GOLDEN HAWK NEWSLETTER

“Building Champions, Building Traditions”

Volume 8, Issue 1 Message from Dr. Bob Rosehart Golden Hawk Athletics has long been part of the proud heritage of Wilfrid Laurier U n i v e r s i t y. Whether you are participating as an athlete, a supporting student, alumnus or friend, your contribution to the success of our programs over the years has been much valued and appreciated. At Laurier, we believe that learning goes beyond the lecture hall and involvement in Golden Hawk athletics is a valuable leadership experience that serves our student athletes throughout their lifetime. A new spirit of enthusiasm and renewal in Golden Hawks athletics has evolved at Laurier and this could not have been done without your participation and support. In recent seasons we have seen Laurier victorious at the Vanier Cup, repeatedly winning the OUA Women’s Hockey and Field Lacrosse Championships and this past season our Men’s Hockey team was in one of the national semi-final games in Moncton, N.B. We continue to invest in new fitness equipment, renewed physical facilities and have placed a considerable emphasis on the recruitment of exceptional coaches along with high quality student athletes with both outstanding academic and athletic credentials. continued on back page...

Fall 2007

Two Banners Added in 2006-07 Season

The Women’s Hockey team captured the OUA title for the ir sixth time in the past nine years.

As facility improvements take shape to showcase the Golden Hawk varsity teams next season, we look back at the 2006-2007 year in Laurier Athletics with a team-by-team year in review. OUA Coach of the Year for now the third time, Rick Osborne led the women’s hockey team to their fourth consecutive provincial championship title. Sporting five OUA allstars and the league’s most valuable player, Andrea Bevan, the Hawks dominated regular season play. The team traveled to London for the provincial finals where they played their semi-final game against Guelph (2-1) and final against Queen’s (5-1). With the OUA championship under their belts, the team set their sights on the CIS Nationals. The Hawks skated to an impressive victory in their first game, topping the host Gee Gees 5-0. However, Laurier was defeated in their next two games by Alberta and Manitoba, preventing them from capturing a CIS medal. An historic season for the men’s hockey team grew from an opening game loss into a campaign marked by lengthy undefeated streaks as the country’s second most potent offense carried the gritty team into the national spotlight. The team posted the best record in Laurier history at 22-5-1, placing them first overall in the OUA after a thrilling lateseason overtime victory against Waterloo. The confident team went 4-0 in their OUA playoff series, casting Lakehead and Waterloo aside to confront UQTR in the Queen’s Cup Championship game. A 5-3 loss to the Patriotes in front of a home crowd of over 1600 sent the Hawks to the national tournament as OUA silver medalists and seeded fourth in the country. In the hotly contested University

The Women’s Lacrosse team won their fourth consecutive OUA Gold Medal after their 9-1 season.

Cup, overtime was the order of the day with the Hawks first capturing a come-back victory over St Francis Xavier five minutes into double overtime. Laurier then jumped ahead of the tournament favourites from Moncton before late goals for the Aigles-Bleus led to an overtime departure for the Hawks. A 24-0 victory over York in week three of the 2006 men’s football campaign marked a turning point for the Golden Hawks. Capitalizing on their defensive strength, fielding league leaders in sacks and tackles in the backfield, the Hawks stormed back from a slow start and mounted a charge to the top of the OUA standings. Ending the regular season in second place at 6-2, the squad scored memorable victories over Western and McMaster along the way. Defeating the Mustangs 20-15 in the OUA Semi-Finals sent the Golden Hawks to Ottawa to challenge for the Yates Cup; the team’s fourth consecutive appearance in the provincial final. In a battle of the league’s top defenses it was the Ottawa offense that broke through in the second half, putting the game out of reach for the Hawks.

The Men’s Hockey team took the OUA Silver Medal and attended the Nationals for the second consecutive year.

2007 Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Inductees

2

The Golden Hawk tradition continues with the Induction Ceremony into the Wilfrid Laurier department of Athletics and Recreation Hall of Fame to take place on Homecoming Weekend 2007. Five athletes, the outgoing president of the university and the 1987 Yates Cup Championship team will make up the group to be inducted on September 21st in the Senate and Board Chamber at Wilfrid Laurier. The evening will be hosted by long time friend of the Golden Hawk program, Mike Hogan. Hogan, of the Fan 590 has been the voice of the Golden Hawk Football season through the last four seasons before returning to calling the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts this year. This year’s athlete inductees include Wojciech Cwik and Kenny Nutt (Men’s Soccer), Bill Madden and Kojo Millington (Football), and Paula Watson (Women’s Volleyball). Dr. Robert Rosehart will be inducted as a builder and the 1987 men’s football team will be added to the other 11 teams already in the hall of fame. Let’s take a look at this year’s inductees and their accomplishments in the purple-andgold. Wojciech Cwik was an integral part of the dominance of the Men’s Soccer team at the start the new millennium. Wojciech helped to control the middle of the field and was a key factor in back to back CIAU championships in 2000 and 2001. Wojciech’s play Wojiech Cwik earned him several individual awards though his three year tenure at Laurier. Included in these awards are a CIAU First Team All-Canadian selection, a Second Team All-Canadian selection as well as back to back OUA First Team All-Star awards. Here at Laurier Wojciech was recognized as his teams MVP on one occasion and took home the President’s Award as the university’s top male athlete in 2001/2002. Currently Wojciech continues to have an impact on the soccer program at Laurier as he serves as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams. Bill Madden was a key member of the Golden Hawks from 1986-1990. Playing as a defensive end Bill’s career here at Laurier was very impressive amassing several individual awards for his exceptional defensive ability. Highlighting Bill’s career was Bill Madden a 1st Team All-Canadian selection in 1989. Bill was also recognized twice as an OUAA All-Star. It was

no coincidence that all the teams Bill played on at Laurier were quite successful led by the 1987 squad which captured the coveted Yates Cup. Bill was a quiet leader who led by example and was also a very durable player having never missed a game due to injury in his storied career as a Golden Hawk. A testament to Bill’s leadership came in 1989 where he was named team captain by Coach Rich Newbrough and his coaching staff. That same year Bill was also named Laurier’s Outstanding Linesman. Kojo Millington’s career as a Golden Hawk was nothing short of extraordinary. Over his five years here at Laurier Kojo shaped himself into one of the best lineman in the history of the program. He received plenty of recognition for his dominating play including a First Team All- Kojo Millington Canadian selection in 1999, a Second Team All-Canadian selection in 2000, OUA First Team All-Star in both ’99 and ‘00 and in 1999 was also named OUA Top Linesman. In his last two seasons at Laurier, Kojo served as a team captain and was also voted by his team the Most Valuable Player in 1999. Kojo was the first Golden Hawk in history to represent Laurier in the East-West Shrine Bowl where he competed against the top football prospects in North America. His quick and powerful ability as well as his dedication to the game made Kojo a force to be reckoned with every time he entered onto the field. Kojo was a fourth round selection of the Toronto Argonauts in the 2000 CFL draft. Kenny Nutt came to the Golden Hawks in 1998 where his overwhelming skill and determination made an immediate impact on the field. By Kenny’s third year at Laurier he was widely received as the top player in the country. Kenny’s creativity on the Kenny Nutt pitch caught the attention of everyone who watched him play and this led to one of the most decorated careers in the history of Laurier Athletics. Over his five year playing career here at Laurier, Kenny was twice named CIAU MVP to go along with two First Team All-Canadian awards, a Second Team All-Canadian award, a three time OUA First Team All-Star, a team MVP, and he also received Laurier’s prestigious President’s Award as the school’s male athlete of the year. Even with many awards to his credit, Kenny’s contribution to the Men’s Soccer program was no more evident then in the 2000 and 2001 seasons where he helped his team to back to back CIAU Championships. In 2000 Kenny was also recognized as the CIAU championship MVP for his stellar performance at the championship tournament. Paula Watson came to Wilfrid Laurier in 1998 and became an impact player on the Women’s Volleyball team right from the start. Paula was a large factor in the growth and success in the women’s program. The success of the program reached an all-time high during the 2001/2002 season where Paula and

her teammates compiled an unprecedented 18-0 record during the regular season. Team success does not come without individual talent and Paula possessed just that. Her terrific play on the court did not go unnoticed during her stay as a Golden Hawk. In each of her four years she was Paula Watson recognized as an OUA AllStar, including a First Team All-Star award in 2000/2001. In her final year at Laurier, Paula also received the prestigious OUA Award of Merit which is presented to the women who best demonstrates an outstanding dedication and commitment to OUA volleyball. Dr. Robert Rosehart arrived at Laurier in 1997 becoming the school’s seventh president. Ten years later ‘Dr. Bob’ leaves Laurier as one of the single greatest contributors in the history of Laurier Athletics and Recreation. His vision and leadership has helped Laurier soar to new heights and with the infrastructure he has put in place, the future looks very bright. Dr. Rosehart understood the importance of athletics and the pride it brings to a university community. He also realized that in order to be the best, the proper facilities must be in place. It was this type of thinking that made him a champion of athletic facility renewal especially in regards to gender equity and women’s opportunities in sport and recreation. Over his tenure he was instrumental Dr. Robert Rosehart in completing many projects including the Athletic Complex renovation, the Athletic Complex Fitness Center, the building of Alumni Field, and the University Stadium renewal. Under Dr. Rosehart’s illustrious career at Laurier, Golden Hawk teams have compiled eighteen OUA titles and four National Championships. The 1987 edition of Golden Hawks Football has emerged as one of the greatest allaround football teams in the history of the program. In coach Rich Newbrough’s third year as head coach of the program he put together a perfect mix of talent, power and grit. This team was absolutely explosive on the offensive side of the ball, led by quarterback Rod Philp, who had a terrific supporting cast with All-Canadian receiver and league MVP Ken Evraire and receiver Joe Nastasiuk and Yates Cup MVP Luc Gerritsen. On the defensive side of the ball this team was ferocious and quick and forced the opposition into turnover after turnover. The defense was led by All-Canadian lineman Veron Stiliadis and linebacker Jon Graffi. After a 6-1 record in the regular season the Golden Hawks cruised to an OUAA Championship with consecutive victories over Windsor (32-13) and Guelph (28-15) to claim the Yates Cup. They then traveled to Vancouver to play the University of British Columbia (UBC) in the Western Bowl for a chance to play in the national championship game. The game saw seven different lead changes with UBC scoring the final touchdown of the game with just over continued on next page...

New Coaches Anticipate Upcoming Season

light at home, taking the Battle of Waterloo game by a score of 63-62 after erasing a nine point deficit with less than two minutes to play. The team’s hard-working core of rookies earned a lot of court time this season, putting the team in good position for growth next season. Coaching changes highlight the anticipation already gearing up for the 2007-2008 campaign. Changes at the helm paid dividends for the tennis team and the men’s hockey program this past season and hopes are riding high that the newest members of the Laurier head coaching contingent will continue that success. Scott Ballantyne will be managing the

baseball team for 2007, stepping up from assistant manager. As well, former assistant coach Luke Snider will be the man running the floor for the upcoming women’s volleyball season. Both men are former Golden Hawk athletes and have already played significant roles in shaping their respective programs. With two provincial championships to defend and countless chances for great performances ahead, we look forward to welcoming you at a Golden Hawk game.

one minute to play to seal the victory. The final score ended 33-31 in favour of UBC. The legacy of this team lives on in Golden Hawk history as one of the best to take the field. It produced 14 different OUAA All-Stars that year and three players were All-Canadian selections. Years later the team has had nine different players inducted into the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame. Since the inaugural induction in 1986, a total of 109 student-athletes, 15 builders and 12 teams have entered the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame. Recognizing Dedication to Athletics and Recreation Building the best university Athletics and Recreation program in Canada requires a team effort. Over the past 10 years Laurier Athletics and Recreation has undergone a metamorphosis unlike any program in Canada. A tired Athletic Complex was Peter Baxter modernized and renewed, a Fitness Centre, one of Canada’s largest, was built adjacent to the existing Athletic Complex to service Laurier’s expanding student population of 10,000 students. Alumni Field was built to service recreational users and provides a home for the WLU Soccer teams. This fall will see the opening of a newly renovated University Stadium which will provide expanded locker rooms, multi-use recreation facilities, a new gymnasium floor surface, running track and of course, a new artificial turf surface on the newly named Knight-Newbrough Field. The field honours Laurier’s legendary former

Athletic Directors and Head Football Coaches David “Tuffy” Knight and Rich Newbrough. Alumni, the Student Body both graduate and undergraduate, and the University came together to create this asset for our students. To realize these projects required a special leader within the University. During his tenure as WLU President, Dr. Bob Rosehart understood the educational value Athletics and Recreation has toward the mission of Wilfrid Laurier University. Since his tenure began, more gender equitable facilities have provided a greater amount of participant opportunities for students when compared to larger Universities. Laurier Intramural teams have grown annually from less than 200 teams to over 700. Instruction class participants have moved from 450 to over 3000. Personal fitness users in our Fitness Centre number over 2600 per day, over 16,000 users per week. And lastly, we have 23 Interuniversity sports teams, 11 men’s and 11 women’s, in addition to cheerleading. During Dr. Bob’s tenure Laurier teams have won 18

OUA and 4 CIS National Championships. Bob would be the first to say that nothing would have been accomplished without the unique partnership of our Students and support from our Alumni and friends. The Three Pillars of Support: Enhancement to programs, Capital Facilities Initiatives and Athletic Financial Awards for Student-Athletes are the foundation of our drive to be the best. We thank you for that support and encourage you to continue to maintain and grow Dr. Rosehart’s legacy to Laurier Athletics and Recreation. On behalf of all our Laurier Athletics family, I would like to thank Dr. Bob for his leadership and dedication to the Laurier Golden Hawks program. All the best for the upcoming year and we’ll see you at the games!

Basketball Player Wins Outstanding Women of Laurier Award

Jillian Ritsma has been named the 2007 Outstanding Woman of Laurier. The third-year kinesiology and physical education student, who balances a busy schedule of basketball, academics and community service, received the award during a luncheon at the Waterloo Inn & Conference Centre today. “ ‘We are what we repeatedly do,’ ” said Ritsma, quoting the philosopher Aristotle. “I am proud and honoured to be here today to represent the women who ‘are what they repeatedly do.’ ” “This luncheon today involves more than acknowledgement of our nominees,” she added. “This event is a chance for the community to take notice of Laurier’s female athletes and role models. Two of those joined Ritsma as finalists: Kimberley Coros, a fourth-year honours kinesiology and physical education student who is a student leader and events co-ordinator for both the men’s and women’s varsity basketball teams and the student trainer for Laurier’s women’s lacrosse program; and Laurissa Kenworthy, a fourthyear honours kinesiology and physical education student who has played on the four-time Ontario champion varsity women’s Ice Hockey team, and was chosen team captain this year. The event also honoured WLU alumna Kyra Kristensen-Irvine, a former Laurier Athletic Hall of Fame student athlete who was presented with the Alumni Founders Award. Kristensen-Irvine, now a principal at Rowntree Public School in Peel Region, was instrumental in paving the way for female athletics at Laurier. Through the event’s first two years, more than $100,000 has been raised for an endowment for the Outstanding Women of Laurier Award, which will begin granting awards to multiple female student athletes in 2008. This year’s event was hosted by Beverly Thomson, co-host of CTV’s Canada AM. Dr. Dana Sinclair, one of North America’s leading sport and performance psychologists delivered the keynote address.

The women’s lacrosse season began characteristically full-force as the talented squad showcased their offensive power in St. Catharine’s, winning matches against the Brock (13-8), Guelph (10-6) and Western (16-9). Despite suffering their first loss in two years at the hands Toronto, the Hawks finished their season in first place and earned the right to host the championship tournament. The Hawks first triumphed 11-8 over McGill in their semi-final game. Then, in a strongly contested, strategically played OUA final game, the Golden Hawks defeated their rivals from Queen’s 7-5 to repeat as OUA gold medalists for the fourth consecutive season. The women’s curling team had a successful season, beginning with a 3-0 showing at the East Sectional tournament. The Golden Hawks beat both Western and Trent on day one of the OUA Championships, qualifying them for the OUA Semi-Final against Western. The team won this game 8-4 and proceeded to the gold medal game against Waterloo. Eight ends of precise play by the Warriors landed the Hawks in the silver medal position, a two-place improvement from last year’s results. The men’s curling team began its season at the East Sectional tournament in Waterloo, playing to a 2-1 record. The team also saw success in the crossover at Queen’s, going 3-1. The defending champions headed into the OUA tournament as the top seed, but suffered an 0-3 opening day which halted their shot at the podium. The men’s baseball program continued to make strides this season, building on their first ever playoff appearance last season. The team went on a late season tear, winning seven of their last eight games, to clinch a playoff spot in their final weekend of play. In a play-off series played as a doubleheader the Hawks were on the losing end of two see-saw battles. Featuring an impressive pitching staff and OUA first team all-stars fielding at first, shortstop and third, the team showed a competitive edge which should carry over into next season with many key players returning. It was a marquee year in the pool as Laurier fielded a talented core of swimmers. The team collected 5 medals at the OUA Championships meet, with David Hughes

and Whitney Rich topping their events to capture gold. Hilary Jackson, with an OUA bronze medal to her credit, joined Hughes and Rich in representing Laurier at the national championships. The men’s rugby team saw an improvement this season, elevating their record to 6-2. An outstanding defensive unit kept early competition at bay; the team took their first loss seven games into the season in a showdown of undefeated teams. The team defeated their cross-town rivals, the Waterloo Warriors 17-8 for the first time in 17 years. The playoff road was cut short as a result of an opening round loss to Queen’s in the teams’ first match-up of the season. It was a disappointing season for the women’s rugby team as they competed in the higher level Sheils Division for the first time in the program’s history. Facing the province’s elite programs proved challenging for the Golden Hawks as they forged out an 0-5 season. Despite the losses, the team was able to point to many positives in work ethic and fundamentals, as well as celebrating Lindsay Wood’s accomplishments at scrum half as she was named an OUA All-Star. The women’s soccer team began their season with six new starters in the lineup. The fresh faces helped the veteran scorers to jumpstart the campaign with an undefeated streak over their opening four matches. The team’s final record of 5-5-4 earned the squad a first-round match-up with Western at the OUA playoffs. Despite scoring the game’s opening goal and controlling much of the play, the turn-around season ended with a 2-1 overtime loss. Coach Barry McLean was named as the OUA Coach of Year for the first time in his career in recognition of the team’s vast improvement. The men’s soccer season came down to a penalty shot showdown after a scoreless defensive battle with Windsor during the first-round playoff game. The Laurier shooters who had fought to keep the game knotted while down two men managed to convert only one penalty shot, ending the season for the youth-fueled team. Going 5-5-4 on the season, the coaching staff anticipates a more consistent team next year, taking advantage of the experiences gained in 2006. Laurier’s tennis team began their season welcoming new head coach Rob Hazel. The change was quickly reflected in the team’s play, as the Hawks saw much improvement and achieved their first tournament win in three years, beating Waterloo 5-2. The men’s volleyball season, which would end as the winningest season in past decade of the program’s history, began appropriately with a victory. With a winning outlook and OUA all star Jean Paul Wikerd leading the charge, the team recorded 8 wins and 12 losses over the course of the season, narrowly missing out on a playoff berth. Posting a 10-9 record, the women’s volleyball team had an up and down season which seemed resistant to winning or losing streaks. What the even record fails to show is the fierce competition the team provided to the league’s top teams, forcing five sets in a loss against McMaster and twice against Western. The Hawks appeared in the opening round of the playoffs for the seventh straight year but were ousted by the Mustangs. Having graduated many of their starting players from last season, the men’s basketball team experienced some initial growing pains, going 3-5 in the first half of the season. Surging back after the exam break, the team showcased electrifying athletes up and down the roster. After securing a playoff spot for the sixth year in a row, the team bowed out of the postseason in the first round. Next year’s squad will feature leading scorer Matt Walker and CIS leader in blocks Andrew Pennycook reuniting with the majority of this year’s team on the hunt for success. The women’s basketball team found themselves in the bottom half of their division this year, battling for much of the season to put together consistent scoring pressure. Golden Hawks in the game for Athletic Scholarships Laurier Golf Classic directs 2007 proceeds to support teams

Fall 2007 marks the beginning of a new era in university athletics in Ontario. For the first time, first-year student-athletes who carry an 80% on all course work used for admission to Wilfrid Laurier will have the opportunity to receive scholarships of up to $3,500 each. This OUA rule change now enables student-athletes in all years of eligibility to compete for financial awards throughout the province, provided they meet the academic requirements (returning student-athletes must maintain a 70% in the previous year). Laurier has made a commitment to compete with its Ontario rivals to ensure that the Golden Hawks continue to recruit the best and brightest student-athletes. The organizing committee for the Laurier Golf Classic—the university’s premier golf tourna-

ment—agreed to earmark all 2007 proceeds to support the newly-created Golden Hawk Scholarship Fund. The tournament took place in May and raised more than $70,000 in net proceeds to support all 22 varsity teams. In addition, Laurier’s President, Dr. Bob Rosehart, put forward a challenge to alumni and community supporters to raise additional funds directed to specific teams. In 2007, the university will match dollar for dollar the first $100,000 of individual donor contributions toward the Golden Hawk Scholarship Fund directed to specific teams. For more information or to contribute to the Golden Hawk Scholarship Fund, please contact Kent MacLennan, Associate Director of Development, at 519-884-0710 ext. 3177 or kmaclennan@wlu.ca.

It is a chance to observe how far female sport parEmcee Beverly Thomson, 2007 winner Jillian Ritsma, keynote ticipation has come, and the bright future that lies speaker Dr. Dana Sinclair, and Alumni Founders Award winahead.” Ritsma has played for Laurier’s varsity wom- ner Kyra Kristensen-Irvine ‘70 en’s basketball team for three years.

The game saw seven different lead changes with UBC scoring the final touchdown of the game with just over continued on next page...

light at home, taking the Battle of Waterloo game by a score of 63-62 after erasing a nine point deficit with less than two minutes to play.

Message from Dr. Bob Rosehart Continued This past fall (2006) we opened Alumni Field and this has become an important part of our campus fitness and recreation facilities. Currently we are in the process of a $5M rebuild of University Stadium. This project including new artificial turf is scheduled for completion in September 2007. The spirit of the Hawk logo stands proud and tall and 2007/2008 promises to be an exciting season. We look forward to your participation. This is my 10th and final year as President of Wilfrid Laurier University and I am very thankful for the support shown to the Golden Hawk Athletics over the years.
