NV Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor Requirements Licensed/Certified Counselors
Nevada Administrative Code 641C (NAC 641C.300) requires that all licensed or certified alcohol and drug counselors earn 40 hours of continuing education hours during a twoyear period of licensure or certification, of which three hours must pertain to ethics and three hours must pertain to confidentiality and HIPAA.
Clinical Supervisors
Licensed counselors who supervise certified interns must attend at least ten hours of continuing education in counseling supervision, ethics, and Nevada law during the two-year certification period. These hours may be included in the required 40 hours of continuing education.
Interns
Registered counselor interns are required to earn 15 hours of training within the first six months of their internship employment, 10 hours during the second six months, and 20 hours in each subsequent year. During the first three months, six hours of continuing educations credits must pertain to ethics and six hours must pertain to confidentiality and HIPAA.
Social Work CEHs
Pursuant to NAC 641B.189(2) revised February 11, 2009 and the Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers, a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) may take up to 15 hours of continuing education credits and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) may take up to 18 hours of continuing education credits via distance learning/remote study courses, home study and/or self directed learning programs during a two-year period.
Record Keeping
Participants in need of contact hours for alcohol and drug counseling licensure, certification, or internship, must have proof of attendance (Certificate of Completion) for possible audit by the Nevada Board of Examiners for Alcohol, Drug and Gambling Counselor’s office.

Resource Information
Prevention Specialist Credentialing The state of Nevada does not have an established International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) Member Board which recognizes the Prevention Specialist Certification. Those interested in receiving this certification are advised to visit a neighboring state that has an approved IC&RC Member Board to apply for certification in that state. For example, the California Certification Board of Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors recognizes the Prevention Specialist Certification and offers the examination to receive such designation. In order to become a Prevention Specialist, the IC&RC has established the following minimum standards, however each member board may have additional requirements that must be met in order to qualify for thePrevention Specialist Certification:
Experience
2000 hours of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention work experience.
Education
100 hours of prevention specific education. Fifty hours of this education must be ATOD specific. Six hours must be specific to prevention ethics.
Supervision
120 hours specific to the domains with a minimum of ten hours in each domain.
Examination
Applicants must pass the IC&RC International Written Prevention Specialist Examination.
Code of Ethics
Applicants must sign a prevention specific code of ethics statement or affirmation statement.
Recertification
40 hours of continuing education earned every two years. If the above standards are met, along with the individual IC&RC member board requirements, one must apply to take the Prevention Specialist examination. The Prevention Specialist examination will include questions pertaining to the following domains, which were identified as a Prevention Specialist’s areas of expertise:

Workshops January Integrating Peer Nevada is planning to build a sustainable, peer Support Services driven, system of care to increase recovery and whole in your Agency health outcomes through statewide public/private
peer partnerships. With the introduction of ACA, peer providers will expand their role in the delivery Jan. 24 Reno of reimbursable services. March Many of the issues that we deal with in substance use treatment are generational. One of these issues is child abuse/neglect. In this workshop we will consider the relationship between child abuse/neglect and substance use. The objectives of the Clinical Supervision in-person training includes facilitating the development of a personal model of supervision and practicing skills to help shape the delivery of high quality, effective clinical services to those seeking assistance for substance use disorders. This course will discuss cultural concepts presented in the DSM-5. The updated edition reflects a more inclusive description of the range of psychopathology on a more global (and not limited to a Western-based) approach. The course will discuss DSM-5’s newly presented cultural principles, including “Cultural Syndrome”, as well as gender and cross-cultural issues to be considered in diagnosis. The course will also review the (evidencebased) Cultural Formation Interview (CFI), a semistructured interview composed of 16 questions to assess cultural factors using a person-centered approach. Overall, the information provided throughout DSM-5, and particularly in the cultural formulation areas discussed in this course, can help clinicians avoid misdiagnosis, obtain clinically useful information, improve clinical rapport, and assess cultural epidemiology. Addiction Severity Index (ASI) Lite is a shorter version than the complete ASI. The ASI is a semi-structured instrument that covers the following areas, medical, employment/support, drug and alcohol use, legal, family/social, and psychiatric. A trauma-informed approach to addressing elder abuse and neglect, including self-neglect. The training offers a present-focus, collaborative process focused on safe coping and reducing risk/increasing safety for elders. The Blending Package describes how buprenorphine works and presents the results of a National Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network (CTN) study that compared brief and extended buprenorphine treatments. The results of the study have implications for the treatment of adults dependent on prescription opioids.
