Fall 2000

Hawks ready to fly higher By Paul Caporicci Sports Information Director With a final season CIAU ranking of number 6 and a solid core of returning players, everyone in the Golden Hawk Football family is anxiously awaiting the upcoming campaign. Combined with a strong recruiting class, the Hawks have their sights on capturing the Yates Cup for 2000. But this goal does not come overnight. The first stop on the road was winter workouts. Sixtyseven players got together at 7:00 in the morning twice a week for agility practices. They were also responsible for continuing with a four-day per week strength workout. At the end of the twelve-week program, testing took place. Thirteen players made the 1000 lbs club (addition of bench, squat, and power clean). Twenty-two players made the 300 lbs club for bench press. Fullback Jon Low led the team, scoring an astronomical total of 1358 lbs. The next week was spring camp. These same sixty-seven players participated in ten full practices. The team emphasis was on execution of existing plays. The camp ended with a highly competitive Purple and Gold scrimmage to evaluate all players on the roster and gain a sense of the returning squad. This unit would have some help though. 1999-2000 proved to be one of Laurier's greatest recruiting efforts ever. The full-

time coaching staff personally visited over 120 high schools and evaluated over 450 players. This database of athletes was narrowed down to their top fifty choices. Of those players, thirty-eight have committed to wearing the purple and gold next year. The coaches feel that this year's class will provide the foundation for future championship teams at Laurier. The 2000 Golden Hawks received even more assistance when fate entered the arena. Five Hawks went to CFL tryouts and four returned--not due to their ability, but of their situations. Rob Vickers went to a team that already had six veteran linemen. Kojo Millington battled through injuries the entire camp. Eric Schwab went to a team that moved him from defensive end to fullback. One of Laurier's greatest defensive backs, Donnie Ruiz broke his

clavicle in the second exhibition game in Winnipeg. These four returnees bring vast leadership and experience to the team. Harvey Stables did stick with Montreal, much due to his special teams finesse. This path leads us to the present moment. Here’s a look at the numbers: 3 First-Team All-Canadians, 12 Conference All-Stars, and 21 out of 26 starters are returning for the 2000 season. With less than a month away from fall training camp, everyone associated with the program is tingling with anticipation. The Hawks hope to harness a tremendous amount of momentum generated within the program as they set out to win a league championship…

The Momentum is Growing

By Tom Allen President of 5th Quarter Club

In this edition of our newsletter you will read about some great achievements and successes that have occurred in the past eight months in relation to the Golden Hawk Football Program. From recruiting to the Corporate Dinner, it is evident that football is beginning to return to the prominence of years gone by. Last year was the beginning of what I believe will be the strongest supporting alumni in the CIAU. Our membership in the 5th Quarter Club is

increasing monthly and for those of you who haven't joined, I encourage you to do so. Entry level membership starts at $20/month or $200 lump sump. Become a member of the 5th Quarter Club and help make a difference. Besides your financial commitment, we would also like to see you at the games. Laurier has some very formidable opponents this year especially McMaster on September 23rd and Western at Homecoming on September 30th. The camaraderie at the pre- and post-game receptions

is wonderful and I encourage all of you to become part of it. Tom Allen ‘68

Hawk Football Memories

By Rich Newbrough former WLU Head Coach The 1972 ATLANTIC BOWL played in Halifax pitted the OUAA Champion Golden Hawks against the Huskies of Saint Mary's. Upon arrival in Halifax the Hawks were not too well received because in a pre-season game, the Huskies had prevailed and the local community had their hearts set on facing the Mustangs of Western. There was media taunting about the triple option and the wishbone offense the Hawks were pioneering but it did not take very long to convince the overflow crowd that since the pre-season game, the Golden Hawks were a much different team. On the very first offensive play of the game, quarterback WAYNE ALLISON ran the tri-

At the start of Fred McLean, he kept the ball the game, I assumed my posiand scampered over 50 yards tion as a spotter in the press for a touchdown. Allison promptly went Laurier football, and back to the right side, again I was there! pitched to Passmore who ran into the end zone untouched. Amazing!! Four offensive plays and four touchdowns. The Hawks went on to humiliate the Huskies by a score of 50-17. Allison was named game's MVP and Passmore was voted the game ball by the players for his three touchdown performance. In that era the Hawks used goal setting as a vital part of game preparations. Individual, unit and team goals were David “Tuffy” Knight established prior to former WLU Head Coach game time. Some

Message from Head Coach

Dear Friends of Golden Hawk Football: Allow me to take this opportu-

nity to thank all of you for your support in our efforts to achieve success. The Golden Hawks closed out a decade which saw our team reach four Yates Cup Finals while capturing our first National Championship in 1991. During this period, over 70 Hawks achieved OUA AllStar status while 22 were named CIAU All-Canadians. 1999 proved to be another successful and exciting season for all of those associated with our program. I am personally very proud of our team with their effort and dedication in

carrying the winning tradition of this University into this century. This coming season will once again provide new challenges in our quest to capture the Yates Cup. The strong nucleus returning combined with a stellar crop of rookies should allow us an opportunity to obtain our goal of becoming champions. See you this fall,

Nominations needed

The Laurier Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1986 as part of a campus-wide celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the University. Most athletic teams in that year wore special patches or decals on equipment signifying the anniversary year and it was decided then to pay special tribute to those who achieved a high level of success during their playing days. Thirteen athletes and one builder were inducted during the initial ceremony and the evening lasted until well past 11pm. As we get ready for our 15th Induction Ceremony, we can say that this celebration has become one of the highlights of Homecoming weekend. An on-campus committee conducts the selection process after receiving nominations from within the University community but lately, there have not been enough nominations for them to consider. The criteria for nomination is threefold: a. must have participated for at least three years b. a lapse of 5 years since last participation c. athletic performance recognized at national or provincial levels Over 32 football players and three teams have been inducted so far but nominations for football have slackened in recent years. Perhaps YOU would like to nominate a player, builder or team this year. All you need to do is send a brief resume of the nominee's background that includes individual and team records. You can also visit the website to fill out a nomination form. You might include other items such as leadership (team captain), citizenship, campus activities (clubs/residence) and academic awards. If statistics are not available, the committee will search the archives; if you can get another alumnus or two to second the nomination, so much the better. The Selection Committee usually starts deliberations in April and finish by the end of June. You can send the nomination to Mr. Wayne Gowing, c/o of Laurier Athletics. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2001 Hall of Fame Ceremony. This event has become so large that it is scheduled off campus to accommodate the large audience - last year we had over 200 in attendance. It will always be held on the Friday evening prior to Homecoming Saturday and you can obtain tickets by phoning (519) 884-1970 ext. 2184

Alumni Day Wednesday, August 30 is Alumni Day during training camp. All Golden Hawk football alumni are invited to come and watch the afternoon practice. Practice runs from 4:00 6:00 p.m. and will culminate with a scrimmage. After practice you are invited to stay and enjoy dinner with the team. If you plan on attending, please leave Coach Gabler a message at (519) 884-0710 ext. 3428

2000 Hall of Fame Inductee Paul Nastasiak, the 1983 CIAU Rookie of the Year is the only football inductee to the Hall of Fame this year. The 15th Annual Hall of Fame ceremony will take place on Friday, September 29 at the Walper Terrace Hotel in Kitchener. The reception starts at 6:00 p.m. with dinner at 7:00 p.m. and the induction ceremony will follow dinner. Paul was a two time OUAA All-Star and 1986 first round draft choice of the BC Lions. All former teammates and friends are encouraged to come back and celebrate Paul’s induction. There is limited seat so to reserve your tickets please call (519) 884-0710 ext. 2184.

Corporate Tents Four corporate tents are available to be rented at each Golden Hawk home football game. There is limited availability. Cost is $1,500 which includes food, drinks, and game tickets for 24 people. For more information contact Roly Webster at (519) 884-0710 ext. 3289 or email rwebster@wlu.ca.

First Annual Friends of Golden Hawk Football Reception and Dinner

university community as a direct link in the creation of tomorrow's business and community leaders. With representation from over 50 companies at 36 corporate tables, there is little doubt that those in attendance disagreed with Mr. Wadsworth's message. The evening had a distinctive football flavour as attendees included past Golden Hawk Head Football Coaches, Rich Newbrough and Dave "Tuffy" Knight, current CFL receivers and WLU alumni Corey Grant (Hamilton) and Stefan Ptaszek (Toronto) and past CFL players Stacey Coray, Paul Markle, Granville Liggins, Wally Gabler Sr., Neil Lumsden, Tom Beynon, John Glassford, Gerry Sternberg, Alex Troop, Jim Reid and Peter Martin who also served as Master of Ceremonies. Other notable attendees were former Senior PGA Tour member Gary Cowan and former NHL player Steve Rice. The event was a huge success and will form one of the cornerstones for Golden Hawk Football for years to come. In total over $12,000.00 was raised for the football program and this year's monies were used to purchase 36 pairs of Douglas shoulder pads. Next year's

Varsity Stars 2000

From May 2nd to 7th the CFL and Edmonton Eskimos hosted 97 second, third, and fourthyear CIAU players for a week-long training and practice session, culminating in an allstar game on May 6th at the University of Alberta's Varsity Stadium. All 24 CIAU teams were represented as the West (Canada West-OQIFC) All-stars took on the East (AUAA-OUA) All-stars. Four Hawks represented Wilfrid Laurier University. First-Team All-Canadian Andre Talbot held the wide receiver position. James Hitchen played right guard. Kevin Johnson contained the opposing receivers at the defensive corner position. Rounding out the crew, Kevin Taylor played free-safety.

Four Wilfrid Laurier University football players were selected in the 2000 Canadian College Draft. Kojo Millington was selected in the fourth round, 26th overall by the Toronto Argonauts, and Harvey Stables was next up going to the Montreal Alouettes 27th overall. Then in the fifth round two more Hawks went back to back with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers selecting Eric Schwab with the 32nd pick and the Edmonton Eskimos selecting Rob Vickers with the 33rd pick in the draft.

The event is the first of its kind, and was a great opportunity for CFL coaches to take notes on the next crop of potential CFLers. It also gave the CIAU student-athletes a chance to meet players from across the country, while being a good measuring stick for their own professional aspirations. "Most of these athletes are pretty well-

tuned", said Edmonton Eskimos GM Tom Higgins who was overseeing practice at Edmonton Garrison. "They're very good at what they do, but is there something that can maybe help them and take them to a whole different level?" The game itself was on a cold and blustery afternoon, at a rain-soaked University of Alberta Varsity Stadium. St. Francis Xavier University's Chris Costello grabbed a 6-yard touchdown pass with just 21 seconds remaining, which lifted the East squad to a 12-11 victory in the inaugural 'Canadian Football Varsity Stars’ All-Star Game.

Eric Schwab - DL * Led the team with 8 sacks, third on the team for tackles with 66 (43 solo, 23 assisted), 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovered * Named Second Team OUA All-Star Rob Vickers - OL * Named Second Team OUA All-Star Harvey Stables - IR * Led the team in receiving yards per catch with 22.2 yds and was second on the team with 5 TD's and 400 yards

Ruiz Returns to the Golden Hawks

By Paul Caporicci Sports Information Director

Fate has a strange way of interfering with life. Defensive-back Donnie Ruiz was well on his way to making the active roster and competing for a starting spot for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He played the entire second half of the first exhibition game versus the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. During the second and final exhibition game versus the Toronto Argonauts with less than ten minutes to play, Ruiz made a routine tackle but hit his opponent awkwardly. It wasn't until after the game and the trainer looked at his shoulder when Donnie received the bad news; he had broken his clavicle. With at least a sixweek recovery time they felt it was best that he return to Laurier to play his final year of eligibility. Ruiz explained, "I left Winnipeg with the coaches telling me they were pleased with my athleticism and ability to play the game. I learned a great deal technically and

improved daily during camp. The coaches want me to bring these skills that I've learned back to Laurier and take on receivers in the CIAU." Ruiz returned to Canada after a brief stint at Bemidji State in Minnesota where he played running back. In his first year at Laurier, he only played three games due to transfer rules. In both of his next two seasons he was honoured as a First-Team AllCanadian. Two years ago he led the CIAU in interceptions with 7 and broke the Golden Hawk regular season record. Last year he led the team and the conference with 97 total tackles and received the award for Best Defensive Player in the OUA. The possibilities are endless for his fifth and final year. "I believe this gives me the opportunity to improve my leadership skills. Last year, I

didn't fully develop this (leadership) and it gives me a second chance", Ruiz hopes. "Last year's team had one element missing which was experience. We now have that experience coming back which increases our opportunity to surpass last year's outcome." The return of Ruiz was not what Laurier's coaching staff was expecting. Head Coach Rick Zmich had scratched Ruiz from the depth chart at the end of last year’s season. When asked about Donnie's situation, Zmich commented, "Ruiz is undoubtedly CFL caliber. Returning for his final season of eligibility solidifies our (defensive) secondary. He brings not only athleticism, but tremendous leadership to the table." In an ideal world, Ruiz should be in Winnipeg right now getting ready for their next game. However fate decided to return Donnie to Laurier for one final year; but for what purpose? "That's obvious, to win a Vanier Cup", Ruiz replied.
