GOLDEN HAWK NEWSLETTER

“Building Champions, Building Traditions”

VOLUME 16, ISSUE 1 At Laurier, our mission is to inspire lives of leadership and purpose. And thanks to the passionate engagement of our students, alumni, Dr. Max Blouw faculty and staff members, we see this ideal in action every day. Laurier’s student athletes are a shining example of what it means to live a life of leadership and purpose. Our Golden Hawks were once again a source of immense pride for the university throughout the past academic year. During 2014-15, we were treated to so many wonderful athletic accomplishments from our student athletes. But what we aren’t able to see on the field, on the court, or on the ice is what dynamic leaders our Golden Hawks are in the classroom and the community. Laurier athletes are widely known for their academic achievement and tireless volunteer work. These are individuals who develop into leaders at Laurier and go on to engage meaningfully in their careers, communities and personal lives. This university takes great pride in our athletic programs and the wonderful people who make them possible. From the student athletes who so impressively balance their academics and volunteer work with their athletic pursuits; to the coaches, managers, trainers and athletic staff who give so much of their time and energy to help the Golden Hawks succeed. Hawks find gold in 2014-15

The women’s curling team successfully defended their OUA Championship and went on to win the national bronze medal at the CIS Championships.

The Golden Hawks had an intense 2014-15 year highlighting team improvements and individual successes. The climactic athletic achievement this year was the OUA double gold achieved by the men’s and women’s curling teams, followed by both teams medalling at the national level. Although they missed out on provincial championships, women’s basektball had one of the best regular seasons on record, going 17-3 and including a victory over the four-time defending CIS Champions, the Windsor Lancers. The Hawks football team saw great improvement from last year under Head Coach Michael Faulds. The men recorded a 4-4 season, made a playoff appearance, and had several players with record-setting seasons. The women’s soccer team lost only one game all season, a stellar improvement over last season, but were eliminated from OUA playoffs before the medal rounds. Off the court, Laurier’s student-athletes excelled in the classroom as 25 Hawks earned CIS Academic honours and ten earned OUA Academic honours. In the community, the Hawks were all hands on deck: from the Letterman Club making hospital visits, to members of the football team reading to children in elementary school, to women’s basketball athletes volunteering in phys. ed. classes at local high schools, the purple and gold were representing Laurier across the Kitchener-Waterloo community. Here is a closer look at your Golden Hawk highlights for 2014-15. Keeping the ‘gold’ in Golden Hawks this year were both varsity curling teams; the only teams to bring home OUA Championship banners this season. The men’s team went

undefeated for a perfect 6-0 regular season before advancing to the OUA Championships to earn their first OUA gold since the 20072008 season. To add on to their remarkable season, the Hawks had the honour of hosting the CIS Championships on their home ice at the KW Granite Club. The Golden Hawks shone at the national competition, and with the Alberta Golden Bears as the only team to claim a victory over them, the men’s varsity team finished with a 7-2 tournament record and the CIS silver medal. Richard Krell was honoured as a CIS First Team All-Canadian and OUA First Team All-Star. Spencer Nuttall achieved CIS Second Team All-Canadian and OUA First Team All-Star status, while Fraser Reid and Aaron Squires both received CIS First Team All-Canadian honours. The women’s curling team collected a 6-4 regular season record before successfully defending their 2013-2014 title to win their second consecutive OUA Championship gold. The Hawks then returned home with the provincial gold in their pockets to host the CIS Curling Championship, where both teams medaled yet again. This time, the women’s team collected the national bronze medal for the second consecutive year with a 6-3 tournament record and Evangeline Fortier received OUA Second Team All-Star status. The women’s basketball team played their best regular season record in program history with a 17-3 record. The purple and gold team stacked up an outstanding 12-game win streak in regular season, which included a 60-53 upset victory over the first-ranked team in the nation, the Windsor Lancers.

A Message from Peter Baxter With another successful sport season now behind us in which Laurier reached our 68th OUA Championship to go along side our 13 National Championships, it seems timely to reflect on the Peter Baxter past year at Laurier Athletics and Recreation, our context, and our plans and prospects for the future. Another Year of Excellence Wilfrid Laurier University continues to be one of Canada’s finest Athletic and Recreation institutions - a fact confirmed by Canadian Intramural and Recreation Association CIRA Ontario, who awarded Laurier their Banner of Excellence for the eighth consecutive year. In addition, Laurier teams combined for a remarkable overall winning percentage of 66.7% with a record of 143-68-13. Laurier won 2 provincial OUA titles in men’s and women’s curling and our cheerleading team won a national championship in the University All-Girl Division at the Canadian Championships for the 2nd year in a row. Internationally, student-athletes represented Canada at the World University Games including Laura Brooker, who won a silver medal in women’s hockey in Granada, Spain, and men’s rugby’s Nathan Roberts who compete in 7’s rugby in Brazil. Roberts’ teammate Andrew Quattrin also suited up for Canada with an under 18 squad that toured Romania in November while Mackenzie Harris represented Canada at the International Cheerleading Championships in Disney World. Laurier’s standing in sport and recreation has been strikingly consistent across our teams and programming. Ours is one of a handful of universities in Canada that measures up well across the spectrum of activities, sports, and leadership opportunities. This breadth and depth of excellence speaks volumes about our world-class coaches, gifted students, and dedicated staff. Our coaches and staff are a remarkably varied and energetic group, and we owe them all a huge debt of gratitude.

2

That is perhaps a useful segue to considering the variety of awards, prizes and distinctions earned by our Laurier Athletics and Recreation community— a great many of them by students which are highlighted in the contents of this newsletter. A most special

achievement to be proud of is that 35 studentathletes achieved OUA and CIS Academic All-Canadian status. Laurier student-athletes collectively have a higher graduation rate than the Laurier student population not involved in varsity athletics. Match this with the 35 OUA All-star selections and 10 CIS AllCanadian honoured athletes and we truly do have exceptional people who “Inspire Lives of Leadership and Purpose!” The Landscape of University Sport in 201516 and Investing in the Future The accomplishments of members of Laurier Athletics and Recreation over the past year are all the more remarkable when one considers the landscape of university sport heading into 2015-16. The economic recession has forced deep cuts to athletic and recreation programs across Canada. Laurier has not been immune to this reality. Compounding the problem, Laurier’s student population has grown to 17,000 students and the demand by all fee-paying students for programs, services and facilities are at an all-time high. The global economy is still unsettled. Universities across Canada are facing deep cuts. As a result, there are rapid changes afoot in university sport. The competition in recruiting the top gifted student-athletes has intensified. Other university alumni groups at Guelph, Queen’s and Western have stepped up to ensure that their programs have the resources to enhance these programs. There is no more important time within our history that we need our athletic alumni and supporters to step up also. From my perspective, our ongoing success depends on sustaining time-honoured links to our alumni, sponsors, and friends. In 2011, our Laurier students supported a referendum to fund the $5 million dollar expansion of our Fitness Centre which was completed in November of 2013. Student body investment, volunteerism, alumni donations, and corporate sponsorship have been cornerstones of the Golden Hawk tradition of excellence. Through their generosity— whether they have shared their time, their expertise, or their financial resources in whatever measure— individual students, alumni and friends, along with a range of local and national companies have helped enrich the student experience. They have helped build our buildings, mentor our students— they have built community. We are truly grateful for all this support. I am sure that your experience at Laurier was an important time in your development as a leader. Laurier needs you now to help

us remain the destination of choice for top prospective student-athletes. Please consider donating to support your sport team where 100% of your donation will go to support our teams and you will be provided with a tax receipt for the full amount. With as little as $100 donated by each former athlete, this annually could raise well over $500,000 of which could help secure and enhance the student-athlete experience at Laurier. I very much hope we can count on your continued involvement and support in the years ahead. Finally, this year’s Homecoming celebrations will mark the 10th Anniversary of our 2005 Vanier Cup Football Team win vs the University of Saskatchewan. That epic field goal made by Hawk Hall of Famer Bryan Devlin with 19 seconds to go to put the purple and gold ahead 24-23 will be etched as one of the Golden Hawks’ greatest moments in CIS History. Please join us both at the team induction on Friday September 25th at the Annual Laurier Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Dinner and at our Homecoming Football Game vs the Windsor Lancers on Saturday September 26th to honour our 2005 Vanier Cup Championship Team. I am looking forward to celebrating our rich tradition of excellence and share in the history-making which, no doubt, our student-athletes and leaders will accomplish this coming season. I invite you to share that vantage point with me during the 2015-16 season in the stands. Go Hawks! Sincerely,

Peter Baxter M.A. Director Athletics and Recreation

2015 Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Inductees

This fall, the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawk Hall of Fame will welcome eight new members as part of the 2015 induction class. The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 25 at the Waterloo Inn during Laurier’s annual Homecoming weekend. The 2005 men’s football team, which captured the second Vanier Cup in Wilfrid 2005 Men’s Football Laurier’s history, will enter the Hall of Fame ten years removed from their thrilling championship run. Guided by head coach Gary Jeffries, the purple and gold went undefeated through the regular season, posting a perfect 8-0 record for the second consecutive year. Rolling into the playoffs as the top seed in the OUA, the Golden Hawks dispatched the McMaster Marauders in the semifinals to set up a showdown with their rivals, the Western Mustangs. In a dominant performance, the Hawks shut down the Mustangs with an outstanding defensive game plan as they won 29-11 to capture their second straight Yates Cup title. Laurier then headed out to the Maritimes to face Acadia in the Uteck Bowl, the national semifinal game. Laurier easily defeated the Axemen 31-10 to advance to their fifth appearance in the national championship game. Entering the Vanier Cup as underdogs to the Saskatchewan Huskies, Laurier stuck with the Canada West Champions throughout the contest. Trailing 23-21 late in the game, kicker Brian Devlin booted a 32-yard field goal that would stand up as the winning points in the contest to give the Golden Hawks the victory. Both Andy Baechler and Nick Cameron were members of that 2005 Vanier Cup-winning team and they will also enter the Hall of Fame as individual athletes in Andy Baechler September. A two-time Yates Cup Champion, Baechler was named the Yates Cup MVP during his first OUA Championship game in 2004, the same

year he was also named an OUA All-Star twice, earning First Team All-Star honours as a kick returner and Second Team recognition as a receiver. In 2006, Baechler was named a CIS First Team All-Canadian and an OUA First Team All-Star and in his final season in 2007, he was honoured once again as an OUA Second Team All-Star. The Ayr, Ont., native finished his career, which spanned from 2003 to 2007 third on Laurier’s all-time receiving yards list with 2,262 yards and third for career receiving touchdowns with 20.

Meanwhile, Cameron also enjoyed an outstanding career at Laurier as he was also a two-time Yates Cup Champion to go along with the Vanier Cup title. The Golden Hawks Nick Cameron running back was the MVP of the 2005 Yates Cup game, the same year he also cracked the 1,000 yard rushing mark. For his outstanding year, the native of Norland, Ont., was named a CIS Second Team All-Canadian and an OUA First Team All-Star. Cameron currently ranks fifth on Laurier’s all-time rushing yards list with 2,402 yards in five years between 2001 and 2005, and is fifth in career rushing touchdowns with 18. The third member of the Golden Hawks football program to be inducted this year is Giancarlo Rapanaro, who suited up for the purple and Giancarlo Rapanaro gold between 2006 and 2010. A member of Wilfrid Laurier’s Team of the Century as a linebacker, Rapanaro was twice named a CIS All-Canadian, first as a member of the second team in 2009 and then as a member of the first team in 2010. That same year, his final at Laurier, he became the eighth Golden Hawk to be honoured as the top stand-up defensive player in the OUA, taking home the President’s Trophy. A three-time OUA First Team All-Star, Rapanaro finished his career with 130.5 tackles and 16.5 sacks, the latter ranking him second all-time at Laurier. Andrea Ironside is the first of two women’s hockey players to enter the Hall of Fame in 2015. A forward who won five OUA Championships during her career between 2005-06 and 2009-10, Andrea Ironside Ironside was also a threetime CIS Tournament All-Star won three silver and one bronze medal at the CIS Championship. During the 2008-09 season, when she recorded career-highs in goals (15), assists (18) and points (33), she was named a CIS Second Team All-Canadian

to go along with earning OUA All-Star honours on four occasions. She would finish with 122 points which ranks her third all-time with the Golden Hawks. Lauren Barch joins her former teammate Ironside in representing women’s hockey in this year’s class. Suiting up for Laurier from 2005-06 to 200809, Barch is a four-time Lauren Barch OUA Champion and was named the OUA Player of the Year in 2007-08. That season, she scored 15 goals and added 16 assists as she was also named a CIS Second Team All-Canadian, an OUA First Team All-Star and took home Laurier’s President’s Award as the top female athlete. Over the course of her career, Barch was recognized as an OUA All-Star on two other occasions and in her rookie season, took home Laurier’s Rich Newbrough Rookie of the Year Award. She would finish her career with 109 points in 102 games, ranking her fifth all-time with the purple and gold. The final athlete inducted as a part of this year’s class is Kirsten Gerrie, who is also a four-time OUA Champion in women’s lacrosse. During her career from 2005 to 2008, Gerrie was named Kirsten Gerrie an OUA All-Star each season she played and took home OUA Offensive MVP honours in 2007. That year, she led the OUA in points in 26 thanks to 17 goals and nine assists. She was also recognized with Laurier’s Rich Newbrough Rookie of the Year award back in 2005 when she scored an impressive 36 goals in her rookie campaign. Paul Giannelia enters the Hall of Fame in the builders category thanks to his support on a number of infrastructure projects over the years. Among the projects Paul Giannelia he has helped get off the ground are the development of the Laurier Athletics website, the construction of Alumni Field and the University Stadium renovation. Giannelia, who received the CIS Lester B. Pearson Award in 2000 as a distinguished Canadian citizen of outstanding achievements who participated in university sport, was captain of Laurier’s football team in 1967-68 who led the development and construction of the $1-billion Confederation Bridge that spans the Northumberland Strait between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

Dillon Campbell captures OUA MVP honours in football continued from cover page...

The Hawks looked unstoppable as they continued to rack up victories and climb up the rankings, but Laurier’s post-season ended as dramatically and all too soon when the Queen’s Gaels forced the OUA Quarter-final game into overtime and stole an 85-78 victory. Headlining this cinematic season was centre Whitney Ellenor of Pickering, Ont. and guard Lee Anna Osei of Toronto, Ont. Ellenor received CIS Second Team All-Canadian honours this year as well as OUA First Team All-Star honours. She tallied 318 points on 133 field goals and 52 free throws. She also led her team with 177 rebounds and 43 blocks this season. Osei received the honours of being named OUA Second Team All-Star and was also awarded the OUA Joy Bellinger Award. She led her team this season with 55 assists and also notched 82 rebounds and 26 steals. On the pitch the women’s soccer team went almost undefeated with a stellar 12-1-3 record, improving significantly over the 9-3-4 regular season record of last season, and looking in fine form heading into OUA playoffs with hopes to defend their OUA Championship title from 2013-14. A victory over the York Lions followed by an overtime loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees set the Hawks up to face UOIT for a bronzeor-nothing showdown. The Hawks were disappointed with a 2-0 loss to end their season. Emily Brown was named a CIS second team All-Canadian, and she, Katie Bishop, Kelsey Tikka, and Julie Maheu were all honoured with OUA first team All-Star status. Jessica Craig and Pauline McCordic received OUA second team All-Star status,

goals in a single season; defensive back Chris Ackie who recorded seven tackles in a single game; and defensive lineman Kwaku Boateng who recorded four sacks in a single game. The Hawks then went into OUA playoffs with a Quarer-final game against the Western Mustangs. Although the 25-10 loss to the Mustangs resulted in elimination, the improvement of the Hawks was striking. Laurier’s defence held the seventh-ranked team in the nation to only 25 points-- nearly 27 points below their season average. Chris Ackie and Dillon Campbell were named CIS first team All-Canadians, OUA first team AllStars, and Campbell was recognized as the OUA’s MVP. Tommy Griffiths and Ronnie Pfeffer were recognized as OUA second team All-Stars, and Pfeffer was also named a CIS second team All-Canadian. Benjamin Millar and Ese Mrabure-Ajufo were honoured as OUA second team AllStars, while Godfrey Onyeka and Carson Ouellette were honoured as OUA AllRookies. The Golden Hawks cheerleading team is seen often on the sidelines of games, but in their own sport these athletes set a high bar on centre stage. Once again the Hawks earned the title of All-Girl National Champions, and this year the Hawks added a sportsmanship award for their spirit at the Jamfest Nationals following an outstanding performance as the lone team in the all-girls division that recorded a score only topped by one other team in the Co-Ed division. To top off an outstanding season, Laurier’s own Mackenzie Harris was named to the Team Canada cheer squad to compete in the ICU World Cheerleading Championships.

On the rink, the women’s hockey team skated to a couple of wins and a strong start following up an OUA gold last season. The rest of the season was sprinkled with tough matchups however, and the purple and gold team saw their regular season dip to 13-7-4. Despite a tough regular season, the Hawks went into playoffs with familiar fervor, The women’s basketball team soared to easily one of the and rocked the OUA Quarter-final round best seasons in program history, but were not able to by sweeping the higher-seeded Queen’s Gaels. The men’s hockey team had a back-andforth season as they struggled to improve on last season’s record. The Hawks saw some success late in the season with a three-game win streak that helped top last season’s record as they finished the year 10-16-1. But without being able to add an aditional victory, the Hawks were denied a playoff spot. Centre Zach Lorentz shone in his first year with the Hawks. The Waterloo, Ont., native notched nine goals, 18 assists, and was named to the OUA West Division All-Rookie Team. Back on the court, the men’s basketball team put a strong step forward to start the season but could not keep the winning momentum consistent throughout the remainder of the season, ending it with a 7-13 record. The season was counted as a success as the Hawks entered playoffs as 11th seed and will have a strong core of the team returning next season. One of the highlighting successes for the squad was the 90-82 upset victory over the Western Mustangs in the first round of OUA playoffs. The Hawks moved on to an OUA Quarter-final matchup against the Ryerson Rams where the season ended for the Hawks. Fourth year guard Will Coulthard was the only Hawk to earned OUA second team All-Star status, and first year forward

After going almost undefeated in regular season, the women’s soccer team fell one win short of the CIS Championships in 2014-15.

Luke Allin was named to both the CIS and OUA All-Rookie teams. The women’s lacrosse team started out strong and looked promising to repeat last year’s successful season-- which ended in an OUA bronze. By the end of regular season the Golden Hawks were 9-5-1 overall and ranked third in the OUA West. An OUA Quarter-final loss to a muchimproved UOIT team put Laurier out of the medal round and the purple and gold team settled for fifth place following two consolation semifinal wins. Defenceman Maddy Curtis was honoured as an OUA first team All-Star, while her teammates Torey Barfoot, Sarah Hatch, and Shelby O’Ryan were all honoured as OUA second team All-Stars.

On the pitch, the men’s soccer team had a slow start but found their stride in the later half of the season, notching a couple more wins to put together a 5-8-3 season record before playoffs began. The Golden Hawks then faced the Guelph Gryphons in the first round and, for the second consecutive year, claimed an extra-time victory. The nailbiting 3-2 win led the Hawks to Quarterfinals where their season ended at the hands of the York Lions in a 2-0 loss. Third year forward Anastasios Sitaridis was named the 2014 MVP for men’s soccer. Kate Vanderbeek headlined for the Golden Hawk swim program this year. The second year athlete continued her strong performance in the pool from last season, helping her team earn 24 medals at the OUA Tihanyi Divisionals. She went on to lead the Golden Hawks at the OUA Championships, just missing the podium as she placed 4th in the 50m backstroke and 5th in the 200m backstroke. To wrap up the season, Vanderbeek competed at the CIS Swimming Championships where she placed 15th in both the 50m and 200m backstroke. Osei is the Outstanding Woman of Laurier

Lee Anna Osei, a fifth year guard with the women’s basketball team, was honoured as the 2015 Outstanding Women of Laurier award recipient.

The two-time CIS Academic AllCanadian concluded her career this season by being named an OUA Second Team AllStar and also captured the OUA nomination for the Joy Bellinger Award, presented to the student-athlete who excels in academics, athletics, and community service.

Osei, a native of Toronto, was one of three nominees for this year’s award which included teammate Sam Jacobs of Enniskillen, Ont., and women’s soccer forward Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont. “Lee Anna embodies everything that this award represents,” said Peter Baxter, Laurier’s director of Athletics and Recreation. “Over the course of her three years with the Golden Hawks, she has excelled on the court, in the classroom and in the community and is a very deserving recipient of this honour.” Osei, a fifth year history major, became the second consecutive women’s basketball player to receive the award and the third overall since its inception in 2006. Former teammate Bree Chaput took home last year’s award while Jillian Ritsma won the honour back in 2007.

“I’m ecstatic,” said Osei who received her award in front of 330 people, the largest crowd to attend the event since 2008. “It still really hasn’t hit me yet...This is something I’m going to remember for the rest of my life, and something I’m going to take with me moving forward in life.” In just three seasons with the purple and gold, Osei set the team record for most assists in a season with 98 in 2013 and finished her career with 217 assists, the third most in school history.

A coach for the past eight years at various levels, Osei has worked with youth at all ages and skill levels, including coaching and training current NBA players Andrew Wiggins and Nik Stauskas. She also created the website “Get Recruited Canada”, an outlet whose sole purpose was to promote and endorse female athletes across Ontario and Canada. The event included an inspirational keynote address from Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue, the 2010 Olympic Gold Medalists and the 2014 Olympic Silver Medalists in Ice Dance. The event was hosted by Susan Cook-Scheerer, Host and Associate Producer of Waterloo Region’s favourite talk show, daytime on Rogers TV.

Two Hawks picked in 1st Round of CFL Draft Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks teammates Chris Ackie and Ese Mrabure-Ajufo made team history when they became the first two Golden Hawks to be selected in the opening round of the CFL Draft since Evald Timusk and Barry Jamieson were chosen in the first round back in 1970. Ackie (Cambridge, Ont.) and MrabureAjufo (Mississauga, Ont.) were selected fourth and fifth respectively by the Montreal Alouettes and the B.C. Lions. They become the 12th and 13th Golden Hawks to ever hear their name called in the opening round of the CFL Draft and the first since Shamawd Chambers was selected sixth overall by the Edmonton Eskimos back in 2012. “We knew Chris was going to go in the first round but we were ecstatic when he went fourth to Montreal,” commented Laurier head coach Michael Faulds. “There was a loud eruption of cheers at Wilf’s, and before we knew it, there was Ese being called at number five and a greater eruption came from the crowd.” “To have the only two players selected from the OUA in the opening round of

10

the draft says a lot about the direction of our program,” added Faulds. “We couldn’t be more excited for both Chris and Ese as they begin their professional careers.” Asides from being the first Hawk selected on Tuesday, Ackie, a CIS First Team All-Canadian in 2014, becomes the highest-selected Golden Hawk since Tom Walker also went fourth back in the 1972 draft. He was also the first defensive player chosen in the 2015

draft after three offensive linemen went with the first three picks of the night. Shortly after Ackie and Mrabure-Ajufo were selected, Hawks running back Dillon Campbell of Whitby, Ont., was picked in the fifth round, 39th overall by the Toronto Argonauts. Campbell, a CIS First Team All-Canadian last year and the leading rusher in the country, gives Laurier three picks in the draft, the most since four were chosen back in 2004.

Two former Hawks named to Canada’s baseball team Two former members of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team will be suiting up for Team Canada’s women’s baseball team as the sport makes its debut at the 2015 Pan American Games in July. Ashley Stephenson of Mississauga, Ont., and Kate Psota of Burlington, Ont., both defencemen during their time at Laurier, will represent the red and white at the competition being hosted in Ajax, Ont. Stephenson, who plays third base, and Psota, who plays first base, have been key figures with the national women’s baseball program since it was formed back in 2004. Both players have competed in all six International Baseball Federation (IBAF) Women’s Baseball World Cups, winning one silver and three bronze medals. “It is an honour to be selected to represent Canada at the Pan Am Games,” commented Stephenson on her selection. “With women’s baseball being included on the Pan Am Games sport program for the first time, I feel privileged to be part of this historic event in our sport. Putting on the Canadian jersey in Ajax in July will be a dream come true and we look forward to

putting on a great show for our fans and supporters.” Both Stephenson and Psota enjoyed highly-successful careers while at Laurier. Psota was a five-time OUA Champion between 2005-06 and 2009-10, while Stephenson was a member of the Golden Hawks’ 2005 CIS Championship squad and also won four OUA titles during her five year career (2001-02 to 2005-06). Stephenson also won multiple awards during her career with the purple and gold and was subsequently inducted into the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame in 2011.

Three Hawks head to the East West Bowl Three members of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team headed to Montreal in May to participate in the 13th annual East West Bowl, presented by Under Armour. Quarterback James Fracas of Waterloo, Ont., receiver Greg Nyhof of Georgetown, Ont., and linebacker Anthony Petrucci of Sarnia, Ont., suited up for the West as they hoped to catch the eyes of the CFL scouts before draft season came around in 2015. Fracas was one of just four quarterbacks at the event and he aimed to build off his first full season as Laurier’s starting pivot. Last year, the graduate of Sir John A. Macdonald threw for 1,574 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 272 yards on 44 attempts. His 62.3 completion percentage placed him in the Top 10 in the country. Nyhof, who originally came to the purple and gold as a quarterback but switched to receiver following his first year with the team, has been one of Fracas’ top targets over the past two seasons. Despite missing three games due to injury a year ago, the big slotback had 15 catches for 265 yards and tied for

the team-lead in receiving touchdowns with five. As for Petrucci, the SAM linebacker came off a breakout season that saw him finish fourth on the team in total tackles with 33 after recording 25 solo and 16 assisted tackles. His three pass breakups were also tied for second on the Hawks. Since the East West Bowl games inception back in 2003, Laurier has sent 46 players to the event including three players each of the last four years.

Brooker earns silver at 2015 Winter Universiade Laura Brooker, a fifth year forward with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team, was chosen as Canada’s captain for the 2015 Winter Universiade Games in Granada, Spain. A left winger in her fifth year of eligibility with the defending OUA champion Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks, Brooker was looking to capture her second Universiade gold medal after she racked up 10 points (7-3-10) in seven games in 2013 in Trentino, including a goal and an assist in a 5-0 championship win over Russia. Team Canada won a decisive 7-1 victory over Kazakhstan during the first women’s hockey game of the Winter Universiade at the Mulhacen Pavilion. Brooker notched two assists in the game, including one on the game-winning goal. Canada took a 5-2 win over Japan in the first semi-final to send the Red and White to their fourth straight Universiade gold medal game. The three-time defending champions would go on to face Russia in a rematch of the Pool B finale where Russia prevailed 3-1 to hand Canada its first-ever Universiade loss in women’s hockey. Russia defeated Canada 3-0 in the final, ending the Canadians’ consecutive FISU championship streak in the sport at three. Despite the heartbreaking loss, the medal was the first that Canada captured at the games. Canada struggled against the powerhouse Russian team that featured eight Olympians. Although the Red and White

outshot its competition 40-34, and earned nine power-play opportunities, they could not solve Russian goalie Yulia Leksina. After a tense opening period, Russia scored the only goal it needed at 2:16 of the second when Anna Shokhina, who played on Russia’s 2014 Olympic team, skated hard to the corner of the Canadian net, freezing University of Montreal goalie Élodie Rousseau-Sirois on the post, and then going around the net for the wrap-around goal. One of Canada’s best chances came as the game was winding down courtesy of the Golden Hawks captain. Brooker raced in on a shorthanded breakaway late in the final frame, but was hauled down just as her shot was saved. With the win, Russia becomes the first team other than Canada to capture the FISU gold medal, after Canadian teams triumphed in the three previous tournaments since the sport made its debut in 2009. The Russians also exacted a measure of revenge after losing to the Canucks 5-0 in the gold medal final in Trentino, Italy, in 2013.

Squires leads team to Ontario men’s curling championship Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s curling skip Aaron Squires of St. Thomas, Ont., and his club team qualified for the Ontario Tankard provincial championships this season thanks to one particularly impressive victory. Squires, whose team consisted of two members of Laurier’s varsity team, Spencer Nuttall of Toronto, Ont., and Fraser Reid of Ancaster, Ont., as well as former Golden Hawk Matt Mapletoft of Wallaceburg, Ont., defeated four-time World Champion Glenn Howard en route to reaching the provincial championship out of Region 3. After dropping down to the ‘B’ side of qualification with a loss in their first match, Squires and his rink won four straight games, including a commanding 8-4 victory over Howard. Still needing one more win to reach the Ontario Tankard finals, Squires knocked off Damien Villard 8-6 to reach his first provincial championship. Team Squires had a respectable showing in their first-ever appearance at the Ontario Tankard and finished ninth at the 2015

event. Over the course of 10 draws, Team Squires posted a 3-7 record. Included in their record were victories over Team Frans (4-6), Team St. Denis (3-7) and Team Heggestad (1-9).

The two scores total to give Laurier 249.8 points, more than enough to hold off the Guelph Gryphons and Western Mustangs to capture the championship. The Gryphons finished second at the event with a total score of 226.1 while Western finished third at 214.8. Overall, in the four different competitions at PCA Nationals on Saturday, the lone team Laurier did not post a better score than was Western’s Large Co-Ed team, who had the best overall score at 268.
