NV Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor Requirements Licensed/Certified Counselors
Nevada Administrative Code 641C (NAC 641C.300) requires that all licensed or certified alcohol and drug counselors earn 40 hours of continuing education hours during a two-year period of licensure or certification, of which three hours must pertain to ethics and three hours must pertain to confidentiality and HIPAA.
Clinical Supervisors
Licensed counselors who supervise certified interns must attend at least ten hours of continuing education in counseling supervision, ethics, and Nevada law during the two-year certification period. These hours may be included in the required 40 hours of continuing education.
Interns
Registered counselor interns are required to earn 15 hours of training within the first six months of their internship employment, 10 hours during the second six months, and 20 hours in each subsequent year. During the first three months, six hours of continuing educations credits must pertain to ethics and six hours must pertain to confidentiality and HIPAA.
Social Work CEHs
Pursuant to NAC 641B.189(2) revised February 11, 2009 and the Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers, a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) may take up to 15 hours of continuing education credits and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) may take up to 18 hours of continuing education credits via distance learning/remote study courses, home study and/or self directed learning programs during a two-year period.
Record Keeping
Participants in need of contact hours for alcohol and drug counseling licensure, certification, or internship, must have proof of attendance (Certificate of Completion) for possible audit by the Nevada Board of Examiners for Alcohol, Drug and Gambling Counselor’s office.

NV Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor Requirements
Prevention Specialist Credentialing The state of Nevada does not have an established International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) Member Board which recognizes the Prevention Specialist Certification. Those interested in receiving this certification are advised to visit a neighboring state that has an approved IC&RC Member Board to apply for certification in that state. For example, the California Certification Board of Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors recognizes the Prevention Specialist Certification and offers the examination to receive such designation. In order to become a Prevention Specialist, the IC&RC has established the following minimum standards, however each member board may have additional requirements that must be met in order to qualify for thePrevention Specialist Certification:
Experience
2000 hours of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention work experience.
Education
100 hours of prevention specific education. Fifty hours of this education must be ATOD specific. Six hours must be specific to prevention ethics.
Supervision
120 hours specific to the domains with a minimum of ten hours in each domain.
Examination
Applicants must pass the IC&RC International Written Prevention Specialist Examination.
Code of Ethics
Applicants must sign a prevention specific code of ethics statement or affirmation statement.
Recertification
40 hours of continuing education earned every two years. If the above standards are met, along with the individual IC&RC member board requirements, one must apply to take the Prevention Specialist examination. The Prevention Specialist examination will include questions pertaining to the following domains, which were identified as a Prevention Specialist’s areas of expertise:

Suicide is a leading cause of death among people who abuse alcohol and drugs (Wilcox, Conner, & Caine, 2004). This training will consider: basic strategies in addressing suicidal thoughts and behaviors, techniques for assessing suicidal ideation and considerations for best practices in responding to these unique situations. Treatment Strategies for Prescription Opioid Dependence is a package of tools and training resources for substance use disorders treatment providers. The Blending Package describes how buprenorphine works and presents the results of a National Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network (CTN) study that compared brief and extended buprenorphine treatments. The results of the study have implications for the treatment of adults dependent on prescription opioids. The purpose of this workshop is to provide clinicians from a variety of work and educational backgrounds with a detailed overview of synthetic drugs, including substances known on the street as K2, Spice, and Bath Salts. Lundy Bancroft explains the profile and tactics of abusive men, with their major implications for children in the home. CASAT Webinars In this webinar we will discuss the importance of, theoretical basis for, and current models of a collegiate sober living community. Many college students view substance use as a rite of passage into adulthood; yet, it can actually lead Feb. 19, 2013 them into experiencing isolation and despair. Students whose substance abuse escalates into addiction typically Time Noon-1:30pm PST drop out of college and struggle with finding success. To address the needs of these young people who reenter college, universities across the country have recently discovered the value of collegiate recovery communities (CRC) helping students navigate the substance use minefield of college. CRCs find that recovering students thrive with peer and university support, ongoing skills development, and a sober environment filled with fun activities. Student success is increased as students find safety, emotional security, competence, purpose, belonging, and a sense of identity and competence through their CRC engagement. Methamphetamine Prevention: An Inquiry – 10 CEHs
This material is designed specifically for substance abuse prevention specialists who are interested in exploring resources that can inform their work in preventing methamphetamine use. This material will guide students in a close examination of current knowledge and practices related to methamphetamine prevention.
Ethical decision Making in Substance Abuse Prevention (Ethics) – 8 CEHs
This is introductory material to the Ethical Decision-making Model and the Code of Ethical Conduct for Prevention Professionals designed for participants who are motivated to learn and apply an ethical decision making model and code of ethical conduct to their work in the substance abuse prevention and/or related fields.
Cultural Communities – 6 CEHS, option to continue for 20 CEHs
To increase the level of knowledge and obtain new tools to work effectively with diverse cultural communities and to create and/or implement a plan to begin work with another culture.
Creative Leadership – 8 CEHs
In this course, participants will explore how we learn about and perceive our world, including the practices of “survival-thinking“ and “scarcity-thinking”. Explore self-concept and identity, including the “calculating self” and the “central self,” as they relate to shifting our focus from survival to opportunity. DVD Rentals Contingency Management DVD

This course reviews the development of Contingency Management (CM) treatments for substance use disorders. It describes some of the initial treatment studies of CM using vouchers as incentives, along with lower cost alternatives. The recently completed National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network study of this CM approach will also be detailed. The video will depict use of CM techniques in practice. The second half of the course reviews aspects of behavioral therapy necessary to develop an effective CM approach for practice. Viewers will be provided the opportunity to develop their own CM program for use with unique patients or within special populations.

The MET-CBT Approach for Adolescents with Substance Use Disorders DVD

This course is designed to inform participants about the basic principles of caring for persons who suffer from withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs. The course will review the state of Nevada’s laws and regulatory guidelines for operating and working in a Level 111.2 D (Social Model Detox Program) and a Level 111.7 D (Modified Medical Detox Program), and will include a section on commonly used medications for detox along with a skills-based section on the proper way to measure, record, and report vital signs. A significant portion of the course will be dedicated to teaching participants about the biopsychosocial aspects of withdrawal from AOD and will also address engagement and retention strategies at this level of care.

HIPAA regulations and their relationship to the Federal Confidentiality Rules and Regulations 42 CFR-Part II will be discussed. Specifically, the workshop will cover the following topics: proper consent, subpoenas, qualified service organization agreements, exceptions to the confidentiality rules, child and elder abuse reports, and much more. Scholarships Scholarships
A limited number of full or partial fee-only scholarships are available for each class. Scholarships are primarily for persons with extremely limited resources. Scholarship applications must be made 30 days in advance of the workshop to be considered. Applicants can only receive a scholarship for one class per catalog.
