2010-2011 Season In Review The 2010-2011 season has started, bringing some changes to last year’s lineup. Former women’s skip Danielle Inglis has now graduated after winning back-to-back CIS championships in 2008-2009. Stepping into her place is Laura Crocker, who was promoted from vice, which she played in the previous year. Also returning to the team is Sarah Wilkes at the position of vice. Playing second is newcomer Jenny Gates, and filling the lead position is rookie Cheryl Kreviazuk. Pamela Feldkamp and Olivia Beirnes rounded out the team as alternates. For the men’s team, all of last year’s players returned for another year of varsity competition. Throwing skip is now Matthew Mapletoft, who had to step into the alternate position for last year’s CIS championship because of a time conflict with Junior Worlds. After skipping the team at last year’s CIS competition, Scott McGregor moved into the vice position, along with Shane Konings at second, and Joel Waters returning to the lead position. Dave Kaun and Ian Romansky also came back to fill the role of alternates. Since last year, the OUA has changed the format of the provincial playdowns. The previous year’s playdowns included sectionals, followed by crossovers, and concluded with the OUA Championship. This year, the format has been shortened to only a five-day long OUA Championship. Since this limits the amount of games against other university teams, Laurier entered both teams into two interuniversity bonspiels. The first interuniversity bonspiel was held at the Thornhill Curling Club and hosted by the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Being a fully returning team, the Laurier men started off strong, beating Brock, Waterloo, and Toronto, ending the spiel with a 3-0 record. The women played the same teams, but struggled against Toronto, leaving them with a respectable 2-1 record. The second interuniversity bonspiel was held at the Welland Curling Club, hosted by the Brock Badgers. The men beat the OUA alternates team, as well as Toronto, but gave up tough games to Guelph and Brock, leaving the men at 2-2 after the weekend. The women won against the OUA alternates, Brock, and Trent, while losing a game against Guelph. This gave the Hawks a weekend win-loss record of 3-1. As the OUA competition approached, both the Laurier teams had a 5-2 record, and showed that they were going to be a force to be reckoned with in the OUA Championship. In the first day, the Laurier men and women started out strong, taking 3 wins each and setting the mood for the whole weekend. The opening games for both teams were against the Toronto Varsity Blues. The men had a tougher time, but still came out ahead 6-5, while the women kept the pressure on their opponent for a 5-2 win. The next draw was against the Windsor Lancers. The men put on a strong showing and defeated the Lancers 8-2, while the women played a higher scoring game, coming out on top 9-5. The third game for both teams was against the Queen's Gaels. For the men, this was a big game, as Queen's was the reigning CIS Champion. The Golden Hawks put up a solid effort, winning the game early with a score of 6-2. The women’s team also ended the day on a strong note, narrowly taking the win, 5-4. The next day consisted of two tough games against the Western Mustangs and the Laurentian Voyageurs. The first team the Laurier men and women played against was a very experienced Western. In the men’s game, the Mustangs put up a valiant effort, ending the game with a score of 7-5 for Laurier. The women had a similar situation with a skilled opponent, but ended up ahead by one point, keeping both Laurier teams undefeated at 5-0. The last game of the day was against Laurentian, who put up a fight against both Golden Hawk teams. The men’s game ended in a very close 5-4 game, while the women won by a score of 5-3, leaving both Laurier teams going into the third day with a 5-0 perfect record. The Trent Excalibur were the first on the list for day three. The men’s team having a large amount of provincial experience. The Laurier men started out slow, at one point being four points down with the hammer and only a few ends to go. After this, the team showed resilience, coming back to cut the deficit down to two points with one end to go, with the hammer. In this last end, the men came together to make crucial shots and pulled out the win by taking three points, ending the game 6-5. The women didn’t keep the game as close as the men’s and ended up with a comfortable 7-3 victory. The next match was against the Waterloo Warriors. On the men’s side, Laurier slowly built up a lead, forcing the rivals down the street to make important shots, leading to a 4-1 win for the Golden Hawk men. The women Hawks and Warriors have a long history, with the most recent battle being last year’s OUA final, where Waterloo won the gold medal game by mere centimeters. The Hawks did not let this happen again, and put the pressure on Waterloo, bringing Laurier to a 6-1 victory. This guaranteed both Laurier teams to be seeded in the top two, regardless of the next game’s outcome. The last day before the finals put the Golden Hawks up against Lakehead University. Both men’s and women’s teams dominated their opponents winning 10-2 and 8-2 respectively., After the modified round robin, where Laurier played every team except Guelph and Brock, both teams were seeded at the number one spot. On the men’s side, the Golden Hawk’s took on Laurentian in the first vs. fourth seed playoff. Knowing that this was not an easy game, the men started off struggling, making the match a very close one. In the last few ends, the Hawks found their groove and started to put pressure on Laurentian, ending the game in a 5-4 win. The victory punched Laurier's ticket to the gold medal game. The women found themselves in the same position, playing the fourth seeded team, the Western Mustangs. The girls started off with a solid performance, making Western throw crucial shots to take minimal points. The Hawks took advantage of the hammer, ending the game in a 7-2 win, with the only match left being the gold medal final.

Going into the gold medal games, both Laurier teams were undefeated with their eye on being the OUA champions of 2011. The men were up to face the Trent Excalibur, who handed the Hawks the closest game in the round robin. The experienced Trent team gave Laurier a run for their money, as it was a back-and-forth match until the final end. The opposing skip was forced to draw to a side-piece of the button. This was a very difficult shot to leave Trent for the win, and was elegantly made, leaving Laurier with the OUA silver medal. The women were put up against the Guelph Gryphons, a new team to the OUA this year. The Golden Hawks played consistently well, powering over the Gryphons with a comfortable 10-4 win, and awarding the Hawks with an OUA gold medal and an undefeated OUA Championship.

Golden Hawk Staff

Gary Crossley - Head Coach Gary brings a unique and fresh perspective to the team in his first year as head coach with his coaching background rooted in both track and curling. He is a NCCP Level 3 coach for curling. Gary coached seven track teams at nationals including five as head coach, as well as three teams to the world stage. His former track athletes have won over 50 medals at National championships, ranked as high as fourth in the World and competed in every international competition Canada is involved in - Worlds, Commonwealth, Pan Ams and Olympics. Gary is the former National Chair for women's hurdles and also the former Chair of the Ontario Coaches Council. He has coached numerous curling teams to the regional level, as well as a men's team to the provincial level. Gary is a very active member in the community, as he established the Kitchener-Waterloo Junior Cashspiel, is currently a member of the Board at the KW Granite Club and formerly the President of the Elmira Curling Club. He also manages to squeeze in time for his own recreation at the KW Granite Club as a full time member curling a couple nights per week. Gary has three adutls children, two of which are Laurier grads.

Maurice Wilson - Assistant Coach In his first season as an assistant coach, Maurice brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team with many provincial and national coaching opportunities under his belt. Maurice has coached for 30 years in various sports from fastpitch softball at a national level, to basketball, soccer, track and field, cricket and ice hockey at a Senior level. Maurice is a NCCP Level 3 coach for curling and has coached 10 teams to the provincials . The best finishes for the teams were a finalist position at the 2000 Ontario Bantam provincials, first place at the 2001 Ontario Bantam Provincials and champions at the 2003 Ontario Junior Provincials, qualifying the team for the Junior Canadians. Maurice then coached the team to a 9-3 record at the Karcher Nationals in Ottawa, Ontario. He was also the recipient of the Asham Coaching Award in back to back years in 2003 and 2004 at Junior Provincials. Maurice is also very active in the curling community as a Trillium High Performance Camp coach since 2006 and Provincial Learning Facilitator since 2005.

Olivia Beirnes Position: Alternate Height: 5-4 Year: 1 Hometown: Fergus, Ont.

Program: Ecomonics

Quick facts: Olivia is a familiar face on the junior curling circuit, and another rookie on the Laurier curling team. Olivia has shown great confidence in stepping in when needed, and being supportive at the alternate position. She has also participated in the 2010 Mixed Provincial Championship. This year, Olivia helped the Hawks grab the gold medal at the OUA Championship.

Laura Crocker

Position: Skip Height: 5-2 Year: 3 Program: Psychology Hometown: Scarborough, Ont. Quick facts: : Laura has been an integral part of the team since she started curling for Laurier in 2008. On the competitive junior circuit, in addition to numerous provincial appearances, she has won back-to-back Ontario Junior Championship titles in 2010 and 2011 on two separate teams. In 2010, Laura went on to represent Canada in the World Junior Championship in Switzerland, where she brought home a silver medal. This year, she has made an appearance at Junior Nationals and won an OUA gold medal, as well as being elected the skip of the first team allstars.

Pam Feldkamp

Position: Alternate Height: 5-1 Year: 3 Program: Economics Hometown: Burlington, Ont. Quick facts:Although only being in her second year on the Laurier team, Pam brings a wealth of experience to the table. In 2008, she represented Ontario at Junior Nationals, won the OFSAA championship, and was the runner-up at the Bantam Provincial championship. She was also the recipient of the Quest for Gold funding in 2009 and competed in the 2006 Ontario Winter Games, winning bronze. This year, Pam was the runner up at the Ontario Junior Provincial Championship, and won OUA gold.

Jenny Gates

Position: Second Height: 5-4 Year: 3 Hometown: Sudbury, Ont.

Program: Comm. Std.

Quick facts: New to Laurier, Jen has a long record of being known to compete at a high performance level. She has won the Northern Ontario Bantam Championship three years in a row from 2005 to 2007, and then gone on to win the Northern Ontario Junior Championship three years in a row from 2009 to 2011. This resulted in three visits to the Canadian Junior Championship, her best result being bronze in 2010. She has also performed exceptionally well on the varsity level, winning an OUA gold and silver in her varsity career, as well as a CIS bronze last year. Jen was also named the second of the first all-star team this year at OUAs.

Cheryl Kreviazuk Position: Lead Height: 5-5 Year: 1 Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.

Program: Kin./Phys. Ed.

Quick facts: Cheryl has brought a lot of accomplishments to the table, especially for being a rookie this year. She was the Ontario Bantam Championship winner in 2009, which led to a fourth place finish at the Under-18 Optimist International event. This year, Cheryl was the winner of the Toronto Curling Association tournament and the runner-up of the Ontario Junior Championship. With Laurier, Cheryl contributed to an undefeated OUA weekend and gold medal.

Sarah Wilkes

Position: Vice Height: 5-9 Year: 3 Program: Psychology Hometown: Scarborough, Ont. Quick facts: Sarah has a long history with the Golden Hawks, being Rookie of the Year in 2009, as well as bringing home OUA bronze and CIS gold in the same year. She has a long accomplished career on the junior circuit, being the runner up of the Ontario Provincial Championship last year, and then going on to win the Provincial title this year, leading to an appearance at the Canadian National Championship. This year she has also won an OUA gold medal, and was appointed the OUA first team all-star vice.

In 2009, he was part of the Golden Hawks team that brought home the silver medal. Dave also skipped his team to the 2007 NWOSSAA championship, and then participated in the Northern Ontario Junior Provincials as a vice. In 2011, Dave helped the Laurier team towards an OUA silver medal.

Shane Konings Position: Second Height: 6-0 Year: 3 Hometown: Gowanston, Ont.

Program: Geography

Quick facts: In 2009, Shane was part of the team who brought home the OUA silver medal. He is also a regular on the competitive junior circuit, competing in many provincial championships. Shane is known for winning the prestigious Toronto Curling Association tournament in December 2008 as vice, which resulted in international experience for the Laurier second. In 2010, he played vice for Laurier at the CIS championship in Edmonton. This year, Shane was appointed the vice of the OUA first team all-stars, as well as winning a silver medal.

Matthew Mapletoft Position: Skip Height: 5-10 Year: 4 Hometown: Wallaceburg, Ont.

Program: Political Science

Quick facts:In 2008, Matt won OUA and CIS gold throwing lead. Matt also competed in the 24th Winter Universiade in Harbin, China in February 2009 after winning both OUA and CIS championships. In 2010, Matt won the Ontario Provincials and the Canadian Juniors, which resulted in competing at the World Junior Championship in Switzerland. Here, he brought the bronze medal back home for Canada. In 2011, Matt led the team to claiming the OUA silver medal, and was selected for the skip position of the OUA first team all-stars.

Golden Hawks

Scott McGregor Position: Vice Height: 6-3 Year: 4 Hometown: Exeter, Ont.

Program: Business

Quick facts: Scott was part of the team that won OUA and CIS gold in 2008. He also represented Canada in the 24th Winter Universiade in Harbin, China in 2009. In that same year, Scott competed at Junior Nationals representing Team Ontario, after winning the Ontario Junior Championship. Scott stepped in as skip last year for Laurier, bringing the team to the CIS Championship in Edmonton, Alberta. This year, Scott won silver at the OUA Championship, and was named the first team all-star for the vice position.

Ian Romansky

Position: Alternate Height: 5-9 Year: 2 Program: Computer Science Hometown: Chatham, Ont. Quick facts: Ian has been a great fit for the team this year with his wealth of experience and ability to adapt to various positions on the team. He was the 2008 Bantam Boys Provincial Winner and also the Ontario Winter Games bronze medalist. In 2010, Ian won the Ontario Junior Curling Championship, as well as competed at CIS with the Laurier team. This year, he obtained an OUA silver medal with Laurier.

Joel Waters

Position: Lead Height: 5-9 Year: 2 Program: Business Hometown: Georgetown, Ont. Quick facts: His second year on the team, Joel has already made his mark by winning the OUA First Team All-Star award for 2009-2010 in his first year, as well as competing it the CIS championship in Edmonton. In competitive play outside of the university, Joel has competed in numerous provincials, as well as the 2008 Ontario Winter Games where he placed fourth. In 2011, Joel threw lead for Laurier, bringing them to an OUA silver medal.

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontarioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s provincially assisted universities after Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
