NV Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor Requirements
Licensed/Certified Counselors Nevada Administrative Code 641C (NAC 641C.300) requires that all licensed or certified alcohol and drug counselors earn 40 hours of continuing education hours during a two-year period of licensure or certification, of which three hours must pertain to ethics and three hours must pertain to confidentiality and HIPAA.
Clinical Supervisors Licensed counselors who supervise certified interns must attend at least ten hours of continuing education in counseling supervision, ethics, and Nevada law during the two-year certification period. These hours may be included in the required 40 hours of continuing education.
Interns Registered counselor interns are required to earn 15 hours of training within the first six months of their internship employment, 10 hours during the second six months, and 20 hours in each subsequent year. During the first three months, six hours of continuing educations credits must pertain to ethics and six hours must pertain to confidentiality and HIPAA.
Social Work CEUs Pursuant to NAC 641B.189(2) revised February 11, 2009 and the Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers, a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) may take up to 15 hours of continuing education credits and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) may take up to 18 hours of continuing education credits via distance learning/remote study courses, home study and/or self directed learning programs during a two-year period.
Record Keeping Participants in need of contact hours for alcohol and drug counseling licensure, certification, or internship, must have proof of attendance (Certificate of Completion) for possible audit by the Nevada Board of Examiners for Alcohol, Drug and Gambling Counselor’s office.

Prevention Specialist Credentialing The state of Nevada does not have an established International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) Member Board which recognizes the Prevention Specialist Certification. Those interested in receiving this certification are advised to visit a neighboring state that has an approved IC&RC Member Board to apply for certification in that state. For example, the California Certification Board of Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors recognizes the Prevention Specialist Certification and offers the examination to receive such designation. In order to become a Prevention Specialist, the IC&RC has established the following minimum standards, however each member board may have additional requirements that must be met in order to qualify for the Prevention Specialist Certification:
Experience
2000 hours of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention work experience.
Education
100 hours of prevention specific education. Fifty hours of this education must be ATOD specific. Six hours must be specific to prevention ethics.
Supervision
120 hours specific to the domains with a minimum of ten hours in each domain.
Examination
Applicants must pass the IC&RC International Written Prevention Specialist Examination.
Code of Ethics
Applicants must sign a prevention specific code of ethics statement or affirmation statement.
Recertification
40 hours of continuing education earned every two years. If the above standards are met, along with the individual IC&RC member board requirements, one must apply to take the Prevention Specialist examination. The Prevention Specialist examination will include questions pertaining to the following domains, which were identified as a Prevention Specialist’s areas of expertise: 1. Planning & Evaluation 2. Education & Skill Development 3. Community Organization 4. Public Policy & Environmental Change 5. February Implementing and Utilizing Peer Recovery Specialists in Your Agency Feb. 23 Reno only Time: 8:30am - 4:15pm
This workshop will provide behavioral healthcare and treatment providers the history and background of the recovery movement in the United States and introduce the concept of Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC). The principles and elements of ROSC will be highlighted along with current research and definitions for recovery and peer-based recovery services. In addition, this workshop will assist behavioral healthcare and treatment providers in applying the principles and elements of ROSC into their agencies and/or organizations. Specifically, this workshop will include a review of the science of recovery and strategies for executive directors and clinical supervisors as they shift their services from an acute care model to recovery-focused service delivery. Finally, topics specific to working as a Peer Recovery Specialist will be reviewed, including: 1. roles and boundaries; 2. client advocacy; and 3. ethical and scope of practice issues. This class is specifically designed for therapists, clinical case managers, and other professionals, who work with clients who are externally motivated by the courts, child welfare, their parents or partner, or other sources. It provides a solid review of the fundamentals of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy while placing special emphasis on how to engage challenging clients and how to find a common goal. This course is specifically designed to ensure professionals can leave the classroom and effectively implement these skills with challenging clients. Explore self-concept and identity, including the “calculating self” and the “central self,” as they relate to shifting our focus from survival to opportunity. This course reviews the development of Contingency Management (CM) treatments for substance use disorders. It describes some of the initial treatment studies of CM using vouchers as incentives, along with lower cost alternatives. The recently completed National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network study of this CM approach will also be detailed. The video will depict use of CM techniques in practice. The second half of the course reviews aspects of behavioral therapy necessary to develop an effective CM approach for practice. Viewers will be provided the opportunity to develop their own CM program for use with unique patients or within special populations. Instructor Nancy Petry, Ph.D. CEHs 5 MET-CBT is an engaging therapy approach combining Motivational Enhancement Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Therapists and counselors looking for an effective brief intervention for treating adolescents with substance use disorders are likely to find this training beneficial. The workshop begins with a fairly brief overview of MET and CBT, and how they are implemented through this manualguided treatment. Instructor Susan Sampl, Ph.D. CEHs 6 This course is designed to inform participants about the basic principles of caring for persons who suffer from withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs. The course will review the state of Nevada’s laws and regulatory guidelines for operating and working in a Level 111.2 D (Social Model Detox Program) and a Level 111.7 D (Modified Medical Detox Program), and will include a section on commonly used medications for detox along with a skills-based section on the proper way to measure, record, and report vital signs. A significant portion of the course will be dedicated to teaching participants about the biopsychosocial aspects of withdrawal from AOD and will also address engagement and retention strategies at this level of care. Managed care companies, treatment providers, and program evaluators use patient placement criteria to ensure that clients are placed in the appropriate level of care. This training examines the patient placement criteria for clients with substance use disorders adopted by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Admission, continued stay, and discharge criteria for adults and adolescents will be reviewed. Case studies will be utilized to help participants apply the principles of placement criteria. This workshop is appropriate for addiction counselors, especially individuals preparing for the oral licensure or certification exam. Social workers, marriage and family therapists, and probation/ parole officers may wish to take this workshop, as they frequently encounter patient placement criteria issues when seeking placement for their clients. Methadone & Other Pharmacological Approaches to Substance Abuse Treatment VHS ONLY
This workshop addresses two emerging topics critical to understanding addictions. The first part of the workshop is spent examining the underlying neurobiology of acute and chronic drug effects, such as changes on thinking, impulse control and judgment. The second half of the workshop explores the chronic disease model, and long-term addiction treatment strategies for best outcomes. Instructor Melissa Piasecki, M.D. CEHs 6 Alcohol and other drug treatment providers face many difficult and complex ethical issues. Issues involving dual relationships, scope of practice, and professional conduct frequently arise. These and other ethical issues will be compared to the ethical standards of other mental health professional groups within this course. Research results of the success of this form of treatment, as well as the controversial aspects of methadone maintenance will be discussed. Once you successfully sign-up and pay the $25.00* registration fee, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with the link to the online quiz. The quiz will be displayed as a PDF document; to ensure that you are able to open and fill-out the quiz, please download the most current version of Adobe Reader. The quiz will include a combination of ten multiple choice, true/false, and fillin-the-blank questions to assess your comprehension of the article. Your quiz will be graded and a score of 70% or above will earn you a certificate of completion for one certified continuing education hour. Questions that are not answered will be considered incorrect. This is an open-book assessment and you may refer back to the article as you please. Please allow 7-10 business days for processing, grading your quiz, and/ or receiving your certificate. Your certificate will be sent electronically to the e-mail address provided during registration. It is your responsibility to print off this certificate of completion, it is not the responsibility of CASAT to provide a physical copy of your certificate of completion should you pass the continuing education course. Should you be unsuccessful in passing the quiz, you will be eligible to retake the quiz in order to achieve the 70% or better passing rate. Scholarships Scholarships
A limited number of full or partial fee-only scholarships are available for each class. Scholarships are primarily for persons with extremely limited resources. Scholarship applications must be made 30 days in advance of the workshop to be considered. Applicants can only receive a scholarship for one class per catalog.
