My term of office as President began in September 2007 but for a month before that I was livDr, Max Blouw ing adjacent to the stadium at Lucinda House while waiting to take possession of my own home. That month was a revelation. First, the stadium was being refurbished with construction starting early in the morning and continuing late into the evening. Second, the artificial turf was being installed. I had not realized that the material for the turf was recycled automobile tires, but the smell of all that rubber in the hot sun left no doubt. It was a fascinating pleasure to watch, day by day, as the field was completed. As the season progressed and as I became more familiar with the university and its incredible spirit I also came to appreciate the special place that athletics holds in the hearts of students, players, staff, faculty, alumni and the community. Homecoming weekend brought home to me forcefully the distinctiveness of the Laurier experience. I met people who had travelled from Western Canada, the southern States, and from Europe to be at Homecoming. Our alumni and other supporters continue to be most generous. Their contributions enable a strong and dynamic athletic experience for our talented and committed players. A special thanks

The Best Season Yet: Seven Banners in 07-08
The OUA and CIS gold medals were captured by both Laurier’s women’s and men’s curling teams
The success of the 2007-2008 Golden Hawks proved once again that Wilfrid Laurier University continues to be an elite contender on the university athletics stage. The Golden Hawks earned three national championships and four provincial championships, while also producing 37 provincial all-stars and seven national all-Canadians. Here is a look back at the 2007-2008 season with a team-byteam year in review. Laurier’s curling program saw its best year to date. The men’s team had a historical season, capturing the first national title in CIS history. The team, loaded with first-year players, was led by two veteran members including fifth-year player Bill Francis. They dominated the regular season, posting an undefeated record at east sectionals, and won three out-of-four at crossovers. At the OUA championship tournament, they qualified for the final, where they defeated Western (8-5) for the second time in the tournament. At the CIS nationals, the men’s team dominated the round robin, posting a record of 5-1 and securing the first seed. Their strong play continued into the playoffs, where they defeated Guelph (8-3), Brock (10-2), and Calgary (9-4) in the final, earning the right to represent Canada at the Winter Universiade (University Games) in Harbin, China next February. Laurier’s success in curling continued on, as the women’s curling team had a magical season, also capturing the team’s first national title in history. The group of experienced curlers were referred to by their coach as the “comeback kids.” The team had a strong regular season, finishing off with a 5-2 record at both the east sectionals and crossovers bonspiel. At the OUA championship, they had a

1-2 record within the round robin, and were forced to play a tiebreaker in order to qualify for the playoffs. With all games being a mustwin in order to advance, the team rallied back and won three straight games to claim the provincial title. The Golden Hawks would find themselves in a similar situation at the CIS national championship, as they dropped the first three games of the round robin. This forced the team to win all of its games in order to have an outside chance of qualifying for the playoffs. The ladies rallied together and played their hearts out, winning seven straight games to claim the national title. They will also be joining the men’s curling team in representing Canada in China next winter.

The women’s hockey team lived up to its pre-season predictions, dominating the regular season competition with a 23-2-2 record, ranking the team third nationally. With the supporting cast of five OUA all-stars, as well as OUA Player of the Year, Lauren Barch, the Golden Hawks defeated both Queen’s (2-0) and Toronto (2-0) in a best-of-three series to capture their fifth straight OUA champion-

2008 Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Inductees
Five athletes, a builder and two teams will be inducted into the Athletics and Recreation Hall of Fame on Friday, September 19th as part of the festivities of Homecoming Weekend 2008. This year’s inductees include former varsity athletes Niki Budalic (soccer), Jacqueline Grahek (hockey), Tara Ross (cross-country & swimming), Rohan Thompson (football) and Jim Zwolak (golf) as well as Randy McGlynn in the builder category and both the 1987 men’s and 1993 women’s soccer teams. “These individuals achieved excellence, whether it was through academics, athletics, or by contributing to others,” said Peter Baxter, Wilfrid Laurier’s Director of Athletics and Recreation. “As inductees to the Hall of Fame, they are now part of an elite group known as Golden Hawk history makers.” Hosting the event at the Senate and Board Chamber on the campus of Wilfrid Laurier will be CTV Southwestern Ontario sports anchor Randy Steinman. Here’s a look at the accomplishments made by these individuals and the teams: Entering Laurier’s Master of Business Administration program from James Madison, an NCAA division one school, Niki Budalic competed two seasons with the purple and gold, earning OUA first team all-star status both years. Budalic Niki Budalic was a key member of the 2001 national championship team, defending the team’s championship. Armed with a powerful shot and creativity; he was Laurier’s top goal scorer during the championship run (five goals post season) and played an integral role as part of the team’s attack all season long. Jacqueline Grahek’s overwhelming skill and determination made an immediate impact on the women’s hockey program upon her arrival at Laurier in 1999. A left-winger with a knack for both the offensive and defensive sides of the puck, Jacqueline Grahek she continues to sit fifth in the team’s record books for points in a career (40 goals, 45 assists) and goals in a career (40). Grahek was a crucial member of the 2001-02 team that went undefeated in the regular season (19-0-1) for the first time in its short

history, en-route to an OUA Championship. Her efforts did not go unrecognized, earning OUA second team all-star status that year and the following season where the program finished with an OUA silver. Tara Ross left Laurier as arguably the best longdistance runner to ever wear a Golden Hawk uniform. An extremely gifted dual-sport athlete (cross country and swimming), Ross represented Canada at the U23 Triathlon World Championship in Tara Ross her final season at Laurier and finished fifth. Following her sophomore year, she was named the team’s most valuable player for three consecutive years, as well as being named an OUA first team all-star in 2001. In her second sport, her efforts earned her recognition as the team’s MVP twice. Rohan Thompson, a graduate of 2003, was a key member of the football team from 1999 to 2003. He quickly established himself by dressing as a rookie linebacker on the Golden Hawks defense and starting five games in his first Rohan Thompson season. A leader both on and off the field, Thompson had a career best 46.5 tackles in his final season with the purple and gold to give him a career total of 165.5 total tackles. Despite suffering two season-ending injuries, Rohan was named an OUA first team all-star in 2000 and 2002, as well as the team’s most valuable player in his final year, 2002. Jim Zwolak’s career at Wilfrid Laurier University was remarkable. In his first season with the Hawks, Jim was named both rookie of the year and most valuable player. His MVP streak continued as he won the team award for the next three years. Zwolak Jim Zwolak was also recognized as an OUA first team all-star in every season he played. In 2002-03 he was recognized as Wilfrid Laurier Universities top male athlete as the President’s Award recipient by leading his team to medal in every regular season tournament they played in. He was also crowned the OUA individual champion in 2002-03 with a three stroke victory in the OUA championship. Randy McGlynn is this season’s builder inductee. A former student at Laurier and member of the Golden Hawk football team, Randy understands the student-athlete experience and this has helped him contribute to the athletics department. McGlynn took the reins as the inaugural president of the Golden Hawk Club in 1999. As president, he has helped to continue the pride and tradition
involved in Laurier athletics with Golden Hawk alumni. The department of athletics and recreation has been able to offset the declining levels of traditional funding through the fundraising efforts orchestrated by both the Golden Hawk Club and Randy McGlynn the 5th Quarter Club. These fundraising efforts have helped support current Golden Hawks through providing improved facilities, better coaching and establishing several athlete support systems to allow them to fulfill both their athletic and academic goals. Throughout the years, he has made annual donations to Laurier and has included a gift to Laurier in his will. Randy says that, “In the end, you want to contribute to things that are of some significance to your life, and university athletics is very important to me.” The 1993 women’s soccer team has emerged as one of the most successful soccer teams in the history of the program. In his first year as Head Coach, Barry MacLean led the team to an undefeated regular season, culminating in an eventual OWIAA championship victory in which the team was up 4-0 before the half. Leading the way for the team were three All-Canadian players: Gigi Cignini, Sonya Ritcey and Helen Stoumbos. Notably, Stoumbos went on to play for the Women’s Canadian National Team from 1992-2000 and became the first Canadian to ever score a goal in the World Cup. The team also consisted of five current Laurier Hall of Fame members, not including the Head Coach.The team’s undefeated streak reached a high at the OWIAA Championship as they went on to win by a score of 4-0. Following the victory, the team advanced to the Canadian championships where their only loss of the year was suffered at the hands of Dalhousie (0-1). They then went on to win their remaining two games to capture the bronze medal, and finish their season with only one loss on their record. The 1987 men’s soccer team consisted of several gifted athletes and compiled an impressive record. At the helm was Laurier Hall of Fame Head Coach Barry Lyon, along with an impressive cast of players consisting of five CIAU All-Canadians as well as four current Hall of Fame members. Among these extraordinary athletes was Lyndon Hooper, who represented Canada over 60 times internationally and Peter Gilfillan who also represented Canada on the international stage. With this special cast of players, the team suffered only one loss throughout the 14-game regular season. The team then cruised to an eventual OUAA Championship with victories over Guelph (7-0), Western (1-0) and Toronto (1-0). After this success, they travelled to McGill for the National Championships and defeated the home team (2-1) to secure a birth into the CIAU Championship game. contined on page 3...

She is a three-time provincial all-star and the only Golden Hawk in history to hold five provincial titles in her five years of competition. Starting her hockey career at Laurier in a defensive position and adjusting to becoming a forward, she has collected 117 wins with the Golden Hawk program, as well as a national gold and two silvers. to at least be open to the possibility of a studentathlete career and be willing to become an involved member of their community.” Laurier launched the Outstanding Women of Laurier award in 2006 to recognize female students who combine athletic and academic achievement with an active commitment to the development of young athletes through community teaching or coaching. Meschino received $1,000 and a gold pendant for her accomplishments in front of a crowd of approximately 400 attendees of the luncheon ceremony. Twenty-three women competed for the prestigious award this year, including three who joined Meschino as finalists: Carolyn McEwen, Frances Minnema and Danielle Walker. Each of the finalists also received a gold pendant and a $500 financial award. This year’s event included an inspirational keynote address by four-time Olympic champion Catriona Le May Doan and was hosted by Laurier alumna Helen Stoumbos, the first Canadian ever to score a World Cup soccer goal. Stoumbos also received the Outstanding Women of Laurier Alumni Founders Award during the event. The 2008 proceeds will increase the event’s $100,000 endowment, enabling more than $4,000 to be awarded to female Laurier students each and every year. In addition, the event will put more than $15,000 into female varsity programs and coaching at Laurier.
Celebrating Success and the Challenges of Tomorrow
Laurier Golden Hawk Athletics and Recreation stands out as one of the premier programs in Canada. Last season, Laurier interuniversity teams earned four OUA championship banners (lacrosse, women’s hockey Peter Baxter and both men’s and women’s curling) and two national CIS titles. Our curling teams, through winning their CIS championships, will represent Canada at the 2009 World Universiade to be held in Harbin, China February 18-28. By the conclusion of the 2007-08 season, our teams had earned 50 OUA championships and 10 national championships. This record of achievement has been a result of the collective efforts behind our vision of “Invest in people, improve the product, and win!” We have gath-
ered, over the years, the best in coaching and leadership. Our event staff and sport information staff are recognized nationally for their professionalism. Our medical and athletic therapy team give the best of care to our athletes and our student body and alumni have helped us attain the best in facilities and enhanced program resources to achieve excellence. Last year our alumni, students, community and university administration rallied to assist in renovating the 50 year-old University Stadium and dedicated a renewed playing field in honour of Laurier greats David “Tuffy” Knight and Rich Newbrough. KnightNewbrough field will be known forever as the home of the Hawks. The future bodes well for the program. This year our Athletic Financial Award program will be in year two and throughout the 2008-09 academic year, over $280,000 will be given to academically qualified, athleti-
cally gifted student-athletes. Going forward, challenges within the league and economic landscape will have to be addressed. The cost of travel has impacted every program and the OUA has some decisions to make with regard to interdivision play and length of some sport seasons. Laurier has maintained our varsity sport offering, however we will have to review each program to ensure that each team has the resources to compete at a championship level. Your continued support will help us meet that challenge. I look forward to seeing you in the stands.

Hawks Receive National Recognition with Three Major Awards continued from cover page...
ship. Additionally, head coach Rick Osborne was named OUA Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive year. At the CIS tournament, the Golden Hawks defeated Ottawa (1-0) and Alberta (4-2) to secure a spot in the national championship game against McGill. However, in the final, McGill was relentless with their attack. The team outshot Laurier 45-23, eventually scoring two unanswered power-play goals to claim the gold. With the provincial champions having a young team with the majority able to return next year, they look poised to make another run at their sixth consecutive OUA championship. The women’s lacrosse team continued their OUA dominance, posting an undefeated record throughout the regular season, as well as throughout the OUA championship tournament, earning them a fifth consecutive OUA gold. The team displayed great offensive power throughout the regular season, winning matches against McMaster (17-2), McGill (17-5), Guelph (18-6), and Western (17-5). They finished off the OUA playoffs with a championship win over Queen’s (9-6). The team consisted of four OUA all-stars: Kirsten Gerrie, Brittney Boynton, Amy Fincham and Jayme Beard, as well as the OUA Rookie of the Year (Beard) and the Most Valuable Offensive and Defensive players (Gerrie and Boynton, respectively).

The men’s football team had yet another strong year, posting an overall regular season record of 7-1. With the provincial leaders in sacks, tackles, and forced fumbles, Laurier’s strong defence helped limit most of the opposing offenses faced throughout the season. As well, the strong offensive line, anchored by CIS all-Canadian and Lineman of the Year Scott Evans, helped pave the way for the second leading rusher in the province, Ryan Lynch. Also recognized this year was Anthony Maggiacomo, the stand-up OUA Defensive Player of the Year. Ranked second heading into the playoffs, the Golden Hawks faced off against a tough Guelph squad. In the semi-final match Laurier got off to a 21-point lead, but after a missed field goal was returned for a

touchdown, the momentum swung in the Gryphons’ favour and they were able to pull off the upset, winning 38-31. The men’s hockey team got off to a slow start to the season, going 2-3 in its first five games. However, the team quickly recovered to make a mid-season surge and finished off the season with a record of 16-9-3. Entering the first round of the OUA playoffs, the Golden Hawks were up against Waterloo, their cross-town rivals. The Hawks were shut out 5-0 in the first game of the bestof-three series; however following the loss they rallied around the veteran leaders on the team to defeat Waterloo in the next two games. Despite winning the first game of the series, the Golden Hawks were eliminated from the playoffs following two losses to Lakehead. Rookie player Craig Voakes was later named both the OUA and CIS Rookie of the Year. The women’s cheerleading team had its most successful season to date, as they captured the national championship. Athletics and Recreation was a department in transition this year. In November, Roly Webster announced that he would be leaving Laurier Athletics after thirteen years to fill the position of Associate Director of Programs and Services in Alumni Relations. In Athletics, he worked on multiple levels, from event management to facility development. In particular, Webster saw the successful renovations to the Athletic Complex, Alumni field and University Stadium. Ari Grossman became Laurier’s first fulltime Sport Information Coordinator after his graduation in 2003. After five seasons, Grossman has now moved on to become Manager, Communications and Business Operations. In this role, Ari will be responsible for the areas of marketing, sponsoring,
event management, communications and business operations within the department. An active volunteer in the department for many years, Mike Whitehouse became a fulltime member of the Hawks staff in February as the Coordinator, Communications and Technology. Whitehouse began his time in Athletics as a Sports Information assistant, and has also been the department’s resident photographer for many years. In his new position, he will be responsible for the Sport Information office as well as the day-to-day upkeep and design of the Laurier Athletics website. This past April, the Golden Hawks said goodbye to Gareth Cunningham who was Coordinator, Programs. In his time in the department, Cunningham made numerous differences to the recreation programs at Laurier, leading to its highest participation rates in years. Cunningham has moved on to the University of Western Ontario in the position of Manager of Campus Recreation. Filling Gareth’s shoes is Jennifer O’Neill. O’Neill worked as a student leader in recreation for over two years with the department, and was an employee for three. She is a former Group Fitness Coordinator and is a qualified instructor of both Can-Fit-Pro Fitness and Reebok Cycle. With characteristics such as her energy, enthusiasm, positive attitude and dedication, O’Neill is expected to be a positive force in her new position. Earlier this season, Dave Baxter stepped down from his position as Coordinator, Stadium Operations and Events. Since his start in the department in 2003, Baxter was able to balance academics with athletics, and dedicated much of his time to the department in positions such as lifeguard, Student Leader, Aquatic Coordinator and Hawk Desk Coordinator. Baxter recently completed his Certified Management Accountant designation, and leaves Athletics to pursue that stream. Ryan Lannan is a newcomer to his
position as Coordinator, Facilities, however is a very familiar face to Wilfrid Laurier University and its staff and students. Lannan has moved from working at Residential Services to his new position, where he manages the daily operations and needs of the Athletic Complex, Stadium and Alumni Field. Lannan has been a welcome addition to the Golden Hawk family since he began his position in May. Stu Julius, head coach of the women’s basketball team, declared 2007-2008 to be his final season with the Hawks. Since joining Laurier in 1999, Julius greatly contributed to the women’s basketball program by leading them to two appearances at nationals. To fill Julius’ shoes, Paul Falco has been named the new head coach of the women’s basketball program. Falco brings a variety of experience to the position, including having played as a varsity athlete at Laurentian. He has also been an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team since 2000. Falco brings both national and international experience to the program, and is excited to take the helm of the women’s team. New to the Golden Hawk team is Heather Ferris, who will be the new Coordinator, Sponsorship and Events beginning August 18th. Ferris is a Laurier graduate and was highly involved in the Student’s Union both as a participant and student leader. After graduation, Ferris worked within the non-profit sector in charge of event planning and sponsorship organization. In her new position, she will be responsible for game day event management for all varsity games as well as managing the department’s sponsorship portfolio. Finally, Krista Irving, who has been filling in for Kelly Lee for the last year will be moving into the Bookings and Financial Assistant role this coming fall. Rebecca Watts who was previously in this position will be continuting her education in Ottawa. We are looking forward to a great year!

At the CIS tournament, the Golden Hawks defeated Ottawa (1-0) and Alberta (4-2) to secure a spot in the national championship game against McGill. However, in the final, McGill was relentless with their attack. The team outshot Laurier 45-23, eventually scoring two unanswered power-play goals to claim the gold. With the provincial champions having a young team with the majority able to return next year, they look poised to make another run at their sixth consecutive OUA championship. The women’s lacrosse team continued their OUA dominance, posting an undefeated record throughout the regular season, as well as throughout the OUA championship tournament, earning them a fifth consecutive OUA gold. The team displayed great offensive power throughout the regular season, winning matches against McMaster (17-2), McGill (17-5), Guelph (18-6), and Western (17-5). They finished off the OUA playoffs with a championship win over Queen’s (9-6). The team consisted of four OUA all-stars: Kirsten Gerrie, Brittney Boynton, Amy Fincham and Jayme Beard, as well as the OUA Rookie of the Year (Beard) and the Most Valuable Offensive and Defensive players (Gerrie and Boynton, respectively).

The men’s football team had yet another strong year, posting an overall regular season record of 7-1. With the provincial leaders in sacks, tackles, and forced fumbles, Laurier’s strong defence helped limit most of the opposing offenses faced throughout the season. As well, the strong offensive line, anchored by CIS all-Canadian and Lineman of the Year Scott Evans, helped pave the way for the second leading rusher in the province, Ryan Lynch. Also recognized this year was Anthony Maggiacomo, the stand-up OUA Defensive Player of the Year. Ranked second heading into the playoffs, the Golden Hawks faced off against a tough Guelph squad. In the semi-final match Laurier got off to a 21-point lead, but after a missed field goal was returned for a

touchdown, the momentum swung in the Gryphons’ favour and they were able to pull off the upset, winning 38-31. The men’s hockey team got off to a slow start to the season, going 2-3 in its first five games. However, the team quickly recovered to make a mid-season surge and finished off the season with a record of 16-9-3. Entering the first round of the OUA playoffs, the Golden Hawks were up against Waterloo, their cross-town rivals. The Hawks were shut out 5-0 in the first game of the bestof-three series; however following the loss they rallied around the veteran leaders on the team to defeat Waterloo in the next two games. She is a three-time provincial all-star and the only Golden Hawk in history to hold five provincial titles in her five years of competition. Starting her hockey career at Laurier in a defensive position and adjusting to becoming a forward, she has collected 117 wins with the Golden Hawk program, as well as a national gold and two silvers. to at least be open to the possibility of a studentathlete career and be willing to become an involved member of their community.” Laurier launched the Outstanding Women of Laurier award in 2006 to recognize female students who combine athletic and academic achievement with an active commitment to the development of young athletes through community teaching or coaching. Meschino received $1,000 and a gold pendant for her accomplishments in front of a crowd of approximately 400 attendees of the luncheon ceremony. Twenty-three women competed for the prestigious award this year, including three who joined Meschino as finalists: Carolyn McEwen, Frances Minnema and Danielle Walker. Each of the finalists also received a gold pendant and a $500 financial award. This year’s event included an inspirational keynote address by four-time Olympic champion Catriona Le May Doan and was hosted by Laurier alumna Helen Stoumbos, the first Canadian ever to score a World Cup soccer goal. Stoumbos also received the Outstanding Women of Laurier Alumni Founders Award during the event. The 2008 proceeds will increase the event’s $100,000 endowment, enabling more than $4,000 to be awarded to female Laurier students each and every year. In addition, the event will put more than $15,000 into female varsity programs and coaching at Laurier.
Celebrating Success and the Challenges of Tomorrow
Laurier Golden Hawk Athletics and Recreation stands out as one of the premier programs in Canada. Last season, Laurier interuniversity teams earned four OUA championship banners (lacrosse, women’s hockey Peter Baxter and both men’s and women’s curling) and two national CIS titles. Our curling teams, through winning their CIS championships, will represent Canada at the 2009 World Universiade to be held in Harbin, China February 18-28. By the conclusion of the 2007-08 season, our teams had earned 50 OUA championships and 10 national championships. This record of achievement has been a result of the collective efforts behind our vision of “Invest in people, improve the product, and win!” We have gath-
ered, over the years, the best in coaching and leadership. Our event staff and sport information staff are recognized nationally for their professionalism. Our medical and athletic therapy team give the best of care to our athletes and our student body and alumni have helped us attain the best in facilities and enhanced program resources to achieve excellence. Last year our alumni, students, community and university administration rallied to assist in renovating the 50 year-old University Stadium and dedicated a renewed playing field in honour of Laurier greats David “Tuffy” Knight and Rich Newbrough. KnightNewbrough field will be known forever as the home of the Hawks. The future bodes well for the program. This year our Athletic Financial Award program will be in year two and throughout the 2008-09 academic year, over $280,000 will be given to academically qualified, athleti-
cally gifted student-athletes. Going forward, challenges within the league and economic landscape will have to be addressed. The cost of travel has impacted every program and the OUA has some decisions to make with regard to interdivision play and length of some sport seasons. Laurier has maintained our varsity sport offering, however we will have to review each program to ensure that each team has the resources to compete at a championship level. 2008 Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Inductees
Five athletes, a builder and two teams will be inducted into the Athletics and Recreation Hall of Fame on Friday, September 19th as part of the festivities of Homecoming Weekend 2008. This year’s inductees include former varsity athletes Niki Budalic (soccer), Jacqueline Grahek (hockey), Tara Ross (cross-country & swimming), Rohan Thompson (football) and Jim Zwolak (golf) as well as Randy McGlynn in the builder category and both the 1987 men’s and 1993 women’s soccer teams. “These individuals achieved excellence, whether it was through academics, athletics, or by contributing to others,” said Peter Baxter, Wilfrid Laurier’s Director of Athletics and Recreation. “As inductees to the Hall of Fame, they are now part of an elite group known as Golden Hawk history makers.” Hosting the event at the Senate and Board Chamber on the campus of Wilfrid Laurier will be CTV Southwestern Ontario sports anchor Randy Steinman. Here’s a look at the accomplishments made by these individuals and the teams: Entering Laurier’s Master of Business Administration program from James Madison, an NCAA division one school, Niki Budalic competed two seasons with the purple and gold, earning OUA first team all-star status both years. Budalic Niki Budalic was a key member of the 2001 national championship team, defending the team’s championship. Armed with a powerful shot and creativity; he was Laurier’s top goal scorer during the championship run (five goals post season) and played an integral role as part of the team’s attack all season long. Jacqueline Grahek’s overwhelming skill and determination made an immediate impact on the women’s hockey program upon her arrival at Laurier in 1999. A left-winger with a knack for both the offensive and defensive sides of the puck, Jacqueline Grahek she continues to sit fifth in the team’s record books for points in a career (40 goals, 45 assists) and goals in a career (40). Grahek was a crucial member of the 2001-02 team that went undefeated in the regular season (19-0-1) for the first time in its short

history, en-route to an OUA Championship. Her efforts did not go unrecognized, earning OUA second team all-star status that year and the following season where the program finished with an OUA silver. Tara Ross left Laurier as arguably the best longdistance runner to ever wear a Golden Hawk uniform. An extremely gifted dual-sport athlete (cross country and swimming), Ross represented Canada at the U23 Triathlon World Championship in Tara Ross her final season at Laurier and finished fifth. Following her sophomore year, she was named the team’s most valuable player for three consecutive years, as well as being named an OUA first team all-star in 2001. In her second sport, her efforts earned her recognition as the team’s MVP twice. Rohan Thompson, a graduate of 2003, was a key member of the football team from 1999 to 2003. He quickly established himself by dressing as a rookie linebacker on the Golden Hawks defense and starting five games in his first Rohan Thompson season. A leader both on and off the field, Thompson had a career best 46.5 tackles in his final season with the purple and gold to give him a career total of 165.5 total tackles. Despite suffering two season-ending injuries, Rohan was named an OUA first team all-star in 2000 and 2002, as well as the team’s most valuable player in his final year, 2002. Jim Zwolak’s career at Wilfrid Laurier University was remarkable. In his first season with the Hawks, Jim was named both rookie of the year and most valuable player. His MVP streak continued as he won the team award for the next three years. Zwolak Jim Zwolak was also recognized as an OUA first team all-star in every season he played. In 2002-03 he was recognized as Wilfrid Laurier Universities top male athlete as the President’s Award recipient by leading his team to medal in every regular season tournament they played in. He was also crowned the OUA individual champion in 2002-03 with a three stroke victory in the OUA championship. Randy McGlynn is this season’s builder inductee. A former student at Laurier and member of the Golden Hawk football team, Randy understands the student-athlete experience and this has helped him contribute to the athletics department. McGlynn took the reins as the inaugural president of the Golden Hawk Club in 1999. As president, he has helped to continue the pride and tradition
involved in Laurier athletics with Golden Hawk alumni. The department of athletics and recreation has been able to offset the declining levels of traditional funding through the fundraising efforts orchestrated by both the Golden Hawk Club and Randy McGlynn the 5th Quarter Club. These fundraising efforts have helped support current Golden Hawks through providing improved facilities, better coaching and establishing several athlete support systems to allow them to fulfill both their athletic and academic goals. Throughout the years, he has made annual donations to Laurier and has included a gift to Laurier in his will. Randy says that, “In the end, you want to contribute to things that are of some significance to your life, and university athletics is very important to me.” The 1993 women’s soccer team has emerged as one of the most successful soccer teams in the history of the program. In his first year as Head Coach, Barry MacLean led the team to an undefeated regular season, culminating in an eventual OWIAA championship victory in which the team was up 4-0 before the half. Leading the way for the team were three All-Canadian players: Gigi Cignini, Sonya Ritcey and Helen Stoumbos. Notably, Stoumbos went on to play for the Women’s Canadian National Team from 1992-2000 and became the first Canadian to ever score a goal in the World Cup. The team also consisted of five current Laurier Hall of Fame members, not including the Head Coach.The team’s undefeated streak reached a high at the OWIAA Championship as they went on to win by a score of 4-0. Following the victory, the team advanced to the Canadian championships where their only loss of the year was suffered at the hands of Dalhousie (0-1). They then went on to win their remaining two games to capture the bronze medal, and finish their season with only one loss on their record. The 1987 men’s soccer team consisted of several gifted athletes and compiled an impressive record. At the helm was Laurier Hall of Fame Head Coach Barry Lyon, along with an impressive cast of players consisting of five CIAU All-Canadians as well as four current Hall of Fame members. Among these extraordinary athletes was Lyndon Hooper, who represented Canada over 60 times internationally and Peter Gilfillan who also represented Canada on the international stage. With this special cast of players, the team suffered only one loss throughout the 14-game regular season. The team then cruised to an eventual OUAA Championship with victories over Guelph (7-0), Western (1-0) and Toronto (1-0). After this success, they travelled to McGill for the National Championships and defeated the home team (2-1) to secure a birth into the CIAU Championship game. contined on page 3...

My term of office as President began in September 2007 but for a month before that I was livDr, Max Blouw ing adjacent to the stadium at Lucinda House while waiting to take possession of my own home. That month was a revelation. First, the stadium was being refurbished with construction starting early in the morning and continuing late into the evening. Second, the artificial turf was being installed. I had not realized that the material for the turf was recycled automobile tires, but the smell of all that rubber in the hot sun left no doubt. It was a fascinating pleasure to watch, day by day, as the field was completed. As the season progressed and as I became more familiar with the university and its incredible spirit I also came to appreciate the special place that athletics holds in the hearts of students, players, staff, faculty, alumni and the community. Homecoming weekend brought home to me forcefully the distinctiveness of the Laurier experience. I met people who had travelled from Western Canada, the southern States, and from Europe to be at Homecoming. Our alumni and other supporters continue to be most generous. Their contributions enable a strong and dynamic athletic experience for our talented and committed players. A special thanks

The Best Season Yet: Seven Banners in 07-08
The OUA and CIS gold medals were captured by both Laurier’s women’s and men’s curling teams
The success of the 2007-2008 Golden Hawks proved once again that Wilfrid Laurier University continues to be an elite contender on the university athletics stage. The Golden Hawks earned three national championships and four provincial championships, while also producing 37 provincial all-stars and seven national all-Canadians. Here is a look back at the 2007-2008 season with a team-byteam year in review. Laurier’s curling program saw its best year to date. The men’s team had a historical season, capturing the first national title in CIS history. The team, loaded with first-year players, was led by two veteran members including fifth-year player Bill Francis. They dominated the regular season, posting an undefeated record at east sectionals, and won three out-of-four at crossovers. At the OUA championship tournament, they qualified for the final, where they defeated Western (8-5) for the second time in the tournament. At the CIS nationals, the men’s team dominated the round robin, posting a record of 5-1 and securing the first seed. Their strong play continued into the playoffs, where they defeated Guelph (8-3), Brock (10-2), and Calgary (9-4) in the final, earning the right to represent Canada at the Winter Universiade (University Games) in Harbin, China next February. Laurier’s success in curling continued on, as the women’s curling team had a magical season, also capturing the team’s first national title in history. The group of experienced curlers were referred to by their coach as the “comeback kids.” The team had a strong regular season, finishing off with a 5-2 record at both the east sectionals and crossovers bonspiel. At the OUA championship, they had a

1-2 record within the round robin, and were forced to play a tiebreaker in order to qualify for the playoffs. With all games being a mustwin in order to advance, the team rallied back and won three straight games to claim the provincial title. The Golden Hawks would find themselves in a similar situation at the CIS national championship, as they dropped the first three games of the round robin. This forced the team to win all of its games in order to have an outside chance of qualifying for the playoffs. The ladies rallied together and played their hearts out, winning seven straight games to claim the national title. They will also be joining the men’s curling team in representing Canada in China next winter.

The women’s hockey team lived up to its pre-season predictions, dominating the regular season competition with a 23-2-2 record, ranking the team third nationally. With the supporting cast of five OUA all-stars, as well as OUA Player of the Year, Lauren Barch, the Golden Hawks defeated both Queen’s (2-0) and Toronto (2-0) in a best-of-three series to capture their fifth straight OUA champion-
