Volume 6, Issue 1 Corporate Dinner Another Success!

The third annual Friends of Golden Hawk Football Reception and Dinner was once again a great success. This year’s event surpassed others in funds with approximately $42,000 raised through the dinner and auction. All proceeds will go towards enhancing the Golden Hawk Football program. The evening took place on May 2nd at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in downtown Kitchener and was hosted by CH TV personality Ken Welch. The audience was entertained and inspired by key note speaker, Pinball Clemmons. His speech delivered a motivational message regarding the importance of the 4 P’s including persistence, patience, passion and people. The goal of the evening was to bring the corporate world, alumni and friends together in the promotion of the Golden Hawk Football program. The Athletic Department would like to thank all of those who attended and generously donated to support the program. Stay tuned for information on the fourth annual Friends of Golden Hawk Football Reception and Dinner.

Fall 2002

Gearing Up For Game Time By Paul Caporicci Upon asking anyone in the Laurier organization about last season’s 3-5 record, they will tell you it was misleading. The Hawks competed in every game they played, including two close ones against the eventual Yates Cup finalists McMaster and Ottawa. As last season’s baptism by fire was finally over, it is interesting to see what the fire burnt off and what remains. A closer examination reveals the same tenacious defense as last season, which is a controlled aggressive system based around mental and physical toughness. This year’s offense will be much more polished and refined featuring a multi-pronged attack philosophy. While last season Zmich had to wave goodbye to twelve of their starters, this season he only had to part with three. He will also say hello again to Chad MacAvelia, a 2000 OUA All-Star receiver sidelined all of last season with a shoulder injury. Winter workouts were built on last year’s successful model, which consisted of two agility practices and a four-day strength training program each week. Zmich will tell you that championships are built during the off-season and the fiftyeight players who remain will be a testament to that statement. The winter workouts

Hard work, sweat and determination is the theme of the summer with the Hawks preparing for a winning season! ended with spring camp, which culminated with a purple-gold scrimmage. It was good that the attendance at the game was low, because there are going to be many surprises for Golden Hawk fans this year. Certain players have made such significant off-season gains that they vaulted themselves into starting positions. This secret along with others will be revealed in September. While winter workouts and spring camp were going on, the coaching staff were busy hosting over one hundred formal visits for recruits. These prospective students were able to meet and ask questions with Dr. Rosehart (University President), David McMurray (Dean of Students) and Peter Baxter (Director of Athletics). While

Zmich may not have been as vocal as other schools in broadcasting his commitments, he assures that this year is another great recruiting class with some immediate impact players. The Laurier football program is now less than a month away from kickoff. Fall training camp is the only thing that stands in the way of the 2002 campaign. Do the Hawks have what it takes to compete in the most difficult conference in Canada? This author thinks so. Do the Hawks have what it takes to emerge victorious in the most difficult conference in Canada? Well, you’ll have to see that for yourself. Opening game is on the evening of Labour Day when they face the Waterloo Warriors. I’m going to be there; are you?

2002 All-Canadian Football Camp & Jamboree The 5th annual All-Canadian Football Camp was held at University Stadium this summer on June 27 - 30. 90 high school football players, ages 13-19 traveled to Waterloo to participate in one of the best teaching camps in the country. This four day camp included testing the 40 yard dash, pro agility, extensive skill development, player report cards, film study, daily touch football games, nutrition and weight training sessions, swim periods and on-site therapy. The coaching staff included the Laurier’s own staff, Chris Triantafilou (Head Coach, Waterloo), Tom Gretes (Head Coach,York), Mario Starino (Offensive Coordinator, Toronto), Pat Tracey (Defensive Coordinator, Queens), Ted Goveia (Assistant Coach, McMaster), Barry Pyear (Head Coach, Belleville Centennial H.S.), Michael Cameron (Head Coach, St. Andrews College) and Clark Eady (Head Coach, St. Mary’s H.S.). Laurier Football hosted the first annual Golden Hawk Minor Football Jamboree on Saturday July 13. 81 players with ages ranging from 7 to 14 years participated in 2 practices at University Stadium at Wilfrid Laurier University. Laurier’s coaching staff and many of their current players including OUA All-Stars Kevin MacNeill (LB), Jeff Melis (OL) and Chad MacAvelia (REC) focused on fundamentals and skill development during the noncontact camp. The players were introduced to each position in the morning during a positional circuit and then focused on the position of their choice during the afternoon session. Head Coach Rick Zmich addressed the group and was very excited about the partnership that has been created with local organizations such as Twin Cities, Guelph and Cambridge Minor Football.

Coach’s Corner

Dear Friends of Golden Hawk Football:

As we enter the 2002 season, there is an air of optimism surrounding our program. The coaches and players have been working hard in all facets pertaining to Golden Hawk Football. Last year’s youthful squad steadily improved culminating in a heart breaking last second playoff loss in Kingston. The Hawks have not remained idle this past off season. In fact, I believe that we have outworked our opponents in the weight room, winter practice sessions, classroom and commitment to community service. University Football requires a 12 month commitment by all associated with our program. Our athletes have access to academic advisors, strength training consultation and high level speed and conditioning coaching. This summer has continued with a strong commitment from our coaches and players.

Almost 40 players stayed in Waterloo to commit themselves to being stronger and faster this fall. The coaches have been busy identifying recruits for 2003! We expect to have in excess of 300 student-athletes in our data-base by August 20, 2002. I strongly believe that this hard work will pay dividends in 2002. The winter workout sessions at RIM Park, study halls/ tutors, strength training and recruiting efforts would not be possible without your generosity and support. On behalf of all associated with the Golden Hawk Football program, allow me to take this opportunity to thank you for your loyalty and commitment to the Hawk program. See you this fall,

Athletic Alumni Message

Being apart of the Golden Hawk Football program is an accomplishment offering many internal rewards. Qualities such as hard work ethics, discipline, determination, and confidence are only some that are gained through one's commitment and dedication to the team. As current Golden Hawks are working hard in preparation for the 2002 season, you have the opportunity to assist them in their endeavours. Many opportunities exist allowing you to give back to the present football generation. We invite all alumni to play a role in the studentathlete experience by “adopting” an athlete. The Adopt-A-Golden Hawk program was initiated last year and presently has over 40 football players adopted. Our goal for this year is to have all football players adopted through the program. For only $25.00/month or $300/year, you can make an immediate impact on the student athlete experience. Financial support is not the only method of giving back to the Golden Hawk program. Vol-

unteers are always needed to assist in various athletic events including our Friends of Football Reception and Dinner, Hall of Fame Dinner Committee and 5th Quarter Club Members. We invite all alumni to participate in the Homecoming weekend, beginning Friday September 20th with the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner. Football inductees to the 2002 Hall of Fame include Wally Parker (‘73) and Brian Breckles (‘89). Come cheer for the Hawks as they kick off against the University of Toronto on Saturday September 21st at University Stadium, 2:00 pm See you at the games! Roly Webster rwebster@wlu.ca

Adopt A Golden Hawk Program The Golden Hawks invite everyone to play a role in the student-athlete experience by "adopting" an athlete. The Adopt-A-Golden Hawk program is more than a fundraiser; it is an opportunity for the community, alumni and corporate sector to support a specific team, while at the same time becoming involved with a specific student-athlete. Last year marked the first season of the program with the successful adoption of over 40 Golden Hawk athletes. Any contribution will help enhance the student-athlete experience and assist them in achieving their academic and athletic success. For more information on participating in the Adopt-A-Golden Hawk program please contact Roland Webster at rwebster@wlu.ca

Hawks Continue to Provide Leadership in the Community By Rick Zmich The Golden Hawks have a rich and storied history in University Football in Canada. Having won a National Championship, numerous League titles, graduated countless League All Stars and All-Canadians, WLU is certainly known and respected on the field of play. Coupled with challenging academic expectations, Laurier’s football players truly epitomize the consummate student-athlete. Add to this, the dedication and commitment that the Hawks show toward our community and it is easy to see why business student Josh Alexander was the 2001 recipient of the TSN Russ Jackson Award,
