Western and Queen’s. After Laurier’s first backto-back losses since 2002, the team reeled off five straight wins to finish third in the OUA and earn a quarter-final appearance. The team hosted the McMaster Maurauders and shutout the visitors 29-0 to advance. In the provincial semifinal the purple and gold fell short with a 25 point come-back bid in the second half to lose 36-28 to the Mustangs. This marked the second time in as many years in which the Hawks season ended in the OUA semifinal. Despite the early playoff exit, Laurier earned seven provincial all-stars including first-year standouts Shamawd Chambers and Courtney Stephen. The team also dressed 11 first-year players and had five of them starting by the end of the season.
Quarterbacks Third year quarterback Luke Thompson will take over the reins of the Laurier offence after earning the starting job last season. The communications major earned the team’s MVP award last year after throwing for 1,686 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also showed how mobile he can be by ending the season second in rushing with 364 yards. Thompson will be backed up by second year Evan Pawliuk, who has a strong arm and speed.
Running Backs In the backfield this year look for running back Mike Montoya to carry the mail for the Golden Hawks. The fourth year economics major has put in a lot of off-season work and intends to make an impact on the running game. He will be backed up by Jim Martyniuk, who started his tenure with the Golden Hawks on the defence and then switched to offence last year. Manager of Football Operations & Head Coach
Gary Jeffries enters his 32nd season as part of the Golden Hawk football coaching staff. It was not until 1970 that Gary would find his home at Wilfrid Laurier University. He played football for two years from 1970-1971 and was named an All-Star Defensive Half-Back and Rookie of the Year. After his career at Laurier he was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 1972 and in 1973 he signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats but did not report. Gary also played four years in the Detroit Tiger organization prior to beginning his career at WLU. In 1973 he was hired at Laurier as an assistant football coach and recreation director. From 1984-1988 Jeffries was also the women’s basketball coach at Laurier. In 1989 he took a break from football and coached the men’s basketball team until 1996. In 1994 Rick Zmich convinced Jeffries to return to the game which he loves so much. Gary has coached 31 football seasons at Laurier, with 19 as Defensive Coordinator. He was named the interim head coach midway through the ’02 season and was named the full-

Ryan Pyear enters his fourth season as the Golden Hawk Offensive Coordinator after five outsanding years as Laurier’s starting Quarterback. As a player Ryan enjoyed much success and he now hopes to continue that tradition in the role of Offensive Coordinator. Some of Ryan’s playing accolades include being named as the OUA Rookie of the Year in 2001 after taking every single snap as a freshman. In 2004 Ryan was named as a firstteam OUA all-star and second-team all-Canadian, and in 2005 he reached both first-team all-conference and firstteam all-Canadian status. That same year he was awarded Uteck Bowl and Vanier Cup MVP on the way to Wilfrid Laurier’s national supremacy on the gridiron. Other awards include backto-back President’s Awards as Wilfrid Laurier’s top male athlete in 2004 and 2005. Ryan graduated in June 2006, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology. He has two brothers, Kyle and Tobin, who also played five years in the OUA and CIS at McMaster and Waterloo respectively. His mother, Betty, and father Barry, currently live in Ryan’s home town of Belleville, Ontario. Barry Pyear is also a football coach at Laurier, coaching the running backs.
Ron Vanmoerkerke is in his eleventh year coaching with the Golden Hawks. He returns again to the role of Defensive Coordinator, a position he has held since the 2003 season. Ron’s track record with Laurier is a long and storied one; he played in the late 80s and was on the 1987 Yates Cup championship team. In 1988, Ron received the WLU Alumni Association Academic and Athletic Achievement Award. In 1989, Ron was named an OUA first-team all-star linebacker and team MVP. At present, Ron is a teacher and the department head of social science at Eastwood Collegiate High School in Kitchener. Prior to becoming the Defensive Coordinator with the Hawks, Ron was the Head Coach at Eastwood and Galt Collegiate. Ron lives with his wife Karen and their daughter Grace and son Austin in West Montrose.
Alexander began his coaching career in the city leagues at age fifteen and won an OVFL Jr. Championship with the Twin City Predators in 2001, where he was the Defensive Coordinator. He played for the Golden Hawks from 1999 to 2003, and in this time was an all-star defensive lineman and Russ Jackson Award winner. After graduating, Alexander accepted a position as a graduate assistant coach at Mississippi College in Jackson, MS. where he was the offensive ;ine and tight ends coach. During this time, he attended Mississippi College where he obtained his Masters in Business Education. Upon completion, he entered the U.S. high school football scene as the linebackers coach and special teams Coordinator for Mary G. Montgomery High School, a 6A program in Mobile, Alabama. Coach Alexander returned to Canada and Laurier in 2007, joining the coaching staff as the offensive line coach. The 2008 season will be his 13th season walking the sidelines and he will start his second year as Special Teams coordinator for the Hawks. Coach Alexander is happily married to the love of his life, Monica, who is also a Laurier Alum. They have a wonderful son, Noah, who will celebrate his second birthday on September 12, 2009.

Since taking over at the helm of the Hawks, the team has gone 51-12-1 including victories in two Yates Cups (2004, 2005), one Uteck Bowl (2005), and one Vanier Cup (2005). Coach Jeffries has coached over 700 games in total for Laurier (both football and basketball), and his passion for Laurier sport remains undying. Gary has four children, Jonathan, Jodie, Jaime, and Ryan, grandchildren.

2 0 0 9 O U A O P P ONENT S September 7th – Laurier at Toronto, 7:00pm Head Coach: Greg DeLaval 2008 Record: 2-6 (8th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Toronto: 27-12 Current Streak: Laurier 10 wins, did not compete last season Outlook for 2009: The Toronto Varsity Blues finally broke their national record 49-game losing streak with two wins thanks to a large veteran presence in 2008, but their quarterback, top two rushers and receivers all graduated along with most of their offensive line. For the coming year the defence will be expected to tow the line for the first few games as the offence works their new weapons in at the skill positions. Scott Smith, who was a linebacker selected for the East-West Bowl, as well as Matt Morris and second year defensive lineman Lincoln Bryan will be important pieces in improving on a seventh ranked defence with the OUA last year. Quote from Head Coach: “We’ve got a lot of good players doing a lot of good things out here,” said DeLaval. “The intensity level amongst the players is high, which is great because we have a lot to work on as we prepare for the upcoming season. We lost some key players on offence and a lot of veteran leadership but I’m confident that our recruits and younger players can respond to the challenges they’ll face.” September 12 – Laurier at Western, 1:00pm Head Coach: Greg Marshall 2008 Record: 7-1 (2nd in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Western: 21-37-1 Current Streak: Western 2 wins Outlook for 2009: The Western Mustangs had a tremendous 2008 season, winning all but one of their regular season games and starting the year with a huge 22-point comeback victory over Ottawa. Western defeated Laurier in the semifinals before winning the Yates Cup over Ottawa. The Mustangs rode their success all the way into the Vanier Cup final before falling to the eventual national champion Laval. This year all-star quarterback Michael Faulds returns for a fifth year to lead an already impressive offence that added even more skill with running back Da’Shawn Thomas and graduate student Joshua Svec at wideout. Last year Western had ten all-stars and three all-Canadians, and returns 15 starters on both offence and defence. Quote from Head Coach: “The loss of Vaughn Martin leaves a big hole,” Marshall said. “Truthfully we don’t have a lot of depth at the defensive end spot. We may have to move some guys out there and try them out there and see (what happens). We’ll be tested at this position right away this season. We have two quarterbacks in Week 1 and Week 2 who can run with (Brad) Sinopoli in Ottawa and Luke Thompson with Laurier. We have to contain them or it’s gonna be a long day.”
October 3 – Ottawa vs. Laurier (Homecoming), 1:00pm Head Coach: Denis Piché 2008 Record: 4-4 (5th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Ottawa: 10-10-1 Current Streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2009: This season will be one of transition after an up and down year on the field. Ottawa suffered an injury plagued year leading to a .500 record before going on a spoiler run on the road in the playoffs. Led by all-time leading passer in OUA history Josh Sacobie, the Gee Gees beat Guelph and then handily defeated previously unbeaten Queen’s by ten points. Ottawa couldn’t keep the drive going as they lost at Western in the Yates Cup final. Not only will the passer be new, but Brad Sinopoli will have an almost entirely different receiving corps save for the returning Cyril Adjeity. The Gees Gee’s have the skills to be a very talented offence; depending on how quickly the team can gel in the upcoming season. Quote from Head Coach: “We will see how well our development program has prepared some of these young men…it is exciting. There will be new guys in different roles … It is our job to get these guys going.” October 10 – Windsor vs. Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Mike Morencie 2008 Record: 3-5 (7th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Windsor: 33-11-2 Current Streak: Laurier 2 wins Outlook for 2009: Last year was a true freshman season for quarterback Sam Malian who now carries the offensive load after record-setting running back Daryl Stephenson graduated. Malian connected for ten touchdowns compared to only five interceptions in a season that saw Windsor go 3-5 and just miss the playoffs with a loss in the final game of the year to McMaster. The defence will return ten starters as it looks to improve from being ranked 8th in the OUA. That side of the ball will be led by linebacker Chris Arquette who had a spot in the East-West Bowl and will try to help the team get better at stopping the ground attack in order to compete for a playoff spot. Quote from Head Coach: “We return seven players on offense and 10 players on defense for the 2009 season. The strength of our offense going into camp appears to be our offensive line with over 100 total career starts amongst the five starters. Sam Malian returns at quarterback and great things are expected of him. The defense will be veteran with the secondary being a much improved unit. In 2008 a number of freshmen played and gained valuable experience and that short term pain should turn into long term gain in 2009.”
September 19 – Waterloo vs. Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Dennis McPhee 2008 Record: 2-6 (9th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Waterloo: 36-14-1 Current Streak: Laurier 6 wins Outlook for 2009: The Warriors are looking to build on their improvements in 2008 and get back into playoff contention. The offence started to click last season and picked up 90 yards more per game then the previous year. Waterloo’s defence featured the OUA rookie of the year in linebacker Jordan Verdone, who will need to lead the development of the defensive corps now that the starters have another year under their belts. The Warriors have great potential at their skill positions and after returning 19 starters can hope to make the turn from youthful raw talent to veteran experience. Two of those returning players, Fourth year quarterback Evan Martin and fifth year veteran wide receiver Sean Cowie, will have a harder time connecting now that outside threat Josh Svec has transferred to Western. Quote from Head Coach: “There is an expectation every year to get better. There is a high level of commitment to play here at Waterloo. We are closer to raising the level of excellence athletically to the level of the University of Waterloo academically. It is a privilege not a right to play Warrior Football.”
October 17 – Laurier at Guelph, 1:00pm Head Coach: Kyle Walters 2008 Record: 4-4 (4th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Guelph: 36-13 Current Streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2009: The Gryphons lost three games by a total of eight points last year leading to an exit in the first round of the playoffs. While the team had the third best point differential, the defence gave up over 600 yards in three games. The running game was second in the country and sees veteran back Nick Fitzgibbon return along with fifth year quarterback Justin Dunk. Guelph will have to cut back on penalties too after being the second most penalized team in the league. With another year of experience the core of the team looks ready to step up and improve on last year’s even record in the regular season. Quote from Head Coach: “This is the foundation for a very strong recruiting class. A lot of these players will be expected to contribute early in their careers. This is a group of young men who are excited to be Gryphons, but more importantly will represent the University of Guelph as student athletes over the next four years. Last season our defence was young and they gained valuable experience and I expect the benefits to be seen this season. I think our defence will be tougher against the run and athletic in the secondary to cover the oppositions receivers”
September 26 – Laurier at McMaster, 1:00pm Head Coach: Stefan Ptaszek 2008 Record: 4-4 (6th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. McMaster: 41-12-1 Current Streak: Laurier 6 wins Outlook for 2009: The Marauders put on a late charge in the secondhalf of last season to make it into the playoffs after starting 0-3. While they did show spurts of offensive talent, McMaster is looking to become more of a threat to score and put their shutout loss in the playoffs to Laurier firmly in the past. The potential for a rebound year in 2009 is strong as they are returning 17 starters including the entire offensive and defensive lines as well as quarterback Ryan Fantham and slotback Kevin D’Hollander. Where the Marauders will surely be tested is their pass defence, which sees only five experienced DBs in their secondary. Ultimately how they play against other middle of the pack opponents will determine if McMaster can get back into the top four in the OUA. Quote from Head Coach: “I am optimistic about the season. We have a solid group of returning players, coupled with an outstanding recruiting class. I am really looking forward to getting on the field.”
October 24 – Queen’s vs. Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Pat Sheahan 2008 Record: 8-0 (1st in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Queen’s: 5-5 Current Streak: Queen’s 1 win Outlook for 2009: A perfect season for the first time in 20 years, the nation’s defensive player of the year and coach of the year all contributed to an incredible season for Queen’s, until the playoffs. Boasting the most balanced team on offence in the country the only problem came when injuries to running back Mike Griffin and defensive player of the year Thaine Carter crippled the Gaels in their home loss to Ottawa in the provincial semifinal. The upcoming season will see the core remain intact; giving the Gaels the ability to put up some points, but it will be a torch-passing year on the defensive side of the ball. The front seven will have three new starters with Shomari Williams, a transfer from the University of Houston, being the most anticipated roster addition for Queen’s. Quote from Head Coach: “Guys are coming back with resolve and we have a nucleus of veterans who will have last year in mind.”

PAIR OF FOOTBALL LINEMEN ENTER THE The annual Golden Hawk Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place on October 2nd, 2009 and this year’s induction group includes two football alumni. Justin Shakell and James Hitchen will both be added to the elite group of what will now be 38 football players. Being inducted along side Shakell and Hitchen are Alison Goodman (hockey/soccer), Kate Jackson (rugby), Cathy Ingalls (volleyball) and alum Bill Ballard as a builder. In addition to the individuals the 199899 women’s hockey team will become the 14th roster to be inducted. Justin Shakell (#91) arrived at Laurier as a well-rounded multi-sport athlete who had been sought after by countless schools in the OUA to play defensive lineman
for their football programs. Justin dressed every game during his freshman year and was one of the building blocks behind three Yates Cup appearances during his fiveyear career. On the defensive side of the ball his impact was felt in many ways. Justin was second on the team with three sacks that year and his locker room presence and leadership continued to grow earning him the 2001 team Most Valuable Player award. The following season he was recognized for his performance as an OUA first team all-star. In his final year Justin was a team captain and through his strong performance that

2009 GOLDEN HAWK HALL OF FAME season he earned both OUA first team all-star and CIS first team all-Canadian honours as well as his second Laurier football Most Valuable Player award. James Hitchen (#65) excelled as an offensive lineman with the Golden Hawks football program for four years. James came in and worked hard in training camp, earning a starting position during his freshman year. He would go on to maintain this position throughout his entire career. His efforts on the offensive line earned him the Laurier football Rookie of the Year award in 1997. In his third season, James was named an OUA second team all-star and helped Laurier reach the Yates Cup for the first time in four years. His final season was in 2000 and James was named one of the team’s captains. In the same year, the Golden Hawks again made it to the Yates Cup and James’ superb play not only earned him an OUA first team all-star award but he was also named a CIS first team all-Canadian. James continued to work with the Laurier Football program as Offensive Line Assistant Coach from 2003-2005, finally winning both the Yates Cup and the Vanier Cup in 2005.
