2013 Season in Review For the second consecutive year, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer program had to deal with the loss of a number of key veteran players as they entered the season. Four fifth year seniors departed the team following the Hawks OUA Silver Medal and seventh place finish at the CIS Championship including veteran defenders Kelsey Abbott and Jessica Carter, along with forwards Krista Cellucci and Erin Grand. Once again looking to patch the holes left by significant departures, head coach Barry MacLean brough in five rookies to the squad as he looked to rebuild his program back up to the stature it enjoyed when it won CIS Silver in 2010. Now featuring 17 players in their first or second year of eligibility, the Hawks stumbled out of the gate, at least compared to their usual standards. The No. 8 ranked team in Canada tied McMaster and lost to Windsor within the first two weeks of the season, dropping them from the national rankings. In unfamiliar territory, the purple and gold battled to find their team identity through the remainder of the month but still managed to maintain their place near the top of the OUA West Division. The turning point for the team came in an early October game against the Waterloo Warriors. Fresh off a 2-1 loss to the UOIT Ridgebacks, the Hawks put on an offensive display, led by last year's CIS Second Team All-Canadian forward Emily Brown. Brown set a new team record as she scored five goals in the game giving Laurier a 5-0 win. That win sparked the team and over the rest of the month, the Hawks posted a 5-1-1 record, with their only loss coming to the now No. 1 ranked Western Mustangs. Brown, who had only scored four times prior to the Waterloo match, netted 14 goals over the final seven games to capture the OUA scoring title and OUA West MVP honours for the second consecutive season. As a team, Laurier finished second in the division with a 9-3-4 record, giving them the all-important first round playoff bye. Matching up with the aforementioned Ridgebacks in the OUA Quarter-finals, the Hawks played one of their most complete games of the season. Laurier shutdown UOIT and coverted their scoring opportunities en route to a 2-0 win, sending them to their seventh consecutive OUA Final Four tournament. After some fireworks in the OUA East division playoffs, the Hawks took on the East's third-seeded team, the Carleton Ravens in the semifinals. Struggling against an unfamiliar opponent who they hadn't faced since 2008, Laurier's defence and goalkeeping kept the Ravens at bay, eventually forcing penalty kicks. Needing seven rounds, a goal from Amanda Mithrush and a save from keeper Katrina Ward propelled the Hawks through to their fourth-straight appearance in the gold medal game. Facing off against the host Mustangs, the Hawks employed a very strategic game plan in the hopes of limiting the attacking prowess of Western's forwards. The defensive game plan worked as Laurier nullified many Western scoring opportunities thanks to strong play from the back four and solid goalkeeping by Ward. Despite having numerous scoring chances of their own, the two teams would play to a 0-0 tie, forcing penalties. Leading 2-1 in the fourth round, defender Sarah Farano stepped up and deposited the championship-clinching goal past Western's keeper to give the Hawks their second OUA title in last four years, and third in the last six. Having qualified for their fourth consecutive CIS Championship, the Hawks will look to improve upon their last two showings which have seen them finish tied for seventh in both 2011 and 2012.

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities after Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
